What's new

New Zealand end Day 3 of the WTC final at 101/2 & trail India by 116 runs

They have hit a good length more often than NZ quicks did. NZ just have the best swing bowlers. They made Jimmy look a gun barrel straight trundler even with the Dukes. That's how much their bowlers can swing it.
This is true. There isn't a better swing bowling attack in world than Kiwi one.

The sun came out for about 15 minutes or so and has taken cover once again. Hopefully remains so.

I agree.
I thought anything around 220 would be extremely competitive.

Also the batting sides can't score quickly enough on this wicket so the fielding sides can maintain control somewhat

The difference so far is Jameison, The wickets will fall for NZ as well.. Batsmen are never in when its voer cast in England like that. The pitch actually is a batting wicket with plenty of runs if it was played on sunnier days.

Now shami bowling too short...

You can see all three bowlers getting some swing but they bowling too short...

I think it's pretty obvious.

It's not so much about the degree of swing you get. It's the lengths you hit.
Only has to move marginally to take the edge

To be fair, they are a better, more well rounded side than we are in these conditions. They just beat England in England. I dont think it would have made any difference. They swing the ball more than any other attack and they have an X factor bowler in KJ who can take pitch out of the equation with lift and seam movement.

They did beat England in the last series. But I wouldn't take much stock into the series. That England side that comprehensively lost is not the same side we are going to face in a month.

But yeah this is perfect conditions for their pitch up swing bowlers. People often make a lot about the physical attributes of Jamieson but his real strength is his bowling intelligence. He pitches it up more fuller than even Southee and Boult. I do want to see how he goes in the subcontinent though. You cannot take the pitch out of the equation with lift and seam movement because both factors are pitch dependent factors. On a very flat wicket, you won't get much lift and seam movement no matter how hard you try.

It has been a terrific display of batting Vs swing bowling in overcast conditions by Kohli till now. If he can make this inning count, it will go down as his greatest test knock of all-time.

We are witnessing one of the greatest test knock of all-time if he can convert this 40 to 100. He looked completely unfazed yesterday, batting like the greatest batsman ever does in overcast conditions Vs high quality swing bowling.

How are you doing today sir ?

I would disagree with that. His physical attributes have a lot to with his success. In this match alone, he got 50 % more seam movement than any of the other Kiwi bowlers and from a good length, he was hitting the bat a little more than 3 inches higher than any other Kiwi bowler. Thise are significant differences imo. And that's why he was the biggest threat. The extra bounce means hes harder to score off and the extra movement makes him a greater wicket taking threat.

This wicket is not flat though. It has got decent bounce and carry. Southee and Boult are floaty bowlers which is why they often become less potent in flat conditions. Jamieson can use his height when he wants and hit the seam harder.

My point is that on a bouncier wicket, the difference between the bounce generated by various bowlers might be greater than on a very flat wicket when the difference might not be that great and the wicket is just unresponsive.

That's more likeable.

It was a good knock if you watched his batting yesterday. He didn't batted as good in Edgabaston in 2018 as he did yesterday.

Starts are good if you make them count

The irony with all the movement and swing in the air bounce done the trick for nz, looks like India is trying to replicate this but because the bowlers aren’t tall enough they are just bowling too short.

India only bowled 10 % short deliveries in the first 10 overs. People going on about us bowling too short :facepalm

NZ batsman are ultra-defensive. They will probably be happy with a draw.

We're not talking about short deliveries.
We're saying the length has been a bit too short for the conditions.

There is short, good length and full deliveries.
The Indian bowlers haven't bowled enough deliveries between the good length and full length.
In swinging conditions you need to be pitching it right up.

In these conditions you want the batsmen hitting you through cover and extra...
Doesn't matter if you get hit for a few fours

Good length is not good enough here....need to pitch it up.

You've got to get the batsman driving to bring the slips in play.

Good length bowling makes for good viewing on TV for oohs and aahs.

India have been a bit short so far but so was NZ early on. I dont think India needed Jadeja in this test match unless he is playing as an extra batsman which he might be. Siraj could have played instead.

India dont have a fast bowling all rounder like faheem zulu in tests. One spinner was enough in this test

Rishav Pant catches a regulation ball.
DK: "Absolutely brilliant, amazing take by Rishav, he's the most improved keeper of the last one year"
Why do all indian commentators have to be cheerleaders??

The usual story with Shami. He bowled well in the pink test in Australia 2020 also but with zero success.

It's too much isn't it?? I also laughed out loud at that. Dk has been horrible on commentary.

Also wheres the jadeja brigade who were telling me that he's a better batsman than Williamson??

I'm enjoying both Bish and Athers taking DK to the cleaners about his claim "Shami is just unlucky"....Athers "He has played 9 tests though" and Bish "He has to figure out why he's unlucky and bowl better"

Haha this isn't a bcci run event dear DK.

Sometimes he's just too good to get the edge. Should he cut down speed a bit & operate under 135 to get that edge? I remember an Interview of Mcgrath where he said that he could bowl 135+ but chose to bowl below 135 to get those near misses as outside edges.

Indian fans were calling Pakistan bowlers trundles.Nadeem,Dhani,Hasnain & Rauf bowl 145+.Bumrah is 140.I am talking about speeds not skill levels.

India have an experienced bowling up line up but only Shami has looked threatening so far. I still expect India to make NZ batsmen struggle for runs unless NZ get a good platform from the openers.

DK has been jarring on the comms box, I made a similar point yesterday and there was a lot of unhappy posters in this thread, but my opinion still stands, he asks too many pointless questions and is trying to hard to over analyse everything.

Agree with this. DK looks like a complete wannabe in commentary box, just like his on field persona, tries to act like he is worth million dollars but in reality, he is nothing.

Yeah, Bumrah has disappointed the most. He has been off the boil for quite some time now.

It's swing away from him after ball passes the stumps.. So it's a good take TBH..

Most of his observations are being politely ignored by both Atherton & Bishop.

Very disappointing session from Indian bowlers pov.

They should have bowled much fuller. Bumrah's good length 140k bowling will not be as potent in english conditions as bowling fuller even if a bit slower would be.

Yeah, Bumrah has disappointed the most. He has been off the boil for quite some time now.

Bumrah requires pace n bounce to succeed. He's not very skillful in swing n seam. English pitches are damp especially this one. He hits the deck doesnt float it

No improvement from India tour of New Zealand 2020. Same old stuff, if New Zealand bat well in final session, they will be 130-1 at stumps.

India have been a bit unlucky.
Thakur would ve been a better choice instead of ashwin. There is no turn on this pitch so far.

Just like how Shami is unlucky, Thakur is extremely lucky. He would have probably got a wicket by now bowling one down the leg and clipping the bat to the keeper.

This is the first time since 2013 in Tests in England, openers from both teams have managed to survive the first 20 overs of their respective first innings.

Rohit - Gill (20.1 overs)
Latham - Conway (21* overs)

NZ 43/0 (22.4) CRR: 1.9
Day 3: 3rd Session - New Zealand trail by 174 runs

Good going by New Zealand but I feel a collapse coming any moment now....

Yeah, he is pretty harmless on damp pitches.

Shows how average England's openers have been, including Cook.

Bumrah has been poor in this innings, hardly created any chance whatsoever.

If Latham and Elgar can average 40 in tests and sooner Conway (with decent samples), then why can't England produce a 40 averaging opening batsman?

Right, because they'll all bowl at an average of145+ in test cricket.

Watch some more test cricket, son.
