What's new

Manchester United | 2021/22 Season

Sure, he was willing to go to City, if that was his only option. But once United came calling, he was never gonna choose City.

His agent had serious talks with City first. They werent willing to pay the fee, he then turned to Utd.

Utd fans need to accept this reality, Ronaldo was keen to join City. Reason is obvious City is more likely to win the Champions League and Prem.

You think you'll win the Prem now?

City weren't willing to fee. Their loss. Maybe they could have become a big club with the signing of Ronaldo.

And yes, City have a better chance of winning trophies but in football, there is something called romanticism. That is something fans of mercenaries teams like City and your team Chelsea will never understand.

Its all debt money.

Utd have no excuses not to win the Premier League now. If they fail, Ole should be sacked, whether he will is another matter.

Its MU money, what they generate from revenues, not sure why it ruffles your feathers.

So now your pridicting MU will win the EPL :)))

Seeing how wrong you always are, dont jinx it.

MU wernt really interested in Ronaldo, he tried to move here after RM, his agent lured them in by using City, once they showed an interest it was over for city.

Again not sure why its hurting you so bad.

Sure, I was only point this out. The Glazers have been hounded, they will continue to borrow to buy keeping the fans happy while they put money in their pockets.

Not true, City wanted him on a free. Whatever the case he was willing to go to City, otherwise his agent wouldnt have long talks with City.

Someone sounds terribly sore :)))

Unbelievable.

I thought he was going to City, as he badly wanted to leave Juventus, and United had initially refused to take him back.

Once they realised that the greatest player in their history is going to their city rivals, they came up with a last hour bid, and statements from Rio and Evra suggest that Ronaldo was actually just waiting for an official bid from United to reject City.

Sir Alex Ferguson also played a big part in this as he spoke with Ronaldo when United had refused to sign him.

The GOAT is back home.

By the time Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sat down for what can sometimes be a chaotic media Zoom call at 13:15 BST on Friday afternoon, the Manchester United manager already knew Cristiano Ronaldo would be returning to Old Trafford.

Despite widespread speculation Ronaldo was set to join Manchester City, United officials were reasonably confident on Thursday night that momentum around the five-time Ballon D'Or winner returning to the Premier League was shifting away from Etihad Stadium and four miles across Manchester to Old Trafford.

The final push came the following morning, when former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson got involved.

The bond between Ferguson and Ronaldo is strong. Ronaldo still referred to the Scot as 'The Boss' long after his exit for Real Madrid in 2009. Ferguson implored Ronaldo to return to Old Trafford, knowing he will be feted as a hero. The alternative would be to tarnish a reputation that, if anything, has grown even bigger as United struggled to recapture former glories since Ferguson's retirement in 2013.

Ferguson's words followed up encouraging messages from Ronaldo's former team-mates Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra. Another former team-mate and current United technical director Darren Fletcher was mentioned to BBC Sport as also being part of an orchestrated charm offensive, that also involved Ronaldo's Portugal team-mate Bruno Fernandes.

By the time Solskjaer spoke to the media, Juventus coach Max Allegri had already told the world Ronaldo was leaving the club. The deal, in effect, was sealed.

As is his way, Solskjaer did not want to give anything away until it was absolutely watertight. Three times he swerved questions about Ronaldo before the man from the Telegraph had one final go.

Why, he asked, if one of the greatest players in the world was available, would Manchester United not at least try to sign him?

Solskjaer peered into the camera and gave just enough away for those who already had an inkling for what was happening - and for some that was on Thursday - to be certain it would come true, even if the rest of the world did not grasp its true significance.

"I didn't think Cristiano would leave Juventus," said Solskjaer. "There has been speculation.

"We have always had a good communication. I know Bruno has been talking to him as well. He knows what we feel about him. If he was ever going to move away from Juventus, he knows we are here."

By that point, a formal offer of €15m, with an additional €8m in add-ons, was being presented to Juventus. Just over three hours later, United confirmed an agreement to re-sign Ronaldo had been reached.

United step out of the shadows

Along with Gareth Bale, Ronaldo was viewed as one of the stellar targets United wanted to ease them into the post-Ferguson era in 2013.

Rumours of an Old Trafford return have ebbed and flowed, usually around contract negotiations, down the years but it has never looked particularly likely the player who spent six years at United between 2003 and 2009, scoring 118 goals in 292 appearances, winning three Premier League titles and the Champions League, would eventually come back.

United kept tabs on Ronaldo's turbulent club situation at Juventus throughout the summer. Juve have been wrestling with major financial problems and are still at war with Uefa over the doomed Super League project that United, along with the other five English clubs, quickly abandoned.

The line of communication with the player's long-time agent Jorge Mendes remained open. But as rumours about Ronaldo potentially joining Paris St-Germain began to surface, as Solskjaer said, United remained in the background. They felt it was still more likely Ronaldo would see out the final year of his contract in Turin.

Their antenna was only properly raised when Manchester City got involved.

Depending on who you speak to, by Thursday night, City were either thinking of doing a deal or claiming it had already been done. Well-placed sources veer more towards the Blues being interested but not completely certain how to make a deal work, as it needed them to sell someone, which in this summer's transfer market has not proved to be straightforward.

It is only then United moved into gear and made their pitch.

While elite football clubs do not have to justify their transfer decisions, many choose to.

For United, Ronaldo's return is a reconnection with the club's glorious semi-recent past. If one club legend was tasked with a 'cultural reboot' when Solskjaer was appointed as Jose Mourinho's replacement, initially on a temporary basis, in December 2019, there could be no greater example of what United once was than Ronaldo.

In three seasons between 2006-07 and 2008-09, the Portuguese littered the club with moments of pure genius.

But this transfer is about the present.

United are not alone in thinking, even at 36, Ronaldo retains many of the attributes that have led to him being viewed, along with Lionel Messi, as one of the greatest players of all-time. Last season he eclipsed Romelu Lukaku as Italy's Golden Boot winner thanks to his 29 goals.

Ronaldo's legendary fitness and professionalism are seen as evidence of him fully deserving of the two-year contract he will receive from United - and will be confirmed when the transfer itself is completed at some point before Tuesday's 23:00 BST deadline.

United think Ronaldo fits with their stated aim of fusing together world class signings with talented youngsters. They still feel their squad is one of the youngest in the Premier League.

In addition, they see the deal - together with the signings of Rafael Varane and Jadon Sancho - as proof United are still capable of attracting the very best players; that outgoing executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward can complete the biggest transfers and that star names are happy to play for Solskjaer, mocked as a PE teacher by some cruel critics.

The Cavani question

In addition to the economic impact of the Covid pandemic, which has cost them £150m in non-recoverable income, United are also mindful of the ongoing effect coronavirus is continuing to have.

The club has first-hand experience of this already in the current campaign after goalkeeper Dean Henderson was badly affected after contracting it.

But it has the potential to impact the club in other ways too.

Amid the ongoing issue over player availability for next month's World Cup qualifiers, United striker Edinson Cavani has seemed to question the blanket Premier League decision to deny players the opportunity to represent their country if it involves them having to quarantine for 10 days on their return to England.

United have already made it clear they are not interested in selling Cavani or cancelling the contract Solskjaer persuaded the 34-year-old to sign in May.

However, Ronaldo's arrival does offer them some additional flexibility in how sympathetically they deal with a player for whom representing his country is of major importance.

