Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik dissolved the state assembly this evening as both Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference leader Sajad Lone and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti staked claim to form government in the state.
While Sajad Lone claimed he has the support of 26 BJP legislators and 18 others, which would cross the majority mark of 44 in the 87-member assembly, Peoples Democratic Party leader Mehbooba Mufti says she has the support of the Congress and the National Conference, taking their total to 56.
Ms Mufti tweeted her letter to the governor, claiming she had been trying to fax it, unsuccessfully, after failing to contact him on the phone.
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Have been trying to send this letter to Rajbhavan. Strangely the fax is not received. Tried to contact HE Governor on phone. Not available. Hope you see it <a href="https://twitter.com/jandkgovernor?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@jandkgovernor</a> <a href="https://t.co/wpsMx6HTa8">pic.twitter.com/wpsMx6HTa8</a></p>— Mehbooba Mufti (@MehboobaMufti) <a href="https://twitter.com/MehboobaMufti/status/1065255025297911808?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">November 21, 2018</a></blockquote>

"As you are aware that Peoples Democratic Party is the largest party in the State assembly having a strength of 29. You might have gathered from the media reports that the Congress and National Conference has a strength of 15 and the Congress 12. That takes over collective strength to 56," her letter reads.
Sajad Lone's claim emerged minutes after this tweet. He tweeted: "We have sent a letter to His Excellency the Governor staking our claim to form the government. Fax not working. We have WhatsApped it to the PA to his excellency."
Critics of the BJP say that dissolving the assembly is an attempt to thwart the alliance of Mehbooba Mufti, Omar Abdullah and the Congress from taking charge of the state; they together claimed 56 MLAs, 12 more than needed to take power. However, Sajid Lone, who also staked claim, alleged that he had the support of not just the BJP but another 18 legislators, meaning that the "Grand Alliance's" numbers were a misrepresentation.
COMMENT
The BJP dumped the PDP and forced Mehbooba Mufti to quit as chief minister in June, which was followed by six-month central rule that ends next month.
