Pakistan (355/4) defeat South Africa (352/5) by 6 wickets in a historic chase to book spot in the final of Tri-Nation ODI series against New Zealand

Mohammad Rizwan in a post match ceremony:

"When Allah helps you, you are able to achieve records. As you know, cricket is a game of chance but we played to the best of our abilities and successfully chased the highest total. We weren’t expecting South Africa to reach 350 runs, we were planning to restrict them under 320. However the way Klaasen played his innings he took their score to 350."

"There were two key sources of motivation for us. When we were walking back to the pavilion, Khushdil Shah reminded us that we had already chased down 350 against Australia. Another player mentioned that we had also chased over 340 against Sri Lanka in the ODI World Cup. These motivations kept us going."

"When Salman Agha and I came to bat it was a pressure moment. I avoided looking at the scoreboard because my focus was on building a partnership. We planned in five-over phases and while we succeeded many times, we also faced setbacks."

"I don't get angry most of the times but players asked me to show aggression, so I did a bit. When you win a game there are always areas to improve, fielding is one of them and we will work on it because in CT 2025 we will be competing against champion sides where fielding will play an important role."

He did yes, but when you talk about Pakistan chasing huge targets it’s all Fakhar and in sha Allah.

Specially in the form Babar is in right now, he is not featuring in any 300+ chases unfortunately.
Form is temporary, class is permanent. Babar will be back. And it will be in the CT.

Can we please send Babar back to 3 though? Kab samjh ayi gi ye baat?

Also, I think Ghulam is a better option than Tayyab at 6. Although Tayyab hasn't don't anything wrong so far.
Please GOD! Please let them put Babar come back at 3, because his insufferable cult members would use this as an excuse to shield him conveniently papering over the fact that their pro stad padder has not performed since the Nepal match.

I am older than even ur father, stay in ur limits I am telling u one last time otherwise i will also do this gali galoch.
Your comments are indicating where u come from, what is ur educational level and ur immaturity.

Sir jee thanday ho jao, its all fun and games here. Its just a forum, enjoy and have fun.

Well done Tayyab for finishing off that game as anything could have happened with Pakistan needing 2 off 6 and Rizwan to face

Lol frustrated much Naqvi PR boy?

90 in first 10

42 in second 10 since Rizwan arrived

As a neutral following these posts, I think you should either trolling non stop or if you're not - stick to watching t20 cricket. I Don't think you understand odi cricket. They were 3 down after 10 overs, innings was rebuilt perfectly.

Pathetic haters owned. Come on talk now. Zindabad kaptana GOAT Asian keeper.

The only one pathetic is you.

The minute Babar gets to 20, you come online and tag everyone. He gets out 2 seconds later you disappear.

You then comeback when Rizwan scores, thought you supported the team?

Why do you not praise Fakhar, Salman and anyone other than RizBar?

A pathetic fan boy that only shows up when his idols score.

Seems like you are very upset to see any infra development in Pakistan. I will praise any development for people back home to the moon and rightly so. Unlike you, i back winners, not losers. Dont have that beta mentality. :ronaldo
Seems like you have a deep passion for all things construction. I need some work done on my roof. Are you available? :kp

Well played Rizwan and Salman.

Still question marks over who plays at 3.

Abrar was terrible. Khushdil could’ve had 2 wickets in his first over, IIRC.

This is the benefit of taking your time and getting set at the crease. Once you get set the runs start to flow. Especially on a flat pitch like this.

Seeing some of the comments of posters criticizing the approach of these two makes your feel like they started watching cricket yesterday.

They may still end up losing but so far Riz and Agha have batted brilliantly.

Yeah few of these posters have t20 brain.
You need to consolidate in 50 over games. Can't all be sloggers

Quality chase and great practice for the team.

Salman's batting was brilliant for a modern chase, and Rizwan did his part well. This is the type of fighting cricket you need to play to win tournaments instead of just hoping Fakhar comes off.

I still want to see Babar drop to #3 and get anyone else to open the innings alongside Fakhar.