It may not provide an answer to the thorny question of what number Ronaldo will wear - even if Cavani was willing to hand over his number seven shirt, Premier League rules prevent a mid-season swap except in the most extreme circumstances - but it may help relations with a player whose time in England was scarred by the three-match ban for a social media post deemed to be discriminatory by the Football Association.

The planned homecoming

It is anticipated Ronaldo will have his medical in Portugal before linking up with his country for two World Cup qualifiers, the last of which is in Azerbaijan on Tuesday, 7 September.

In theory, that should make him available for his second United debut, against Newcastle, the following Saturday in a game that has not been selected for live TV coverage but will almost certainly be the BBC Radio 5 Live commentary choice.

The last time Ronaldo played against Newcastle for Manchester United at Old Trafford, he scored a hat-trick in a 6-0 win, underlining the reason why, almost completely, fans reacted to news of his return with overwhelming joy.

The true success of the 36-year-old's return can only be measured by what happens on the pitch - but if any guide is taken from the response to the final outcome of a most amazing day, Manchester United's purchase of Cristiano Ronaldo is a sure-fire winner.

Donny van de Beek: Man Utd midfielder insists he trusts Ole Gunnar Solskjaer amid future speculation
Donny van de Beek has yet to show his quality on a consistent basis since moving to Manchester United in September 2020; the 24-year-old tells Rio Ferdinand's FIVE podcast about his relationship with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and what he considers his best position to be

Donny van de Beek has opened up on his relationship with Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as he addressed speculation about his future at Old Trafford.

Speaking to Rio Ferdinand's FIVE podcast, the 24-year-old insists he trusts Solskjaer, as he looks to kick on in his second season in England following his £39m deal from Ajax in September 2020.

He also addressed claims he might have departed United in the recent summer window, with the Dutchman revealing positive discussions with the club ended any prospect of a premature exit.

Van de Beek has scored just once in the Premier League since his arrival from Ajax in September 2020
"I speak with the manager about it and the club," Van de Beek told Ferdinand's FIVE podcast. "They were clear they wanted me to stay here. The manager was really positive about me and he said, 'I need you and I want to keep you here'.

"Of course, what I see here now in the beginning of the season is difficult because I didn't play one minute, but he said, 'What I see every day in training, I see a different Donny now'.

"I need to trust him. If he doesn't need me, I think he will let me go. I think he has plans with me."

Playing against the backdrop of a global pandemic and adjusting to a new country made the acclimatisation process for Van de Beek a challenge.

The midfielder has yet to deliver consistently at United, displaying flashes of the form and potential that he showed after coming through the youth system at Ajax.

However, he has started just four Premier League games since his arrival, and it has not always been entirely clear if Solskjaer knows what Van de Beek's best position is - something the player acknowledged.

"This is football and I think you can never promise a player if he will play - or not. You can train every day hard, but in the end you need game time to show your best shape. If you play once in a month or anything, you cannot show your best," Van de Beek added.

"I think I can do (play as a six) but, of course, I don't know what the manager thinks or what he expects from me. I've played in this role before with Ajax.

"That depends on how you play as a team. For how we play, I think the best position for me is a number six or eight."

England forward Jesse Lingard has rejected a contract offer from Manchester United.

It is understood Lingard has concerns about how often he is likely to play this season, especially since the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Lingard, who scored twice in Sunday's World Cup win against Andorra, impressed during a loan spell at West Ham last season.

The 28-year-old's current United deal runs out at the end of the season.

Lingard did have offers to move in the summer, with West Ham especially keen for him to return.

He has just four minutes of Premier League action under his belt so far this term, coming off the bench in the draw at Southampton last month.

However, it will become more apparent how much he is likely to be used by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over the next three weeks, during which time United open their Champions League and Carabao Cup campaigns, in addition to playing four league matches.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice on his Manchester United return as they moved top of the Premier League with victory against Newcastle.

It took Ronaldo 47 minutes to reopen his goalscoring account for United, 12 years after his last appearance for the club.

Ronaldo, 36, who re-signed for United from Juventus in August, tapped in from close range to give the hosts the lead in first-half added time.

He added his second just after the hour mark, driving a left-foot shot under Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie Woodman after Javier Manquillo had equalised for the visitors.

Bruno Fernandes extended the hosts lead with a thumping long-range effort that flew past Woodman into the top-left corner before Jesse Lingard rounded off the scoring with a superb finish into the other corner after an intricate move.

Ronaldo starts for Man Utd
Young Boys v Man Utd (17:56 BST)

Cristiano Ronaldo, who was part of the last Manchester United team to win the Champions League in 2008, starts in Switzerland.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer makes three changes from the starting XI at the weekend with Donny van de Beek, Fred and Victor Lindelof all returning.

Raphael Varane, Nemanja Matic and Mason Greenwood drop to the bench.

Winger Anthony Elanga, 19, played and scored against Wolves on the final day of last season and is also among the subs along with 21-year-old keeper Matej Kovar, who was on loan at League One Swindon in 2020-21.

They have have some great players at the club now no doubt about it, but the defensive issues continue to haunt them.

I have always felt that both full backs are great going forward but poor defensively.

I am wondering if they are over dependent on Ronaldo! They have spent heavy money on a defender and have McGuire the great as well.

Man Utd 0-1 West Ham: Manuel Lanzini winner knocks out lacklustre United

West Ham knocked out Manchester United in the third round of the Carabao Cup with Manuel Lanzini's early goal enough for a 1-0 victory.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were beaten semi-finalists in the last two editions and came into this match fresh from sealing a thrilling 2-1 Premier League win at the London Stadium when the sides met on Sunday.

But three days on, it was David Moyes' men celebrating as Lanzini secured West Ham a rare Old Trafford triumph and Carabao Cup progress as the hosts failed to turn 27 shots into a goal.

The Hammers had failed to win on their previous 17 trips to Old Trafford, with Carlos Tevez the last player to score a winner there back in May 2007.

This time, Argentine compatriot Lanzini did the damage, sweeping home after Ryan Fredericks roared past a rusty Alex Telles on a night when the sides made a combined 21 changes.

West Ham will now face Manchester City in the last-16.

Dean Henderson made his first appearance of the campaign having struggled with prolonged fatigue after contracting Covid-19 and Telles was another making his first start of the campaign.

The Man Utd left-back looked rusty on his return from an ankle injury and was breathing a sigh of relief after Jarrod Bowen missed the target following his poor attempted challenge.

West Ham debutant Alex Kral saw a close-range shot blocked by Eric Bailly as the Hammers continued brightly, with Moyes' men capitalising on out-of-sorts Telles in the ninth minute.

Fredericks' burst beyond the left-back and his deflected cutback from the byline was struck beyond Henderson by Lanzini in front of the Stretford End.

It appeared to act as a wake-up call for the hosts and Sunday's match-winning goalscorer Jesse Lingard was furious referee Jon Moss did not award a penalty.

The former West Ham loanee went down in the box under pressure from Mark Noble, who was being teased by home fans after David de Gea saved the substitute's late penalty on Sunday.

Jadon Sancho saw a shot blocked and Anthony Martial sent a deft touch bobbling wide after Juan Mata's cross-shot rattled the crossbar as the home side launched wave after wave of attack.

But, despite being under the cosh and forced to replace injured Fredericks with Vladimir Coufal, West Ham retained their lead heading into the break as Alphonse Areola denied Lingard before Telles and Martial failed with attempts.

Solskjaer's side returned from the break strongly and Mata delightfully clipped over for Sancho to hit an audacious volley from an acute angle off target, before Diogo Dalot rifled a low effort just wide.

