Ali Tareen, the owner of Multan Sultans, revealed that his franchise had been bearing all expenses for star pacer Ihsanullah after his injury. This occurred while explaining why Ihsanullah could not return from an elbow injury, which he suffered in March 2023 during a home series against New Zealand. Ali Tareen indicated that this responsibility should have been taken by PCB. However, he also mentioned that the national cricketing body helped the cricketer acquire a UK visa for treatment abroad, where he is expected to be re-evaluated by a surgeon.

Ali Tareen responded to a fan on X, updating them about the pacer’s injury and clarified that his injury was initially misdiagnosed and his surgery was unsuccessful, putting his international career on the line.

From 1949 to 2024, there has been no proper medical panel with the PCB. What are your thoughts on this mismanagement of the PCB medical board?

Respect to Ali Tareen for going out of his way to take care of Ihsanullah in this way.

Probably the most incompetent board I have ever seen in my life.

Yet people still somehow find ways to defend the system. Unbelievable.

Naqvi is gonna pick up a fight with Ali now.

THis is not gonna end well, before PCB does anything stupid they need to remember Ali Tareen owns a PSL team.

I don't understand the process here perhaps someone with a more medical background can enlighten me.

The PCB misdiagnosis an injury - ok I can understand it. I'm assuming the player then goes to a private hospital for the surgery. Don't the surgeons or team in the hospital double check or do their own diagnosis? Or do they just perform surgery based on the PCB report.

Ali is helping his players in recovery why would they go after him.

The PCB is what it is expected to be.

Unprofessional and full of incompetent people who should be nowhere near cricket let alone the country's board .

until and unless the PCB is not run independently without interference we will continue to see repeats.

IN SHA ALLAH Ihsanullah will get sorted by the right people and return to bowling 150k plus rockets.

What else u can expect from PCB.. check their degrees i m sure most of them would have fake ones.

How in the world do you keep misdiagnosing the issue and performing surgery on the wrong area? Come on man, that is death to a fast bowler.

I feel so bad for this kid who was just seeing his career on the rise and its been completely destroyed now. Are they going to make him whole on his career earnings? Of course not. He'll be tossed away and lose out on a promising career.

I really don't know how PCB is allowed to get away with this time after time again. An absolutely disgusting shameless board who don't care about the players health & well-known and will throw away players like dirt as long as they make their money.

I hope the players band together and form a union. From a player arriving to another league and then being told no NOC is being given and he has to fly back to centrally contracted player having his contract ripped up & reinstated weeks later to destroying players careers with misdiagnosis - I don't think players should look to accept this nonsense anymore and form a union. Might even get a more fair pay then too once PCB books are looked at & disclosed.

I’ve been saying this for years now.

If you’re a fast bowler employed by PCB, watch your back.

Do not trust PCB with your body. Diet, rehab, surgeries etc. I know it’s easier said than done, but if you can do it out of your own pocket, do it.

They will ruin you and then move on to the next prospect to ruin as you find something else to do.

In Sha Allah he recovers. But he’s not the first case like this.

PCB has been a joke of an organization since they have developed a habit of changing chairman every hour.

Ihsanullah's career has been buried under the rubble for a good whole year now and who will take responsibility for all of this stuff? Nobody.

I hope all the players never have to go through such a phase because it is gonna cut short their career.

Hoping for a speedy recovery for this young lad.

The sad thing is, PCB will never learn from this. Take the bootcamps for example.

But what I don’t understand is, surely there is a medical expert which approves all of this? Where was he/she during this saga?

Sad news . Guys like Ihsanullah can't afford to lose time because of PCB incompetence especially since he's already very overaged .

He'll miss an already small window of opportunity to make it as a professional cricketer

The doctor in question is guilty of messing up COVID19 protocols during PSL 2020 or 2021, I don’t remember exactly.

Should never been hired back, but the likes of Sethi or Zaka Ashraf will never learn.

As per media reports, PCB Director of Medical and Sports Sciences, Dr. Sohail Saleem, has asserted that the MRI report of Ihsanullah's elbow was not misdiagnosed but rather misinterpreted.

Doubtful of the report's diagnosis, he sought a re-diagnosis from his panel radiologist in England, which contradicted the initial diagnosis.

Recovery after surgery is not immediate, taking 9 to 18 months.

Elbow rehabilitation for baseball players takes about as long, sometimes even longer than rehabilitation, which is not a significant concern. Under similar circumstances, no athlete is subjected to vigorous exercise while experiencing pain.

Ihsanullah is receiving proper care and rehabilitation; it is inaccurate to suggest that he has been neglected. PSL franchisors are also part of the cricket board, and there are no issues with collaboration.

I don't want to demean anyone. But i have seen Pakistani patients in Delhi and Bangalore. They come to India for complicated procedures. Some say they would have come to India for far simpler procedures if it was easier to come here.

While there are some pakistani doctors who are excellent, many are avg.

For sports related injuries it wasn't prudent to have him treated in anywhere in the subcontinent. Its a very very specialised field.

Sports medicine isn't very well developed in India, let alone the subcontinent. Its far more developed in Europe and America.

Exactly, your spot on.

