New Zealand end Day 3 of the WTC final at 101/2 & trail India by 116 runs

I hate this game man.

Lose the toss and put in to bat in gloomy overcast conditions. Bat incredibly well to survive the day. The next day gets even gloomier. Inevitable happens against a class bowling attack.

And the fecking sun chooses to come out and say Hi just in time for the Kiwis to bat. Happens with us always in England. Always.

Jamieson is a freakish bowler

He will do well in all conditions like Mcgrath

Kohli needs to hand over the captaincy to Rahane if he's going to bring his rotten luck once again to England,

I actually think New Zealand should have batted. India’s openers have ensured that they are very much alive in this game - they were fantastic yesterday.

Expected india to be a bit more positive, day and a half to score 200 regardless of conditions, Nz have a big chance here if they can get 350.

Captain had too much faith in Rohit, Pujara, Pant and Rahane. :inti
When you play 5 bowlers on bowling surface like this one, 5th bowler tends to get underbowled, more often than not. Which makes this decision all the more foolhardy.

However would love to be proved wrong if 5th bowler wins us this test.

Yeah, you can attribute Kohli's dismissal to him going into his shell. Yesterday he was far more positive and results showed.

Great Match, evenly matched. Some great bat and bowl skills and top notch fielding by New Zealand.
Perfect advertisement for test cricket so far.

We lost our last 3 wickets in 4 balls. With a tail like this and questionable top and middle order, we made far more than we should have.

The match is still in balance.

India have managed to put up a competitive score for these conditions.

Won't be easy for NZ batters here....NZ might still rue wasting the new ball yesterday morning.

One major difference between India and NZ will be fielding and especially catching. Hopefully we won't drop catches like we did against Australia. :inti

With the test bowling form of Indian team, it is meant to be a fascinating contest under these conditions even with this 1st innings score on the board. However, it will be really unfortunate if weather/light doesn't allow for a result in this match.

The Test (test) has just begun. NZD will be in for a stern examination given IND’s experience.

The posters who are complaining of this being game over or nearly game over are either trying to engage in some juvenile reverse jinx to suppress their engagement.

NZD should not take anything for granted. IND have a lot of experience and discipline in their ranks. Not the same Ishant Sharma who was known for bowling a boundary ball every over. Jasprit has played a fair few games consistently. Shami has been around for a good many years.

If anything l, spotlight should be on Pant’s keeping and IND’s slips cordon. Not so worried about their bowling not being good enough.

Bowl first was the correct decision. The kiwi bowlers just didn't get their line right yesterday, except maybe Jamieson. Both the openers and Kohli also batted very well yesterday. The kiwi bowlers got their line right today and the results showed.

On an another day, if the kiwi bowlers were on their A game or if the Indian batsmen were a bit loose with their shot selection, they could have got bowled out for 150 yesterday.

Interested to see if Pant has made improvements to his wicketkeeping. Its gona be tough with the ball moving all over and byes could be crucial.

Yes that would be really important.

Slip catching in overseas conditions often gets under the radar when the difficulties related to certain conditions are talked about but, actually slip catching dynamics also change big time in different conditions. From varying height you get the ball at to the late movement, slip catching can always get a bit tricky for the visiting teams in foreign conditions and that can obviously impact the results as well.

What sticks out is the way the MO threw away their wickets...
Rahane' s dismissal was brain dead- he did the hard work, will take 49 on that wicket, in these conditions, against that quality attack...but the way he got out....was cringe...
Ashwin - was looking in good rhythm, was middling it...got carried away and gifted his wicket
Pant-could have well left that ball...
Dont know why Jazz boom was sent above shami who i feel is a better bat amongst the two
Jads got out to a pathetic ball....
The only upshot is India are traditionally pathetic starters and take time to get heated....i'd back our guys to put a better show in the 2nd dig...

True. No way we should have been scoring anything less than 300. Quite a few got out on nothing deliveries.

Jadeja is a serial under achiever.

