Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat scoring 290 in their allotted 50 overs with Salim Elahi and Mohammad Yousuf (then Yousuf Youhana) leading the scorecard with 79 and 44 respectively.

However, the real highlight of the match was watching an in form Waqar Younis who had recently taken 7 wickets against England. He continued where he left off picking up 6 wickets in the innings and becoming the sole reason for Australia registering their only defeat in that tournament.

In his very first over, Waqar Younis got the prize wickets of Mark Waugh and Matthew Hayden. A few overs later, he dismissed Michael Bevan to leave Australia at 35/3. Although Australia kept up with the scoring rate, they kept losing wickets at regular interval. Coming back into the attack, Waqar Younis got the prize wickets of Steve Waugh and Andrew Symonds in the same over and helped Pakistan seal the match comfortably in the end by 36 runs.

Commentary on Waqar's six wickets.

1.1 to ME Waugh, coming forward takes a thick edge taken low in the right hand by the keeper in front of first slip 5/1
1.6 to Hayden, coming forward driving takes the toe confusion on wether caught behind or lbw 6/2
5.3 to Bevan, a loose drive from bevan loses the bottom hand beaten by a good ball coming back takes the inside edge onto the stumps 35/3
31.2 to SR Waugh, comes down trying to drive ends up chipping it very high to mid off where saqlain takes a good over head catch moving back 190/6
31.5 to Symonds, flicked in the air juggled a half dozen times by the sub in the deep at square leg 190/7
37.3 to Lee, trying a similar shot misses the line knocks off stump out of the ground 208/8

Ahhh, The good old days.

Wish I was old enough to witness that and to know what cricket was :))

The ball that got Bevan was a gem but he was batting a bit to high in the order seeing as he was known for his finishing.

To think this was Waqar 10 years past his very best!!

The turning point was Saqlain's dismissal of Gilchrist. Gilly had smashed everyone including Waqar. He was looking absolutely murderous that day.

IF This is Waqar of 2001 then what the heck was Waqar of pre injury

The greatest fast bowler of all time. Was the world's number one bowler from 1991 to 1996. These 5 years alone cemented his place as the greatest of all time. Nobody came or has come close since.

Had 3 serious injuries which reduced his pace and forced him to change his action a bit in the later years.

Was still recording speeds of 90 to 92 mph in 1996 and 1997.

After another injury reduced his pace in order to prolong his career and became a very clever new ball bowler operating at 84 to 88 mph from late 1998 to 2000 and performed very well.

Then from 2001 until retirement was operating at 83mph to 86mph (odd ball in high 80s) and gave several man of the match performances such as the ones in England 2001.

Will go down as one of the all time World Greats.

Could do with some Waqar style performances now by the Pakistani team.

I remember this series! Pakistan was on fire during this series. Saeed Anwar and Waqar did really well.

It is sad that current Pakistan team is nowhere near this legendary team.

The Waqar dismissal of Michael Bevan and Saqlain's doosra to Damien Martyn remains inprinted in my head.

Sadly the final was an action replay of the 99 final.

Waqar was imperious in that series. I think we were dismissed for around 150 in the final.

The biggest strength of Waqar lies in attacking spirit. He was always looking for wicket even if it meant going for runs. Its a big reason of his low SR and high Eco.

Of all the 26 bowlers with atleast 250 ODI wickets

And he's an excellent bowling coach as well.

We're stuck with Azhar Mahmood the trundler.

IF This is Waqar of 2001 then what the heck was Waqar of pre injury

Good old days. Also mauled England for his career best figures in the same series. By then Waqar was all about intelligence and exploiting the conditions as he had lost most of his pace. But early Waqar was definitely in a league of his own. Never seen another of his kind. Could be a bit expensive at times but the days he clicked were unforgettable. One can only wonder what he could've achieved without injuries and his fued with Wasim (also cost Wasim but Waqar suffered more).
