An Indian bowling attack
If needed, Delhi Capitals can field Mukesh Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Khaleel Ahmed, and – if fit – Ishant Sharma, and use their entire overseas quota on power-hitters. They already have David Warner and Mitchell Marsh, who can also chip in with overs. On pitches that demand them, Delhi can always switch to one of Anrich Nortje and Lungi Ngidi.

Starc, Shahrukh and Ravindra among showstoppers: Five players who could fetch the highest price tags in IPL 2024 auction

The 2024 IPL Auction will be held in Dubai on Tuesday.

The auction for the 2024 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is inching closer. This will be a mini-action but there is bound to be some big money thrown about and some big moves being made considering the kind of the players that some teams have released and some of the the names that are up for grabs. A total of ₹250 crore is on the table for 77 slots in the event that will be held on Tuesday. It marks the first time that the auction will be held outside India, with Dubai being the destination that has been decided on.

There are quite a few star names in the auction pool this year along with some young names who could have bidding wars in their names. Let's take a look at the five players who could make it big this season in the auction.

1.Shahrukh Khan (Base price: ₹40 lakh)
The only explanation that one can think of for Punjab Kings to let go of Shahrukh Khan has to be the fact that he had a rather mediocre season in domestic white-ball cricket. It would be a big surprise if Punjab Kings themselves bid for him to return, considering they could've potentially retained him.

2.Mitchell Starc (Base price: ₹2 crore)
It has always been a case of will he or won't he with Mitchell Starc. The Australia fast bowler won his second World Cup title this year and has not played in the IPL since 2015. He has often been a prime candidate for the most expensive buy in the past and now despite being 34 and in the final years of his career, Starc remains a hot property. He could still end up being the most expensive buy among them all.

3. Rachin Ravindra (Base price: ₹50 lakh)
It would be in keeping with the trend this year if Rachin Ravindra ends up fetching big bucks at the auction. Ravindra would not have been part of New Zealand's 2023 World Cup squad had it not been for Michael Bracewell being injured. He wouldn't have got his first chance to prove himself in a warm-up game had Will Young not been rested and he would've never played a game in the World Cup if captain Kane Williamson was fit. All of those things happened in his favour and he made the most of it and more. Ravindra was at home in Indian conditions and the fact that he is a very useful spinner only shoots up his value.

4.Harshal Patel (Base price: ₹2 crore)
Like PBKS and Shahrukh Khan, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) releasing Harshal Patel raised quite a few eyebrows. He had a terrible season in 2023. Having made a name for himself by making it tough for batters to score against him, Harshal went at INR 11.50 crore earlier this year. This doesn't diminish his value one bit and on the contrary, Harshal could end up being one of the most expensive players of this auction. High-pressure situations like the powerplay and, especially, the deathovers were the periods he made his own before last season. Moreover, he is an experienced domestic player.

5. Wanindu Hasaranga (Base price: ₹1.5 crore)
Another player who could potentially be the subject of a bidding war, Wanindu Hasaranga is pretty much the complete T20 package. He is a wily spinner, can hit quite a few big ones in the lower middle order and is a highly reliable fielder. In the 2022 auction, RCB had been locked in a fierce bidding war for him with PBKS and Sunrisers Hyderabad. He will be the first spinner bowling all-rounder who will be available in the first list of all-rounders and there are pretty much no established wrist-spinners of his calibre and with his all-round skills in the entire pool.

Rachin doesn't have much international experience in T20s but most feel he'll be selected because of his potential, popularity with Indian fans and family origin.

He's a competent enough SLA which will ensure he goes for plenty. IPL values multi dimensional players. If he were just a regular bat, he might have gone unsold.

Mallika Sagar’s introduction to the world of auctioneering came when, as a teenager in her hometown Mumbai, she read a book with a female auctioneer as its protagonist.

“And, perhaps, a bit frivolously, I thought: ‘That’s what I want to be,’” she recollects with a chuckle.

Three decades on, Sagar finds herself at the helm of making history.

After a successful 23-year career in art auctioneering, she is set to become the first female auctioneer at the richest franchise cricket league in the world when she takes the stage at the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) 2024 auction in Dubai on Tuesday.

More than 300 cricketers will go under the hammer during the daylong event, which will be a breakaway from a trend that has seen only men – Welshman Richard Madley, Briton Hugh Edmeades and India’s Charu Sharma – spearhead the event.

“It’s extremely exciting to be asked to conduct an IPL auction,” Sagar told Al Jazeera during an hourlong chat at her Mumbai office last week.

Sagar was born into a business family in the capital of India’s Maharashtra state and has lived in the city since her return, from the United States, where she graduated with a degree in the history of art.

Now a specialist in modern art and an auctioneer at a privately-owned Mumbai-based auction house, she has long been a pathbreaker on the global art auctioneering circuit. In 2001, she became the first female auctioneer of Indian origin at the international art and luxury business Christie’s.

Clad in a yellow drop-waist dress and with a cup of green tea in hand, Sagar explained how auctioneering is more down to personality and skills than gender.

“You could be the most engaging male auctioneer, the most boring female auctioneer or vice versa – it’s about personality and skills."

The 48-year-old has been responsible for wielding the gavel at both the player auctions for the Women’s Premier League (WPL), India’s IPL-style five-team franchise tournament for women.

“Sport is gendered, so to be part of something where women cricketers have a platform at the highest level and the chance to be financially independent doing what they love, was really special.”

Being one of the few female auctioneers in India, Sagar acknowledged that the inaugural WPL auction in February may have been an unwitting stepping stone to bring her to the IPL auction, a far more scaled-up affair than its WPL equivalent.

Cricket is revolutionizing with time. Now we are seeing diversity. After women's cricketers, umpires, and commentators, we are now seeing a female auctioneer.

Rachin Ravindra will get top 3 highest bids, if not the highest. Thakur will also be one for the Top 5 highest earners surely in this auction. Others are unpredictable. Some random joe might get the highest bid out of nowhere, if he comes in at the right moment.

Sunrisers have picked up 2 of the best in the business, Travis Head and Hasaranga. They have stolen the show with these 2 picks for me.

Phil salt was brilliant in the west indies series recently. Amazing that he is unsold.

20 crores for Cummins is kind of insane. Happy go see Daryl Mitchell get 14 crores

My God 20 cr for Cummins and 24.7 cr for Starc .that is huge money no wonder players are choosing IPL . it's life changing money

Josh Hazlewood - unsold (due to availability issues).
Adil Rashid - Unsold

Getting hasranga at base price was daylight robbery .

PL 2024 Auction Updates: Mitchell Starc has been roped in by KKR for a whopping Rs 24.75 crore - the highest-ever price for an IPL player ever!

Starc joins KKR for £2.35mn.
So that's the annual salary for the duration of the contract, minus any games missed, injured etc? Am I right? So Archer was among the highest paid English players in the IPL, does he get the money if he's unable to play?
