After England elected to bat first on a sunny morning at Leeds, Imran Khan didn't take long to hit his stride, demolishing the English top order with a hostile display of pace and swing bowling. He took 3-37, while Wasim Akram and Mohsin Kamal took 3 wickets each, accounting for England's middle order and tail as England were bundled out for 136.

In response, Pakistan piled on a healthy lead of 217, making 353 courtesy of 99 from Saleem Malik and important lower order contributions from Ijaz Ahmed and Wasim Akram.

The third innings saw Imran Khan run riot as he first got the wickets of England's top 4, including David Gower who made 55 and then picked up 3 more wickets, including the final wicket to end with innings figures of 7-40 and match figures of 10-77. His dominance with the ball ensured that England could only score 199 and were comprehensively routed by an innings and 18 runs.

Neil Foster got at eightfer in that match. It was played at the same time as I graduated. I had sunburn across my shoulders, as I recall.

Guess this is the day when I mean solidified his legendary status.

No, it was the 1982-83 series vs India where he took 40 wickets in 6 Tests. One of the greatest - if not the greatest - bowling performances in history.

An inspirational cricketer, a leader, a man who inspired generations of pace-bowlers.

I remember Edmonds - who else? - getting Salim Malik out on 99.

That England team was not very good. No Gooch and a rather defensive top order. Botham was spent as a test player by then, he should have been playing ODIs only.

The 1987 England side was still less past it compared to the 1992 side

imran showing what a world class player he was. Saleem malik played a brilliant knock in tough conditions and he did well as same venue in 92 aswell.

Wasim may have been our best overall bowler but in tests alone Imran is number one a thoroughly underrated bowler!

Add to that his global stardom which even the likes of Kohli and Sachin could not command what a sporting icon he was for us.
