Pakistan (92/3) defeat New Zealand (90/10) by 7 wickets in the 2nd T20I to go 1-0 up in the 5-match T20I series

Welp. Our new opening partnership of Babar and Saim has got off to a terrible start.

Does babar azam not even know how to read spin from trundlers on a pindi pitch?

Other then a cut shot he's useless? Brooo?

I am not happy that our full strength team is playing against this joke of a team.r
JOKE team how..if they had scorer 150 they wud have won and next game they will. If i recall this kiwi c team beat us last time they came to pak

Generational talent Saim the 200 SR batter fails again for the 100th consecutive time?? What is going on???

I think Pakistan should consider sending in a withdrawal letter for this cup if they can't even chase 90 against a c side with 10 or 9 wickets in hand

The only thing this match will be missing is Haris duck and Azam run-out.

I hope you're not this negative in your daily life..

Saim failed because Babar made his face first ball.
Usman failed because Babar and Rizwan did not allow him to open

As i said 140 or 150.pak wud have lost they playing with such long tail with 6 genuine bowlers

This was a waste of time.

Can't believe i was looking forward to this match.

What is the point of a drinks break when we are literally 12 runs from victory

Not impressed with the batting effort. Too scratchy. NZ are a very professional side and will make the necessary adjustments for the remaining games.

I think he will, it seems more and more likely this duo will be restored.

Probs in the next few games
saim needs to be given a run i remember how rubbish rizwan was when he first started and even use to bat down the order at 6 or 7

Rizwan was rubbish yes, But he had no competiton.

Currently babar and rizwan both want to open so its unlikely saim will get the same 5 to 6 year privilege rizwan got

Wicketkeepers are often slow to adjust early on. Rizwan almost instantly performed when he started opening. Happened with Sarfraz early on. Same with Butler that people use as an example. If Rizwan hadn’t performed mega quickly when he started opening I think he would have been dropped, there were already screams to drop him in t20 when he was playing in middle order but was tolerated because of performance in other formats, and good wicket keeping.

Specialist batsman, batting in their preferred position less so. Still give him time. But Rizwan is the exception in our team, nearly every batsman in any of our formats who have actually had a career started performing early on in some level. Fakhar, imam, Babar, Umar (though he dropped off).

Saim I think is underperforming more because he is too young and is being rushed in because lack of alternative options. So we have to give him a little more time based on that.

I don't recall any screaming to drop rizwan. Infact he was listed in the top 5 players to represent Pakistan cricket for the future alongside sami aslam(USA run away), Babar(captain), Zafar gohar( No clue where he is), and one more bowler forgot who it was.

Infact after 2019 people wanted him to replace sarfraz because of those 2 100's against d string Australia.

No one expected him to open though

Post match talk of Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi and Michael Bracewell:

Babar Azam, Pakistan captain
: "Have to set tone in first six overs. The way Shaheen, Naseem and Amir bowled was outstanding. Will experiment with the combination, will try different batters at different numbers. On paper whenever you look at the Pakistan team, every player looks like a match-winner. We try to play according to the situation. Have 10 matches before the T20 WC. On the day we try to do well in all three departments. Want everything up to the mark going into the World Cup."

Michael Bracewell, NZ captain: "Didn't score quite enough runs. We were slow to adapt to the surface and put ourselves under pressure. Want guys to learn from the situation. Got a game tomorrow, have to learn pretty quickly. One of the things we pride ourselves on as Black Caps is fighting till the end."

Shaheen Shah Afridi, POTM: "Did bowling after a few days. Not easy for a bowler to get the rhythm straightaway. Backed my skills. In T20s, swing disappears after one over. Bowled accordingly to what conditions demanded. Bowling has gotten stronger with return of Amir."

As if he will try a different batsman as an opener besides himself!

Fast bowler Mohammad Amir took two for 13 in his first international match in four years as Pakistan romped to a comfortable seven-wicket victory over New Zealand in the second T20I at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

Amir dismissed Tim Robinson on his second delivery and added the scalp of Dean Foxcroft eight balls later as New Zealand were sent tumbling out for 90 in 18.1 overs. Pakistan raced to victory in the 13th over, losing three wickets along the way.

