If India cross 400, it should become very difficult for New Zealand.

New Zealand need a few early wickets.

IND 280/5 (89.3) CRR: 3.13

India still looking set for 400

No idea how they are playing in such haze.

Will there be a century on debut for Iyer? It's been quite a while since an Indian batsman did that.

Don't know why do we even bother with this Saha guy. He is epitome of mediocrity.

Debutant Iyer putting Jamieson in place. What a player this lad is! Wonder how many other such talented cricketers are waiting in the wing without opportunities in India. The day useless seniors get kicked out of this team, Indian batting will see a new revolution.

IND 290/6 (92.3) CRR: 3.14

Shreyas Iyer debut century:

- 16th Indian player on debut
- 3rd Indian on debut vs NZ
- Third oldest (26y 355d)
- Joint fourth fastest (where balls faced details available)
- Joint fourth fastest for India (where balls faced details available)

Iyer's innings also shows how useless is this decision to persevere with duds like Rahane and Pujara even for a single test. They are so past it for years now.

A debutant like Iyer has shown far more composure than Saha who is generally deemed as a safe batsman.

Reckon the convo might be in Tamil between Ashwin and Shreyas :)...Go Tamil Lions!
On another front - I guess when you get a chance and grab it with both hands, u chart your own course...
Just feel for poor Vihari who could have been so easily been here...
Southee's bowled reall well, Jamieson is a Star.
Their spin is not so good.

Southee has bowled unchanged since play started today.

Another example why pace bowlers are also equally important in Indian test matches! NZ seem to be a better test team now who have players (at least bowlers) for all conditions! But somehow they are not taken seriously like England & Australia probably for economy reasons! India should be playing their best team against them to be safe...

India have got 330 runs, I guess that is a good score by a team that is missing 4-5 players.

Is it always this hazy all over north India (and I guess Pakistan Punjab as well) during winters?

It's seems very ugly to watch the action. The smog is over the roof.

Looks like the morning phase of play has something in for pacers, India has lost wickets during that time

I don't mind rahane being dropped when kohli comes in.. but I guess it won't happen and shreyas might have to wait a bit longer

Not the easiest of wickets but still NZL have come back well here, 345 all out is probably 50-60 less than what india would have expected today morning.

Brilliant century on debut for Shreyas Iyer and Superb bowling by Southee, 5 wicket haul in India for a pace bowler is always appretiated.

345 AO - expected 400 at least.

Lets see if NZ make a meal of this or not.

Correct, they need to move down to south during winter and schedule in North during summer (including beautiful Dharmashala)

Ashwin and Jadeja with useful partnerships with bat but extremely disappointing from Pujara and Rahane.

If not for Iyer's hundred, we would have been bundled under 250.

23 for no loss, solid reply thus far.

Could be a good Test match brewing here.

If NZ can bat sensibly (around Williamson) they have the bowling to upset India! They can surprise the whole world doing this and BCCI will be embarrassed to pick a weakened team against them (Rohit, Pant).

If these two play, we will likely lose there as well.

They both deceived us with that famous Australian tour with those two innings... Unfortunately it will be difficult for the management to oversee it without being emotional!

Rohit & Pant could have easily been rested for the T20s... Heck we didn't even need that series... Instead of that a few days rest & an additional test would have been better. This NZ team definitely deserves a 3 match test series. But unfortunately BCCI wanted to make some quick money after a crowd-less IPL...

IND 345
NZ 68/0 (25.4) CRR: 2.65
Day 2: 2nd Session - New Zealand trail by 277 runs

IND 345
NZ 72/0 (26) CRR: 2.77
Day 2: Tea Break - New Zealand trail by 273 runs

India legit on the back foot a bit here. Boundaries being creamed now

To be honest I want India to lose this series! (A home series loss after a long time). This is perhaps the only way we can get rid of non-performing players and see a huge change in our test batting! I don't mind losing this series (breaking the streak, fortress whatever...) if it helps win when we play in South Africa, New Zealand... Also we should have long test series with NZ, they are doing much better than England & Australian teams...

I reckon we're in for something big here.

Kiwis to win their first test in India since 1988.

Lol.Its just a matter of time.Latham already got lucy two times.

Not sure what you mean by this. No dropped chances, no umpires calls going his way. Yes he was given out incorrectly twice, but that's more bad luck than anything.

Solid job by NZ
Will young looks so assured.
our guys have to be patient and focucced
the wicket rush will come

First 100+ opening partnership for a visiting team in India since 103 by Alastair Cook & Haseeb Hameed in Chennai in Dec 2016

Not gonna happen, they have to bat last here.

Even 150 will be tough to chase

Yeah, NZ will need at least a 100 run lead. They've started well but 450 against this spin attack would be a huge ask.

NZ are so far playing like World (Test) Champions!

I do not understand, how can BCCI let their main players of this test against a World Champion. Even a draw in home condition, may come back to bite later on this WTC.

India is on backfoot here but I still think india will win the test.
It's all IPL's fault. indian main players are resting due to IPL.

It's been a great day of test cricket, very much attritional cricket. Only 220 runs scored in day and NZ trying to assert their position but only slightly ahead. Exciting play to look for tomorrow

New Zealand and Bangladesh, the underdogs putting up a fight against India and Pakistan respectively is just what test cricket needed. At a time when competition is at an all time low.

NZ are playing well here. Nz are current world test champions and #1 in ranking and u calling underdogs. They need to do well in India otherwise they don't hold credibility as best team

it seems the pitches are flatter in the winter in india.

it may break up on day 4 fand 5 to allow india to bowl nz out in the 4th innings

Really enjoyed watching that. Not going to sell out any stadiums, but an absorbing day for the purists.

New Zealand probably think they're on another planet lol, but they've done alright so far.

Can't rule out a collapse tomorrow though.

NZ have had a great start but there's 200+ runs to reach parity and the middle order is weak and once psin becomes a factor, the pitch breaks up, they will be in serious trouble. I expect NZ all out by 250 and India to gain another lead of 300+.

Iyer was special in his innings, composed, gritty, skilled, exactly what we need from our newer batters!

Won’t be surprised if kiwis get bundled out for 200 from here happens way too many times to teams touring India they think they’ve gotten a good start and they are in the game but they never really are.

You're quite right.

NZ need to bat the third day really, or India will always be on the verge of coming back into the game.
