The BBC feed is up in arms with its usual duplicated disparaging tweetfest. Yes not a great dismissal but it was also quality psychological pressure bowling from Wagner.

Truth is Stokes played much better than anyone else, 66 runs off 190-odd balls and curbed his natural tendencies over a long period.

In these dire situations English teams need to realise you can’t just rely on one guy all the time (Gooch, Atherton, Pietersen, Cook, now Stokes, etc), it needs to be a magnificent team effort to even have a chance.

Big problems for England now. The CC is not producing players of sufficient quality or temperament to win tests.

England needs to find a quality left arm pacer and a hit the deck bowler like wegener to bring much needed variation in pace bowling department.

Stokes makes England look like a different team, and for that reason and others I think that England have a good chance of levelling in Test 2, but this was an excellent all-round performance from New Zealand whose Test lineup looks in as good a shape as it has done for many years. Congratulations to them on a fully deserved victory.
