Johnny Bairstow is currently the vice captain, but knowing English players and their sudden rise and dip in form it doenst necessarily express the argument that Bairstow is certainly the next candidate to take over if Root decides he would rather just bat instead of being skip.

Moeen Ali has emerged as probably a more valuable asset to the English team than Ben Stokes at the moment. He is fast emerging with confidence and class. Very much respected by the board, fans and team.

What do you guys think? Can brother Moeen become the first British Asian, devout Muslim Test captain of England?

Brother Moeen Ali is 4 years older than the current England captain. I don't think he will be an option. And Root's just had his first series as captain so I don't think he is going out anytime soon.

By the time Brother Joe resigns, I don't think Brother Moe will be a viable option.

None of them.

Root will be in th role for five years before the job makes him blow up with stress and mental exhaustion. After that it might be time for young Hameed, who will be 25.

Haseeb Hameed will be the next captain for England if Root can see out atleast 5 years.

Stokes is the current vice captain. I doubt any of these 3 will ever be a regular England captain whilst j doubt Moeen or Bairstow will ever actually even get a stand in role.

HitWicket maybe in another format they could have a chance, Mo also lead the U19 England team during the World Cup and has a bit of experience at Worcestershire although I don't think it was anything more then a temporary stint? can't remember

Even in limited overs what are the chances of none of Morgan, Buttler, Root and Stokes playing in a game.

A lot can happen but beyond stand in roles am sure the said names would be considered / interviewed for a long term position if a vacancy arised.

Long term they're clearly pretty set on Root for tests and Buttler for limited overs, I doubt any of these 3 would have enough cricket left in them to be considered for a captaincy role by the time these 2 finish up unless one of their careers finish unexpectedly early for some reason.

Root is young enough that the next English Captain probably isn't in the team.

Moeen should captain the T20 side at some point for the cultural significance and positive PR alone. Not a realistic option for tests though and it's for the best. He's overburdened as it is.

Stokes is the vice captain. Moen isn't a leader for me. Wouldn't be against giving Bairstow or Stokes a chance.

But think the next England captain isn't in the team.

I think Root will resign after a couple of years or a couple of consecutive series losses. He doesn't look like the type to be able to handle a lot of pressure and disappointment.

Stokes, who is mentally stronger and more of a leader, will then take over.

Ben Stokes is the obvious choice but I can't see Root stepping down as captain any time soon. The guy is an ATG in the making ; will probably be captain up until his retirement. Moeen Ali is like 4 years older than Root as well and Bairstow is also older than Root and Stokes is only a little bit younger. Stokes is the VC as well so if Root was to stand down then he'd be the obvious choice as he's the youngest out of him, Bairstow and Moeen Ali but realistically they'll all retire at the same age. I think the next long term captain could be someone like Haseeb Hameed

If I had to choose, i'd go with ALI. He is more of a Calm and cool headed character. Thinks before acting. Stokes on the other hand is a man baby. Will make a storm out of the smallest things which is what you DO NOT WANT in a captain. Bairstow would be 2nd on my list.