Andriy Yarmolenko struck wide from 20 yards as West Ham threatened to extend their lead, with Solskjaer turning to substitute Mason Greenwood - a move that almost paid immediate dividends as he forced Areola into a smart stop.

The West Ham shot-stopper denied Lingard before Solskjaer introduced Anthony Elanga and Bruno Fernandes as the hosts attempted to turn the screw.

The latter bent wide from 25 yards and Areola blocked Martial as the match entered the final 10 minutes, with Man Utd leaving gaps at the back as they searched for a leveller.

Yarmolenko somehow hit the post having rounded Henderson in the 86th minute and two minutes later Noble was played in by Bowen, only for his first-time strike to be stopped by Henderson.

The Man Utd goalkeeper denied Bowen soon after but those missed chances did not prove costly as West Ham celebrated.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Aston Villa's winning goal should not have stood after Manchester United slumped to a second straight home defeat.

Kortney Hause had put Villa ahead with an 88th-minute header before United's Bruno Fernandes missed a stoppage-time penalty after Hause had handled.

Solskjaer claims the goal that earned Villa a first Old Trafford win for 12 years was offside.

"You can take it when it's a good goal against you," said the United boss.

"But that's offside. He's touched David [de Gea] as he heads the ball."

Solskjaer said there was no consistency in decisions and cited last week's game between Brighton and Leicester, when the Foxes had two efforts ruled out with Harvey Barnes in the eyeline of Seagulls goalkeeper Robert Sanchez in both instances.

"How that's a goal and Leicester have not got their goals," he added. "I just can't see the consistency."

United were left frustrated as they failed to score for a second straight game before Villarreal's Champions League visit on Wednesday, a repeat of the 2021 Europa League final which United lost on penalties.

"When you lose games it's a concern," Solskjaer said.

"I know they will fight for each other and fight for the shirt and we will be ready for that one."

Fernandes or Ronaldo - who will take United's next penalty?
On a bitterly frustrating day for United, they wasted a chance to salvage a point when Fernandes blazed his 93rd-minute spot-kick high over the bar in front of the Stretford End.

Since making his Red Devils debut on 1 February 2020, Fernandes has taken 23 penalties and scored 21 of them at club level.

In the same period, Ronaldo has scored 18 penalties from 22.

Bruno Fernandes missed from the penalty spot for only the second time in his 23 attempts for Manchester United in all competitions
Ronaldo, who failed to score for the first time since rejoining United, stood behind his fellow Portuguese when Fernandes picked up the ball and placed it on the spot.

"Bruno has been excellent and Cristiano is probably the one who has scored the most penalties in world football," added Solskjaer.

"We've got great takers and it's a missed opportunity for us to get a point."

Solskjaer was unhappy about Villa's players surrounding Fernandes before he took the penalty.

"Sometimes it just doesn't go your way. Bruno is such a good penalty taker and today you would have backed him with your mortgage I would guess.

"What I didn't like was the way they crowded the referee, the penalty spot and Bruno and tried to affect him.

"It clearly worked but that's not great to see."

'Solskjaer has got to win a trophy'

Not only do United need to return to winning ways, they need to demonstrate they are serious contenders for a trophy this season following an expensive summer in the transfer market.

Having suffered an early exit from the Carabao Cup, they need to get their Champions League campaign back on course against Villarreal after losing their opening group game against Young Boys.

United have lost three of their past four matches in all competitions and another defeat against Villarreal will increase the pressure on United - without a trophy since 2017 - and Solskjaer.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville told the BBC this week that Solskjaer "has to deliver" this season.

He said: "There's no doubt that Ronaldo's a make or break signing for Ole because with Ronaldo in the squad, he has to win.

"You can't have any excuses. You bring in one of the best players of all time to your club, you've got the Jadon Sancho signing, the Raphael Varane signing at centre back, you've got to deliver."

Solskjaer will be hoping for good news on the injury front as he prepares for Villarreal's visit, after defenders Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire both limped out of the Villa game and will have scans to assess their injuries.

Some days back Ole was saying Man Utd don't get a penalty since Klopp's comments of them getting to many. Today when they get one it's missed:broad! Now after two consecutive defeats we are told the Villa goal was offside!:13: Had Man Utd scored it would have been perfectly onside.

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire is facing a "few weeks" out with a calf injury, says boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Maguire, 28, will be absent for Wednesday's Champions League match against Villarreal and is likely to miss England's World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary in October.

The defender limped off in United's Premier League defeat by Aston Villa last Saturday.

"Harry is more or less definitely out. It doesn't look good," said Solskjaer.

"It's his calf. That might take a few weeks, so let's see how quickly he recovers. Of course he was hoping to play against Villarreal - he missed the last game we played against them [in the Europa League final in May]."

The severity of Maguire's injury means he is unlikely to be included when Gareth Southgate announces his Three Lions squad on Thursday.

A question. As a Liverpool fan, you love the fact that Ole is our manager and you want him to stay right?

Doesn't really bother me who the Man Utd manager is. With Ole having spent so much in the window it seems Ronaldo is still their go to man. The defence seems as leaky at the Titanic:afridi!

That is because Ole is a crap coach who relies on moments of individual brilliance from players like Ronaldo, Bruno, Pogba etc.

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford took part in full training on Friday for the first time since having shoulder surgery.

The 23-year-old England international has not played since coming on as a substitute in July's Euro 2020 final.

He had been troubled by the shoulder problem for months and had an operation at the start of August.

"Marcus trained fully for the first time today with contact," said United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

"There were a few tackles flying in on him but he seemed OK, which was nice to see."

Speaking at a news conference before Saturday's Premier League match against Everton at Old Trafford (12:30 BST), Solskjaer criticised the scheduling of matches.

United beat Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday night but will play again less than 72 hours later, while Manchester City and Liverpool, who both played in Europe on Tuesday, meet in the league on Sunday.

"We had no explanation, but it's TV of course," Solskjaer said. "There's no common sense at all. We had the same scenario last season when we were in Turkey and came back and played.

"Us and Chelsea both played on Wednesday and could have easily played on Sunday while City-Liverpool could have been on Saturday.

"Common sense might not be so common."

Another poor result today.

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Cristiano Ronaldo should have started Manchester United's game against Everton, saying his absence provided the Toffees with a boost as they claimed a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo began Saturday's game on the bench, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claiming his team needing refreshing after their "physically and emotionally" tiring win over Villarreal in the Champions League three days earlier.

Ronaldo was brought on during the second half against Everton - when United were winning 1-0 - but was unable to help them hold onto the victory.

United have now won just two of their last six matches and Ronaldo looked frustrated at full-time on Saturday, walking straight down the tunnel while muttering to himself.

Ferguson - who won 13 Premier League titles during his reign at United - was in attendance at Old Trafford on Saturday and was filmed after the game talking to UFC legend Khabib Nurmagomedov.

In a video posted on social media by the Russian, Ferguson is heard saying Everton were given a boost "when they saw Ronaldo wasn't playing."

After Nurmagomedov - who retired with a 29-0 record last year - points out Ronaldo came on in the second half, the Scot replied: "Yeah I know... but you should always start with your best players."

Manchester United are not commenting on the story.

Ronaldo has scored five goals in six games since returning to United from Juventus this summer.

He was first signed for the club by Ferguson when he was an 18-year-old at Sporting Lisbon in 2003, before being sold to Real Madrid for a then-world record fee six years later.

