Nawaz Sharif in London due to illness - Discussion Thread

LAHORE: Leaders of the ruling PTI and opposition PML-N, continued to spar on Sunday over accountability, the sugar inquiry commission report, and also now, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's leaked photo.

Punjab Information Minister Fayyaz-ul-Hassan Chohan reacted to a picture of Nawaz Sharif that went viral on social media.

"Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif have the traits of hypocrisy and misrepresentation in common," Chohan said.

"Nawaz used to say that no one is more ill than him. He is [seen] brazenly sitting without a mask in the face of the coronavirus pandemic in London. Shehbaz used to say that no one is braver than him. Instead of fighting the coronavirus after returning from London, he is scared of it.

"Both Nawaz and Shehbaz are masters of hypocracy and misrepresentation," said the information minister.

He also criticised Nawaz's daughter, Maryam, for being "busy in a failed bid to decorate the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz on the picture" of her father.

He lambasted the former chief minister of Punjab for "using Shahid Khaqan Abbasi like a pawn to evade the NAB [National Accountability Bureau]".

Abbasi, he added, "is immersed deep in corruption, from head to toe".

Later in the day, PML-N leader Marriyum Aurangzeb responded to the PTI leader's attack, speaking instead about the sugar inquiry commission's report.

In a video statement, she said: "People have become aware that the Imran mafia and sugar thieves have been imposed on the country. Everyday, hired spokespeople perform their circus [acts]."

"Unsuccessful attempts are made to disillusion people by using the PML-N's name," Aurangzeb added,

She said that the party's president, Shehbaz, had not given "a single penny worth of subsidy in Punjab" but rather, had reduced the price of sugarcane and protected the farmers' rights.

Aurangzeb said that the Pakistan Commissions of Inquiry Act, 2017, was set up in the PML-N tenure, and that Prime Minister Imran Khan was bound to make the report public within 30 days. "This report has been made public because of the PML-N. Because transparency was the aim."

"Why did Imran Khan sahab decide to export despite the shortage of sugar in the country? Why was Imran Khan sahab — the main character of sugar theft — not called in the commission?" she went on to question.

Thereafter, the premier's aide on political communication Shahbaz Gill, also joined in the war of words.

He said the former premier's daughter, Maryam, "as usual, lied" about the picture and that it was "leaked on purpose" by the party.

"This picture was taken in the garden outside Hussain Nawaz's office," Gill said, adding that it was "an unsuccessful attempt was made to save a crumbling party".

The picture, he claimed, was taken from two angles and that the PML-N started "raising a hue and cry" that it was taken secretively. "No one else is sitting there and no one can go to their place," he said.

The aide criticised Nawaz as well, saying: "An elderly, sick man did not wear the mask so that he can be recognised in the picture. Party workers are going to the 'uncle' and so under this pressure, the picture was leaked," he said.

Gill also reacted to Aurangzeb's statement, saying she had been "crying over the [sugar] commission report all day long".

"[The PML-N leaders] seem to be realising that the noose of accountability is tightening around their necks. This is the mafia created by the Sharif family since decades.

"They are nervous. They know they have been caught. The inquiry commission's report has exposed their corruption and lies," he said.

"Books maintained for two accounts were seized in the Al-Arabiya Sugar Mills [case]," Gill added.

Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry has asked Prime Minister Imran Khan to investigate the medical test reports of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif that prepared in Pakistan.

“Nawaz Sharif’s picture from Britain shows that his health is good,” said the minister, referring to a recent picture of the former premier that went viral on social media, in a letter to PM Imran. He added that Nawaz is also not sharing his test reports from Britain with the government which had given rise to suspicion.

“This establishes that British laboratories have not confirmed Nawaz Sharif’s illness,” said the minister. He added that there are suspicions that the former prime minister submitted fake reports to the courts to ensure he moved abroad for treatment.

“Nawaz's picture in Britain shows he in good health,” said the minister, adding that it seems that the former prime minister had facts distorted in his report to ensure the way was paved for him to escape from Pakistan.

There is a need to investigate Nawaz Sharif’s test reports carried out in Pakistan,” Fawad wrote to the PM. He added that it should be probed as to who has distorted the test reports in Pakistan, adding that an inquiry committee should be established to determine who helped Nawaz escape.

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was spotted enjoying tea with family members outside his son’s office near Hyde Park in London after over two months of isolation following the COVID-19 lockdown.

The photo, seen circulating on social media, shows the PML-N supremo having tea with his grandchildren in the garden of Hasan Nawaz Sharif’s Hyde Park Place office.

This is the first time that the PML-N leader has left his apartment to go out in public after the coronavirus outbreak hit London, a source in the Sharif family said.

According to the source, Sharif took a walk from Park Lane flats to the office — ten minutes away.

As soon as the photo circulated on the media, a war of words broke out between PML-N leaders and PTI ministers and advisors.

Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry had wondered whether Pakistanis would trust the accountability system after this or not. He had said that such photos make a mockery of the country’s justice system, law, administration, and judicial system.

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) vice president Maryam Nawaz has urged the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) government to come out of ‘Nawaz syndrome’ and utilise its energies to control the spread of Covid-19.

“While people are suffering & losing their lives not only to Corona but to unprecedented & unbelievable incompetence, criminal negligence & apathy, the government continues to incurably suffer from Nawaz Sharif syndrome,” Ms Nawaz said in a tweet on Monday.

Talking about a leaked picture of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif at a roadside cafe in London that sparked a debate about his health, she said: “He walks because of strict advice from his doctors but you (PTI leaders) talk to cause distraction from the ongoing & impending disasters.”

She advised the government to get down to work. “Get down to work if you know how it is done, get help if you don’t.”

After the picture went viral on social media last Saturday, some PTI ministers and advisers have been targeting the former premier, claiming that he was in ‘good health’ and should come back to face corruption cases against him.

Uploading an image of news regarding possible phenomenal increase of coronavirus in Lahore, Maryam Nawaz said: “It is a classic and incorrigible case of highly misplaced priorities.”

