The midwinter window is open and will close on 31 January – what do the Premier League clubs want and who can they get?

Arsenal

Unai Emery is two men down because of long-term injuries to Rob Holding and Danny Welbeck and so he would be open to adding a defender and striker. But with Aaron Ramsey on his way out and the continuing uncertainty over Mesut Özil, what he really wants is a new midfielder. David Hytner

Bournemouth

A spate of knee injuries has left Eddie Howe with a defensive crisis, particularly at right-back with Simon Francis and Adam Smith sidelined. Howe has stated how January is a notoriously difficult time to recruit, but injuries have forced him into a rethink. Links to Nathaniel Clyne make sense, and Howe admires Brentford’s Chris Mepham. Keeping hold of Callum Wilson, a Chelsea target, will be crucial. Ben Fisher

Brighton & Hove Albion

Chris Hughton has been trying to reduce the burden on Glenn Murray ever since promotion. Attempts to lure the Liverpool forward Dominic Solanke appear to have failed, though Jürgen Locadia’s form has eased anxiety. They have also been linked with Tunisia’s Youssef Msakni. The Rangers captain James Tavernier and Wigan playmaker Nick Powell were previously of interest. BF

Sean Dyche has described Burnley as minnows when it comes to matching other Premier League clubs for spending power, which is why they frequently raid the Championship in their search for value. The same may happen this January, as long as Burnley can convince targets they are not about to return to the Championship, with West Brom’s Jay Rodriguez and Matt Phillips among the usual suspects, along with Conor Hourihane of Aston Villa. Paul Wilson

Cardiff City
Neil Warnock said on Saturday that Cardiff had “nine or 10 concrete inquiries in for players”, which provides an indication of how desperate he is to strengthen. He would like to take Nathaniel Clyne on loan from Liverpool but the priority remains a proven striker. A budget of £10-12m feels realistic. Stuart James

Chelsea
Chelsea are attempting to secure Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund for the summer, and have spoken to Juventus and Milan about taking Gonzalo Higuaín on loan. If the latter arrives, Álvaro Morata could depart to San Siro in a similar arrangement. Yet the priority could be squad trimming, with Victor Moses, Gary Cahill and Danny Drinkwater likely to leave, and Tammy Abraham, currently on loan at Aston Villa, potentially also on the move. Dominic Fifield

Palace have needed a natural goalscorer all season, and are confident of securing Dominic Solanke on loan from Liverpool. They lack the budget to invest heavily mid-season but may be tempted to add another forward-thinking player, which would allow them to cancel Jordan Ayew’s loan from Swansea and send out Alexander Sørloth for greater game-time. DF

Everton
Marcel Brands, Everton’s director of football, has stated this will be the quietest window for some time at Goodison Park. “It is not a goal to sell, it’s not a goal to bring in new players,” he said. The need for a quality striker and to secure André Gomes on a permanent deal is pressing, however. Andy Hunter

Fulham
Fulham may have to cancel Timothy Fosu-Mensah’s loan to bring in another temporary signing from the Premier League, but they will surely find money to spend on permanent deals, even after a vast summer outlay, given their desperation to stay up. They will be tempted to invest in Chelsea’s potential rejects. Danny Drinkwater, after all, has flourished under Claudio Ranieri before.

Huddersfield Town

With 12 goals in 20 league matches – and none from their centre-forwards – Huddersfield are crying out for players who can give them a cutting edge, starting with a clinical finisher. David Wagner has said they will do “everything we can” to improve their attack. That may mean breaking the club’s transfer record of £17.5m. Paul Doyle

Leicester City
Leicester will be looking to trim rather than add to their bloated and imbalanced squad, with Andy King and Adrien Silva, two of seven central midfielders, expected to depart. The out-of-favour Shinji Okazaki could move on, too. The perennial question for Leicester is where do they find a deputy for Jamie Vardy? SJ

Despite repeated links to Borussia Dortmund’s Christian Pulisic Jürgen Klopp maintains he is unlikely to move in the January market unless circumstances change and dictate otherwise. Liverpool were the biggest spenders in the summer as they built with a title challenge in mind and a healthy lead at new year has vindicated their planning. AH

Manchester City

The champions insist there will be no incomings, yet given the lack of competition to 33-year-old Fernandinho another defensive midfielder would be welcomed by Pep Guardiola. Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele is one potential candidate – and his asking price of around £55m is affordable. Left-back is another problem area; Leicester’s Ben Chilwell may, again, be of interest. Jamie Jackson

As always there will be sizeable funds available. A centre-back is the prime requirement for the interim manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, given the lack of clean sheets. Porto’s Éder Militão, Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld, Leicester City’s Harry Maguire and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly may be ideal but whether any can be prised away in the winter window is the challenge. JJ