Ronaldo has said that Ferguson played a role in convincing him to make his dramatic return to Old Trafford this summer.

Gary Neville says Ronaldo's actions at Old Trafford serve only to increase pressure on Manchester United boss Solskjaer.

"Is Cristiano upset when he doesn't play? Yes. Is Cristiano upset when he doesn't score? Yes. Is Cristiano annoyed as hell when the team don't win? Of course. We know those things. He doesn't have to prove that.

"He walks off the pitch, muttering to himself, which throws questions up in the air. What is he saying? Who is he annoyed with? It can only come back to the manager.

"Cristiano is smart enough to know actions like that will bring real pressure on the manager - more than he is already under.

"It is what it is, but I think that is something that has to be managed in the next couple of months.

"Cristiano is not always going to score and he maybe can't play every game. But if he's going to walk off like that, it's going to put immense pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer."

Manchester United: Glazer family put another 9.5m shares up for sale

Manchester United's owners have put up another 9.5m shares, with a value of $186.86m (£137.12m), for sale.

United notified the New York Stock Exchange of the sale on Tuesday evening, in the names of club directors Kevin Glazer and Edward Glazer.

The statement makes it clear the club "will not receive any proceeds from the sale".

It comes five months after United's Premier League game against Liverpool was postponed due to fan protests.

That followed the collapse of the European Super League project which saw United co-chairman Joel Glazer heavily involved in the negotiations.

In March, Avram Glazer sold £70m worth of shares in the club.

The sale represents 8% of the family's total combined ownership, although they will still hold a combined 69% of the shares in United and sources say they remain committed to the club.

It is almost certain the shares will be sold at a price lower than the Stock Market value due to the sheer number being sold.

United co-chairman Joel Glazer has twice attended Fans Forums in the wake of the supporter unrest and pledged to make shares available to fans.

In September, he said implementing a share scheme was "rather complex", but added "we're jumping those hurdles" and hoped to bring the initiative to a conclusion "in the not-too-distant future".

Manchester United have confirmed defender Raphael Varane has been ruled out 'for a few weeks' due to an injury picked up on international duty.

Manchester United have defended their decision to fly the 100-mile journey to their Premier League game at Leicester.

United say they would not normally fly to the game but plans changed due to "circumstances". There were reports of traffic congestion on the M6.

Flying is a significant contributor to global warming and world leaders are meeting later this month in an attempt to avoid a climate catastrophe.

Manchester United defended its commitment to clean energy.

Climate experts and campaigners say we need to avoid or reduce flying because greenhouse gases, produced when fuel is burned, are "the root cause" of global warming. Scientists have warned that such warming could have a catastrophic effect on the planet.

Aviation actually only contributes about 3.5% of the world's global carbon emissions, according to Carbon Brief, but only a very small percentage of the world flies frequently, meaning those who do are disproportionately responsible for these emissions.

Domestic flights are the least energy-efficient way to travel, as shown by the graphic below. France has moved to ban all short-haul domestic flights.

3-2 down to Leicester City at the moment and it sounds like De Gea has kept them in it.

Paul Pogba says Manchester United need to "change something" after being beaten 4-2 by Leicester, their second defeat in three Premier League games.

United have taken one point out of a possible nine, dropping to fifth and losing ground in the title race.

There have also been several other unconvincing performances this season.

"We have been having these kind of games for a long time and haven't found the problem. We have conceded easy and stupid goals," Pogba told Sky Sports.

"If we want to win the title, these are the games we need to win, even if they are very hard.

"We know that the fans were going to push and put pressure on us and we need to be more mature, play with more experience and arrogance - in a good way - by taking the ball and playing our football.

"We need to find the key for this change because we deserved to lose. I don't know if it is the mindset of the players. We need to change something. We need to find the mentality and tactics to win. We have to look as individuals and as a team to fix this."

Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo believes the Old Trafford side need time to adapt after an inconsistent start to the season.

United are sixth in the Premier League and five points off leaders Chelsea after collecting just one point from their last three top-flight games.

They host Liverpool on Sunday, with their rivals second on 18 points.

"We are in a moment in my opinion that Manchester [United] do a few changes," said 36-year-old Ronaldo.

"They buy me, they buy [Raphael] Varane and [Jadon] Sancho."

Portugal international Ronaldo rejoined the club in the summer after a move from Juventus, while United signed defender Varane from Real Madrid and winger Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.

"The adaptation will take time, even the system of the game that we play, but I think step by step we have to put it in our mind that everything is possible," added Ronaldo, who was speaking to Sky Sports.

"Everyone should know their role. I know my role in the team, in the club - my role is to score goals, to help the team with my experience and knowhow to understand the game.

"If everyone is thinking like that, sacrifice for the team, I think we will be a better team."

Manchester United 'striving' to emulate Liverpool's recent success, says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
Ronaldo scored the winner for United after they came back from 2-0 down to beat Atalanta in a Champions League group game in midweek.

He has six goals in eight appearances for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team and, despite being questioned over his work-rate, Ronaldo says he will "close mouths and win things".

"Criticism is always part of the business," he added. "I'm not worried about that. And I see it as a good thing to be honest.

"If they worry about me or they speak about me, it's because they know my potential and value in football still."

Manchester United suffered one of their worst defeats in history after losing 5-0 to arch-rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday - but what are the stats behind their latest slump?

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville claimed the pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had cranked to "intolerable" levels as news of the humiliation reverberated around the globe.

United were 4-0 down by half-time and Paul Pogba was dismissed when the Norwegian's side were already 5-0 down and Mohamed Salah had sealed his hat-trick and entered double digits for league goals with just nine games played.

The result came almost a decade to the day since the shocking 6-1 defeat by Manchester City at Old Trafford in front of a similar 75,000-strong crowd, when United were also reduced to 10 men early in the second half.

The Red Devils slip into seventh on goal difference - locked level on 14 points with Everton, Leicester and Arsenal. Not quite the start many fans were expecting after a runners-up finish last term preceded a stellar summer transfer window.

Major trophies and perhaps even their first league title in nine years appeared to be drawing closer - but the numbers suggest United remain off the pace.

United have picked up 34 points from clashes with 'Big Six' opposition during Solskjaer's reign - nearly half the tally collected by title-tussling Liverpool and Manchester City during that period.

The contrast in application on the pitch between the United and Liverpool players was polarised on Sunday, which also raises eyebrows about the level of investment spent on signings.

Solskjaer has overseen a league-topping £312m net spend, while Klopp has actually made a £3.6m profit from transfer deals since the winter window of 2019.

United's lavish spending this summer on Jadon Sancho (£73m), Raphael Varane (£41m) and Cristiano Ronaldo (£19.7m) contrasts significantly with Liverpool's £36m outlay on Ibrahima Konate - a fee Liverpool balanced by selling Harry Wilson, Xherdan Shaqiri, Taiwo Awoniyi and others.

Running on borrowed time?
Critics have cited United's recent running metrics as cause for concern, with the club ranking 14th for distance covered in the Premier League this season.

However, fellow 'Big Six' rivals Tottenham and Chelsea also rank lower, and United also typically play a high line - which reduces the distance required to cover by playing in a compressed area of the pitch.

But matchday numbers shed greater light on the matter by revealing United have run 25km fewer than their opponents in the nine games so far.

Solskjaer's side have recorded lower distances in seven of those fixtures - while the two games when they outran opposition, against Wolves and Newcastle, were effectively equal in work-rate.

In term of the players, Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes cover the most distance among regular starters, but Jesse Lingard and Edinson Cavani also cover considerable distance - albeit from short bursts of game time, often as late substitutes.