According to a summary of primary and secondary health care department forwarded to the chief minister, six per cent of the total samples collected tested positive for Covid-19. In some towns, 14.7 per cent of the samples collected tested positive and there was not a single area in Lahore where the infection had not reached.

ISLAMABAD: An accountability court on Thursday issued a non-bailable arrest warrant for former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in the Toshakhana reference.

Nawaz, former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and former president Asif Ali Zardari were summoned to attend a hearing related to the Toshakhana reference today.

During the hearing, National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Prosecutor Muzaffar Abbasi appealed to the court to issue a non-bailable arrest warrant for Nawaz, saying that since he was abroad, advertisements against the PML-N chief can be published in foreign newspapers.

The prosecutor further informed the court that another co-accused in the case, Anwar Majeed, was incarcerated in Karachi's Malir jail for his alleged involvement in other references.

The hearing today was attended by Gilani and suspect Abdul Majid Ghani, while Zardari's application exempting him from appearing before the court today was accepted.

The court, while exempting Zardari from attending proceedings today, ordered that another notice for appearance be sent to the former president.

According to NAB, Zardari and Nawaz received cars from former prime minister Gilani illegally.

Zardari had paid only 15% of the total cost of the cars through fake accounts, according to NAB. He also received the cars as a gift from Libya and the UAE when he was president and used them for his personal use instead of depositing them in the treasury, alleged NAB.

The anti-graft body further alleged that Abdul Ghani Majeed paid for the vehicles through fake accounts whereas Anwar Majeed made more than Rs20 million through illegal transactions using the Ansari Sugar Mills accounts.

According to reports, Nawaz was not holding any public office in 2008 but was given a vehicle without any justification. NAB says the leaders have been charged with corruption under sub-sections 2, 4, 7 and 12 of Section 9 (A) of the NAB Ordinance.

The Toshakhana (gift depository) gift from any country to the head of the state remains the property of the government unless sold at an open auction. Rules allow officials to retain gifts with a market value of less than Rs10,000 without paying anything.

NAB are looking for any case(and there 1000s) that it could pretend to do something and then do nothing and Nooras and PPP could use the time bar laws. NAB especially the leadership of Budha Javed is a mafia front.

why are the Pakistani courts quiet now? Wasn't he supposed to update the court every other month and return once stable?

What a circus yet again by these guys.

LAHORE: To mark the World Father’s Day on Sunday (June 21) Maryam Nawaz Sharif shared her father’s brief letter written to her while both of them were serving jail term in corruption cases last year.

“Every day is #FathersDay for me but today there is no greater tribute than this brief letter. That even while going [to face] one revenge to another, the father is not concerned about his person, but about the daughter lying in the other dark prison cell. One life is too little to sacrifice for such a father!” she said in a tweet.

The brief handwritten letter in Urdu language penned on Oct 11, 2019, shared in the tweet, reads: “Dear daughter Maryam, Assalam-o-Alaikum. [The] NAB men are taking me away [from Kot Lakhpat Jail to National Accountability Bureau’s offices in Lahore] in Chaudhry Sugar Mills case today. I pray to Allah that He may create relief for us all. Take care of yourself and don’t worry. Allah may grant His mercy in abundance. My prayers are with you. Allah Hafiz. Father.”

The former prime minister is in London since November 2019 as the Lahore High Court granted him bail for treatment of his complicated heart problem after more than one medical boards set up by the government advised his treatment abroad as no local hospitals had the required facilities.

The ruling PTI didn’t challenge the LHC orders before the Supreme Court, though its leaders would publicly doubt the test reports on the basis of which the medical board advised Mr Sharif’s treatment abroad.

Maryam Nawaz was also bailed out and she saw her father off to London on a special air ambulance. But she was not allowed to leave the country as Mr Sharif’s treatment is still pending with many saying that the former prime minister wished that his daughter should be on his bedside when he would undergo heart surgery.

Ms Sharif has been apparently inactive in politics and in social media since then, allowing the critiques to say that perhaps her silence is part of some sort of deal reached with the Sharifs to give them relief in the court cases.

During this time, she rarely commented on any political development other than related to her father’s health, particularly pictures of Mr Sharif having coffee at Starbucks close to his residence in London.

But some believe that she is continuing her political meetings at Raiwind and the latest significant meeting was with a well known figure from the ruling PTI’s coalition partner.

Both the parties officially deny that the meeting took place but do not rule out indirect contacts between the two sides.

A PML-N official claims that some PTI leaders are also trying to approach Mian Nawaz Sharif in London through former finance minister Ishaq Dar. But the ex-premier is so far adamant on not meeting any rivals as he is insisting on holding new elections instead of going for any in-house change.

Govt ready to book ticket for Nawaz Sharif: Awan

Adviser to the Prime Minister on Parliamentary Affairs Senator Dr Babar Awan has said the PTI led federal government is ready to book tickets for PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif if he wants to return to Pakistan.

“The day he [Nawaz Sharif] takes the decision along with others to return to Pakistan, we will book tickets for them,” Dr Awan said while giving a policy statement in the National Assembly.

Three-times former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has been in London since November 19, 2019 after he was granted interim bail on medical grounds and later the permission to fly abroad to get medical treatment for a debilitating health condition.

The provincial government of Punjab in April this year asked Nawaz to surrender to authorities after he did not send the medical reports as demanded by a medical board.

Recently a picture of Nawaz did the rounds on social media, raising questions about his health condition with Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry calling for an inquiry into the reports of the medical board that had recommended his treatment abroad.

Nawaz has been serving a 7-year jail term since December 24, 2018 after his conviction by an accountability court in Al-Azizia corruption case. Interestingly, Nawaz Sharif cannot take part in politics as the apex court disqualified him for life for hiding his income in Panama Papers case in July 2017.

However, Dr Babar Awan told the Nation Assembly on Wednesday that the government has no objection to Nawaz’s coming back to Pakistan and taking part in party politics.

