Nepal Gen Z protests, Nepal social media ban: This was the first time the youth of Nepal, the 'GenZ', mobilised on the streets like this. While the social media ban is the immediate trigger, unrest has been simmering in Nepal for a while now. We explain the full picture

Nepal Gen Z protest news: Fourteen people were killed in Nepal and many more injured after law enforcement agencies acted against protesters who had flooded the capital Kathmandu on Monday (September 8).

Thousands of young people, being termed ‘Gen Z protesters’, had gathered outside Parliament against the government’s ban on several social media platforms, with many in their school uniforms. Some entered the Parliament complex, after which the police baton-charged them. Large parts of Kathmandu are now under curfew.

This was the first time the youth of Nepal, the ‘GenZ’, mobilised on the streets like this. Organisers asked political parties and their youth wings to stay away.

While the social media ban is the immediate trigger, unrest has been simmering in Nepal for a while now.

The Nepal government last week banned 26 social media sites, including the Meta-owned Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, X, and YouTube, for not complying with an earlier order.

The Nepal government has sought to regulate big social media companies for more than a year, citing a rise in cyber crimes, fake news, and misleading content. Last month, armed with an order from Nepal’s top court, the government gave the companies a final deadline to register with the government, name a grievance handler, and agree to remove posts the government flagged. Those who did not register were banned.

Those who registered and escaped the ban are TikTok, Viber, WeTalk, Nimbuzz and Poppo Live, Reuters reported. TikTok had previously been banned in 2023 but allowed to resume after it reached an agreement with the government.

Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli on Sunday said his party was not against social media, “but what cannot be accepted is those doing business in Nepal, making money, and yet not complying with the law”, as quoted by PTI. The government has said the platforms can resume as soon as they comply with the orders.

Oli resigns to 'pave way for constitutional solution'

A statement signed by Prime Minister Oli states that he has resigned to pave a way for the constitutional solution of the current crisis.

There were angry protests since early in the morning in capital Kathmandu and across Nepal.

Residences of several high profile politicians were attacked and vandalised, including those belonging to Oli and Former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba. Political party headquarters were also targeted.

Mohan Regmi, the executive director of Civil Service Hospital, told the BBC that two individuals died during Tuesday’s protest. He said 90 are currently being treated at the hospital.

Nepal experienced what SL and Bangladesh experienced earlier. Massive protest and eventual resignation of the leader.

India need a similar protest to get rid of chaiwala. :inti

Prime Minister Oli was anti India...ever since he made the controversial comment that Lord Rama is from Nepal and not India. Good riddance.
He is factually correct but that doesn't make him anti India. You will find out what is anti India in next phase.

Thing is majority of Indians like PM Modi as their Prime Minister. In his 11th year as ruling, his popularity rating never went below 70% even now. So in this scenario he will not be removed by mere protests since counter protests will be 10 times louder in any such attempt. Its not as if these things were not been tried before - Farmer protest, Greta Thurnberg, Shaheen Bagh, Delhi Riots, Award Wapase, Rising Intolerance....every avenue has been tried.

Modi is still the PM. So deal with it. He will only go when he gets old enough to rule.

It is curious timing he has fallen before tour to India.
Yeah its alright he will comeback again, the cycle with Nepali leaders and he will probably blame India for this as the student leader(Balen Shah) is from a Pro Indian community.

Neither Indians nor Pakistanis(yes Bangladeshis too) understand the demographics and local politics of Nepal..
Irrespective Nepal will still do better life quality wise compared to other South Asian nations, as people don’t let corruptions become part.

All eyes on the mayor of Kathmandu, Balendra Shah who supported the student protests. A former rapper turned politician, he came into prominence in 2022 with 'Balen effect' on social media. .He met with the US ambassador in Feb 2024

Another Regime change by USA !!! :kp

Pro Indian regimes are falling like Dominos.
Do you even know he was the only PM who did not tour india during his tenure as PM

I know Pakistan peoples are delusional and Only spread fake propaganda from Pakistan Fake Propaganda factory but itne jyda honge ye bhi ni pta. 0 IQ

:klopp :kp