The pressing issue?

Much has been made of United's lack of pressing this season and the numbers certainly appear damning, ranking bottom in the Premier League for tackles and duels and not far off rock bottom for interceptions, aerials and recoveries.

Digging down deeper to the players, Lingard emerges as the club's top player for pressing - but this is skewed by the fact the England winger has played only 55 league minutes this term.

Bruno Fernandes and Fred lead the way among the club's regular starters, while veteran forwards Cavani and Ronaldo rank at polar ends with Cavani typically pressing 36 times per 90, compared with Ronaldo's 13.

Defensive woes

Defensive issues have been the primary issue behind this recent slump, but the fact United won a league-high 31 points from losing positions last term suggests the attacking strengths have been propping defensive weaknesses for some time.

Interestingly, United are beginning to rank very poorly for points lost from winning positions, having ceded five already - which could be an indication that the tide is turning and the customary comebacks are waning, despite the dramatic Atalanta result last week.

Indeed, the failure to overturn results, and mistakes, are becoming more prominent. United have made a league-high seven errors leading to a shot against them - of which only one has been punished with a goal.

Speaking after the Liverpool defeat, Neville added: "Manchester United need to change. I believe Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is going to get the opportunity to change. But there is going to be pressure from every source."

To compound the Norwegian's woes, United now face a gruelling run of fixtures through to the festive period, which includes midweek Champions League showdowns with Atalanta and Villarreal and league clashes with Tottenham, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Getting sacked doesn't make one a bad manager, especially if it's a manager who got sacked by Chelsea.

It means that Man Utd are interested in a Chelsea reject.

Chelsea are an ambitious club who sack managers left right and centre. If Ole was managing Chelsea, he would have been sacked 2.5 years ago. And besides at this point, any manager is an upgrade over Ole.

So Man Utd are not ambitious by comparison!? Man Utd have sacked a good many too since Sir Alex left.

United are ambitious for top 4 only because they want the champions league money. If top 4 is in jeopardy, Ole will be gone. That's why Moyes, Van Gaal and Mourinho got the sack.

Chelsea have ambition to win silverware.

Mourinho and VG didnt sign for a top 4 spot, nor were they left dry, the glazers made them the biggest spenders, obviously not for a top 4 spot.

LVG got sacked 2 days after winning the FA cup, only because jose was available and the glazers wanted the CL and EPL.

If anyone thinks glazers are happy for not winning trophies and are not ambitious, then they are clueless, they just have a different way to go about it then chelsea do.

Even that seems far away at the moment.

Sacking Olie isn't the answer right now. He has got it horribly wrong recently and needs to improve. They are the same team that came second last season and almost won the Europa League. Nothing has changed but only a few certain individuals that have come in since that have possibly upset the apple cart.

If Olie does have to go I would go for Zidane, but again Man U are about long term success and longevity. We really want a manager who cares about the club in heart but is also very good. Not many about really if any who fit that description.

Looks like the Ronaldo coming home party is over LOL

Man U utterly humiliated at home vs their biggest rival LOL

Despite just returning from injury, summer signing Raphael Varane was forced off before half-time with a hamstring strain in Bergamo.

United have struggled without the France international defender this season, and Solskjaer says the early signs aren't good.

"First look at it, is he felt his hamstring. We have to look at him tomorrow. But he felt his hamstring as he ran tightening up. So he didn't want to risk anything. First assessment doesn't look good but we'll assess him again tomorrow and fingers crossed."

Manchester United's players need to "look in the mirror" because they are "not at the same level" as their Manchester City counterparts, says midfielder Bruno Fernandes.

The gulf in class was clear as City cruised to a comfortable 2-0 derby win at Old Trafford.

A fourth Premier League defeat in six games also increased pressure on boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his players.

"We have to speak less and do more," Fernandes told Sky Sports.

"I am saying the same stuff. We have to change because this has happened many, many times already. What we did was not enough."

Pep Guardiola's side controlled possession, seeing 68% of the ball, but they also covered more ground and carried out significantly more sprints than their opponents.

Something has to change at OId Trafford - but will Solskjaer be there to do it?
Match report: City outclass United in derby win
It continues a theme of United's players being found wanting against opposition that work hard in and out of possession.

"If we want to be at the same level as them we have to do more because they showed we are not at the same level," Fernandes added.

"Everyone has to look at themselves. You have to look in the mirror at what you are doing wrong. You cannot change the mentality of anyone else, you have to look at yourself and understand what you can do better."

A heavy loss at Leicester, coupled with successive Premier league defeats against two of the United's biggest historical rivals have intensified pressure on both Solskjaer and his underperforming players.

While Saturday's reverse to City was not on the scale of the humiliating result against Liverpool, United's last home victory was against Newcastle on 11 September.

"It's very disappointing. Last week it felt like we made a step forward, this is a big step backwards," Solskjaer said, referring to their 3-0 win at Tottenham.

"It is a way of losing we don't like. You want to see a better Man Utd than that. We have had a four-week period where we have been disappointing. We want to be on the front foot and we want to be aggressive. This was a big step back.

"Players are human beings. When you lose a game there is nothing better than winning a game. We have to come out against Watford like a proper, hurt animal. The international break has come at a good time for us."

Ex-Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Danny Murphy, speaking to Match of the Day: If Manchester United are going to compete with the big teams now, they need to change the manager.

Ex-England and Newcastle striker Alan Shearer talking to Match of the Day: If the players wanted him to continue in the job they would give more effort. It is both, no player should need to be told to make more effort but the system and the tactics come from the manager

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane, speaking to Sky Sports: "The difference in class, quality, decision making, everything. It was men against boys. United are so awful it's unbelievable. Phil Foden said it's a tough place to come. It's not. Ask Everton, ask Aston Villa, ask Liverpool. Ole has to take responsibility. I've defended him. They need to get more out of these players. Some of them just aren't up to playing for Manchester United."

Five-time Manchester United Premier League winner Peter Schmeichel, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "Something is clearly missing. The disappointment is the players don't have the ability to adjust to what they are up against."

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock, speaking to 5 Live: "I think Ole is their man, but five goals against Liverpool and two against Manchester City isn't good enough. I thought they were poor again. At the moment, they don't look like they know what they're doing."

Former Liverpool and Scotland midfielder Graeme Souness, speaking to Sky Sports: "It's a wake-up call for United. It was a shock to the system against Liverpool and this is another one. It's another reminder how far United are away from the team they want to be."

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba fears he could be ruled out until the New Year with a thigh injury sustained on France duty.
The World Cup winner suffered the injury while training with France on Monday ahead of their World Cup Qualifiers against Kazakhstan at home on Saturday and Finland away on November 16.

He will be assessed by the Manchester United medical staff to determine the severity of the injury.

Man U look doomed, and as much as Olie is a nice guy he should resign now but doesn’t look like it will happen.

We heard the same thing at the same time last year and ended up second in the table.

and even though its been pretty bad with major issues to sort out, we arnt far behind either, 5 points behind LP and 6 behind City despite giving them 3 points each.

Also you cant ask a manager to resign when there is no one to replace him, If ole goes Carrick comes in as the next manager, till someone becomes available.

LONDON - Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers has dismissed speculation linking him with Manchester United as pressure mounts on Old Trafford boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Rodgers is believed to be one of the leading contenders to replace Solskjaer if the under-fire Norwegian gets the sack.