“As per the Constitution, freedom of movement is the fundamental right of every citizen,” he added.

The adviser also defended the Ehsaas Emergency Cash programme under which the federal government disbursed Rs12,000 each to 12 million families hit hardest by the lockdown and economic downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

“Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Poverty Alleviation Dr Sania Nishtar is ready to give a briefing to any committee about Ehsaas Emergency Cash programme. We have no objection to the briefing as demanded by the opposition, as it is very important for ensuring transparency,” he added.

He said answers would be given on transparency of the programme as it is one of the biggest cash transfer programmes of the country launched to provide financial assistance to the poor.

He said no one has any objection to the projects included in multi-billion-dollar China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Dr Awan said the government is also ready to hold discussion on opening tourism sector that is also greatly affected by the pandemic.

“SOPs [standard operating procedures] suggested in this regard by the opposition will be welcomed.”

Taking the floor, PML-N lawmaker Murtaza Javed Abbasi said the NA standing committee on finance had not taken any input from the members of the assembly on Finance Bill 2020-21.

He said enough funds had not been allocated for the tribal districts merged with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) province and despite passage of seven years no steps have been taken for rehabilitation of the people in the area that were once a hotbed of militancy.

He said in view of rising inflation, salaries of government employees should be increased. Abbasi also criticized the government over its coronavirus policy. He also asked the government to allocate funds for Abbottabad interchange on motorway.

“All development schemes started by the previous government in my area have been stopped by the PTI government. I request the government to announce a financial package for the people linked with the tourism industry,” he added.

Nawaz Sharif holds unregistered properties in London; says Fawad

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Science and Technology Chaudhry Fawad Hussain Friday said former prime minister Nawaz Sharif had made unregistered properties in London by looting the national exchequer.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government under dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan was committed to recover the looted national wealth from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz bigwig Nawaz Sharif in order to utilize the funds for the welfare and development of the country and masses, he said while talking to a private news channel.

The minister said the corruption cases against Nawaz Sharif were 100 percent correct despite of his denial that he did not own any property abroad.

He claimed that Nawaz Sharif had no future in Pakistan’s politics as he was involved in massive corruption cases.

He said Nawaz Sharif was the most corrupt leader while the court had declared Prime Minister Imran Khan as an honest and righteous person.

He said Prime Minister Imran Khan was also enjoying the immense public support as he had his personal intact vote across the country.

“There was no threat to PTI government and it would complete its constitutional term,” he added. He said the PTI government had pledged to put the country on path of development and prosperity.

He underlined the need to bring reforms in many national institutions including judiciary for yielding desirous results.

Last chance for Nawaz to appear in court on Aug 17

ISLAMABAD: An accountability court has started the process to declare former prime minister Nawaz Sharif a “proclaimed offender” while sending to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) – the top graft buster – bailable arrest warrants for former president Asif Ali Zardari in Toshakhana case.

COVID-19 can be 'fatal' for Nawaz, fresh medical report says

LAHORE: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s fresh medical report has advised that the ex-premier should refrain from stepping outside as he could get infected with COVID-19 that could prove "fatal" for him.

The PML-N supremo’s latest medical reports were submitted to the Lahore High Court on Tuesday by his lawyer Amjad Pervez in which doctors have suggested the three-time former prime minister avoid going outside due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Nawaz, who is undergoing treatment in London, is said to be suffering from unstable platelet levels, diabetes, heart, kidney and blood pressure related ailments, and his heart is not getting an adequate supply of blood, according to the report.

Doctors have also instructed Nawaz to continue with his physical activities and keep consulting medical experts.

The medical report added that doctors are aware of his current health condition.

Nawaz’s health deteriorated in October 2019 while he was in the custody of the National Accountability Bureau when his platelets count dropped abnormally.

The Islamabad High Court on October 26 heard the petitions of Al-Azizia reference for suspension of bail on emergency grounds and granted him an interim on medical and humanitarian grounds.

The federal government had stipulated an indemnity bond for Nawaz to go abroad for treatment, which was lifted by the Lahore High Court. The court had allowed the PML-N leader to go abroad for four weeks based on his affidavit, after which he left for London on November 19 for four weeks to receive medical treatment. The government, however, did not allow an extension in his stay.

Nawaz has also been named in the Toshakhana vehicles case which has accused him of illegally bending the gift depository's rules for his benefit to retain luxury gifts. He has been summoned by NAB for inquiry on multiple occasions and the accountability court has issued a non-bailable arrest warrant for him, noting his continued absence from court.

An advertisement for Nawaz's summons has been put up on the accountability court premises in Islamabad. The court has given the former premier one last chance and asked that he appear before it on August 17 to answer for the reference filed against him.

Nawaz has been declared a proclaimed offender.

LAHORE: Fresh medical report of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif filed with the Lahore High Court’s registrar office shows that he must undergo coronary catheterisation as a significant part of his heart is at risk.

The report signed by Dr David Lawrence, a London-based consultant cardiothoracic surgeon, states the medical investigations and opinions are indicative of significantly reduced blood supply to Mr Sharif’s heart and its impaired functionality.

It says the treatment of Mr Sharif has been carried out conservatively as is merited by the prognosis of various diseases he suffers from.

“A multidisciplinary approach was warranted for his safety while undergoing an invasive procedure due to underlying ITP (unstable platelet counts) and co-morbidities (hypertension, diabetes & kidney disease) which carry a significant risk of bleeding and possibility of a procedural or peri-procedural adverse cardiac event,” the report adds.

It explains that Mr Sharif will be scheduled for an invasive cardiac procedure once the hospitals starts planning elective procedures amidst Covid-19 pandemic and given that he, being in the high-risk category, is stable enough to go through the intervention.

Mr Sharif, given his age and significant disease burden, falls in the category of patients who, if exposed to the Covid-19 infection, may be at a much greater risk than a normal person, the consultant cautions in his report.

