Pakistan's only chance is really is to grab this last wicket for <350 and then it'll be a monster of a chase.

I'd say it's 80/20 Sri Lanka's favour here.

Barring a miracle batting by Pakistan, this should be an easy win for SL. 90/10 to SL

Will be a test for our batting. There's lots of time left in this test, it's all about building partnerships

SLVSPAK: 01st Test Match: Day 4 will start at 09.57 am. 91 overs scheduled

Damn. Do we have any info about Shaheen?
He would certainly be starting today.

Chandimal batting well. His comments earlier:

"This the best I've batted for Sri Lanka and I am glad I'm contributing. When you go past 30 you mature as a batter as a cricketer. If you keep working on your fitness one day your performances will come. This is a difficult pitch. Even if you are set you can't be really confident of getting a bit score. It's different to the Australia series. You got to be proactive on this pitch."

Bowled. Great delivery!
Naseem removes Jayasurya. Was bang on the money this morning.

Won't be surprised to see that Pakistan have already given up and start batting for a draw. 10 runs in first 10 overs. 20 in 20 overs then 29 in 30 overs.

Abdullah again being clueless against left arm

He needs coaching from Babar Azam as captain has fought his nightmare against left arm spin as well.

Abdullah just survives. Needs to look after his pad and make it count

That looked very out. Abdullah's technical flaws are glaring

Against SLAs. Negotiated off spin, leggy pretty well against Aus and plays pace well too. However, sometimes he gets into a shell which you don’t want especially when you have some shots that you can apply when bowler is getting on top.

Even against pace he gets squared up easily to back off length deliveries. It may not look too bad on the slow surfaces he's been playing on

Agree. Abdullah is poor vs spin, and nothing to talk about even vs pace. Plus he is even Azhar's guru when it comes to tuk tuk.

The less said about imam the better. He has no buiseness playing test cricket. If there is anything, anything in the wicket, he is a walking wicket. Got no shots to speak of.

Nothing unplayable so far. Need to make bowlers feel the pressure as well as the ball gets older. Older ball has only been offering slow spin.

Yes have showed tendencies however, too early too judge before he actually plays in SENA. Mindset though needs some moulding, even when he was well settled vs Aus he wasn’t using the position to dominate the bowling as much as he can. Then again, the guy just debuted after 3 FC matches and was playing his debut test series so can’t be too critical rather will have to be patient.

Couple of agressive shots by the openers. That's the way to go. Jayasurya too good otherwise. Bowled an absolute peach to Shafique.

He's got a lot of potential undoubtedly. Just needs to keep learning from his mistakes

Starting in these conditions is not easy. If you get settled and get a partnership going then ideally you should go big as Babar showed to his team mates.

Despite a few close calls, both openers have been very positive in their approach. The challenge now will be continuing to stay positively even if wickets fall. Because that's where Pakistani batters go int their shell before ultimately imploding

Roshan Abeysinghe just reminding that Pak was chasing a similar total vs Aus in the last home series and openers had 71 runs stand and then the team collapsed to 230 odd all out. :dw

Azhar ali will completely kill the momentum as soon as one of these openers gets out.

Could be a good tactic to not send Azhar next. If he gets out cheaply it would put the rest of the line up under pressure. Would be a huge boost for SL that they got our most 'experienced' batter. 'Azhar to come' is a better scenario than 'Azhar is out'

Am I dreaming? A partnership without babar and both are going at nearly a S/R of 50!

The best scenario for everyone is Azhar in the commentary box

It's good, they need to maintain it. The moment they started attacking, Lankan spinners were put off their lines and lengths.

Both openers did survive close calls though, and it's going to be more dangerous as the game progresses.

Both of these created a platform vs Aus as well but, middle order didnt built upon that to win it. Need to stand up here otherwise we might see someone getting dropped from the XI like has happened with Fawad post Aus series.

Its easy to drop fawad but not the parasitic azhar

Great start so far. Both openers are really applying themselves and playing great knocks. But that said, its hard not to see this pitch deteriorating and becoming a minefield to bat on after a certain point. Even if it doesn't play like a traditional Galle surface.

Which is why maintaining the run rate is not enough. You have to accelerate it. Especially if you are set at the crease like these two are.

It is still day 3. Both teams batted very poorly in their first digs

Azhar's century vs Aus helped him. To be honest unless they are helping in wins and take us to this test championship final there is not point of persisting with both (Yes Azhar has scored in last 2 years but, at 37 with his limitations especially overseas does not make him to be a good investment for future at this stage) I believe as they are not likely going to be around for the complete next test championship cycle of around 3 years. As far as they are performing and helping us win we can carry them through in this cycle. When you are above 35 the scrutiny is a lot more as you dont have much roam to grow and your reflexes are not going to get any better so better to try and invest in mid 20s guys who can offer more long term investment.

Otherwise guys like Kamran Ghulam, Saud Shakeel deserve to get the opportunities.

What a rubbish decision! Enough doubt for the batsman...should have been not out

Tough call. I thought there was a spike touching the ground but, I guess that's what it is.

wow i didn't expect this from Pakistan. 87 without losing wicket if they continue play this Pakistan can win

Time for Azhar to score a 100. Srl is one away tour where you expect him to deliver consistently but, then SLAs can be a horror for him.

Poor from Srl. Why would you have long off for a new batsman and allow him an easy single to get off the park. Unless plan is to have him on strike against Jayasuriya considering his struggles against SLA

I'm pretty sure if someone looked at the stats they would find out that the average length of a test match at this venue is between 2-3 days.

There was bit of moisture in the wicket initially and ball was hurrying on a bit more. It seems to have slowed down quite a bit with not much quick turn for spinners once the bowl gets older. However, yes the batting wasnt great as well in the first innings.

is it me but whats happened to Azhar's technique. Plants his foot forward like a tail ender and hopes for the best

Here we go - Azhar at his finest. Handing back the initiative as usual

Imam was hard done by the third umpire, shoe pike was touching the ground on the clearest image.

I guess its the first time ever I am seeing Azhar without an arm guard. Only one pacer for Srl so that might be the reason

Azhar Ali sucking the life out of the innings

This will cause more wickets to fall

Mashaallah Azhar. One of the best tail enders in the game. Just not his day.
