Rutherford joins other NZ greats such as Sinclair, Lou Vincent & Scott Styris to have scored a ton on debut, don't think he'll have a bright future :D

Doesn't help that our field placings are poor and everything catchable is dropped.

Wonderful display by the Black Caps, they cannot let this match slip by though. Hamish needs to stay aggressive and Williamson should do the same after getting settled.

As much as I like Finn, he is not the second coming of Trueman/McGrath, whatever. He's a good English bowler, who bowls at 145, while our other two bowl at 140. He's talented, but we look at that as proof that he will be one of the best, while hardly seeing him tear up the scene.

Rutherford slashes a bit too hard wide outside off stump. If he manages to control that, all other aspects look pretty good. But it's early days. :umarakmal

Bats a lot like Strauss. Might have same weaknesses too. Hangs back a bit too much for my liking and could keep the slips busy if the bowlers find the right lengths. But got to give it to him for his temperament.

Wish Jesse Ryder was here, would have juiced a quick-fire 200 out of these bowlers on that track. :rondu

Bruce martin got 4 wickets on debut? Wow.. England's left arm spin weakness continues :jadeja :rehman :herath

LOL Jimmy getting schooled by Rutherford...

64.4 Anderson to Rutherford, FOUR, goes fuller and straighter and Rutherford whips him past midwicket, well placed between him and mid on, but once more, it was right out of the screws

64.3 Anderson to Rutherford, 2 runs, again driven with good timing, a square drive this time and Compton fumbles at deep point so they get two

200 up...

64.2 Anderson to Rutherford, FOUR, four more, taken from outside off and guided behind square on the off side, timing again spot on

64.1 Anderson to Rutherford, FOUR, length just outside off, Rutherford drives powerfully again and gets four more past extra cover, it was in the air for a while but again the timing, spot on

Monty bowling like an Indian fast bowler now.

Rutherford was looking REALLY awkward during the ODI series... wasn't playing his shots nor rotating the strike in fact couldn't get bat on ball tbh, looks totally different here... and seeing the gulf between his FC and List A averages (even if not huge sample), I guess he prefers the longer format.

It's interesting because his FC strike rate is higher than his list A strike rate. His t20 stats are good too so I guess he just prefers when the captain gives him a clear message of 'you've got plenty of time to bat' or 'you've got hardly any time to bat'.

Hamish looks like a class player, very impressed with him so far.

so how much are england going to lose by? i bet an innings and 32 runs.

hopefully the next two tracks will be roads too :p

England will win this test, NZ will be bowled out for 300, England will score 400 in their 2nd innings and then roll NZ for 44. :boycott

Ross taylor batting on birthday, remember what happened on his birthday 2 years ago :akhtar

oh no Williamson gone.

My man Taylor on the crease. :akhtar

Go get 'em :viv

Rutherford on 166, about to go ahead of the unibrow beauty :fawad (168) into top 10 of HS on Test debut.

Great stuff from Rutherford and even Fulton. Comebacks can be a real pain in the neck :afridi

Rosco needs to hang on there and build a lead of 300+.

Score 200/220 more runs in the next 50 overs, put England in to bat with 10/ 12 overs left in the day.

Holy cow at Yasir hameed, didn't expect him and Fawad Alam to be up there. lol at rudolph, 200 against Bangladesh

lol Yasir Hameed too bullied the Bangladeshis. :shakib

I didn't know about Khalid Ibadulla at all but interestingly he not only played lot of county cricket for Warwickshire but was involved heavily in NZ cricket as a coach too...

MCCULLUM-TAYLOR-caps-500.jpg

Billy Ibadulla was invited by the BLACKCAPS to hand out the caps on the eve of the first Test against South Africa at University Oval in Dunedin.

The former Pakistan and Otago described it as a ‘huge honour’ that ranked alongside his queen’s birthday honour and book dedication by Glenn Turner.

Khalid “Billy” Ibadulla
Billy played four Test matches for Pakistan in the 1960’s before a long career with Warwickshire and short stints with Otago and Tasmania. In a First-Class career spanning 18 years he struck 17,078 runs and claimed 462 wickets. Billy moved to New Zealand in 1976 where he became heavily involved in coaching, including working with the likes of Glenn Turner, Ken Rutherford, Chris Cairns and more recently Brendon McCullum.

Talk of coincidence, Rutherford just got ahead of the man who worked with his father. :danish

Who do you think our great Yasir scored those tons against? Fawad scored 168 on a flat deck but at least he had to face some quality bowling from the SL spinners.

Some serious minnow bashing on that list, atleast Rutherford can claim he has scored his runs against a decent bowling lineup

Fawad didn't score on the flat deck. Check the scorecard for that match. Just because the match was played in asia doesn't mean it was a flat pitch.

I think Kuruppu is the most impressive since SL were minnows those days, I think it was in Lords against England not sure.

Greatness was firmly thrust upon Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-opener Brendon Kuruppu, but only for a day or two, as he became only the third person to score a double-century on his Test debut, against New Zealand - Richard Hadlee and all - in Colombo. Kuruppu did it the hard way too: his 777-minute innings is the slowest double-hundred in first-class history, all very out of character for a man who later made his reputation as a one-day slogger. It was his first first-class century, and his last Test century: Kuruppu only played four Tests, two of them in England, in 1988 and 1991.

:hadlee

LOL 777 minutes, he tuk-tuked the brain out of the NZ bowlers. :misbah

How strange, this game is still going on. You'd think the mercy rule would have been implemented already.

80.1 Anderson to Rutherford, OUT, and it does the trick straight away as Rutherford chips a catch to midwicket ending a wonderful debut innings. It was an innocuous length ball on leg stump that he went to turn into the leg side but it seemed to stop on him a little and he popped up an easy chance straight to the fielder

HD Rutherford c sub b Anderson 171 (217b 22x4 3x6) SR: 78.80

Wanted a double ton. :(