Newcastle United

Rafael Benítez wants a playmaker – ideally Atlanta United’s 24-year-old Paraguay international Miguel Almirón – a left-back, a winger and an extra striker. Whether he gets any of those – or even one player on the shopping list – remains to be seen. No one in and around the first-team squad is for sale. Louise Taylor

Southampton

Southampton blew their modest January budget on Mark Hughes’s severance package and the new manager, Ralph Hasenhüttl, wants to trim the squad. He would listen to offers for Cédric Soares, Manolo Gabbiadini, Fraser Forster and Steven Davis. A new right-back and pace in the final third would be welcome. DH

Tottenham

Mauricio Pochettino resorted to mime when asked whether he would make any January signings, turning his pocket inside out to indicate it was empty. Spurs have no money, as they wrestle with their £1bn stadium project, and any incoming business would have to be funded by outgoings – Mousa Dembélé being one possibility. DH

Watford

Watford do not intend to sell any members of their first-team squad but some peripheral players will be made available on loan, and they are open to making a small number of signings, in particular a central defender. They would like a proven goalscorer, but given salary constraints and with their need not desperate they may wait until the summer. Simon Burnton

West Ham United

Manuel Pellegrini spent heavily last summer but an injury crisis could force the manager to dip into the market again. Samir Nasri is set to join on a free when his doping ban ends and Pellegrini also wants more depth in central midfield. Gary Medel, the experienced Besiktas midfielder, could be available for a modest fee. Jacob Steinberg

Wolves
Nuno Espírito Santo gives nothing away about Wolves’ transfer plans, but the club are known to be looking for another striker to provide some competition and cover for Raúl Jiménez. Identifying the right players midway through a season, rather than coming up with the money, is the issue for Wolves. SJ

Why no section for Burnley? :( There is stuff about Burnley but they not been given a bold heading like all the other teams :(

Signings will start once the hangover ends:sarf2

What's that noise you can hear?

With the New Year upon us, the transfer rumour mill is cranking back into action.

Whether chasing the title, aiming for promotion, or looking to avoid relegation, managers will be looking for their chairmen to pull out the chequebooks to sign the players who can make that crucial difference.

Paul Pogba, Isco and Adrien Rabiot are just some of the names being linked with a transfer.

BBC Sport takes a look at players who could be on the move in January.

Premier League
PAUL POGBA (25, midfielder, Manchester United)

Paul Pogba
Praying for a move?
Linked with: Juventus, Barcelona, Paris St-Germain.

The biggest name on our list. The world's most expensive player at the time of joining Manchester United from Juventus for £89m in 2016, BBC Sport's gossip column has been packed with reports that Pogba's time at Old Trafford could end for the second time this January.

Dropped from the team in December, including against rivals Liverpool, the France World Cup winner has been of interest to former club Juventus amid reports of a £125m bid, with Barcelona and PSG also said to be circling.

But the departure of manager Jose Mourinho, with whom he had a fractured relationship, has lifted the gloom at Old Trafford and it remains to be seen whether a more liberated role in the side changes circumstances for Pogba or not.

DANNY DRINKWATER (28, midfielder, Chelsea)

Linked with: West Ham, Fulham.

Premier League winner Drinkwater's move to Chelsea has not gone to plan - he even missed out on their Europa League squad. His only appearance this season came in the Community Shield loss to Manchester City and he has been told by manager Maurizio Sarri he can leave.

The 28-year-old former Leicester player would add some steel in the middle of the park, and a reunion with ex-Foxes boss Claudio Ranieri at Fulham is a possibility.

GARY CAHILL (33, defender, Chelsea)

Linked with: Arsenal, AC Milan, Aston Villa, Fulham.

Another Chelsea outcast who has failed to break into the team under Maurizio Sarri, Cahill is down the defensive pecking order at Stamford Bridge and has been told he too is free to go.

Possessing plenty of experience on the club and international stage, as well as a healthy looking trophy cabinet, Cahill would not be short of offers from top clubs in the Premier League, Championship and, perhaps more surprisingly, Serie A.

Elsewhere, Bayern Munich have reportedly made a £20m bid for Chelsea teenager Callum Hudson-Odoi, while team-mates Cesc Fabregas, Victor Moses and Andreas Christensen may also be on the way out.

BRAHIM DIAZ (19, midfielder, Manchester City)

Brahim Diaz
Diaz is out of contract in the summer and is growing frustrated with limited first-team opportunities.

The Spain Under-21 international is one of the country's brightest prospects and may follow in the footsteps of Jadon Sancho by trying his luck outside the Premier League.

Reports in Spain say La Liga giants Real Madrid have agreed a £13.6m deal, with the player to receive £60,000 a week in wages.

JERMAIN DEFOE (36, striker, Bournemouth)

Linked with: Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, Sheffield United, Wigan.

