Kyle Mayers' 210* guides West Indies to a stunning 3-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the 1st Test

If Pakistan think they're in for an easy ride in the Caribbean this summer...

And Mayers most probably wouldn’t have been in the playing XI if Hetmyer, Bravo and Chase would have been on the tour. What a career boost for him with double century in alien conditions.

Brian Lara would be proud of that.

One of the finest ever Test innings on debut. Take a bow Kyle Mayers.

Just one of those freak Bangladesh results. Credit to the West Indies, but it must be a grim life being a Bangladesh supporter.

This Mayers guy has an FC average of 28, the same as his age.

Inspiration for Imran Butt and Shan Masood!

His top score in FC was 140 before this....how rubbish are Bangladesh if they just let some no name walk in on debut and play an ATG innings???

Kyle Mayers has become the first ever batsman to make a double hundred in the 4th innings of a Test match when on debut

Oh boy Pakistan better wake up, this could happen to us now!

Is sakib injured.. his absence has really made a difference here..

Just unbelievable. Kudos to Kyle myers and West Indian but as a Bangladeshi supporter I am utterly distraught. This is one of the biggest slips in our test history.

My dissapointment is immense. My day is ruined and I want to say I am ashamed to support this bunch of of folks who did not repay our faith

Yours sincerely

This is easily the worst performance in the 4th innings while defending in the history of test cricket ever, if you disagree, then you clearly haven't watched enough of test cricket ever.

This must surely rank as one of the most bizarre and inexplicable defeats in Bangladesh history. You just can't allow a depleted West Indies side to chase down 390 odd on the final day at home.

Part and parcel of the game man. As a supporter its always tough when your team loses but, ups and downs are what makes any sport interesting.

An incredible win for West Indies, the list of away victories since 2000 is thin but this ranks as the most extraordinary given it's a second string lineup.

Kyle Mayers with a knock for the ages. Comiserations to Bangladesh.

Incredible stuff from West Indies and in particular Kyle Mayers.

Every now and then West Indies produce an amazing performance.

End this obsession with left arm spin if you want to progress.
Start a pace obsession instead.

But how do you casually rock up and score 200 not out in the 4th innings on debut.
These Caribbean guys are so chill. No pressurem

I think BD overdid the spin side of the combination. Mustafizur was the only pacer and he struggled in the second innings.

Kyle Myers only avgs 28 in 1st class cricket...just checked. Is this good batting or just terrible bowling from BD?

Yes we would have won had Shakib been picked.

BUT

We still should have won this easily. The odds were in our favour we still lost. I just want the team to be held accountable.

Poor decision making cost us rather than anything. Not using reviews well, poor field placement. Myers was lucky for the first 100 balls he placed from there onwards he was just phenomenal

I haven't seen any ups.

Part and parcel of the game no doubt but from what I have experienced the only part and parcel is that we will keep losing. We will win one or two games here and there but we will win everything else. I can assure you, we would be losing to Afghanistan and Ireland more often than not.

Also no, you cannot relate to this. Therr are a few things Pakistan fans sufferered which we didn't.

But this, I don't think anyone has ever experienced this.

Congratulations to the West Indies team and to Kyle Mayer — great achievement!

Congratulations, West Indies.

Disappointing from Bangladesh. It was a home game. Pitch was assisting spinners. Day 5 pitch. Really poor from them.

I hope our fans will stop hyping up these mediocre upcoming youngsters.

I am not sure why Nazmul Hossain Shanto keeps on getting chance.

Why are we pointing fingers at the wrong direction. We lost the match because of our failure as a fielding unit. Poor captaincy, poor bowling, lack of variety. Why not pick that young guy rishad just for the sake of variety.

History was secured by a depleted West Indies side as they chased down a record 395 on the final day in Chattogram to secure a 1-0 lead against Bangladesh.

The star of the day was Kyle Mayers. The 28-year-old, playing his first Test, scored a monumental 210*, carrying on from his overnight 37, to script among the more famous West Indies chases in recent times.

The facts surrounding the result point to the magnitude of it: it was the fifth-highest successful run-chase in Test history, and the highest ever in Asia. West Indies achieved the feat with three wickets to spare.

For Bangladesh, it was a blow – their search for a first win in the ICC World Test Championship continues, and the likes of Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who scored a century and took two four-fors, and second-innings centurion captain Mominul Haque saw their efforts go in vain.