Honestly, it’s sad how these fan boys only show up when their player scores. The kind of fans that bring more hate on to those players.

Khushdil offered a much improved performance with the ball in this match, on a very batting friendly track. That's a very positive sign for Pakistan.

The burn is real. I love when haters of Pak are burning. Zindabad Kaptana @Rana @Mamoon you both deserve this humiliation

Quite the chase and quite the win. I'll be honest, I had zero expectations of it happening after Fakhar got out but fantastic to see Rizwan & Salman putting together an incredible partnership together to seal the win. That scoring in the power play helped them big time as it allowed the batters to settle in even as they played slowly until they got set and started scoring easily. This is why scoring in the power play is so important and it was probably decades ago that Pakistan last managed to get around 90 runs in the first 10 overs. Usually we see 40-50 runs max no matter how big the target is. Hopefully we get more of this.

Congrats to Salman on his maiden century and what a way to get it. He was exceptional. Rizwan putting up another big hundred in a chase like he did vs SL in WC. Good signs.

Thank god we got this win because I cannot imagine how toxic things would have been going into the champions trophy had they lost. There's that serious conversation coming about how washed Babar is but that has been punted down the line thanks to the win. Really hope he actually plays meaningful knocks in the upcoming games but it's worrying how easily he keeps getting out to rubbish bowlers.

Ab main kuch kahunga to bura lagega kuch ko .

Too much over celebration by some of pakistan fans against va second string side in a meaningless match.

:kp

Credit needs to go to both batters equally. They were solid and performed equally well.

Agha + Rizwan. They were insync and I honestly can't tell who performed better between these 2.

This was definitely a better chase then wc 2023 where it was clear rizwan's innings was better then Abdullah's.
Nahh Abdullah Shafiq played better.

Score faster and played better shots … only difference was that he got out around the 30th over but Rizwan stayed until the end

no one forgot anything, we are celebrating the highest run chase our team has ever done.
Yes similarly how you did celebreated after highest ever successful Chase in World cup 2023 against Lanka by creating threads after threads .

But we all know what happened after that.

#JustSaying

so we are not suppose to feel about our team winning?

You can but too much overreaction after a meaningless win against second string team?

Few hours ago pakistan fans were criticized same team but now hyping like World beaters.

:kp

Fantastic run chase, good start given by openers. Rizwan and Agha paced their inns perfectly.

Pakistan needs to seriously sort ots bowling out though. Picking just 4 front line bowlers, you know the law of averages means at least 1 will have a bad game, the 5th / 6 bowling options are to easy to get at.

Still think they could've done better with a proper opener with Fakhar. Then you'd have.

1. Fakhar
2. Opener
3. Babar
4. Rizwan
5. Salman

Which would've been decent top 5.

Just gone through 16 pages of comments ... how pathetic that so called Pak supporters disappear when the players they dont like start scoring?

Its just laughable. Grow up! We're on the same side!

By the way 'mominsaigol' well done lad, at least you know how to take it on the chin.

Mohammad Rizwan shared following thoughts in his post match presser:

Confidence Boosting Victory

Rizwan celebrated the victory by stating, "We began with the phrase 'Bismillah Rehman Rahim,' acknowledging that success comes from Allah. And records shatter when the God is with you. We are thankful to Al Mighty for his divine support in helping us achieve the target of 350 runs, which represented Pakistan's largest successful chase in ODI"

Team Strategy and Planning

"We initially assumed the target to be somewhere near 320, later the team modified their approach as the innings unfolded. I chose to stop monitoring the scoreboard until the 18th over. A tactic that helped me refocus and adapt to the match's flow"

Importance of his Innings

"Surpassing 350 runs not only clinched the victory but also enhanced team morale. It is beneficial for us to score over 350 runs.Especially it was quite vital in context of the contemporary cricket"

Bowling Performance and Improvements

"We certainly need to improve. Adjustments are essential for upcoming matches. But they (South Africa) were lucky early on with numerous edges from their batters doesn't result in wickets for us. We bowled better in the middle overs but need to work on proper execution of strategy in death overs as a bowling unit"