Shaheen Shah Afridi was once again the pick of Pakistan's bowlers when he returned figures of 3.1-0-13-3. He picked up the wickets of Tim Seifert (12), Cole McConchie (15), and last-man Ben Lister (1).

After Shaheen and Amir caused the initial damage, wrist spinners Abrar Ahmed and Shadab Khan joined the party. Abrar, bowling for the first time in T20Is, picked up two for 15, while Shadab Khan also returned identical figures.

Naseem Shah, bowling for the first time in international cricket since September 2023, bagged one for 27 as New Zealand's batters found the going tough. Mark Chapman, with 19, was the top-scorer.

Chasing a modest total, Mohammad Rizwan returned unbeaten on a 34-ball 45 to guide his side to a six-wicket victory with more than seven overs to spare. Rizwan struck four fours and a six.

Saim Ayub started off aggressively by hitting the first ball for a boundary but departed next ball after Lister brought off a stunning return catch. Babar Azam was stumped off the opposite number Michael Bracewell for 14, while Usman's first outing in T20Is lasted just six balls before he was cleaned up by Ish Sodhi.

Muhammad Irfan Khan, also batting for the first time in Pakistan colors, scored a run-a-ball 18 not out and added 36 runs for the unfinished fourth wicket with Rizwan.

The first T20I on Thursday was rained off after two balls, while the third T20I will be played here on Sunday. The remaining two matches will be played in Lahore on 25 and 27 April, respectively.

Scores in brief:

2nd T20I – Pakistan beat New Zealand by seven wickets

New Zealand 90 all out, 18.1 overs (Shaheen Shah Afridi 3-13, Abrar Ahmed 2-15, Shadab Khan 2-15)

Pakistan 92-3, 12.1 overs (Mohammad Rizwan 45 not out, Mohammad Irfan Khan 18 not out)

Player of the match – Shaheen Shah Afridi (Pakistan)

Siam is a very good talent. But with Babar being captain it is not going to be a good thing. For Babar, Siam is the best opening partner who would always score runs quickly. And Babar would always encourage him to do that by saying "play your game". On days when Siam scores quickly it will work for team and it will work for Babar. If Siam gets out hitting both Babar and Rizwan are in happy situation. But in cricket there will be days when Siam wont get going and in those situation batsman on the other end (in this case Babar) needs a higher strike rate to release the pressure or take over the aggressor role. But we all know that's not going to happen especially in difficult conditions.

So Siam is in very tricky situation but he needs to be smart about his cricket if he seeks longevity and wants to play long cricket. Opening with Babar especially in 20/20 is tricky for any opening partner especially a young one who is trying to cement a spot in the team. Babar will always fight for Siam to have in squad but in reality Babar needs Siam (or someone similar) to be successful in 20/20 cricket.

Victory against a New Zealand "B" side giving them a false sense of accomplishment. :ROFLMAO: They will be badly exposed against the full strength Test sides this world cup,(y)

What’s with the meltdown I keep seeing from some people?

We won the match easily. Just wish Saim would score some runs and cement his spot.
His spot should be cemented in T20 cricket for the next two years.

Need to create an environment where failure is ok and not the end of the world. This kid has the xfactor and needs to be supported through thick and thin.

Otherwise if he is dropped or put under pressure he will turn into a defensive player.

Where the Pakistan haters at?

Upset that Rizwan was highest scorer or that Ayub failed?

Haha!
Every single player who is supposed to be Rizwan’s replacement ends up performing far worse than him.

Still rooting for Usman Khan to perform, he has a great story, and would be a great #4 for us. But, it’s clear Rizwan is and has been one of the only consistent performers across formats for us.

Yes, completely agree. In T20 cricket, failures will come, but someone with as much talent as Saim must be backed.

He has already put in some hard work in FC and List A cricket as well and has good numbers. He should be our opener in multiple formats.

Do you mean players like match-winner Azam Khan? Yeah he is a bonafide match winner cos he has great intentions, just like Imad! (Tongue firmly in cheek).

Rizwan ain't going anywhere. He has proved once again he one of the best Pakistan has to offer right now.

You don’t understand. Azam Khan may only average 4 runs in intentional T20s, but they are a very impactful 4 runs!