Half the game rained out yesterday and the wicket is so difficult to bat on, so that score of 200+ is misleading. I would say India survived somehow to drag it into this late in the day.

NZ has bowled well and fielded brilliantly. Would be interesting to see if they can bat well too.

Fans were looking upto Pujara and Rahane as replacements of Dravid and Laxman respectively. They didn't live upto that expectations. :inti

Their batting merits demerits and comparisons apart...Jinks is an awesome catcher all round the wicket as well as slips....he's surely replaced Dravid in that regard...I feel that aspect of his is vastly under rated....he stays low and pouches some extremely difficult catches and makes them look easy...i'd put my neck out to say he's a candidate to take the max catches in tests,....provided his batting form holds and he plays that long...

Bumrah generates so much pace from a spinners run up....

Amazing

If am not wrong VK has lost 6 straight tosses in England....would that be a record of sorts?

Yee I agree, however I think the way jadeja played in comparison to the way ashwin played lost them atleast 20 30 extra quick runs which could have put them in a much better position. Will be interesting to see how nz approach this.

Bumrah bowling at 146kph. I think he needs to reduce his pace a bit and concentrate on getting his seam position perfect.

The ball often swings more at around 130-135kph. All the kiwi bowlers bowled in that range.

Run-up can be overweighted at times, but yes depends on the bowler. Not sure when you started watching but if you watched 90s and earlier, remember WA’s shorter run-up delivery? Often quicker than his deliveries with his full run up.

I was firmly in the Woolmer camp when it came to Akhtar’s run-up being reduced too.

Conway likes to feel the ball off the bat. He will give a chance to the slips at some point.

A fit Bhuvi would have been a treat in these conditions. We could have played him instead of Ashwin, that means going with four pacers and his batting is good enough for no.8. But he was not even selected in the squad probably because he lacks the fitness.

Rahane played a few pull shots in the air on the first day of play too. Surprising he does not roll his wrists on this shot.

In the end, was a nothing ‘bunt’ to square leg.

Has never built upon his entry to international cricket in that SAF series of 12/13.

Average Swing in this Test, Overs 1-5:

NZ - 2.07°
India - 0.67°

Massive difference.

India needed at least 250 runs on this surface to set the tone of the game.

New Zealand should back themselves to make about 300 if the pitch starts becoming flat. The key for New Zealand will be to attack and apply pressure on India's spinners. If they can do that, it will help them post a large total.

To be fair, they are a better, more well rounded side than we are in these conditions. They just beat England in England. I dont think it would have made any difference. They swing the ball more than any other attack and they have an X factor bowler in KJ who can take pitch out of the equation with lift and seam movement.

Guys, question? Is this test going to have the typical 5 days or will it get extension due to rain?

There is very little to no seam movement on offer.
Just lots of swing.

Do Ishant and Bumrah rely more on seam than swing?

Also if the weather had been warm and sunny then this would have been a 500 run track

Yes.

We have bowled poorly so far especially considering the conditions.

The only genuine swing bowler in India is Bhuvi. Ishant has turned into a swing bowler late in his career. Shami and Bumrah seam bowlers.

This reminds me of India in New Zealand 2020. The only difference is that we have better opening batsman this time compared to what we had in that series. Don't think it is enough to overturn the result of the game though.

Where is the sun? In general yes in England sometime the advantage is not on your control and one reason why I think England is one team who has to rely on luck to have total home advantage.

As always in England the match starts when to second innings begins. India score is not as bad as some people here think. NZ didnt bowl that well on the first day and its only really jameison who has done the damage. Southee in particular did not have a good game so far.

I think they could've pitched it up a little more.

They have hit a good length more often than NZ quicks did. NZ just have the best swing bowlers. They made Jimmy look a gun barrel straight trundler even with the Dukes. That's how much their bowlers can swing it.

The sun came out for about 15 minutes or so and has taken cover once again. Hopefully remains so.

I agree.
I thought anything around 220 would be extremely competitive.

Also the batting sides can't score quickly enough on this wicket so the fielding sides can maintain control somewhat