He advises that the former premier must take extra precautions and should not expose himself unnecessarily.

He also advises Mr Sharif to stay in close proximity of health facilities in London given the numerous risk factors he is exposed to.

The medical report filed by the legal team of Mr Sharif is duly attested by a notary public of London.

The LHC had in 2019 allowed Mr Sharif to travel abroad, initially for a period of four weeks, granting bail to him on medical grounds. His lawyers were directed by the court to keep filing his periodical medical reports.

zero sympathy.

One honest question. Do a lot of Pakistanis still have sympathy for him? I'm asking this because so many people still had sympathy for him during the court case even after he was found guilty. Do those people still sympathise with him?

The reason why I'm asking this is because we have people in India who are blind to everything and would still support corrupt politicians. It's common here.

yes there are many who still sympathise with him and feel he was their champion. Even though he did nothing for them they have been brainwashed into thinking he was some kind of saviour. These politicians prey on the uneducated and use propaganda to get their way. Near the elections they throw money at these uneducated masses to get votes.

e.g. just before an election a local politician will make sure the road he promised ten years ago will get asphalted up. then the villagers will say "see what a great guy he built us a road" while not realising he could have build that years ago and also didnt provide anyone health or sanitation etc. Or these nawaz types will visit peoples funerals or on Eid and people will say "look how much izzat he gave us, lets vote for him" and so forth.

Luckily in the last election enough people realised they had been made a fool of and voted for IK but there are still people who want the looters back.

Al-Azizia reference: IHC raises questions over status of Nawaz’s bail

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Curt (IHC) on Monday raised questions over the status of former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Mian Nawaz Sharif’s bail in Al-Azizia reference.

A two-member bench, comprising Chief Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Aamer Farooq raised questions, while hearing ex-PM Nawaz Sharif’s petition challenging his non-bailable arrest warrants issued by an accountability court, and requesting the court to permit him to join the Toshakhana reference proceedings through his pleader.

Barrister Jahangir Khan Jadoon, representing Nawaz Sharif, who is currently in the UK and facing a case related to securing a luxury vehicle from Toshakhana, made chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB), judge of the accountability court-III and the investigation officer in Toshakhana reference as respondents.

The court said that the counsels were not able to satisfy the court regarding maintainability of the petition. It noted that the petitioner assailed the conviction and sentence handed down by Accountability Court in Al-Azizia case through Crl Appeal No.01/2019 titled “Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif vs Chairman NAB”.

The court noted, “The sentence was suspended for a specified period based on the report of a medical board constituted by the Government of Punjab. The latter could have extended the suspension of sentence if satisfied that the medical condition of the petitioner warranted so.”

It is noted that the name of the petitioner was not ordered to be removed from the Exit Control List by this Court.

In reply to a query, the counsels informed the court that the name of the petitioner was removed from the Exit Control List pursuant to the decision taken by the Federal Cabinet.

“However, neither the Federal Government nor the National Accountability Bureau informed this Court regarding the fate of the suspended sentence nor that the name of the petitioner was being removed from the Exist Control List. The petitioner also did not inform this Court nor had sought permission before proceeding abroad,” maintained the IHC bench.

It added that in case the suspended sentence on medical ground was not extended by the Government of Punjab, then in such an eventuality the petitioner was required to surrender himself before this Court or to have challenged the executive order before the competent court vested with territorial jurisdiction. The bench observed that the jurisdiction of the IHC under Article 199 of the Constitution is extra ordinary and equitable, therefore, in order to claim relief the petitioner has to satisfy us that he has invoked the constitutional jurisdiction with clean hands. Then, the counsels of former prime minister sought adjournment to seek instructions regarding status of suspension of sentence and argue the maintainability of the petition on the next date of hearing.

The IHC bench, therefore, deferred hearing until August 20th. According to the reference, Sharif as well as former president and co-chairperson of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Asif Ali Zardari had obtained cars from Toshakhana by paying only 15 per cent of the price of the luxury vehicles.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) alleged that ex-PM Yousaf Raza Gillani facilitated the allotment of the vehicles to Zardari and Sharif by “dishonestly” and “illegally” relaxing the procedure for the acceptance and disposal of gifts vide a Cabinet Division memorandum of 2007.

The accountability court-III of Islamabad had issued non-bailable warrants for the PML-N leader for not attending the court’s proceeding in the reference and had also initiated the process to declare him a proclaimed offender.

The PML-N leader’s counsel adopted, “The bailable, non-bailable arrest warrant and further proclamation under Section 87 of CrPC is the impugned interference in the life and liberty of the petitioner and he has been deprived from his constitutional and fundamental rights, because the petitioner did not conceal himself from any process of the law. The petitioner always holds the rule of law supreme in his life.”

The petition said, “The proclamation order dated June 30, 2020 in respect of the petitioner issued by respondent No. 2 [accountability judge] is of the alleged irregularity; hence, on the face of it all the impugned orders seems to be issued due to personal vendetta, victimisation, mala fides, with malice aforethought of the respondent No. 1 [NAB's chairman].”

Therefore, the petition prayed before the court to declare the arrest warrants illegal and as the ex-premier himself desired to join the proceeding of the accountability court, he be allowed to do this through the pleader.

The business class are very sympathetic to him. Especially the ones living in lahore and sheikhapura.

Pmln looks after the well being of businessman and they have done great work in lahore.

Educated pakistanis never support him because his govt is doesnt care about foreign affairs and there foreign policies and policies for the cpuntry are ridiculous.

What his govt does is build a metro or a motorway and our awam goes gaga. But at the same time his policies result in inflation in the long term which the awam doesnt understand

ISLAMABAD: The counsel for former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Thurs*day withdrew a petition filed in the Islamabad High Court challenging his non-bailable arrest warrants issu*ed by an accountability court and seeking permission to join the Toshakhana reference proceedings through a pleader.

Subsequently, an IHC div*ision bench comprising Chief Justice Athar Min*allah and Justice Aamer Farooq “dismissed the petition as withdrawn”.

