What's new

Multan Sultans [244/6] qualify for play-offs with record-breaking win over Peshawar Zalmi [242/6]

Babar, Rizwan, Saim, Haris, Shadab.

How about that for a top 5 in T20Is.

Consistent runs at the top, one of Babar and Rizwan to attack, followed by 3 big hitters.

No need to play the liability Shan. He offers nothing.

I’d stick babar and rizwan at 10 and 11

Seems like once Rizwan and Shan got out, Zalmi had to find an equaliser and they’ve done it. They took Babar off the field and got someone else to captain. Genius

There you go Khushdil playing his own merry little cricket match

Oh my, biggest winning chase in PSL history under threat.

What is Khushdil doing? So predictable. No improvement to his game

Sixxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Poor poor game reading by PZ

Why did you try to get Shan out????

This guy was given a full year whilst Imad and Azam Khan not good enough for Pakistan!

Rossouw still out there, damage already done, too little too late.

Don't think the skipper is enjoying this! Or is he :))

Quite embarrassing that in order to chase a 220+ target, all the reliance is on the overseas players. Munro, Hales, Guptill, Rossouw, Pollard, Miller, David, Roy.

Khushdil, Asif, Shan, are just useless.

If I were Peshawar, I would crucify the two guys who got Rizwan and Shan out!

Whoever finalised Peshawar Zalmi bowling draft has a lot to answer. Surely there are better bowlers than these in Pakistan alone who are not playing the PSL.

So do Babar haters still blame Babar for this loss? He played exactly like you wanted him to play and yet again, 240 was not enough.

LQ bowling is miles ahead of any team in this PSL. They can defend 130 too. If LQ batting doesn't have a horrible day, i don't see any team challenging them for the title.

Whoever finalised Peshawar Zalmi bowling attack draft has a lot to answer for. In Pakistan alone there are many more deserving bowlers who are not playing the PSL.

A 2nd record breaking PSL chase in 3 days, and both against Zalmi...

Anwar ali u must be the most unfortunate cricketer ever. khushdil and Asif have played more than you for Pak side

Anwar Ali compensating for his bowling

Usama Mir can bat
Those were two ridiculously good shots in the end

Tom Kohler-Cadmore | Acting captain for Peshawar: You can say that. The batters have played beautifully the last couple of games, Jason with an unbelievable innings and tonight Rilee the same. When the batters play like that, you have to take your hat off. The par score is 200 here, we just did not deal with the pressure tonight. You know you're going to go for boundaries but you have to limit those to one an over instead of two or three. There's multiple places you can look at, as a team we did not execute. You can do everything different slightly and the way Rilee came out, he put us under pressure from ball one and you need a plan when players are batting that well. As long as you are in the qualification race anything can happen, then you have three games to win the trophy.

Anwar Ali: I want to thank Allah for helping us win the game. We always had the belief as I have played such innings in the past. The wicket was true and our batters played outstandingly. To have a batter like Rilee in your team always helps. We have a game left, hopefully we can do well in that.

Rilee Rossouw | Player of the Match: I think I took something from what Roy said the other night, got to go from ball one and it paid off. It might be, because it is a run-chase and everything adds up, the pressure and all, probably my best knock ever. I laughed because TKC told cover to come in for the 1 and then told him to go back because he might get killed [on why he laughed when Pollard hit the flat six over cover]. It's unbelievable. Very very good, some lucky shots and bad bowling gets you to 240. There's a place to still bowl there. I can't reveal my secrets [on where the bowlers need to bowl].

Mohammad Rizwan | Multan captain: The belief was there, when the strategic timeout came, Mushy bhai and Andy came out and told us to squeeze whatever we could from an over. The way Pollard and Rilee played, I can't say much. But the first ball six from Usama was amazing. We made a mistake in our bowling and the plan. We missed the plan in the last two overs when they hit big. We were talking about the other day that we have not seen you win games with the bat, but tonight he did it [on Anwar Ali]. The way we came back and chased 243 after our bowling was awesome. We will try our best tomorrow and then leave it to the almighty.

I called it at the end of PZ innings. 240 is not enough. 250 is minimum to feel comfortable.

Looking at the way Multan batted, even 260 would have been chased.

Peshawar lost the game the moment they got Shan Masood out. That was the moment the game was lost.

I would say Khushdil’s wicket was another turning moment.

Poor Saim Ayub thought he had the game locked down. I bet he would be kicking himself for bowling that good delivery.