Former England international Defoe has found game time hard to come by this season, playing fewer than 30 minutes in the Premier League.

Seventh on the Premier League's all-time top scorers list with 162 goals, Defoe is a proven finishers and could do a short-term job for a team in need of a striker, despite his advancing years.

DOMINIC SOLANKE (21, striker, Liverpool)

Linked with: Crystal Palace, Huddersfield, Brighton.

Solanke, who has won one cap for England, is yet to make a first-team appearance for Liverpool this season, having failed to make the breakthrough expected of him.

Numerous Premier League sides are interested in a loan move and Solanke has also been linked to clubs in the Championship as well as outside England.

Also look out for whether goalkeeper Simon Mignolet stays at Anfield, with the Belgian firmly second choice behind summer signing Alisson.

ADRIEN SILVA (29, midfielder, Leicester)

Linked with: Sporting Lisbon.

What a farce this transfer has turned out to be for Leicester. The Foxes agreed to sign the midfielder for £22m on deadline day in the summer of 2017, but missed filing the paperwork by 14 seconds. He stayed at Sporting Lisbon and did not play until January.

But 12 months on from his debut and only 19 appearances later (three this season), Silva now seems to be heading back to his old club in Portugal.

TOM HEATON (32, goalkeeper, Burnley)

Linked with: Aston Villa, Leeds.

Having missed most of last season with a shoulder injury, Heaton's number one spot at Turf Moor was taken by England international Nick Pope, and he fell further out of the reckoning after the signing of Joe Hart in the summer.

Though he has recently been restored to the starting line-up, Heaton may want more guaranteed game time, with Championship sides Aston Villa and Leeds interested.

STEVEN DAVIS (33, midfielder, Southampton)

Linked with: Rangers.

Despite Southampton's struggles in the league, ex-captain Davis has barely featured this season. His luck has not changed under new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, and the Northern Ireland international is likely to be allowed to leave in January.

A return to Rangers seems his most likely move, with manager Steven Gerrard recently calling Davis "a top player and a great guy".

OUMAR NIASSE (28, striker, Everton)

Oumar Niasse
Will Niasse sign for Cardiff or Huddersfield?
Linked with: Cardiff, Huddersfield, Crystal Palace.

Niasse netted eight Premier League goals for Everton last season but has since been restricted to four substitute appearances in the league and has reportedly been made available for transfer by the Toffees.

Given Niasse was signed for about £13m in 2016, manager Marco Silva will have to accept a cut-price deal to sell the Senegal striker, who could provide Cardiff and Huddersfield with the firepower they need.

Team-mate James McCarthy has returned to full fitness after a double leg break and might also be allowed to leave on loan.

EFL
BRADLEY DACK (25, midfielder, Blackburn)

Linked with: West Ham, Crystal Palace.

Dack's goalscoring exploits in the EFL have not gone unnoticed, and he has attracted interest from clubs in the Premier League.

The attacking midfielder scored 18 goals as Blackburn were promoted to the Championship last season and his form has continued in the second tier, with nine goals so far.

KEMAR ROOFE (25, striker, Leeds)

Linked with: Wolves, Crystal Palace, Southampton, Palermo.

Former Oxford forward Roofe has been in superb form for Leeds this season, scoring 13 goals as Marcelo Bielsa's side push for promotion to the Premier League.

A host of Premier League clubs are reportedly keen on bringing him in, while Serie B side Palermo have also been linked.

MAX AARONS (18, full-back, Norwich)

Max Aarons
The highly rated Aarons has won four caps for England Under-19s
Linked with: Tottenham, RB Leipzig.

Despite only making his debut in August, Norwich teenager Aarons is regarded as one of the most exciting full-backs in the Championship.

The performances for the Canaries in his breakthrough season have brought attention from Premier League side Tottenham, who could make a £15m move, as well as Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig.

NEAL MAUPAY (22, forward, Brentford)

Linked with: Huddersfield.

Brentford may be battling at the wrong end of the Championship, but France youth international Maupay has been a shining light, with 14 goals and six assists this season.

With Huddersfield the lowest scorers in the top flight this season, Maupay could provide much-needed goals in a £10m move.

JARROD BOWEN (22, winger, Hull)

Linked with: Cardiff, Fulham, Leeds.

Another player performing well for a struggling team. Bowen was Hull players' and supporters' player of the year last season and has found the net eight times this campaign.

Would the winger fancy swapping Hull for clubs such as Cardiff or Fulham, who are finding life difficult in the top flight?

LLOYD KELLY (20, defender, Bristol City)

Linked with: Liverpool, Manchester United.

England youth international Kelly has been Bristol City's standout performer in the Championship this season and is highly thought of at Ashton Gate.

Described by manager Lee Johnson as an "absolute beast", the speedy Kelly may soon be in the top flight if his impressive performances continue.