During a brief hearing on the petition, Justice Min*allah inquired about the status of the bail granted to Mr Sharif in the Al-Azizia reference for six weeks by the IHC bench on Oct 30 last year.

Counsel Jahangir Khan Jadoon informed the court that his client had instructed him to withdraw the petition.

When contacted to find the reason for withdrawal of the petition, former federal law minister Khalid Ranjha said that after the expiry of suspension of sentence the accused had to surrender before jail authorities first in order to seek further relief.

He said Mr Sharif didn’t file any representation before the IHC or any other forum for extension of suspension of his sentence and since the bail-granting order had also expired, he was an absconder now.

Mr Ranjha said the court could have issued a directive for repatriation in case the counsel failed to justify the status of the bail and this might be the reason for withdrawal of Mr Sharif’s petition.

Questioning the status of the bail granted to Mr Sharif in Al-Azizia reference, the IHC division had on Aug 17 declared: “Until the decision of the provincial government on the application [for extension of bail], he [Mr Sharif] shall continue to remain on bail.

“However, if petitioner [Mr Sharif] does not approach the provincial government within the period mentioned herein above, this order shall cease to have effect on lapse of period of eight weeks and the bail granted shall stand revoked/cancelled.”

According to the reference, Mr Sharif as well as former president and PPP co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari had obtained cars from Toshakhana by paying only 15 per cent of the price of the luxury vehicles.

The National Accountability Bureau alleged that former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani had facilitated the allotment of the vehicles to Mr Zardari and Mr Sharif by dishonestly and illegally relaxing the procedure for the acceptance and disposal of gifts vide a cabinet division memorandum of 2007.

The accountability court-III of Islamabad had issued non-bailable warrants for Nawaz Sharif for not attending the court proceedings in the reference and had also initiated the process to declare him a proclaimed offender.

According to the petition, Toshakhana reference is an offshoot of the fake bank accounts case in which a joint investigation team did not establish anything against Mr Sharif. However, the petition went on to state that the name of the PML-N supreme leader surfaced “surprisingly” in the reference and the accountability court judge had initially summoned him and later issued non-bailable arrest warrants for him.

The petition argued that the IHC had granted Mr Sharif bail on Oct 29, 2019 on medical grounds, yet the accountability court judge initiated the process to declare the former premier a proclaimed offender under Section 87 of the Criminal Procedure Code. It recalled that Mr Sharif did not abscond but went to the United Kingdom on Nov 19, 2019 for medical treatment “with the approval of the government of Pakistan”.

“Knowingly that the petitioner [Mr Sharif] is not in Pakistan and at the time of filing reference and summoning the accused, the petitioner is out of the country for medical reasons after fulfilling all legal formalities, the respondents were misled by the investigation officer,” the petition had argued.

The petition had requested the high court to declare the arrest warrants illegal and as the ex-premier himself desired to join the proceeding of the accountability court, he be allowed to do so through the pleader.

LAHORE/ISLAMABAD: Declaring former prime minister Nawaz Sharif an “absconder”, Adviser to the Prime Minster on Accountability and Interior Shahzad Akbar has said that Mr Sharif’s four-week bail on medical grounds expired in December last year and the government had already approached the UK government for his extradition.

“The government is treating him (Sharif) as an absconder and has already sent a request to the British government to extradite him,” Mr Akbar said while addressing a press conference in Lahore on Saturday.

“His stroll on London roads is a slap in the face of the judiciary and the government cannot allow this. There is nothing personal in it: we are only trying to implement the law and fulfil its requirements,” the adviser maintained.

Mr Akbar said that the government would request the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to pursue Mr Sharif’s extradition as well and it was also looking into legalities of guarantees of Shahbaz Sharif, who was supposed to escort his elder brother back to Pakistan after his medical treatment.

Special Assistant to the PM Shahbaz Gill and Punjab Minister for Information Fayyazul Hassan Chohan were present at the news conference.

Shahzad Akbar says ex-premier submitted fake lab reports

The adviser said that on Oct 29 last year the court granted Mr Sharif eight-week bail for treatment within Pakistan and on Nov 16, he got a four-week permission to travel abroad for treatment. According to Mr Akbar, the former prime minister was supposed to keep the court and the Punjab government updated about his treatment by sharing the details of the process of his treatment and test reports which he didn’t do.

He said that Mr Sharif applied to the Punjab government for bail extension on Feb 19.

A medical board was constituted which sought details of medical procedures being done and test reports of Mr Sharif, but nothing was shared.

He said that the law ministry, NAB and the prison department were informed about the bail expiry and rejection of its extension when the medical board got nothing as evidence document.

He said the UK government was also informed about the development on March 2 with a request for Mr Sharif’s extradition.

Commenting on recent pictures of Mr Sharif, Mr Akbar said that the former premier looked perfectly fine in the pictures being shared by his sons.

As far as “NRO plus plus”, a term coined by the government to describe the opposition’s demand in negotiations with it on some legal issues, was concerned, “Imran Khan would not yield even N of the NRO plus plus”, he insisted.

Mr Akbar said the opposition had a desire that money laundering should be taken out of NAB’s purview. On the other hand, he said, the world took money laundering as a very serious crime and so did the PTI.

He said it was because of money laundering that Pakistan was put on the grey list of the FATF. He said that the opposition needed to understand the seriousness of the crime and the world’s concerns on it.

Not to be left behind, Shahbaz Gill chimed in with allegation of “rigging of medical tests” by Nawaz Sharif.” He claimed that if the quantity of ETDA — a chemical that functions by binding calcium in the blood and prevents blood clotting — was increased during sample collection, platelets count could be manipulated.

“This is precisely what the Sharif family did. It was allowed to take and submit blood samples of Nawaz Sharif and manipulated the samples,” he alleged.

Mr Chohan criticised Maryam Nawaz and her “brand of politics” and said that she had only damaged herself by bringing workers carrying stones to attack NAB offices.