United travel to Watford on Saturday with Solskjaer desperate for a victory after his side's lacklustre defeat against Manchester City before the international break.

That loss came hot on the heels of a humiliating 5-0 home thrashing at the hands of bitter rivals Liverpool, leaving Solskjaer fighting to save his job.

Rodgers, who led Leicester to FA Cup glory last season, was asked whether he would be interested in taking over at United during his press conference on Thursday ahead of Leicester's clash with Chelsea this weekend.

"There's two things. Firstly it is really disrespectful to ask the question when you have a manager in place, a good manager and a good man, who is working hard at the club," Rodgers said.

"Secondly I can't really comment on it, because it is not something that is real.

"I am here as the Leicester City manager, proud to be here, privileged to be here and fully committed to the players, the club, the ownership.

"That's about it, all the other noise around that is something we can't control."

It is not the first time Rodgers has been the subject of speculation over other jobs during his spell at the King Power Stadium, having been linked to Arsenal, Tottenham and Newcastle in recent years.

While the gossip does not bother him, he says it can have a destabilising effect.

"It doesn't frustrate me because my focus is always looking for the next game. The only club I am thinking about is Chelsea and getting ready for that," Rodgers said.

"It is frustrating for our supporters and also my players, if anyone is to read anything that is out there then that can destabilise.

"It is something that is the modern game, lots of speculation and gossip, it's all part of the modern game but it's not something I have any focus on."

Man Utd: David de Gea calls 4-1 loss to Watford 'embarrassing' & 'another nightmare'

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea described his side's 4-1 loss against Watford as "embarrassing" and "another nightmare".

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is under pressure after his side fell to seventh in the Premier League, amid a run of one league win in seven games.

Captain Harry Maguire was sent off at Vicarage Road and the Hornets also had a penalty saved.

"It was embarrassing, the way we played today," De Gea told BBC Sport.

"The first half was very poor - it's not acceptable for this club and the level of players that we have. It's another nightmare. There's been some difficulties but I don't really know what to say.

"I have been in difficult moments with this club but we are in a difficult situation - we don't know what to do with the ball, we are conceding a lot of goals. It's a horrible moment.

"It's easy to say the manager and staff but the ones who are on the pitch are the players and they're the ones who have to score goals and fight on the pitch. We need to look at ourselves one by one and give more for the club and the fans. It's difficult to say why there was a performance like this - I don't know what to say.

"It's hard to be in the dressing room now - we are sad, we are angry. Personally I'm hurt - it's a very difficult moment for the whole club."

Manchester United have appointed Ralf Rangnick as their interim manager until the end of the season, subject to work visa requirements.

The 63-year-old takes over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was sacked on 21 November following a defeat by Watford.

Rangnick has left his role as head of sports and development at Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow to take up the job.

"I am excited to be joining Manchester United and focused on making this a successful season," said Rangnick.

Following the end of this season, Rangnick will stay on at Old Trafford for an additional two years in a consultancy role.

His first game in charge of United, who are eighth in the Premier League, could be against Arsenal on Thursday if his work permit application is received in time.

If not, temporary manager Michael Carrick will remain in charge of the side.

"The squad is full of talent and has a great balance of youth and experience," added Rangnick.

"All my efforts for the next six months will be on helping these players fulfil their potential, both individually and, most importantly, as a team.

"Beyond that, I look forward to supporting the club's longer-term goals on a consultancy basis."

Rangnick has built an impressive coaching reputation during his time in Germany, with both Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel speaking highly about their compatriot.

He set Ulm on course to promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time before spells in charge of Stuttgart, Hannover, Hoffenheim, Schalke and RB Leipzig.

He won the German Cup with Schalke in 2011 and took RB Leipzig to the final in 2019.

During the 2010-11 season, he led Schalke to the semi-finals of the Champions League, where they lost 6-1 on aggregate to United, who were then beaten by Barcelona in the final.

"Ralf is one of the most respected coaches and innovators in European football," said United's football director John Murtough.

"He was our number one candidate for interim manager, reflecting the invaluable leadership and technical skills he will bring from almost four decades of experience in management and coaching.

"Everyone at the club is looking forward to working with him during the season ahead, and then for a further two years in his advisory role."

Carrick has been in charge for two games since Solskjaer's departure and has overseen a win over Villarreal that ensured United would finish top of their Champions League group.

He was also in the dugout for the 1-1 draw with Premier League leaders Chelsea on Sunday.

Carrick, along with all the current coaching team, will remain at the club, while Rangnick will bring a limited number of his own staff.

Caretaker Manchester United manager Michael Carrick says he is still to speak to Ralf Rangnick even though the German is expected to be at Old Trafford for Thursday night's Premier League encounter with Arsenal.

Rangnick was confirmed as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's interim replacement on Monday.

However, he is yet to get a work visa, so Carrick has been left in charge after overseeing the Champions League victory over Villarreal and Sunday's Premier League draw at Chelsea.

While Rangnick is in England - and Antonio Conte observed training at Tottenham when he was waiting for his visa to be confirmed after replacing Nuno Espirito Santo last month - Carrick says the pair are yet to speak.

"Because of the process and the work permit, we haven't been able to," said Carrick.

"We will just carry on as we have done. It has worked well for the last two games. Hopefully it does tomorrow."

Although he had no previous experience of management, Carrick has not been scared to make big decisions.

He described leaving Cristiano Ronaldo out of his starting line-up at Stamford Bridge as 'not a major decision', although it is anticipated the Portugal superstar will return against the Gunners.

It is also fairly certain midfielder Fred will be retained.

While many supporters have questioned the Brazilian, Carrick sees enormous ability in a player who occupies the same position he did in his own playing days.

"It gets overlooked that he is first choice for a good Brazil team," said Carrick.

"One of the biggest things people don't see is his desire to be a team player. He puts himself out. He twisted his ankle in the first-half against Villarreal. I have seen a lot of players come off with an injury like that, but he came out even though it was stiff and swollen.

"He got through the game and no way he was going to miss the next one. That mentality is infectious. I am all for that.

"He brings an awful lot to the team. I like him an awful lot."

The work permit thing is a bit odd. Seems to be taking a while.

<b>BBC — Ralf Rangnick: Man Utd manager does not rule out staying on as boss after initial six months.</b>

Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick has not ruled out staying on as manager beyond his initial six months in charge.

Rangnick has succeeded Ole Gunnar Solskjaer until the end of the season before moving into a two-year consultancy role at the club.

"If everything goes well I might make the same recommendation that I did at RB Leipzig twice - that it might be a good idea to keep working with me for one year - but it is all hypothetical," said the 63-year-old German.

Rangnick was at Old Trafford on Thursday to watch United beat Arsenal 3-2 in the Premier League and his first game in charge will be at home against Crystal Palace on Sunday at 14:00 GMT.

"The people with whom I have spoken have been very clear we are speaking of a six-month role as manager," he said.

"We have never spoken about what will happen in the summer.

"Right now, I'm fully aware that they might be looking for a new manager. If they will then speak with me about that, we will see.

"For me, now it is about winning the next games and this is the major focus."

<b>What about Ronaldo?</b>

Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in the win over Arsenal but there have been questions over whether the 36-year-old will fit in under Rangnick's pressing style of play.

"You always have to adapt your idea of football to the players you have available, not vice versa," said Rangnick.

"Seeing Cristiano in the second half at the age of 36, amazing - top professional. At his age, I have never seen a player who is still that physically fit and he is still a player who can easily make the difference.