DEDRYCK BOYATA (28, defender, Celtic)

Linked with: Fulham.

Premier League strugglers Fulham had a bid for Belgium international Boyata rejected in the summer and, with the Cottagers shipping goals this season, they could come back in for the Celtic centre-back.

Boyata's contract with the Scottish Premiership champions expires in the summer and they may look to cash in if a reasonable offer arrives in January.

JORDAN JONES (24, midfielder, Kilmarnock)

Linked with: Rangers, Swansea, Burnley.

Northern Ireland international Jones has played an integral role in Kilmarnock's surprise challenge for the Scottish Premiership title.

Jones' contract expires in the summer and Rangers could come back in for the player, having previously had a £350,000 offer rejected.

WES FODERINGHAM (27, goalkeeper, Rangers)

Linked with: Leeds.

Despite their long injury list, Leeds are in the mix for promotion back to the Premier League but are desperately in need of a back-up goalkeeper.

Should a move for Burnley's Heaton not come off, Rangers number two Foderingham has reportedly been targeted as a potential signing.

Around Europe...
ISCO (26, midfielder, Real Madrid)

Linked with: Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal.

Spain international Isco has not been helped by the managerial changes at the Bernabeu and, after being a regular under Zinedine Zidane, has been a bit-part player under Santiago Solari.

Isco was booed by his own fans during the home Champions League loss by CSKA Moscow, and Chelsea are reportedly ready to make a hefty £70m offer.

ADRIEN RABIOT (23, midfielder, Paris St-Germain)

Linked with: Liverpool, Chelsea, Barcelona.

Frenchman Rabiot's future with Ligue 1 champions PSG is in major doubt after reportedly refusing a number of new contract offers, with his current deal set to expire in the summer.

The 23-year-old has long been linked with a move to Liverpool, but Barcelona are frontrunners at the moment in what would be a bargain £4.5m deal.

MATTHIJS DE LIGT (19, defender, Ajax)

De Ligt's stats on Football Manager (football-oranje.com)
Ball-playing defender De Ligt's stats on Football Manager 2019 at the start of the game (football-oranje.com)
Linked with: Manchester City, Barcelona, Juventus.

Listed as a "wonderkid" on Football Manager, so he must be good? De Ligt is living up to the virtual hype by following in the footsteps of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Paul Pogba in claiming the Golden Boy award for the most promising under-21 player in Europe.

Captain of Ajax and already with 13 Netherlands caps, De Ligt, who is valued at £63m, has a bright future and looks set for a big-money move to one of Europe's giant clubs.

CHRISTIAN PULISIC (20, winger, Borussia Dortmund)

Linked with: Liverpool, Chelsea.

A mixture of injury and the startling form of Sancho means USA international Pulisic has had to be content with a role off the bench in Borussia Dortmund's rise to the top of the Bundesliga.

German football expert Raphael Honigstein told BBC Radio 5 live: "Pulisic has refused to renew his contract beyond 2020 and Dortmund know the summer is the latest that he will have to be sold.

"He is not a starter in the big games so if someone wants to bring the move forward (to January) with an extra 20m euros, Dortmund may decide it is not the worst thing."

Former Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp reportedly wants to take him to Liverpool, and there is also interest from Chelsea.

TIMOTHY WEAH (18, striker, Paris St-Germain)

Timothy Weah
Son of Liberia president and former AC Milan and Paris St-Germain striker George Weah, Timothy broke into the PSG first team last season and has continued his development this term.

But a loan move away in January is a strong possibility, with Celtic reportedly the USA international's preferred choice. Ligue 1 strugglers Amiens have also made contact.

TANGUY NDOMBELE (22, midfielder, Lyon)

Linked with: Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham.

Energetic box-to-box midfielder Ndombele has helped Lyon into the last 16 of the Champions League and also made his France debut this season.

French football journalist Julien Laurens said Ndombele has been a "revelation" since joining from Amiens last summer, but an eye-watering £90m may be needed to secure his signature.

ANDREAS SAMARIS (29, midfielder, Benfica)

Linked with: Newcastle.

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez enquired about Greece international Samaris in the summer but was put off by the £10m asking price.

With the midfielder's contract expiring at the end of the season, Benitez is reportedly looking at trying to sign him for a much lower fee.

NICOLAS PEPE (23, winger, Lille)

Linked with: Arsenal, Tottenham, Barcelona.

Ivory Coast international Pepe has caught the eye of high-profile clubs after an impressive 25 goals and nine assists in 55 league games since joining Lille in 2017.

With Pepe valued at about £45m, Unai Emery's Arsenal are said to be leading the race to sign the winger.

And one from MLS...
MIGUEL ALMIRON (24, midfielder, Atlanta United)

Linked with: Newcastle, Arsenal.

