What's new

New Zealand [284/4] beat India [280/8] by 6 wickets to win 1st ODI in Mumbai

You were still the runners up of the CT so maybe that no.1 ranking has merit :afridi

Not going by that. Because i think we were lucky not face one of OZ/NZ/ENG and were beaten by a rejuvenated Pakistan. And it's not just that. The team is simply lacking quality in batting.

Dhawan can still smash a few at the top and is class in ICC tournaments, Kohli is generally comes to the party and down the order there's Pandya. Jadhav seems like a decent talent as well, they all just need support and a long rope because consistency will come with more experience as well. The batting is not as strong as past teams because this is a new gen but overall the ODI team is in good health because there are guys who can bat, bowl and field

Pakistan would beat India right now in a 5 match odi series

Pak can beat India 3-2 if they play a 5 match series right now.

Our batting is pretty weak after the top 3. Way too many passengers in the team.

Dhoni, jadhav will never make it to my team.

Lol what a rubbish team this is. Honestly, us being the No.1 ODI team is a bit of a joke.

ITs like we fix one aspect, but the other breaks down.

Our bowling is finally looking formidable and we seem to have 1 decent AR, but now our batting looks weak.

Only Kohli and to an extent the openers look solid. Dhoni, Jhadhav and KArthik are just  And its not like we have an empty bench strength. There are at least 2-3 decent MO batsmen who should be given a chance.

uy to me is average

ur bowling still need a lot of work..this bunehwar guy is average, inida need another good left arm pacer to support bumra.

Kuldeep is still posing problems. Now he got the prize wicket. He bowled way too slow. He reached for it without any confidence.

K Williamson vs India in ODIs:
Home - 71, 77, 65, 60 & 88 (361 runs @72.20)
Away - 0, 13, 25, 29, 21, 3, 118, 22, 41, 27 & 6 (305 runs @27.72)
weakest of fab 4

Who would replace Dhoni in your team? Don't say Pant who couldn't even score against NZ A Team.

Replace Dhoni, jadhav with karthik and Rahul. Problem solved.

If Pant improves, he can replace karthik.

These kiwi players can't play spin to save their lives :)) and LOL at the car driving in-between two lanes

It might not be a great bowling line up, but it is good enough to win a significant number of games. If our batting can get improve by bringing in the players lie Pant and Shreyas, we will become a formidable team.

In fact, as a 5 man bowling line-up, it would be up there with the top line ups, pretty close to Pakistan, Australia and SA due to the variety we posses with our spinners. As for Bhuvi, he is doing his job. He is not a second coming of Akram, but makes the Indian attack an overall very strong unit.

Dropping dhoni ,lol. You think you can win a wc with youngsta beauties alone? You need experience down the order in pressure matches. But kedar yadav needs to go.
I will judge kuldeep and chahal based on their odi performances overseas, but looks very promising.

agreed but a top team should go from strenght to strength. and for that more variety is needed .like a left arm pacer with bumrah, this will be perfect and good bench strenghth in term of pace battery.dhoni.karthik and rehane should be dropped if india want to go to 2019 wc with a strong team..another left arm pacer and this bowling line up is one of the best in the world.impressed.

You are not going to win we when your no. 5 comes in and scores a 30 at 50 s/r.

Thats not going to happen every match.Without dhoni we have no experienced finisher.Too much pressure on Kohli.

Dhoni is an exceptional finisher? Is this 2011 or 2017?

Dhoni has not finished anything in a long life no time. Even if he is there, he relies on other lower order and tailenders to score.

Dhoni is a no.8 kind of batsman now.

who do you think would be able to replace Dhoni as a WK and score more than 50 S/R on this Pitch where even Kohli struggled initially.

Not just this pitch. Dhoni struggles every where irrespective of the pitch conditions.

I would try out a Samson or Karthik and give them a long run of about 10 od's to see how they perform. They cannot be worse than Dhoni.

If any, if someone like a Samson or Pant click, we will find a keeper for a decade to come.

Dhoni is likely to be retained till next WC.

He is playing from memory these days. Not a reliable player anymore. Probably on his last legs with flashes of brilliance while chasing smaller totals.

