I am not putting him higher because of this 170 but he is really underrated...When he came to intentional scene he had 6 centuries in less thn 35 ODI's he played...I know he lost the rhythm later and performed in patches...He scored 5 centuries in 2006..And 4 centuries in 2011...They guy deserve a bit more respect...
 
Suresh Raina is really overrated player the guy played 167 ODI's scoring 3 centuries and those 3 came against Hong Kong, Bangladesh & Lanka...

While I respect one's entitled to an opinion, but not whim.. saying anything which you like..

Can you point one area of performance where Sachin is rated more than he deserves ? Would like to know that.

I think we need to define what the term overrated means ? He is not called best in India or anything like that.. he is a useful lower order batsman (centuries for 6-7th position are rare).. In WC 2011, he was the primary reason of our QF and SF victories (well one of the primary reasons).. certainly can't call him overrated..

The England series both home and away he was quite poor and also he didn't do wonders lately, averaging quite low this year. He needs to be dropped as India has better replacements, if Gambhir and Sewag can be kicked out why isn't the same medicine being applied for God. He is a quality batsman no doubt, but don't like his fans, giving him god status and Sachin worshiping is just beyond pathetic.

Yes, he was rubbish after WC2011.. well not rubbish but by his own standards, not performed well.. he scored a 94 in oval and 80-odd in Sydney.. that ridiculous 100th 100 was going on in his mind..

Anyway, are you calling him overrated on recent performance ? Nobody is appreciating his recent performance .. so not sure what you mean. If you are calling him overrated based on his overall performance in career, then i would like to know where is he overrated.

No one should be called God, but if some fans call someone that, does it mean he is overrated ?

But again while batting between number 3-5 he played 83 matches and doesn't look better.

I think his current role in ODIs is to come at 6-7 and score quickly.. which more or less he is able to do.. he is no Bevan though.. so yes, you can call him not-great.. but then he is rated with not-so-high praise also..

His WC QF/SF innings were the reason why India could sail through.. that talks about character and that is more imp than average.

Yea i agree with your point i am not talking about here at PP but i have seen the hype about raina on internet and in media...I personally rate Rohit higher thn Raina...

what is your "yes" for.. people/fans calling him God means he is overrated ? Or he is overrated anyway ?

He should have been dropped. He went to selectors saying he was not getting runs and it's their call now.. they gave him another chance... may be because of his overall reputation.

The point is not about his current performance.. I am asking is he overrated as an overall career ? Even Viv performed poorly in his twilight.. but do we call Viv overrated ?

Let us answer the right question.. do you feel he is overrated in terms of his place in the history is more than what he has done ? Let us not talk about his current performance which is anyway droppable.

Rohit is more "talented".. but is given so many chances.. he is so casual .. I feel Raina loses his wicket because of his inability to play certain deliveries.. Rohit does that coz may be he doesn't feel like playing.

Just look at Rohit's dismissals, in CT SF/final..

Rohit situation is similar to U Akmal they both do stupid things to get out while already going good with the bat and the silly stuff starts from their bat after they score 30-40 runs...

Umar doesn't waste too many deliveries though. Talunted guy eats up way too many deliveries even after conditions have eased out.

I think Akmal was a promising Test player. Rohit hasn't shown any Test match ability yet, so can;t compare.. let Rohit play a few Tests overseas.

I am not comparing them i am just saying that they are similar in one way which is getting out stupid way...

This is blasphemy. For any avid lover of fast bowling, Amir was a breathe of fresh air. He was filled with natural talent and he had the skills to back them. It was an absolute joy to watch him run in and bowl swiniging deliveries at 145+K plus. For as long as I have been watching cricket Amir was the most naturally talented bowler to have come out in international cricket. Not only was he talented he was developing very quickly. Within a year of his debut, he developed the inswing amongst other variations and gained over 15ks in pace. He may be a cheater but you cannot deny the talent he possessed. That in itself would be an injustice.

Yes, let us keep morality out of on-field performance. Ricky Ponting may be one of the most arrogant/disliked players, but his greatness or rating as a player don't get lower because of that.

Amir was young and cheated, but was looking promising. Would have been nice to see if he performed consistently or not, had he been playing.
 
Lahiru Thirimanne another very underrated player the guy don't score so often average 30 with the bat but...Except one all his 50+ scores are in overseas conditions against top sides including his century against australia in australia...

He maybe under whelming compared to other all rounders of the past but name one better all rounder going today.

And I'm not talking about spin bowling all rounders who are dime a dozen.
 
Overrated - Sir Jadeja, Pak overall bowling lineup, Fatshed, U Chand, Yadav, Broad, current Eng-Test Team

Underrated - Raina, Shafiq, NZ-overall bowling lineup, Misbah as captain & batsman,

Kallis. The grandfather of all rounders. Still the best in the business.
Watson is in another league.
Sammy is more destructive with the bat.
Razzaq would still outperform him in this age even.
Even Mitchell Johnson is a better all rounder option.

Mathews isn't even the best all rounder in the team. That's Kulasekara.

It will be a pleasant surprise if Kallis plays another LOI for South Africa.

He is too old now and we all know where South Africa's priorities lie. They are going to preserve him for tests and he is hardly going to bowl. That is how they are going to squeeze a couple of years of test cricket out of him.

Watson is number one clearly. Funnily completely forgot about him :gul

Sammy isn't even close to Mathews. Not a competition.

Mathews can slot into most teams in the world purely as a batsman. Sammy is a completely bits n pieces cricketer.

No Razzaq cannot outperform him any more. He can match him in bowling but not in batting.

I seriously doubt that Razzaq can average 40 in test cricket today and 35 in ODIs. He's more likely to come up with more destructive knocks once in a while but in terms of reliability, no.

He is pretty much going to average less than 30 for the rest of his career.


Johnson?

The guy who averages 21 in tests and 16 in ODIs is a better option than Mathews?

Kulasakera is showing good promise with the bat but Mathews is still much more reliable.

Mathews isn't an all rounder in the league of Imran, Botham and Kapil that is for sure. Maybe as a batsman he is. He isn't destructive but he is a proper middle order batsman and his record reflects that. He is very likely going to end his career with a 40 or close to 40 average in both formats and that is excellent.

As a bowler, he is very mediocre. But he is still classified as an all rounder and is second only to Watson these days.

On top of that he is a proper pressure player.

Yes, he isn't express but bowls at the pace of Kallis and Razzaq (later part of his career).

A touch slower than Watson who cranks it up to 90 once in a while.
 
Shivnarine Chanderpaul is really underrated...The guy deserves more respect...

About Amla he is a good player no doubt, But not a match winner. Never saw him finish the matches like kohli and dhoni or even ABD. He chokes. U have a thread for it aswell. :misbah
 
Amla might be great but you cant depend or 100% rely on him. Like u Do on hussey and dhoni. I rate Hussey ahead of him. u can add hussey in underrated list.