Paraguay international Almiron has made a stunning impact for Atlanta since signing from Argentine side Lanus in 2016, with 12 goals and 13 assists in the league and leading them to MLS Cup glory in their second season in the competition.

Described as "pacy, with a terrific left foot", a big-money move - for as much as £25m - to the Premier League with Newcastle or Arsenal could happen in January.

Additional reporting by BBC Sport's Tom Garry

Chelsea have signed Borussia Dortmund forward Christian Pulisic for 64m euros (£58m), but will loan him back to the German club until the end of the season.

The 20-year-old United States international, who was linked with Liverpool and Arsenal, joined Dortmund as a youth player in 2015.

Pulisic has scored nine goals in 23 games for the US.

"It's a privilege to have signed for such a legendary club," he said.

It is the highest transfer fee for an American player, beating the 20m euros Wolfsburg paid for John Brooks in 2017.

Dortmund director Michael Zorc said: "It was always Christian's dream to play in the Premier League.

"That certainly has to do with his American background, and as a result we were unable to extend his contract.

"Against this background, we have decided to accept an extremely lucrative bid by Chelsea, given the low contract maturity."

Pulisic's contract at Dortmund was due to expire in June 2020.

In an emotional statement on Twitter, Pulisic said he will leave Dortmund with a "heavy heart".

"It feels like only yesterday that I arrived in Dortmund as a raw, excited, very nervous but exceptionally proud 16-year-old from a small American town called Hershey," he said.

"I would not be here without the club and their belief in giving young players a chance. Many memorable moments stand out - to have experienced all of them before my 20th birthday, still feels at times like a dream.

"For the next six months, it's all BVB. Please do not doubt my passion, determination and my 110% commitment to the team right until the last ball is kicked this season."

'One of Europe's most sought-after young players'
Pulisic made his Bundesliga debut, aged 17, in January 2016, and two months later won his first USA cap.

He has played 81 games in the German top flight and 20 in the Champions League.

He has scored three goals in 18 appearances in all competitions for Dortmund this season.

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia described Pulisic as "one of Europe's most sought-after young players".

"At just 20, we believe he has the potential to become an important Chelsea player for many years to come," she said.

Pulisic is the first major Premier League signing since the transfer window opened on 1 January.

His is the third highest fee paid for a Bundesliga player, after Ousmane Dembele's £135m move from Dortmund to Barcelona in 2017 and Manchester City's £55m deal for Kevin de Bruyne from Wolfsburg in 2015.

Chelsea are fourth in the Premier League, 11 points behind leaders Liverpool.

Dortmund lead the Bundesliga by six points and will face Tottenham in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Liverpool were also interested in Christian Pulisic but a good snap for Chelsea. They have a lot of good midfield players but he's young and very skillful. A good investment.

I understand the problem for MCity, Liverpool & MU, therefore all 3 are caught in between. One by one this is my thoughts -

ManCity : Pep still has the best squad with literally 2 world class & extremely expensive players at every position. Unfortunately for him, he doesn't have a back-up Left Back & a defensive mid-fielder - exactly those 2 positions have suffered injury crisis. Pep plays a brilliant fluid soccer, but that's his limitation as well - he has managed three of the richest & most resourceful (in terms of talent pool) clubs, and he hasn't developed the capacity to manage with make shift options - last he tried was Stones as DM!!!! He is a brilliant chef - give him ingredients, he'll make delicious food.

He is facing 3 fold problems in JAN window - 1. financials - ManCity is among the highest spender since Pep joined and most of the players are at high wage, FFP is going to an issue for them. Mansoor's brother has been exposed with his accounting and they have already got caught in 2 financial misconducts - Mansoor's other concerns are their sponsors who are paying over the top for shirt & stadium to balance books; then they have faked higher ticket sales to show higher match day gate. At this point, if the spree in transfermkt, I am sure they'll face some sort of financial inquiry. 2. Pep's team plays unique brand of soccer and it's near impossible to integrate new players in his system. If they try to buy out of trouble, it might not still work, because I don't see any weakness in their XI or squad, adding numbers might not help. 3. ManCity already has the most expensive squad in world, at per with Barca, but now going through a temporary crisis both in terms of fitness & form - average buys won't solve their problem, while top players might not be interested to join MCity (unless obnoxious wage is paid, which isn't easy for them for already loaded wage bill), because once their regulars returns from injury, new recruits will go on to bench.

My hunch is Pep will try to bring 2 players max - 1 Left Back (Ben Chillwell), and a DM from Lyon, they have two of the best young CM/DMs to sell : Houssem Aouar & Tanguy Ndombele. But, Chilwell will cost over 35mn (English Home Grown), while any of the 2 hottest French prospect will cost over 60mn - that's close to 100mn.