Talking to media persons after attending a journalists’ training workshop in Islamabad, federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry said Nawaz Sharif was roaming in the streets of London and enjoying coffee. He said that submission of fake medical reports amounted to committing fraud.

The minister said that the Punjab government would investigate Mr Sharifs medical reports to expose the people who had “rigged” them.

“I had said earlier also that Nawaz Sharif is not sick and should not be given any relaxation. Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz have the same problem. They just want all cases against them to be shut down,” he added.

The minister alleged that Pakistan was placed in the Financial Action Task Force (FATF)’s grey list due to the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), alleging that the opposition parties created hurdles when the government was striving to remove the country from the grey list.

He said that PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif and PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari together could not gather enough people to fill a marriage hall. He also criticised Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman.

Earlier, Mr Chaudhry said in a tweet that Nawaz Sharif’s departure to London had damaged the PTI narrative and the process of accountability. He said that those involved in preparing fake medical reports of Mr Sharif should be given exemplary punishment.

Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry said on Monday that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif went to London for treatment from prison and will return to it the moment he lands in Pakistan.

The federal minister, in a statement, said that the court has changed the surety in the case, but it needs to summon Shehbaz Sharif to discuss Nawaz’s return.

“First of all, Nawaz was serving jail time so when he returns, he will go back to jail. Secondly, Nawaz will do plea bargain and return the money [he allegedly looted],” said the minister.

Chaudhry stated that Nawaz had been disqualified by the apex court and cannot contest elections.

PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah reacted to Chaudhry’s statement, and said that Nawaz went abroad due to illness, adding that there are relevant statements on the matter by the medical board and government officials.

He further said that the “incompetent lot” is contradicting its own statements. “If Nawaz went abroad because of a deal then who allowed it?” wondered the former Punjab law minister.

He continued that Nawaz will return on his own will, and the time he wishes to return upon completion of his treatment.

Earlier on Saturday, Prime Minister Imran Khan's special assistant on accountability, Shahzad Akbar, said that former premier Nawaz Sharif had left the country for treatment on certain conditions and that none of these had been fulfilled, as the National Accountability Bureau stepped up efforts to continue proceedings in the two cases against him.

NAB has filed an appeal in the Islamabad High Court for Nawaz's seven-year imprisonment sentence in the Al Azizia Steel Mills case to be extended to 14 years. The case will be heard by Justices Amir Farooq and Mohsin Akhtar Kayani on September 1.

Furthermore, a hearing against Nawaz's acquittal in the Flagship Investments case will also be held that same day, for which another appeal was filed by NAB.

'Exhaust all options'
Last week, Minister for Information Shibli Faraz on Friday vowed that the government "will bring back Nawaz Sharif using all legal means that are available".

Addressing a media briefing in Islamabad, Faraz said that the government will approach the National Accountability Bureau which will in turn ask the foreign ministry to put in a request to the British government for the PML-N supremo's extradition.

"We think it has now become necessary to bring back Nawaz Sharif," the information minister said, adding that it is now the court's job to decide in the matter and that the government will facilitate necessary action.

Kulsoom Nawaz had to die to prove to PTI trolls that she wasn’t faking it. Apparently PMLN members cannot have health problems.

Nawaz’s sojourn in London may end soon

ISLAMABAD/LONDON: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday directed former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to appear before the court and surrender to the authorities by September 10 or face legal proceedings for absconsion.

A division bench of the high court comprising Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani and Justice Aamer Farooq also directed the deputy attorney general to verify the medical condition of Mr Sharif through the Pakistani High Commission in London.

The bench issued the directives during the hearing of appeals filed by Mr Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law retired captain Mohammad Safdar against conviction in National Accountability Bureau (NAB) references.

The former prime minister, his daughter and son-in-law were convicted in Avenfield properties reference on July 6, 2018, while Mr Sharif was also convicted in Al-Azizia reference on Dec 24, 2018.

Appearing before the bench, Khawaja Haris Ahmed, the counsel for Mr Sharif, contended that the high court had suspended the sentence awarded to the appellant and granted bail for a period of eight weeks with the observation that if it was to be extended the same should be done by the Punjab government under Section 401(2) of the Criminal Procedure Code.

It was submitted that the provincial government, vide its decision dated Feb 27, 2020, did not extend the suspension of sentence of the appellant and as such the suspension and bail of the appellant lapsed. However, the counsel argued that the appellant’s health did not allow him to travel to Pakistan and appear before the court.

He apprised the court that the appellant went abroad after filing a writ petition before the Lahore High Court, which was still pending, while an undertaking was also tendered by the brother of the appellant before the LHC that in terms of the undertaking if the appellant had to stay abroad for more than four weeks, the medical condition would be determined by a representative of the High Commission of Pakistan in the United Kingdom.

When the counsel was asked if the appellant was hospitalised, he replied in the negative.

Opposing the request for exemption from court appearance, NAB Additional Prosecutor General Jahanzeb Khan Bharwana argued that the appellant was not on bail and, therefore, he should be declared an absconder.

When confronted, the counsel admitted that since the appeal had been admitted for regular hearing, it was to be decided on merit even if the appellant was declared an absconder.

In response to the query if the government had made any effort to verify the appellant’s medical condition in terms of the undertaking filed before the LHC, Deputy Attorney General Arshad Mehmood Kiyani asked for more time to obtain instructions from relevant quarters.

The bench recalled, “This court vide judgment dated October 29, 2019, had suspended the judgment handed down by the Accountability Court Islamabad, dated December 24, 2018 in NAB reference related to Al-Azizia Steel Mills and granted bail to the appellant for a period of eight weeks.”

Later, the Punjab government turned down the appellant’s request for extension of the suspension of sentence in view of his indisposition and hence the suspension and bail of Mr Sharif lapsed on February 27, 2020.