Subcontinent is still understanding or there lack of with sports science.

Regardless of how much it costs, going to countries like UK, Australia & Canada is more insightful, more helpful & more rehabilitating.

NCA also messes up injury management of Indian players. Just the usual third world nonsense.

We will always underachieve and ENA will overachieve. SA has also become like a third world hellhole now.

That's why now all our players are sent to UK for surgery or in some cases Mumbai.

I don't understand one thing. Fans demand PCB to induct in their favorite players or exclude non performers.

But why don't the same fans demand from PCB to install state of the art medical institute for Pakistani players rehabilitation? Why don't journalists push the chairman with bitter truth questions about lack of focus on rehabilitation but will ask even dividing question of likeness dislikeness?

Dr. Sohail has a proven history of misdiagnoses, misinterpretation and mismanagement. He's an incompetent doctor and shouldn't even be in any hospital let alone occupying head position of Medical panel in PCB.

Because its easy to blame the players because that's who fans & journalist see. No one really knows what goes on behind the scenes with domestic coaches, selectors, batting coaches, bowling coaches, training, nutritionist, training equipment, facilities medical/injuries information etc. It's why players get lost in the system never to be heard from again.

People blame players for the short comings because its the easiest despite how hard many of them have it. Considering none of the domestic coaches even get considered for the national setup, how confident can we even be they're any good at their jobs as batting/bowling/fielding/main coach. India/Aus/Eng have modern facilities and equipment at their disposal to help their players develop to their absolute best. Can we reliably say Pakistan have the same? It's always harder to compete at the world stage when you're lacking so many things but regardless, players will still eat all the blame.

How is this on Naqvi when it was Najam Sethi at the helm? OR was it Zaka? Both clowns. Naqvi has been reported to be furious over these reports.

He needs to be blacklisted.

Ihsanullah was the most exciting prospect in bowling, with no bowler coming close to him. He made Rauf look ordinary in his last PSL outing. With his height, control, and pace, this guy was unplayable. It's tragic that such talent got wasted like this and we will be stuck with the likes of Rauf, zaman, Wasim. Unbelievable!

He needs to be blacklisted.

What do you expect? Dostee Yaaree at the PCB.

He was fired by Wasim Khan and brought back in later by the other guys.

Ali Tareen is a bit of an opportunist and not a doodh ka dhula shehzada like he acts. He is a product of dynastic politics and I would take whatever he says with a grain of salt.

Maybe he’s just taking cheap shots at the PCB (the Establishment) because his daddy was sidelined by them.

Not necessarily true in terms of SA. The rich and powerful still enjoy a great life. I was in Caoe Town a few months ago - felt as first world as anything in Central Europe.

Misinterpreted an MRI… lol… you have got to be joking.

Take this hack doctor and sue him. Should never practice again.

Have seen far too many reports like this from Pakistan with regular citizens let alone sportsmen . Doctors botching surgeries and then going “whoops we messed up, gotta do it again”

This is why passionate medical students usually look to move outside of Pak for further studies in the field if they can.

I wouldn't ask PCB's doctors to treat a stomach ache. Like many aspects of Pakistani public life, there's little accountability for screwups and gross negligence - and you can always expect the same characters to keep returning like some B grade soap opera !

Incase people forgot - this doctor was sacked after the COVID outbreak during PSL only to return thanks to Najam Sethi. Even the PCB medical panel isn't free from political interference.

Then PCB has a platform to deny it but they never did which means grapes r sour..

Did you held these views when PTI was still with tareen?

A lot of Pakistani players whose injuries have been mismanaged and they were never the same ie Shoaib Akhtar, Saqlain Mushtaq, Mohammad Zahid, Haris Sohail, Umar Gul, Shaheen Afridi, Ehsanullah etc

You saw what happened to Afridi: his massive drop in pace after his mistreated injury. In 2021, he was touching 150kph, making him a lethal swing bowler with pace, and now he's dropped to a 129-135kph bowler on average.

As mentioned in some replies, the PCB obviously has a defunct medical panel that needs to be sorted out, otherwise Ihsanullah will soon be competing with Mohammad Nawaz for pace.

Update on Ihsanullah:

Fast bowler Ihsanullah left for Manchester, England, on Sunday morning for his crucial appointment on Monday with esteemed orthopedic surgeon, Professor Adam Watts, regarding his elbow injury. Professor Watts specialises in hand and wrist surgery, shoulder and elbow procedures, sports injuries, and trauma surgery.

Ihsanullah's franchise, Multan Sultans, has collaborated with the PCB to secure this appointment. The PCB, as Ihsanullah’s parent body, will cover all expenses for his treatment and rehabilitation.

Further updates will be provided by the PCB following Professor Watts' assessment and diagnosis.

Another surgery and another round of rehab. He'll probably take one or two years to get back in the team, but it's not certain.

He's probs done, these types of surgeries are lethal and usually result it either never playing again or another haris sohail situation.