Expectations from Babar Azam and current poor form

"Allah has endowed Babar with immense talent. He has significantly contributed as a player for Pakistan,I hold similar expectations for him because of his God-given talent. It seems he needs to alleviate some pressure from these expectations. However, he might not be experiencing the best of luck lately. There's nothing wrong with Babar Azam; he's scored many runs for Pakistan in the past, leading us to expect centuries from him regularly. This pressure is likely affecting him too. I hope he finds more luck moving forward; he is our champion batsman. Today, you could see Babar's remarkable confidence,"

On Being an Unpredictable Team

"It isn't solely about our cricket; it's a reflection of our cultural background too. Even a child in Pakistan is too unpredictable when it comes to picking up a profession. So we like our nation are an unpredictable team and the recent results in Australia, Zimbabwe and South Africa suggest that too."

Great words from great captain

Pakistan has all the bases covered. Great fast bowling unit check. Mystery bowling check. Part time spin check. Aggressive opener check. Outstanding fielding check. Middle batting enforcers check. Hot favorites.

Bro do you rate this pak team where do you see australia this time?

Australia gone case. Their batting looks ancient. THey need some fluke individual performance and choking from opposition to get anywhere. But it has happened before. THey looked hopeless in world T20, 2021. But they won six tosses in a row and won the whole thing. My bet is on NZ as they are a bit more versatile. I still won't rule out ENgland if the pitches are roads with no help for spinners.

In an exhilarating match at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi on Wednesday night, Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha struck magnificent centuries to guide Pakistan to their highest successful chase in One Day Internationals. The hosts triumphed over South Africa by six wickets, securing their spot in the final of the tri-nation ODI series.

Chasing a formidable target of 353 runs, Pakistan reached the finish line with an over to spare. Skipper Mohammad Rizwan remained unbeaten, scoring 122 off 128 balls, while Salman Ali Agha smashed an impressive 134 off 103 balls. The duo came together at 91-3 and forged a 260-run partnership, the highest fourth-wicket stand for Pakistan and the third-highest in ODIs for the country, before Salman was dismissed in the 49th over.

Salman, celebrating his maiden ODI century, surpassed his previous best of 82 not out against the same opposition in December 2024. His remarkable innings included 16 fours and two sixes. Rizwan, who entered at 87-2 in the 10th over following Saud Shakeel’s exit, hit nine boundaries and three sixes, marking his fourth ODI century.

Opening batters Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman provided a flying start, amassing 57 runs in just 6.1 overs. Babar scored 23 runs off 19 balls, including four boundaries, while Fakhar's 28-ball knock yielded 41 runs with six fours and one six.

For South Africa, Wiaan Mulder claimed two wickets, while Corbin Bosch and Lungi Ngidi took one wicket each.

Earlier, opting to bat first, South Africa posted 352-5 in their allotted 50 overs. Shaheen Shah Afridi struck early for Pakistan in the eighth over, breaking the 51-run opening partnership by dismissing Tony de Zorzi for 22 off 18 balls. Skipper Temba Bavuma (82 off 96 balls with 13 fours) and Matthew Breetzke (83 off 84 balls with 10 fours and one six) built a 119-run second-wicket partnership before Bavuma fell to a direct hit from Saud Shakeel in the 29th over.

Heinrich Klaasen top-scored with a quick 87 off 56 balls, hitting 11 fours and three sixes after coming in at no.4. He shared a 68-run stand with Breetzke, who was caught brilliantly by player of the match Salman at short cover. South Africa collected 110 runs in the last 10 overs, largely due to a fiery partnership between Klaasen and Kyle Verryenne (44 not out off 32 balls with three fours and one six), which added 78 runs off 48 balls. For Pakistan, Shaheen Shah Afridi took two wickets, while Naseem Shah and Khushdil Shah claimed one each.

Pakistan will face New Zealand in the final of the tri-nation ODI series on Friday, 14 February, at the National Bank Stadium, Karachi. The match will commence at 2pm PKT, with the toss at 1.30pm PKT.