Tbh you would have expected Anwar Ali and Usama Mir to notch the chase considering Pakistani players are unreliable

They needed a special moment like the TD wicket during Russouw’s innings

I did expect Anwar Ali to tonk a few. He has a reputation of finishing games like this.

But Usama Mir was a total surprise, the game was already decided before his faced his first delivery—courtesy of Anwar Ali.

Peshawar Zalmi failed to defend 240 runs or more for the second successive time as Multan Sultans won the 486-run thriller by four wickets to storm into the HBL Pakistan Super League 2023 playoffs in front of another full-house at the Pindi Cricket Stadium on Friday.

Rilee Rossouw stroked the fastest HBL PSL century off 41 balls, improving his own record by two balls, and Kieron Pollard blasted a 25-ball 52 as Multan Sultans achieved the 243-run target with five balls to spare. Multan Sultans needed 18 off two overs and three runs in the last over.

Rossouw was dismissed when 16 runs were required off nine balls after a blistering 121 off 51 balls with 12 fours and eight sixes. He had reached his 50 off 17 balls with six fours and four sixes, and featured in three match-winning partnerships.

Together with Pollard, who slapped three fours and five sixes, Rossouw put on 99 runs for the third wicket in 43 balls after Mohammad Rizwan (5) and Shan Masood (7) were back in the hut at the score of 28. For the fifth wicket with Khushdil Shah (18), Rossouw added 58 runs from 29 balls before he put on 21 off 13 with Anwar Ali (24 not out).

After Rossouw’s departure, Usama Mir ensured the good work of the South African was not spoiled as he clubbed a four and a six in a three-ball 11 not out to bring another famous win for the 2021 champions.

While this was a record HBL PSL run-chase, this is the joint-second highest run-chase overall in T20 cricket. For Peshawar Zalmi, it was the second successive time they were unable to defend this sizeable score after Quetta Gladiators had achieved the 241-run target for the loss of two wickets with 10 balls to spare.

The result means Peshawar Zalmi can now progress to the playoffs if Quetta Gladiators lose to Multan Sultans on Saturday evening or they defeat Islamabad United on Sunday afternoon. Both matches are scheduled in Rawalpindi.

Earlier, a Babar Azam masterclass, an attacking half-century by Saim Ayub and cameos by Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Mohammad Haris lifted Peshawar Zalmi to 242 for six after they had elected to bat first.

Babar Azam slapped nine fours and two sixes in a 39-ball 73, an innings that lifted him to second position on the leading run-getters table with 416 runs (12 runs behind Mohammad Rizwan of Multan Sultans). Saim Ayub continued his fairytale run when he clobbered five fours and four sixes in a 33-ball 58.

The master and his disciple provided Peshawar Zalmi a 134-run start, which was fully capitalised on by Haris (35 off 11 with one fours and four sixes) and Kohler-Cadmore (38 off 18 with four fours and two sixes).

Abbas Afridi was the pick of bowlers on what was a though day for the bowlers. The fast bowler registered figures of 4-0-39-4. The most expensive bowlers of the day were Anwar Ali of Mulatn Sultans (4-0-66-1) and Azmatullah Omarzai of Peshawar Zalmi (4-0-62-2).

Peshawar Zalmi reached 64 for no loss in the PowerPlay overs, 115 for no loss after the halfway stage and 173 for four after 15 overs. In the last five overs, Peshawar Zalmi collected 69 runs.

In contrast, Multan Sultans reached 66 for two in the PowerPlay overs, 131 for three after the halfway stage and 182 for four after 15 overs.

Bowlers just can't keep with this non-sense. They are getting tired.

I am not impressed by one bit by any batsman who thumps his chest to score runs in the 57 meter boundaries.

Take the bowlers out and install bowling machines that can consistently bowl at 160/165 clicks with different variations.

Ye kya horaha hai PSL walon 242 first inning 246 second inning and that too 5 balls remaining...

240 na hogaya 130-150 hogaya har koi bana raha hai.

I am glad bowlers are getting to bowl in these conditions. They need to learn how to bowl in these conditions

Scoring a 100 now in PSL is equivalent to a 50 lol.

It’s foosball instead of football and table tennis instead of tennis. That’s the effect of these mini fun sized boundaries.

I know at PP AA gets dunked on, and understandably so at times as he’s bits and pieces at the intl level.

But batting wise, check him out in tape ball cricket on YouTube. I believe he opened too if I remember correctly (don’t quote me on this).

So yes, in a domestic league i was expecting him to hit out as well . He’s worked as hard as he could with the ability he has with the bat. Finished a game too with the bat Vs SL in 2016 was it?