ManU: JMou has spent around 375mn gross in 2.5 years, net spending is still probably over 300mn. That's crazy money for already a over priced squad, but most of Mou's purchase betrayed his formation (I doubt if all of them were his buys). MU is the only club who still can pay any fee or offer any wage, still it won't hurt their FFP obligation, but Glazers won't accept loss. And Edward has another problem - if they decide not to make Ole Gunna permanent, probably Glazers won't sanction big money in January. Already 3 Managerial change has cost them lot and most of their aging players need to be replaced. My hunch is, MU'll buy to cover the essential spots - defense. To be honest, they have enough resources to finish in top 4 (which is now their only realistic target - without CL, it'll cost them 30-35% more to acquire players in July). If Zidane do agree to join in July (which will be agreed by now), I see Varane & Pavard joining MU (even this window, Varane's release clause is around 100mn, he is definitely worthy of that in this market), may be Kante as well, because Sarri is in favor of Jorginho at DM than Kante; but, MU might not spend much in January, rather allow Ole to bring the house in order. MU is going to be the busiest club in July for sure.

Liverpool : We have been extremely lucky regarding fitness issues this year and there is no African Cup of Nations. Therefore, with current squad, I don't think Klopp needs many to buy, or at most he'll sell to buy. Problem for Klopp is, in some positions, his squad is extremely thin - Left Back, Centre Back, CF and obviously Coutinho's replacement. It's the brilliance of VVD, Allisson, and the forward 3 (and a bit of luck as well) has kept LFC 6 points ahead, which should be enough to win the League. Klopp has the highest amount of money to spend (in terms of FFP), as he has been running net positive since this window, brought few players from academy, didn't change his core much for Rogers' squad; also LFC's wage bill is 5th among top 6 - so, he can buy.

Players are available as well, and Klopp can rotate his strike which should allow him to integrate few top players without upsetting anyone. Problem is, this is an extremely happy LFC squad in great harmony - bringing couple of new faces might be disruptive for dressing room. I can recall Newcastle United - they were like 10 points ahead by December (12 on 1st week of FEB), then Keegan bought Fastiano Asprilla, one of the best forwards at that time and he had to do minor adjustments, NU failed in EPL race after January.

I don't think Klopp is looking for major buys, more so, if we avoid defeat tomorrow. May be he'll bring a Left Back (Loyd Kelly, ENG U21 Captain) as Robertson's back-up, and any player that they can buy cheap (player running down contract), like Rabiot. But, what I expect is, he might buy players on pre-contract and allow the player to stay at current club till season end. I expect a mass clear out in July, and several U23 faces joining LFC, but January will be quite period.

I wanted Pulisic at Anfield. Being an American the marketing opportunity of him being an American has also been passed by Mr Klopp. With Liverpool have a good season I am giving the manager the benefit of the doubt here. Could be that he has someone else lined up.

Why do you think Varane will join Manchester United? Real Madrid would be crazy to sell him. I think Koulibaliy may join Manchester United unfortunately.

Liverpool will sign a number 10 in the summer and a back up for Firmino.

Dominic Solanke: Bournemouth sign striker from Liverpool in £19m deal

Bournemouth have signed England striker Dominic Solanke from Liverpool for £19m.

Solanke, 21, had been due to join Crystal Palace on loan earlier this week but the deal fell through because of fitness concerns.

Bournemouth are about to allow forward Jermain Defoe to join Scottish Premiership side Rangers.

It is understood Solanke cannot move to the Cherries on loan under Premier League regulations.

Bournemouth have also signed Reds right-back Nathaniel Clyne on loan until the end of the season.

"The club is going somewhere - it's a good club to be at, especially for someone of my age," said Solanke.

Cherries boss Eddie Howe said he was "really excited" about working with Solanke.

"Dominic is technically gifted, very athletic and has the physical profile that will give us something different in our front line," said Howe.

Solanke, a former England youth international who has one senior cap against Brazil in 2017, joined Liverpool from Chelsea in 2017 after his contract at Stamford Bridge ended.

The two clubs eventually came to an agreement over the fee, which had been due to be set by a tribunal.

He did not make a first-team appearance for the Premier League leaders this season and was ruled out of recent matches because of a muscle problem.

The Under-20 World Cup winner made 21 appearances last season, 16 of which were from the bench, scoring one goal.

He never made a senior league appearance in three years at Chelsea, spending the 2015-16 season on loan at Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem, where he scored seven goals in 25 Eredivisie appearances.

Brahim Diaz: Real Madrid president Florentino Perez backs signing from Man City

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez says the club has signed a "special talent" after concluding a deal with Manchester City for Brahim Diaz.

The Spanish club acquired the 19-year-old midfielder for around £15m, though the deal also includes around £6.5m in add-ons and a 15% fee if he is sold on.

"This is the most important day in my life," Diaz told reporters on Monday.