It was a stunning West Indies performance though. A lot of that had to do with the overnight partnership of Mayers and Nkrumah Bonner. The duo resumed from their overnight 110/3 and ensured they stayed together till the final session.

Their 216-run stand formed the bedrock of the innings. They got together when West Indies were reduced to 59/3. By the time the stand was broken, they had 292 on board, just a shade over 100 runs away from the target.

During the course of the innings both Bonner and Mayers brought up personal milestones – Mayers reached his maiden Test century, and Bonner, a fellow debutant, sored his first Test half-century. However, when the stand was broken – birthday boy Taijul Islam trapped Bonner in front – Bangladesh had their much-coveted opening.

A wicket brought another as Jermaine Blackwood fell to Nayeem Hasan, and Bangladesh had belief they could yet come away with full points. However, Joshua Da Silva ensured nothing of the sort would happen. Much like in the first innings, he batted solidly, providing Mayers with adequate support – Mayers got a move on too, tonking Mehidy Hasan for sixes, and they brought up the 100-run stand to all but ensure a West Indies victory.

There were still some jitters towards the end as Da Silva was cleaned up by Taijul before Kemar Roach became Mehidy’s eighth wicket of the match. However, Mayers fittingly scored the winning runs to seal his place in West Indies history.

Someone who has watched over 30 hours of this match.

I know this feeling from the 1st Test against NZ. I decided to stay awake (UK time) because the draw and even the win was on until the last session

One of the best test wins ever... Stunning performance indeed.

Watched the highlights.Kudos to Mayers but it seemed more like a case of bad bowling and catching

BD needs to improve fast

I have no idea why I typed that. I am still reeling from the loss. Pardon me

These losses happen. Shakib is a pretty big miss for you and I think you would have won with him. It's not a lack of talent but just not having the mental side of the game down pat that is costing you guys. I've seen it dor some time now. By the time lunch came round I could tell that windies would win it.

Weren't you the guy who wanted WI to give better competition? Well they not only competed but smashed BD bowlers into oblivion.

I don't think we are pointing fingers at the wrong direction.

Majority of the latest youngsters have been nothing but mediocre.

It feels like this is a skill issue and not a selection issue.

I feel Bangladesh should lose Test status.

They lose badly away generally. If they can't win at home, what's the point of Test status?

Didnt they win the most recent U19 WC ?

I was referring to the ODI series. Their test squad is closer to full strength

England lost a match to WI too at home. Just saying. The solution to the problem isn't losing test status, rather prompting us to play against weaker teams like Ireland afghanistan zimbabwe

CWI congratulates West Indies on magnificent win

ST JOHN’S, Antigua — Cricket West Indies (CWI) today congratulated the West Indies team on the record-breaking victory against Bangladesh in the first Test match at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.

Led by an amazing double century by Kyle Mayers on debut, West Indies made 395-7 to win by three wickets. He made 210 not out and shared a superb partnership of 216 with fellow debutant Nkrumah Bonner, who made 86

The superb batting performance was the second highest score in a successful run chase in West Indies Test history and the highest run chase in a Test match in Asia.

In a statement, CWI President Ricky Skerritt lauded team and their performance, which brought great joy to West Indies supporters around the world.

Skerritt said: “Congratulations to captain Kraigg Brathwaite and our entire squad for an exceptional display of composure and desire. Led by debutant Kyle Mayers, it was a fighting team performance overall. The people of our region should walk a little taller today and the challenges of COVID-19 should temporarily be overshadowed by this astonishing West Indies Test victory. The hard work will continue.”

The West Indies team that played in England was completely full-strength. Also, it was a pitch that was suitable for pace bowling (strength of West Indies).

England won 2-1 anyway.

All I am saying is, we shouldn't make excuses. This was an unbelievable and inexcusable loss.

Bangladesh did not use DRS well.they dropped a few catches too but all in all WI deserved the victory. The target was very big but WI paced their innings very well.

I always said to my son ( he was excited about our spin bowling) that our spin bowlers are average or below average, not world class. Only Shakib is good. still I didn't expect this loss. Horrible.

One of the greatest knocks ever!! I watched the last couple of hours. BD just let it slip. Mayers just played a once in a lifetime freakish innings. The 2nd biggest story of this game is Mehedi's performance with bat and ball. I've been watching that kid from U19 days and thought he was always special. This was a coming of age game for him. BD found Shakib's successor.
