Pakistan finish Day 1 at 59/2 after bowling New Zealand out for just 153

Kane Williamson is the best test batsman in the world by a mile. A treat to watch.

It's such a shame that NZ play such little test cricket. They are genuinely a top test side, and deserve far more attention. Williamson, if given enough games, has enough ability to break all sorts of test batting records.

Nicholls throws away a start with a flash outside off stump.

Important for Pakistan to break that NZ partnership. They were recovering well after losing early wickets.

Abbas' can get tons of wickets but his legacy as a world class bowler will be defined if he takes wickets of top class batsmen. Mohammad Asif made Ponting, Pietersen, Laxman, Sehwag look like bunnies which is why he is more fondly remembered. Abbas must also do the same and get Williamson out on a consistent basis.

True but there’s no reason to hold that expectation of him.

Even Top bowlers of countries like Australia and South Africa have failed to produce a bowler of Asif’s class since he was playing and even when he got banned. Steyn is the only one.

Talent like that is rare.

Watling has been known to play important knocks before. Need to dismiss him asap.

Don't see this NZ lower order lasting too long if we can break this partnership.

Batsmen Dismissed by Asif across Tests/ODIs/T20s (in brackets are Match/Dismissals Ratio)

1. ABDV - 5 times (2.8)
2. KP - 5 times (2.4)
3. Graeme Smith - 5 times (2.2)
4. Amla - 5 times (1)
5. Strauss - 4 times (3)
6. Clarke - 4 times (2.75)
7. Tharanga - 4 times (2.5)
8. Sangakkara - 4 times (1.75)
9. Trescothick - 4 times (1.5)
10. North - 4 times (1.25)

He really got the best batsmen out on a regular basis. Those Mat/Dis ratio is amazing.

Williamson’s knock reminds me of Amla’s hundred on the opening day of the 2013 series in Abu Dhabi. The day will probably end in a similar story.

South Africa scored 220 odd and Amla got 50% of those runs.

Bowling Haris for a couple of overs is a good move.

He pretty much ended de Villiers’ career as an opener. Anderson has been similar to Asif in terms of troubling the top batsmen and getting a high percentage of top-order wickets.

His lack of pace has resulted in him not being every effective in cleaning the tail. With a bit more pace, he would arguably be averaging 22-23 with a better strike rate.

When you watch opposition teams play against us , when we bowl a part time bowler they always look to score against them and ensure that they put the loose balls away. Our batsmen don't always seem to the same.

I hope the next generation can learn from this.

Big wicket. Hasan justifying his selection. Short stuff does the trick.

Don't see this NZ lower order lasting too long here. De Grandhomme will more than likely look to play positive.

Not batting much different from Azhar though.
Joke aside I expect a masterclass from Williamson today after failing in ODI and T20s.

Azhar is three levels below Root, Smith and Williamson, and four levels below Kohli.

It's seems like Asad Ali will have a chance to throw is wicket in the final over.

New Zealand are one quality middle-order batsman short. They need someone more than just an all-rounder to complement Williamson and Taylor.

It is a shame how Jesse Ryder’s career went south because of off-field problems and controversies. He was some talent.

Reverse doing the trick I would bring Abbas back on from the other end straight away.

Williamson threw his wicket. A completely harmless short ball and he ends up nicking it.

2 wickets for Hasan Ali.

This is excellent bowling from Pakistan, not easy bowling Day 1 in UAE and particularly in Abu Dhabi.

Boult And Wagner could cause problems if they get some reverse swing. Shouldn't get complacent here.

Sodhi is Ashwin whose parents moved to New Zealand and he decided to bowl leg-spin.

I can’t be the only who gets the same vibe in terms of mannerism, personality etc.

Hasan Ali looking serious, maybe fired up after a poor patch of form recently.

Beauty by Hasan.
mak36 same thing happened, remember :p ?

Yes exactly. Has got his fizz back; two in two and now looks like he will take a wicket every ball. He's bowled well all day to be fair to him.

Commies didn't give Hasan enough credit for Williamson's wicket, that ball followed KW and bounced more than he expected.

Cut off the surface as well.

Lol another wicket but that ball tracking showed the ball turning a long way not sure if the ball would have turned that much.

Great decision from the "Ox"- he's a good umpire from memory.

Good captaincy from Sarfraz! People were criticising him bringing on Harris.

Great captaincy by the so called "poor" captain for first selecting him and then bowling him at the right time.

Exactly.

TBH, most of the NZ commies are pretty biased (just as they were in the series in January).

They have been biased for years. Don't mind them as people but can't stand there biased commentary.

Abbas is a pro at wiping the tail. Might be a good idea to bring him on.

Bilal Asif is a complete waste of a spot in the starting lineup. If the team management has selected him based on his batting capability, then Kamran Ghulam would've been a better choice.

We need better off spinners in our domestic. Bilal Asif is so so ordinary. Azhar Ali is a better bowler than him.

Sarfraz doesn't have much confidence in him. That's why I don't understand his selection.

Haris is getting the ball to fizz.

Bowling a little bit quicker and the ball is gripping. Finger spinners are always in the game in UAE.