"I have joined the club which I have dreamed of playing at since I was a child," he added.

"When I decided it was time to leave Manchester City I only considered three options: the first was joining Real Madrid, the second was playing at Real Madrid and the third and last was playing at Real Madrid. I didn't want to go anywhere else."

Diaz, who joined Manchester City from Malaga in 2013 aged 14, has signed a six-and-a-half-year contract that runs to the summer of 2025.

He only made 15 first-team appearances during his time at City and played just four times this season.

Madrid president Perez said: "This player has a special talent. He has quality, magic and dreams of succeeding at this club. He chose it above others and that energy will help."

Diaz is the latest young player to leave Manchester City in recent seasons, with departures including winger Jadon Sancho, who has starred for England since moving to German side Borussia Dortmund for £8m in 2017.

Following his move, the club have backed their youth policy and concluded Diaz would not displace the likes of Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane and Riyad Mahrez in the City team.

Barcelona renew interest in Chelsea's Willian

Barcelona have renewed their efforts to sign Chelsea forward Willian, proposing a deal which would see Malcom move to Stamford Bridge, according to Sky sources.

Barca tried to sign Willian last summer, making three bids for the Brazil international. The final offer worth more than £55m was rejected in July.

Barcelona signed Malcom instead for £38m from Bordeaux, but the 21-year-old has seen first-team opportunities limited at the Nou Camp, with several more established names ahead of him in the pecking order.

Willian is aged 30 and his Chelsea contract runs out in the summer of 2020, having signed for the club for £30m from Anzhi Makhachkala in 2013.

Manolo Gabbiadini has completed a £12million move from Southampton to Sampdoria.

The 27-year-old joined Saints from Napoli in January 2017 and scored 12 goals in 60 appearances for the club.

But Gabbiadini has found playing time limited and has now returned to Italy, joining Sampdoria in a deal Press Association Sport understands is worth £12million.

Mousa Dembele: Tottenham midfielder nears £11m move to Beijing Guoan

Tottenham midfielder Mousa Dembele has flown to China to complete his £11m move to Chinese Super League club Beijing Guoan.

The 31-year-old Belgium international, who joined from Fulham in 2012, is out of contract in the summer.

He has made 249 appearances for Spurs, but featured just 13 times this season.

A large pay rise and playing in a less physical league are believed to be behind his decision, while Tottenham are trying to trim the squad.

Meanwhile, it is understood Tottenham medical staff will wait for the swelling around Harry Kane's ankle to go down before they get an accurate assessment on the extent of the injury he suffered against Manchester United on Sunday.

Kane was caught in a challenge with Phil Jones and Diogo Dalot in the last minute of the 1-0 defeat.

Pochettino called it 'a bad tackle', although he admitted it was unintentional.

Steven Caulker signs for Turkish side Alanyaspor

Former England defender Steven Caulker has joined Alanyaspor in the Turkish top flight.

The 27-year-old has been without a club since leaving Dundee in September 2018.

Caulker started his career at Tottenham, joined Cardiff for £8m in 2013 and moved to QPR for the same amount a year later.

"He has his own goals. He is only 27 and hopefully he will take his career to a higher level," said Alanyaspor president Hasan Cavusoglu.

"He is big in our expectations," said club president Hasan Cavusoglu.

Caulker had loan spells at Southampton and Liverpool in the 2015-16 season.

He scored the winner on his only England appearance, against Sweden in November 2012, and played for Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics.

In June 2017, he spoke about his struggles with depression, gambling and alcohol addiction.

He has been training with Alanyaspor, who are 14th in the Super Lig.

Not much happening in the market yet. They'll all go berserk on the last day of the window.

Tottenham have agreed a deal to sell midfielder Mousa Dembele to Chinese Super League side Guangzhou R&F.

Dembele, 31, was due to be out of contract in the summer and will move for a fee of around £11m.

He had flown to China to join Beijing Guoan but complications with the deal saw Guangzhou move for the Belgium international.

Dembele joined Tottenham from Fulham in 2012 and made 250 appearances but has only played 13 times this season.

Ashley Cole: Derby County sign veteran ex-England defender

Derby County have signed former England left-back Ashley Cole on a deal until the end of the season.

The 38-year-old, who won 107 caps for his country, is reunited with former Chelsea and international team-mate Frank Lampard, now Derby manager.

Cole featured in 32 games for US Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy last season before leaving in October.

He made 384 Premier League appearances for Arsenal and Chelsea, and also played for Roma in Serie A.

London-born Cole was described by Lampard as the "best English left-back of the recent generation", and has enjoyed a career laden with trophies.

He won the Champions League and Europa League with Chelsea, and also lifted three Premier League titles, seven FA Cups and a League Cup.

Even at the age of 38, which would make him the oldest player to feature in the Championship this season, Lampard is satisfied Cole can be an effective signing.