Dhoni saved our backside against SL in the recent ODIs and showed what a seasoned pro can do in a tough chase. Samson can't even score in Domestics and Pant bats like a deer in front of headlights against A team lallus. And their keeping is nowhere near Dhoni. Sure, they gonna do better than Dhoni. The only guy i can think of is Kartik but he also needs to do lot to prove that he is worthy.

If NZ play out the spinners then they will win.

The ball is turning but they played them well so far.

Which match was it? When did he save us?

The way NZ are batting, it shows India are short by about 30 runs. This is such a small ground. A push can get you a boundary.

Bit too early.

They've clearly planned for it. But even otherwise even when wickets were falling, they were scoring quickly enough at the start of the partnership.

They hve decided to avoid the Aussie error of just blocking till the run rate pressure goes up or they get out, and then next guy decides to block more because situation is bad etc.

Even if it gets close at the end, the tailenders slogging will be effective on the small ground. If there's dew even for last 10 overs it can be bad for us.

NZ better not mess it up from here.

They just need to carry on playing like this - rotate strike with the odd boundary.

So why is this a small ground? They could easily have pushed the boundary some metres back. This is not T20 so should have bigger boundaries.

Rohit Sharma would have been out twice against Southee if they had boundaries pulled back two metres.

The Second ODi to be specific when Dhananjaya ran through our top order.

Right, the one where BK of all the people dominated the partnership and outsocred Dhoni on his way to 50.

Thanks for the laughs. Dhoni concentrated on being not out while letting BK dominate the bowlers

Tom Latham looks a completely different batsman now from what we saw in the past. Very much impressed. His game against spin looked flawless and in complete control of his shots.

Dhoni' pathetic innngs coming back to bite us in the back.

That aside 280 should have been defended since the ball is spinning.

Kudos to NZ though for playing them better than most had expected.

As I have said many times, India lack strike pace bowlers with new ball and in middle overs..
Also Kohli just goes with pre match plan.. If things doesnt go according to plan, he is sort of clueless.

One of Bhuveshnar or Bumrah has to make way for a strike pace bowler...

Latham has played the spinners extremely well.

Indian and NZ commentators were saying this was a good score half way stage but now people saying 60 runs short.

There is no dew either so good score it was but spinners haven't bowled well enough on a wicket assisting them.

Latham reminds me of Gooch days. Entire chase was done with sweep shots with remarkable accuracy. Rock solid batting by Taylor/Latham. This is an absolutely terrific batting surface under lights. 280 is such a sorry *** total on any of the Mumbai ground.

Mumbai even Bangladesh can chase. Good batting surface. They kind banked on NZ collapsing against spin without putting up a fight. But Latham is a fine player of spin atleast on a decent batting wicket.

It was a good score, Kiwis bowled well and remember Kohli was dropped on 29, en easy catch, and went on to make a ton.

Latham and Tayloe has batted extremely well.

Exactly it was a good score plus the ball spinning for Indian spinners.

Fact is NZ have betted very well and spinners haven't taken the wickets they should have.

Can't blame Dhoni for this defeat.

Latham/Taylor played risk free cricket. They didn't have to play chancy cricket. Just sensible batting. Placing the ball in gaps rotating the strike. India will hope to chase in the remaining matches.

They actually have steel fencing behind which spectators are sitting. There actually is not enough room to push boundaries back even if they wanted to.

Congrats NZ. Well deserved win. Wake up call for India. They have to find a way to negotiate the left handers. He effectively nullified both the wrist spinners.

Who are saying 60 runs short now. Actually many didn’t expect NZL to compete and chase any total that was set giving their past history on playing spin. They didn’t expect NZL to get out of the spin web from kuldeep and chahal. And now shocked at what they see an exhibition of batting against spin from foreign batsmen especially Latham. What a master stroke to have him in the middle order.

There has been Dew not as much as was feared, I am sure Kohli opted to bat first as an experiment ,however Kiwis have batted beautifully and 340 is a par score here in Wankhede, Dhoni and Kartik will produce more such losses, just wait n watch. But for Bhivi, we would have been 80 short. The only way Dhoni can be dropped is if we lose 7-10 on the trot. Have been a great servant for Indian cricket but enough is enough

Latham is a fantastic find for them. Scored a 100 in the tour game, Now another 50 here handling spinners with ease.

Yup Wankeded is a belter of a wicket. Still remember Raina's 25 ball 87 runs here in the IPL semi. Cannot believe Dhoni had a strike rate of 59 on this ground.