"It's about how we can develop the whole team, it's not only about Cristiano. We play in the most competitive league in the world so we need all the players on board. What I saw from Cristiano, he is more than willing to do that."

Rangnick takes over with United seventh in the Premier League, 12 points behind leaders Chelsea, and through to the Champions League last 16 as Group F winners.

He added: "The challenge is to bring more balance into the team. Even [against Arsenal] we needed three goals to win the game. It's almost two goals on average conceded per game and this is too much.

"The game was exciting for the fans but as the coach they are not the games you need every day."

'We haven't spoken about new players'

Solskjaer had been in charge at United since December 2018 but was sacked on 21 November, having won only one of his final seven league matches. He failed to win a trophy during his tenure.

Rangnick said he spoke to the Norwegian for 90 minutes last weekend, while he also met with caretaker manager Michael Carrick to try to convince him to stay on.

Carrick took over after Solskjaer's dismissal and was in charge for a win over Villarreal, draw at Chelsea and the victory against Arsenal before announcing he was leaving the club.

"I had a private conversation with him for more than an hour. I tried to persuade him to stay on board. In the end, I had to accept his decision," said Rangnick.

"I am more than happy to work with the current coaching staff because I need their expertise on the current squad.

"I will try to find a few people who can join us in the next one or two weeks but, because of Brexit regulations, it is not that easy. Many of my former colleagues are in long-term contracts with big clubs so are not available right now."

Rangnick has left his role as head of sports and development at Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow to take up the job.

He has built an impressive coaching reputation during his time in Germany, with both Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel speaking highly about their compatriot.

He set Ulm on course to promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time before spells in charge of Stuttgart, Hannover, Hoffenheim, Schalke and RB Leipzig.

He won the German Cup with Schalke in 2011 and took RB Leipzig to the final in 2019.

During the 2010-11 season, he led Schalke to the semi-finals of the Champions League, where they lost 6-1 on aggregate to United.

On his philosophy, he said: "I think to gain control on games in the future, it has to do with playing proactively.

"It is about helping the team play together. It is about togetherness, team spirit - the two halves [on Thursday] were completely different and having these unique fans behind us will help us.

"It is not easy, I cannot do it in a few training sessions. It's about control - this is the major target."

Rangnick will meet the United players on Friday, when those who did not play against Arsenal will train, before all the squad have a training session on Saturday prior to the Palace game.

He has already been linked with bringing in players during the January transfer window but said that was not his main focus at the moment.

"We haven't spoken about new players," he said.

"Now is the time to get to know the current squad in detail. The squad is definitely not too small. There is enough players.

"Maybe after Christmas there will be a time to speak about possible transfers in the winter. In my experience, it is not the time for sustainable transfers."

Ralf Rangnick said his Manchester United side performed "better than expected" as he began his reign as interim manager with a narrow victory over Crystal Palace.

A more energetic United display looked like going unrewarded against a dogged Crystal Palace outfit until midfielder Fred struck first-time from Mason Greenwood's lay-off to send a superb 20-yard effort curling over Vicente Guaita and into the top corner for the winner.

It was only Fred's second goal of the season - and it was the first time since the middle of September that United have recorded back-to-back league wins.

Until the Brazilian's effort, Rangnick's side created numerous decent chances, without really looking as though they were going to score and Guaita would probably have saved an Alex Telles free-kick that skimmed the bar had it been on target.

"I am very happy with the way the team performed, especially the first half hour, with the pressing, it was exceptional," Rangnick told BBC Match of the Day. "The only thing missing was the 1-0 or 2-0.

"The way we defended, we had control of the whole game.

"The clean sheet was the most important part. These are the things we must improve. We need to keep clean sheets. With just the one training session, I was really impressed. We did much better than expected.

"We always tried to be on the front foot. We were never not apart from maybe the last five minutes. At all other times we were trying to keep them away from our goal."

Palace, who were looking to win for a third successive season at Old Trafford, came close to taking the lead themselves when Jordan Ayew turned James Tomkins header across the face of goal and narrowly wide of the far post.

The victory meant that Rangnick emulated three of United's other four new managers since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 by winning his first match at the helm, with Louis van Gaal the only man to fail.

Fred was one of the major focuses for criticism during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's reign as manager, which ended last month.

As Michael Carrick pointed out during his three-match spell as United's caretaker manager, the midfielder is a mainstay of a Brazil team that dominated World Cup qualification in South America.

Yet he has never given any indication, through either goalscoring or chance creation, that he is worthy of the £47m United paid for him.

He is industrious, though. And, judging by his little dance after the celebrations of his goal broke up, he is not without personality, which may be helpful to Rangnick over the coming months.

The German has not had a full training session with his players yet but there was certainly an intensity about United's early pressing, with Cristiano Ronaldo among those doing it on a couple of occasions.

It did harry Palace into a couple of mistakes - but then, as happened so many times under Solskjaer, the fire went out of the hosts and they started to rely more on crosses and individual moments to cause the visitors problems.

Marc Guehi managed to block a Ronaldo volley at close-range after the Portuguese had beaten the Palace offside trap and Tomkins headed a curling Fred shot away from danger.

Probably the hosts' best opportunity in the opening period fell to Bruno Fernandes, who didn't hit his shot cleanly but still forced a low full-length save out of Guaita after Ronaldo had set up the chance with an elaborate header.

United did not reach the same heights after the interval, although the introductions of Greenwood and Anthony Elanga at least kept them pushing forward until the decisive moment came.

"I had to ask my assistant coach if that was Fred's right foot," added Rangnick. "I thought he could only shoot with his left. I'm happy for him.

"It's always easier to build on things after you're successful. We must produce further clean sheets and get better at creating chances for our attack. Overall, I was very pleased with the way we played today."

Another defeat for Palace

Manchester United 1-0 Crystal Palace: Patrick Vieira 'disappointed' with result
Palace have now lost three Premier League games in a row for the first time under Patrick Vieira's management.

The Eagles are six points above the bottom three and clearly need to halt the slide before they end up in trouble.

Having achieved their previous victories in this stadium with 29% and 24% possession respectively, Palace actually did far better in this contest, with 39%.

But, other than Ayew's effort, an early Wilfried Zaha shot easily saved by David de Gea and a flurry of late set-pieces sent into the United box that were all cleared, Palace lacked conviction.

Zaha was a particular disappointment as he hardly got into the game, especially in the second-half when Cheikhou Kouyate and Conor Gallagher carried a greater threat.

"I'm disappointed - we gave them a tough game, we made it really difficult for them," manager Patrick Vieira told Match of the Day.

"At the end, conceding the goal, we are so disappointed. And we had the chance before [for Ayew], it is frustrating.

"When you get opportunities, you have to take them, and when you don't take them your are left vulnerable. I'm am disappointed for Jordan as he had a fantastic game. That is football.

"We need to change our mindset. How can we be more ruthless when we're in the opposition's box? That's something we have to work on."

After the start they have had, the best that United can realistically aim for is the last Champions League place. There will be fierce competition from West Ham and Arsenal this year also…potentially Tottenham too. Rangnick might be able to deliver 4th though, he’s admittedly a very competent manager.

Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick says it is "absolutely logical" to have an "an expert for the brain" among his coaching staff after appointing a sports psychologist.

Sascha Lense is one of two backroom appointments Rangnick intends to make once United can get the required visas.

Lense, 46, is a former second division player in Germany and worked with Rangnick at Schalke and RB Leipzig.

"For me it is absolutely logical," said Rangnick.