"He's a fantastic player, a quality left-back, and he also brings great experience to the dressing room," Lampard told the club website.

"I know him very well from our time together at Chelsea, and with England, and I also know what he can bring to the group and the influence he will have.

"Ashley is in good shape, which doesn't surprise me because he's an excellent professional, and he will compete for a place in the side like every other player here.

"I've made my feelings known over the last couple of days just how highly I think of Ashley and I have no doubt whatsoever he will be a positive addition to our squad."

Cole joins a Derby side pushing for promotion to the Premier League, with the Rams sixth in the table after Saturday's win against Reading.

Wolves in talks with Atletico Madrid over £18m deal for Jonny Castro Otto

Wolves are in talks with Atletico Madrid about completing a club record £18m transfer for Jonny Castro Otto.

Defender Otto joined Wolves on loan during the summer and has made 21 appearances in all competitions.

The 24-year-old full-back has impressed on his return after a month out with a knee injury.

He made the move to Wolves straight after joining Atletico from Celta Vigo and could now be leaving Madrid despite never playing for his parent club.

If Wolves reach an agreement it would equal the fee they paid Middlesbrough for winger Adama Traore in July.

Newcastle have broken their transfer record to sign Paraguay playmaker Miguel Almiron from MLS side Atlanta United for around £20m.

It breaks the previous record of £16m that was paid to Real Madrid for Michael Owen in 2005.

Almiron, 24, scored 13 goals last season as Atlanta won the MLS Cup for the first time.

The attacking midfielder previously played for Cerro Porteno in his home country and Argentina's Lanus.

He has scored 21 goals in 62 league appearances over his career.

"I'm very happy and eager to start and to meet my new team-mates," he said. "The league is very competitive, this is a historic club, and Rafa Benitez himself were the main reasons why I am here now.

"I think it is a great responsibility, something beautiful for me, and I will try to offer the best I can to repay the trust the club put in me."

Newcastle have also signed defender Antonio Barreca on loan from Monaco until the end of the season with the option of a permanent deal.

The 23-year-old former Italy under-21 international joined the French club last summer from Torino.

"I know that Newcastle is a big and historic club," he said. "I know that the people here really love football and that the fans are really behind the team."

Youri Tielemans: Leicester confirm loan signing of Monaco midfielder

Leicester have signed Monaco midfielder Youri Tielemans on loan until the end of the season in a deal that sees Adrien Silva go the other way.

Tielemans, 21, has scored five goals in 20 appearances in Ligue 1 this season having joined Monaco from Anderlecht in 2017.

The highly rated Belgium international has 14 caps for his country and played at the 2018 World Cup.

"I'm really excited to get going," Tielemans said.

"The Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world and when I was young, I always watched Premier League games. I'm really happy to be here and I'm excited to get started.

"It's a big family. Everybody is really kind and really good with me. I think it will be really good here."

Who is Tielemans?

Tielemans is the youngest Belgian to ever play in the Champions League, aged 16 years and 148 days when he featured for Anderlecht.

He found the net roughly once every six games for Anderlecht - winning the league title twice - during four seasons and eventually moved for around £22m.

He has started 20 of Monaco's 22 league games this season and scored five league goals but the French side has struggled, leading to the sacking of Thierry Henry.

Only Radamel Falcao - on eight - has scored more goals for Monaco this season and Tielemans has also created 19 chances in his 20 league games.

Silva's problematic Foxes stay over?

Silva has failed to make much of an impact at the King Power Stadium since arriving from Sporting Lisbon for £22m in 2017.

He was forced to wait six months to make his debut after the paperwork arrived with Fifa 14 seconds late and has never really recovered his form, making just two Premier League appearances this season.

The Portugal international is highly rated by new Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim.

Analysis

BBC Radio 5 live reporter John Bennett

Youri Tielemans has always been tipped for big things. At the age of just 16 he made 29 appearances in his first season at Anderlecht and continued to impress in the following campaigns, making his international debut at 19 and winning Belgian footballer of the year prize after his final season in the country's top flight.

It came as a surprise when things didn't work out at Monaco last season - head coach Leonardo Jardim never seemed to trust Tielemans and he spent a lot of time on the bench.

Despite Monaco's terrible form, things improved for him personally when Thierry Henry came in but Jardim's return was probably the last thing he would have wanted.

Now, it's a chance to get his career going again and, at 21, there's plenty of time. Tielemans has got a great range of passing, he can make driving runs forward and having starting his career as a more defensive midfielder he can help to keep things tight at the back. All in all, that makes him the perfect partner for Wilfred Ndidi in the Leicester midfield.

It's a loan move that suits Leicester, suits Tielemans and suits Monaco; they know that if he plays well at the King Power Stadium they'll be even more interest for a big money permanent transfer in the summer.