He should be looking at suing the PCB. They’ve single handily ruined his career. An elbow injury mismanaged like this is pretty much a death sentence for a fast bowler - and then you couple that now with what seems like a shoulder injury as well.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi's speaking during a Press Conference at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore:

“I am waiting for the report of Ihsanullah. I don’t want to comment right now. We have received a complaint that his treatment was mishandled by PCB and he did not receive the treatment he should have. I have formed a board with the best orthopedic doctor and a professor of medicine. Whatever report they will produce and whoever will be responsible in it, action will be taken against them. And if it has been mishandled from any other side, we will also inform everyone about it. We had given them a week’s time but their work is a bit more, we are expecting their report to come by Tuesday or Wednesday.”

This guys career is obviously over. At this point, we are merely crutching at straws. He was not world class to begin with but after all this injury fiasco and a long hiatus, he is nowhere near the PCT anymore.

It’ll probably be another few years before he even think about making the team again and by then he will probably be too old anyway with his real age being closer to 28-30

So gut wrenching this. This guy would've been probably the fastest bowler on the circuit. His short ball was making INTL batsmen close their eyes and turn their heads away in fear. Hoping for a miracle comeback :(

Medical Committee submits report on Ihsanullah’s injury

The independent three-member Medical Committee, comprising Prof. Rana Dilawaiz Nadeem, Dr Mumraiz Naqshband and Prof. Javed Akram, tasked with reviewing the handling of fast bowler Ihsanullah’s right elbow injury and recommending next steps, submitted its detailed report to PCB Chairman Mr Mohsin Naqvi on Thursday.

After a thorough examination of the case history, including all MRI, ultrasound, and related reports, interviews with members of the PCB Medical and Sports Sciences Department, Ihsanullah and consultations with renowned surgeons and specialists, including Prof. Adam Watts (Consultant Hand, Elbow & Upper Limb Surgeon), Mr Javed Mughal (Director and Lead Physiotherapist, Rainham Physiotherapy Centre), and Dr Mohammad Waseem (Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon, Shoulder & Elbow Specialist), the committee has recommended the following:

“Ihsanullah should continue with aggressive physiotherapy and rehabilitation of right elbow and shoulder. Surgery may be the last option if he does not recover in six to 12 months.”

In addition to recommending the treatment plan, the Medical Committee has also identified and highlighted delays in the diagnosis of Ihsanullah’s injury and inappropriate prescription of treatment, as well as non-compliance by the fast bowler with the prescribed rehabilitation plan.

The independent three-member Medical Committee’s conclusion:

“The committee concludes that Ihsanullah’s condition of right elbow pain was not addressed, treated and operated appropriately. There was a delay in reaching the clinical diagnoses and investigations. He did not receive a formal rehabilitation process as required by his condition.

“His surgery was planned hurriedly without any specialist review and preoperative assessment.

“The surgeon recommended by Director of Medical and Sports Sciences was inappropriate, lacking the academics and experience in the field.

“Postoperatively, Mr Ihsanullah was not fully compliant to the rehabilitation protocols as alleged by the PCB officials. He continues to have medial elbow pain along with shoulder dyskinesia. He has significant elbow stiffness for which surgery is not advised currently as per advice of national and international appropriate experts in the specialty shoulder and elbow.

“However, we strongly believe that in view of the talent possessed by Ihsanullah, he be physically assessed on his arrival to Pakistan whereby an appropriate rehabilitation plan be developed in a multidisciplinary fashion, including consideration of hydrodilation and the same be implemented to provide the best chance to the player to live up to his potential again.”

Furthermore, the Medical Committee also conducted reviews on the cases of Arshad Iqbal, Zeeshan Zameer, and women’s cricketer Shawal Zulfikar.

Regarding Arshad, the committee recommended a two-month rehabilitation programme, while for Zeeshan, the committee suggested the bowler undergoes examination by a foot and ankle specialist. As for Shawal, the committee suggested conducting a CT scan of her right shoulder before proposing any further course of action.

Meanwhile, Dr Sohail Saleem, Director of Medical and Sports Sciences, has tendered his resignation, which has been accepted by the PCB.

PCB

So Dr Sohail just resigns and that's it. This guy was dismissed from the PCB a few years ago but he used his connections to get back into the team a few years later and he will try to do the same again when there is a change in guard in the PCB.

How about filing a complaint against him with the Pakistani Medical Licensing authorities? There has to be proper accountability for doctors who through sheer negligence and incompetence ruin the careers of players under their watch.

Dr Sohail Saleem resigns as PCB Director Medical and Sports Sciences

LAHORE – Dr Sohail Saleem has stepped down from his post as Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Director Medical and Sports Sciences.

He informed the PCB chief about his resignation on Thursday. The development comes after PCB’s medical panel came under fire over negligent behavior regarding team players.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi then formed an independent medical panel to look into the matter. Naqvi also shared tweet about independent inquiry into the matter that led to the injuries of players including Ihsanullah.

Seasoned members including Professor Dr. Javed Akram, Professor Dr. Rana Dilawaiz, Dr. Mumraiz Naqshband were given task of finding negligence.

PSL sensation Ihsanullah faced an elbow injury and was sidelined for remaining events including the World Cup.

A report surfaced claiming that a player’s elbow was misdiagnosed, which has resulted in a routine injury turning into a significantly more serious one.
