What's new

India vs South Africa | 3rd Test | Johannesburg | Jan 24-28, 2018 | Day 1 | Discussion Thread

Oh no my favorite rohit FTB sharma is not playing.Would have been fun!!Damn it!!

Will the pitch be like this when India bowls?

lol what do i know

but first day morning is usually considered best conditions for pacers

unless there is rain with a day washed out or sth contributing to moisture being left over and overcast conditions

If some one else would have played innings like kohli played today they would have said rubbish innings but because it's KING Kohli they all will say its great.

Rahane off the mark with a 2. Will he leave Pujara in the dust as well?

lol how is it a rubbish innings

very tough bowling conditions against the best pace attack in the world arguably

not only did he score but he also pushed the game along while his partner went to sleep.

yes he got dropped once but in such conditions chances are a given

It was a pretty good innings wasn’t great but was pretty good and if anyone else played it apart from Kohli people would have said the same..

Once? too many inside edges missed stumps by inches 2 drops , lbws and he is in form + ball wasn't even new. He looked to play rash shots when there was no need for it.

Rahane is already showing what a completely different batsman he is from Rohit. Dumb selection by India in the last 2 tests.

On a wicket that has too much swing and seam movement, inside edges are quite common.
That lbw was of Pujara. Not Kohli.
Kohli was put down by Philander and that was the only easy chance.

Pujara needs to play the whole day to score 50.

He is not dispatching the bad balls away..Reminds me of Jacob Martin during his debut test in West Indies against Walsh and Dillon

if he can bat through then he will be useful later on even at this rate cuz likes of pandya, BK can have cameos at decent clip with one end safe

I would play rahane kind of batsman even if they fail in 3 - 4 test matches in overseas.

I've been critical of him in the past but massive respect to Kohli for that innings. He played very well in tough conditions and did not take a step back even when faced against the Proteas' fearsome foursome.

He seems to have improved his game against the moving ball. Still some ways to go but it's great to see him living up to the hype.

Rahane does rohit sharma here consistent 10 runs. His confidence is pretty low. Kohli played politics by dropping him when he should have been given confidence to play from 1st test.

parthiv patel is already in?!?!

man india needs one more batsman. more depth needed

Right now it all looks like Kohli is alone in this fight

Others are looking average

Was Kohli angry at Rahane missing the ball or the umpire's decision?

Why is everyone laying into Pujara for scoring slowly, fact is had he gotten out early, we would have now been 140-150 for 7-8, his being there allowed Kohli to get his 50, he shielded Kohli from philander early on and given how we have batted he is the only batsman other than Kohli who seems to not have forgotten how to bat.

I dont think pitch will get easier in coming days. If India gets 250+, they are ahead IMO and a 300+ means they could very well win this one.

Rahane has proved he would have done nothing in the first two tests

Rohit didn't do anything either. But at least Rohit would have been in his destructive mood for ODIs (We haven't won a ODI series in South Africa either, that is also some achievement if made!) Rohit's cuts and pulls would have come good on the placid South African fast pitches (usually flat for ODIs) Now his confidence should be shattered a bit after these failures...

End of the most selfish innings by Pujara. Game is right back into balance now 50/50.

Don’t we have anyone better than Parthiv Patel? Surely there must be someone who could have been called up as a backup to Saha and groomed.. Any youngster can’t do any worse than Parthiv.

Pujara might have saved his career here for now. The scary thought here is that Rohit would now again replace Rahane for the England tour.

Look at his pathetic strike rate. And now You can see wickets are falling like pack of cards.

You do realise it’s a test match where bowlers have the upper hand?

Selfish innings just makes you look clueless, stick to Cricinfo. Call it boring innings or scratchy or whatever but to call it selfish is blasphemy.

So on a pitch where no batsman has looked comfortable he not only looks comfortable but also scores 50 and you moan about his strike rate, last I checked this was a test match not a t20

Where are Rahane fans? He is badly out of Form and there was a reason why he was dropped the first 2 Tests. You can debate on his replacement (Rohit).

Rahane was made to look like a tailender even by Lankan pacers. If he was an Aussie he would have been dropped long back.

Oh look pujara goes and collapse starts, who would have guessed? Where are the geniuses calling him poor now?

Said it before saying again Pandya's 90 runs inning costed us series and balance which was needed in side.

Pandya thought he could smack the trundler Phalukawayo. Intention was right. But he forgot that the ball is still seaming a bit and pull shots are not easy to pull off.

That was Afridi-esque

We'll always love Lala but damn he was frustrating :afridi

Irresponsible and pathetic shot by Pandya, he played the shot as he was batting with Kohli instead of a tailender. India crawled whole day to get 250+ and he screwed the chances with a nonsensical hit. Another joke player against extra bounce.

I love the powderpuff bowlers who get wickets. Phehlukwayo is a favorite of mine and not just because he resembles Malcolm X a little bit.

Kohli is so dumb that he would have played him anyways

I would say Bhuvi is 10 times better batsman than Pandya and as bowler there isn't even comparision. Even Shami can score few runs which pandya does.

I don't mind Bhuvaneshwar Kumar coming at No.5 if our batting unit is so fragile! (We got that clue even in our home matches where the top order used to fail and the lower order used to contribute. We should have groomed some alternative batsmen by then!) But still I will stick on to the fact that Rahane & Rahul should have been our first choice from 1st test onward + a couple of practice matches. Else Rahane should not have been in the squad and somebody else specialist other than Dhawan should have been our backup opener...

Who should replace Pandya? Rohit? :))

At least Pandya can bowl and get a few wickets and he is a gun fielder.

Spot on. I can't even count how many times Bhuvi has rescued us from precarious positions in last few years.

When pitch is doing a lot, even powderpuff bowlers look like Marshals.

Steve O'Keefe for example destroyed India not too long ago where the ball was turning square. When there is to much help on offer, even average bowlers will look threatening.

I would play either proper 6 batsman or proper 5 bowlers. Not bits and pieces players like pandya.

What are the other options? For all other options SA bowling attack and conditions would be completely alien so they might have fared even worse..

I think our batting depth is just not strong enough to compete in SA conditions now.. Maybe next generation will be better.

There are no specialists openers available who are better than the current ones picked.

Lol.. Bhuvneswar is good enough to play as a specialist batsman when we tour overseas. It was criminal to drop him in the 2nd test.

Who is the proper 6th batsman? Rohit? :))

Pandya will score the same number of runs as Rohit and can also bowl and get a few wickets with the ball. What will Rohit offer? A stylish 5 runs?