The court observed, “Admittedly, the appellant is not on bail and is also not present in the court but has made an application for exemption from appearance due to medical reasons. It is not out of place to observe that the appellant did not inform this court when he proceeded abroad or his name of 2019 was removed from the Exit Control List (ECL).”

The bench noted that the order passed by the LHC by removing appellant’s name from the ECL or permitting him to travel abroad had no bearing on the suspension order, as the appeal was being heard by the Islamabad High Court. “In the above backdrop and the interest of justice, we deem appropriate that an opportunity be granted to the appellant to appear before the court and surrender to the authorities before the next date of hearing failing which proceedings would be initiated against him in accordance with law including but not limited to the provisions of National Accountability Bureau Ordinance, 1999,” the court order stated.

The court later adjourned the hearing till September 10.

He thought he was gone foreever but even a court as corrupt as IHC found his contempt for them too much to stomach. On the other hand,I have a feeling in my water that this is a plan by the corrupt judges of IHC to overturn the sentences in the Al Azizia Reference and gave the duffer a free hand. In the end its going to be the SC that will have to decide one way or the other.

Unfortunately he still has plenty of support. He has built this image of being pro business and expert in development. He is known for his mega projects (and kickbacks on them as well) but his supporters say "Kuch khaata hai tou lagaata bhi hai (Even if he is a thief, at least he starts projects like motorways, bridges etc). His opponent has mostly been PPP (Benazir/Zardari) who are also known for corruption but no mega projects so bad option overall.
Now that Imran Khan is in picture who doesn't have corruption baggage and doesn't believe in short cuts, Sharif's supporters don't like him because he takes very hard stance against both Nawaz and Zardari so now fierce rivals have joined hands against Imran Khan because both their dynasties are in extreme danger of losing power.
Sharif has also built this new image that he is champion of democracy and all corruption cases against him are fake despite the fact that famous Panama leaks case had nothing to do with Army or even Pakistan for that matter and his supporters totally believe him because of Army's interference in Pakistani politics (Nawaz is probably biggest beneficiary of Army's interference as he was literally picked as a harmless person who had no ideology or personal achievement and his father was medium scale industrialist).

Nawaz urges IHC to ‘forgo’ requirement for his surrender in Al-Azizia reference

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday filed a review petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) stating that it was not possible for him to surrender in the Al-Azizia reference by September 10 (Thursday) and urged the court to forgo the requirement.

The petition was filed by Nawaz’s lawyer Khawaja Haris Ahmed who also submitted the former premier’s latest medical reports signed by Dr David Lawrence, a London-based consultant cardiothoracic surgeon.

Last week, the high court had directed Nawaz to appear before the court and surrender to the authorities by September 10 or face legal proceedings for absconding.

The bench had issued the directives during the hearing of appeals filed by Nawaz, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law retired captain Mohammad Safdar against their convictions in references filed by the National Accountability Bureau.

The former prime minister, his daughter and son-in-law were convicted in the Avenfield properties reference on July 6, 2018. Nawaz was also convicted in the Al-Azizia reference on Dec 24, 2018.

In the petition filed today, Nawaz’s lawyer said that the former premier was still unwell.

“The fact of the matter is that [Nawaz] is still suffering from multiple co-morbities [and] his treatment in London has been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“As a result, [Nawaz] has not been able to regain his health and all the doctors that have treated him in the past, as well as those who have been treating him since his arrival in London, have strongly advised him not to travel to Pakistan without getting his treatment done.”

The petition added that the PML-N supremo’s retun to Pakistan at this current time may even prove “fatal”.

It added that Nawaz’s inability to return to Pakistan was evident from all the medical reports that had been submitted with the application.

The petition stated that the purpose of hearing an appeal under Section 423 of the Code of Criminal Procedure was to decide the guilt or innocence of the appellant.

“But by no stretch of the imagination does the said provision of law insist upon the presence of the appellant before the court, even if such a presence would expose him to the risk of losing his life.”

Nawaz has repeatedly submitted that he is “ready and willing” to return to Pakistan and face the due process of the law and justice, the petition said, adding that it was only due to the advice of his doctors that he has been forced to delay his return.

The petition urged the court to forgo the requirement of Nawaz’s surrender.

Nawaz had left for London in November 2019 after the Lahore High Court granted him permission to go abroad for his treatment.

He had submitted an undertaking to the court citing his record of facing the law and justice that he would return within four weeks or as soon as he was declared healthy and fit to travel by doctors.

He was also given bail in the Al-Azizia Mills corruption case in which he was serving a seven-year prison sentence in Kot Lakhpat Jail, Lahore, before he left for London.

More humiliation for PTI and the cult-followers. Their propaganda has blown in their faces. First they did politicos on K. Nawaz and claimed that she was healthy before she succumbed to illness, and it looks like Nawaz will have to die for this shameless lot to acknowledge his condition.

If you think the above reports are forged, perhaps you and other cult-followers in England should file a lawsuit against the doctors who have published the reports. If they are found guilty, their licenses will be revoked immediately.

I know this first hand; Saanp had no disease. He would come to the hospital in Islamabad from jail with indigestion, rather he would run from the jail. I don't know what happened but this information before the drama of going to UK is 100% fact what I just wrote.

Decision of IHC, not a decision of PTI or IK.
PMLn, MNS and their supporters were champions of Judiciary when MNS staged this episode to flee away. And now refusing to accept the orders from same judiciary. PPP and PMLn has lost 40-50% of their voters in last 10-15 years because more and more people have realised the hypocrisies of these parties and will continue to lose more voters with behaviours like this.

btw, I have started to believe that MNS now actually wants to come back but he wants to create the perception where his comeback doesn't look like a victory of PTI.

Situation will change dramatically after Senate Elections and MNS has a window of 7 months till march 2021 to stage a come back.

Mark my words. Kutte kee tara against his wishes he will be dragged back to Pakistan

He is a British citizen as well. What does he do in office anyway?

When is he going to take challenge these doctors in court? Remember - you claimed that these are fake reports and the doctors have been paid.