"This is not about putting them on the red sofa and holding hands with players.

"If you have special coaches for goalkeeping, physical education, strikers, fitness, you should also have an expert for the brain."

Former New York Red Bulls and FC Toronto manager Chris Armas will also join Rangnick's coaching team but it is Lense's appointment that has attracted most interest.

"In the last couple of years, in Germany, most clubs have employed a sports psychologist," said Rangnick.

"I had Hans-Dieter Hermann, the current sports psychologist of the German national team, with me [at Ulm] in 1998. We were probably the first club in Germany to do that.

"It is about helping to show the players how the brain should assist the body, not work against it. Whenever we speak about football, we know that the major part is in the brain - what do you think? How do you analyse the situation?

"The players, the coaching staff, everybody in our team should think in the right way."

It is clear Rangnick will expect the coaching staff he has inherited at United to be open to Lense's work, which will be on the training pitch and not hidden away from view.

"Sascha is hands on," Rangnick said. "He doesn't work in theory. He is part of training sessions.

"Having worked with him at Leipzig I know we can benefit a lot from him a lot. The coaches have to allow that. At the top level, it is vital you should have the best possible person on this job."

Anthony Martial: Man Utd forward wishes to leave club in January transfer window, says agent

Anthony Martial wishes to leave Manchester United in the January transfer window, his agent has told Sky Sports News.

The France forward is not satisfied with the amount of playing time he has had this season and wishes to consider options elsewhere when the window reopens next month.

His representative Philippe Lamboley, executive director of USFA Management, told Sky Sports News: "Anthony wishes to leave the club in January.

"He just needs to play. He doesn't want to stay in January and I will speak to the club soon."

Martial, 26, has started only twice in the Premier League this season and has made five more appearances from the bench.

Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty earned Manchester United a narrow victory over Norwich to maintain Ralf Rangnick's unbeaten start as interim manager.

Ronaldo sent Tim Krul the wrong way on 75 minutes after the Portuguese had been hauled down by Max Aarons on the edge of the six-yard box.

The Red Devils had offered little attacking threat before then, though Alex Telles hit the bar with a deflected free-kick during the first half.

They also had David de Gea to thank for two fine stops to deny Teemu Pukki and Ozan Kabak as Norwich put in a spirited display.

The win moves Manchester United above Arsenal and Tottenham into fifth place. Norwich stay bottom on goal difference, three points from safety.

Norwich in a sense were the better team last night. They kept the ball well and played some decent stuff. It’s just that no accuracy or sting was at all evident in the final third, unfortunately for them.

A real grind of a result for United there. Had to rely on Ronaldo’s drawing of fouls and penalty taking ability to snatch a result.

Ragnicks hands are tied. He can only work with what he has. With his high press intentions you need the personnel, Maguire, lindilof are liabilities in a high line , mctominy to slow in transition, and the wing backs have to be top draw, we lack in crucial departments for Ragnicks tactics to flourish.

Two 1-0 wins out of two and climbing the table, about as a solid a start as Man Utd could have asked for from Rangnick.

Manchester United have recorded a number of positive Covid tests among players and staff following their 1-0 win at Norwich on Saturday.

The club has reported the cases to the Premier League and their match at Brentford on Tuesday is now in some doubt.

It is understood that all players tested negative before the Norwich game.

But a number of players tested positive before training on Sunday morning.

Those individuals were then sent home and training was adjusted to individual and non-contact sessions.

Brentford vs Man Utd: Tuesday's Premier League match postponed after visitors report Covid cases

Manchester United's Premier League fixture away to Brentford on Tuesday night has been postponed due to a Covid outbreak among the visitors' squad.

United made a request to the Premier League to postpone the fixture after being forced to close first-team operations at their Carrington training complex on Monday afternoon.

The club said they recorded a "small number" of positive Covid cases among first-team players and staff who took lateral flow tests on Sunday, a day after they beat Norwich 1-0 at Carrow Road.

Those positive results were confirmed after PCR tests were undertaken on Monday, and those who have the virus are currently isolating.

A statement from United on Monday night read: "Given cancellation of training and disruption to the squad, and with the health of players and staff the priority, the club requested the match to be rearranged.

"The Premier League board took the decision to postpone based on guidance from medical advisors.

"Manchester United regrets the inconvenience caused to Brentford FC and to the fans of both clubs by Covid-19."

United say the outbreak among their first team requires "ongoing surveillance", while the match against Brentford will be rescheduled in "due course."

A statement from Brentford added: "Following medical guidance, the Premier League board have postponed Tuesday night's match against Manchester United due to the exceptional circumstances of an ongoing COVID-19 outbreak within the Manchester United squad.

"We appreciate that there will be many fans who will be inconvenienced with the fixture postponement and we apologise for the disruption, which was out of our control, but we respect the Premier League's decision and acknowledge that the health and safety of both clubs' players and staff must always come first.

"We wish everyone affected a speedy recovery and look forward to hosting Manchester United at the Brentford Community Stadium in the New Year.

"The rearranged match details will be confirmed and communicated in due course. All match tickets will remain valid for the rearranged fixture."

Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial appear likely to be the first two players cast aside by Manchester United in January but Martial's £30m price tag is putting some suitors off.

At least it seems like he has practiced driving forward in his car - something he lacks on the pitch.

Different manager but I thought they were very poor against Newcastle United tonight and lucky to get a point.

So much whining and complaining to the ref and at each other from the Man Utd players.

In 8th place in the table.

I didn't expect Ronaldo to be as prolific as he has been in the past but what has happened to Fernandes? Seems to have fallen off a cliff.

In 8th place in the table.

Listened to Gary Neville's assessment of the game and he pretty much said the same thing. A lot of whingeing going on amongst the Man Utd players and doesn't think there is unity in the dressing room with the players not ready to fight for each other.

That was extremely poor from United, particularly in the first half where they were shockingly bad. Looking at the game as a whole, they were essentially outplayed by the bottom side in the league who have barely won a game all season. Newcastle should really have won that.

Sevilla have made an offer to Manchester United to sign Anthony Martial on loan.

Performance has dropped since Ronaldo joined.

And what was that formation vs Newcastle? So called ‘genius’ Ragnik at the wheel.

Yes I think the hierarchy at United has been disrupted as Bruno was the talisman before the arrival of Ronaldo who seems to have taken over penalty duties.

Interim boss Ralf Rangnick says disruptions caused by Covid-19 have impacted his progress since taking over at Manchester United.

The German, 63, is unbeaten in four games since replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the end of November.

But he says the Covid outbreak that led to the closure of the club's Carrington training base and the postponement of two games has complicated his work.

"Of course not," Rangnick said when asked if he had achieved his targets.

"Every coach, every ambitious coach - and there's no difference between other coaches and myself in that area - wants to take faster steps and larger steps forward.

"But in order to do that, you need to be able to train."

After beating Crystal Palace and Norwich either side of a Champions League draw with Young Boys in Rangnick's first three matches, games at Brentford and at home to Brighton were postponed because of a number of Covid cases at United.

They returned to action at Newcastle on Monday, with Rangnick admitting that he "did not like the performance at all" as his side escaped St James' Park with a 1-1 draw.

"The last three days, we were almost back to full strength with regard to the size of the squad, but we couldn't do that much in training," he added before Thursday's home match against Burnley.

"On the other hand, in those two-three training sessions, the team looked good and therefore in Monday's game it was really a bit of a negative surprise, the way that we played with regard to game speed, game tempo and physicality."
