England Test captain Joe Root has signed a contract with the Sydney Thunder to play in Australia’s ‘Big Bash’ Twenty20 league to sharpen his game in the format. Root, who will play in an overseas Twenty20 league for the first time, was snubbed by Indian Premier League teams this year and also dropped from the England side for a match against India in July.

Root had expressed fears he could be “left behind” in the format if he did not play it more. He has played just 28 T20 internationals in six years, with six of those games at the World T20 in 2016. “I want to gain as much experience as possible in T20 cricket,” Root said in a statement on the Sydney Thunder’s website on Friday.

“I’m sure there will be some mixed emotions for the fans (with me signing) but hopefully I can win them over through the time there. “There’s an opportunity for myself now to put in some strong performances and help Sydney Thunder go on and do some special things this year.”

Root’s England team mate Jos Buttler, who scored his first test century against India this week, has also returned to the side for the competition. “It’s brilliant for the club to get two players of their quality to join us,” Thunder head coach Shane Bond said.

“Everybody knows Jos is one of the best T20 players in the world. They bring leadership to our team and you couldn’t ask for two better players.” Root, 27, is not expected to be available for the entire tournament, with England’s tour of Sri Lanka ending in late November before their tour of West Indies begins in January.

None of the IPL teams wanted him, will any of the Big Bash teams go for Roooooooooooooooot??

Typical, English players love playing in Australia. Let’s see if he tries to sharpen his T20 game in the PSL which is actually a month before the IPL

Don't want him in IPL ,what if he gets some form like the Aussies or Butler, happy with him hitting his 50s.

:)) Yeah but I think if Root was actually good enough in this format, they might have taken him . I don't think our IPL franchises give a damn about the Indian team. :P

Root sees this as an audition for a lucrative IPL contract rather than "sharpen his T20 game".

They don't, similar to how KABBADI League doesn't care abt Indian team and it blew up on our faces lol.

And yes he is good in this format, but the other than Morgan or Butler English players don't put much effort historically although Stokes and Moen are trying.

Middle order right hand batsmen who score at a brisk pace (without being explosive) are a dime a dozen in the Indian domestic scene, and they're all 22 years old. Why should an IPL franchise go out of their way to shell out the big bucks for Root, and waste a foreign player slot in the process? He's hardly a Gayle or Johnson.

Not a good outing for Joe Root. He finished with 93 runs at 15.50, a strike-rate of 114.81 and a top score of 26.

Not the best season for Root, don't think Thunder will be interested in signing him in future seasons!

Root is not a power hitter, he is an accumulator who can't accelerate at will. That role works in ODIs but not T20s. Every player is his own man in T20s, you have to be good slogger regardless of team balance.

Probably tired. Should have taken time off before the WI series.

He can either open or play no.3 at his best in t20 . Thunders made mistake by choosing him as middle order batsman.

Even in English t20 team his place is vulnerable imo.

IPL bidders know their stuff. Rightfully discarded this one dimensional, limited batsman.

He is a great player, but the ATG knock against South Africa in WT20 is increasingly looking like a fluke.

I think he needs to focus on Tests and ODIs only. England doesn’t need him in T20s, they have too many explosive players at their disposal.

Not everyone is Kohli.

OR Babar Azam.