So prove these claims in court. What is stopping you?

As a British citizen, do you not have the legal right to challenge a fellow British citizen to court?

He's suspect he's neither ignorant or stupid but just morally corrupt..

If he wasn't born into corruption and lived in the west you would suspect something very bad must have happened to him as a child to make the the way he is now.

You are also a British citizen. Why don’t you challenge these doctors in court?

I am talking about you, not the gutter-mouth PTI politicians sitting in Pakistan.

As a British citizen, you can challenge the claims of these doctors. And where is that champion of overseas Pakistanis Zulfi?

As i said you are either ignorant and stupid or just wasting everyones time. It really worries me that you claim to be a Doctor.

You sound rattled.

I asked you a simple question and you are doing aye baye shaye.

You accused the doctors of forging fake reports and taking bribe from Nawaz. So why don’t you prove your claims in court?

What worries me is that you don’t have the guts to put your money where your mouth is.

On what basis? Do you think NS will submit himself to be examined by anyone else, if so get in writing and i will do it.

This isn’t about Nawaz; this is about the credibility of the two doctors.

You wrote, and I quote:

“This report like all the reports from the crook is complete rubbish and paid for.“

You have accused Dr. Fayaz Shawl and Dr. David R Lawrence of the following:

(1) writing fake medical reports
(2) accepting bribe from Nawaz

If you weren’t hiding behind your computer and a username, these two doctors could actually take you to court under defamation (libel) law, and challenge you to prove that these reports are fake and that they have been bribed by Nawaz.

They did both, Doctors will write anything you want them to, I see teachers get fake medical certificates and take years off work . This whole thing is complete and utter rubbish and he is no more ill today than he was when he was PM.

Btw the Dr. David Lawrence is off Indian origin, he just has a white person's name and that fooled patwaris like [MENTION=131701]Mamoon[/MENTION]. Not surprised. Even a foreign education funded on corruption money cannot buy intelligence.

What is the relevance of his origin? He could be Indian, Pakistani, French or Japanese.

He is a qualified cardiothoracic surgeon.

Imagine a PTI cult-follower questioning someone’s intelligence.

As i said either your ignorant or stupid. You watched some Geo programmes, cried a lot along with Hamid Mir etc and accused IK of trying to kill NS. You then celebrated when he was released, totally wrongly by IHC and he came off the ECL. Then when you realised that the duffer had made a total idiot off you, you had a go at IK and said NS is walking free and all of its his fault. Then it gets better, he sends in some fake report and then you start to celebrate again. In all this, i said from the start that this is a crook that would sell his own mother, lying to save his backside is 2nd nature. The report is fake and he is no more ill today then when he PM, he needs to be in prison.

But I am sure that Zulfi guy has the resources. When will he prove to be useful? What does he even do as the champion of overseas Pakistanis?

If you think these reports are fake and the doctors were paid, why don’t you challenge them in court? Why don’t you expose them?

Why doesn’t Zulfi act?

Once again are you brain dead, how can i challenge a report from a Doctor for his patient? What are you a quack? Do you know anything about the law?

If you think he was bought and works for intelligence agencies, why don’t you take him to court?

Or do you want me to run with your assumptions and allegations that have resulted from the fact that you worship Imran?

Seriously, how dumb can one get?

Lol .... he is a heart surgeon but Nawaz ran away due to low platelet count. Him being of Indian origin does matter because of how Nawaz is an Indian agent. French or Japanese don't have stake in Pakistan.

Your corruption funded local or foreign education didn't teach you this?

You are a British citizen. You have the legal right to take a fellow British citizen to court if you think he is corrupt or has forged a fake report.

Writing a fake report and accepting bribe are legally recognized crimes. If you have proof for your allegations, you can have their licenses revoked.

So why don’t you act? What is the point of making allegations while hiding behind your computer?

As you are desperate to prove that he is ill, why hasnt he had treatment in the UK? What is he waiting for?

Mr. ignoramus,

He is a cardiothoracic surgeon. He is not a cardiologist.

Cardiothoracic refers to specialist of heart & lungs.

If you have low platelets you will be referred to a cardiothoracic specialist.

Seriously, how did you manage to get into McGill?

I heard you are doing masters in robotics. What are you making? Chaabi walay khilonay?

Your just getting desperate now. Your ignorance of the law is on par with your knowledge of medicine. Why has he had no treatment, he was supposed to be at deaths door, as i remember, 3 days to live :shh
Surely he needed treatment urgently. Are his Doctors trying to kill him? :ds

Didnt he have 3 days to live? Why did he go straight to hospital and get treatment. Remember last year he was given 6 weeks by the courts as medical bail and he ended up threatening THE CROOKED JUDGE.

for someone who lives in Canada, he should know better than anyone else that a large number of 3rd and 4th generation Indian Origin people live there. ANd while there parents or Grandparents came from India or West Indies, the 3rd or 4th generation identifies themselves as Canadians.

Infact there are Indian origin whose ancestors moved to Trinidad or Guyana first than moved to Canada.

Not every Indian origin person in the world has some kind of allegiance or acting as a spy for the Republic of India.

And as for the doctor part, again in Canada, especially in Toronto, your family doctor is more likely to be of Indian origin.

I graduated and now I'm building sonars for submarines for Lockheed Martin. Aur kuch?

My point still stands he deals with heart and lungs, but what does that have to do with platelet count??

He is a consultant btw.

100% sure you thought he was a white guy and not some Indian with dubious background.

Btw he has a 1 star rating on Google reviews. Granted just three reviews, but not a very good start :))

I certainly won't be taking my relatives here.

As a general rule, the Indians in the west are very right wing and hate Muslims and PK.

Probably the ones you came accross

The ones i came across in Canada never hated me for being Pakistani or even Muslim. Infact one of my science teachers, who was Indian origin, specially said eid mubarak to me. In Toronto, never faced any racism very multicultural.

On the face of it they are all lovey dovey. Scratch the surface and you will see.
