Pakistan went in with 4 debutants in the first Test - none except Saud Shakeel really performed that well.

It is also unlikely that Haris Rauf will play in the 2nd Test.

What changes should be made for the XI?

A debut for Abrar Ahmed looks very likely as Zahid really could not cut it in this game.

The squad is that poor in terms of balance and has 18 players in it.

Azhar / Agha both need dropping but shan is only other batsmen. Also the bowling and long tail is an issue.

Bowling wise Abrar should come in put our pacers also looked toothless, huge mess of a squad and series to fix here.

The biggest change necessary is a brain transplant for the captain. Obviously that, or his replacement, won't happen.

Even with a few personnel changes (Abrar for Zahid, dropping Azhar for an AR) and perhaps some grass being left on the pitches in Multan and Karachi, I still can't see us taking a Test off England.

The team looked shell shocked in face of England's onslaught, and the bowling is the worst I've ever seen.

I know not the best option but Pakistan need to play Abbas in place of Rauf as a work horse who knows discipline of test match bowling.

Shadab if available should come in, else Nawaz should play.

Abrar should debut.

Shan for Azhar

Cricinfo saying that Abbas and Hassan Ali could be recalled to the squad with Rauf's injury.

Now if the Pakistan think tank actually use their brain, we could have this attack
8. Faheem
9. Hasan Ali or Abbas
10. Naseem
11. Abrar

Nawaz to replace Azhar Ali for added bowling option as we need to take 20 wickets. I will feel more confident with this attack.

Pakistan needs Abbas to stem the flow of runs from one end. He slots in for Rauf. Also need someone to replace the expensive Naseem Shah - are Dahani / Akif any good?

With 2 spinners they must make a spin pitch

We need to know what kind of pitch it is before putting teams forward.
Shan comes into the top 6 for Azhar ali.
Faheem needs to play at number 8.
Will nawaz be a better bowling option than agha to play at 7?
Naseem has to play in case the ball actually does something. Faheem can be the workhorse and we will have 5 bowling options to spread the workload.
I guess abrar will have to play and we need a quick with experience so Hasan or Abbas (I'd consider Mir Hamza too)

Nawaz 100% is better as a all rounder and as a bowling all rounder.

For those saying Abbas and Faheem will bring control and be able to keep a lid on the scoring rate, what is this based on?

If the pitches are as Pindi's and the Australia series 78-80mph line and length bowlers will be cannon fodder for the current English batsmen and their style of play. I remember a few games in county cricket this season Faheem being expensive and Abbas never cut it at ODI level. So if there is no assistance in the pitch it will be much more of the same.

Crawley is more comfortable against high pace as opposed to conventional swing.

That's something to think about

Early wickets is the only way to slow down England's run rate

England may break the 1000 run barrier in their first innings with similar pitch and same bowling attack as the one in Pindi.

Sadly Abrar is probably not going to play due to Babar’s nepotism.

To counter Bazball you need a helpful pitch for the bowlers or you need bowlers and bowling captains adopting T20 death overs tactics.

Abbas is not the answer and mark my words England will deal with his 125 km/hr with disdain. Hasan Ali has shown nothing in domestic cricket to deserve a recall. These moves will clearly show that the team management, selectors have panicked and are not thinking straight.

Pakistan will win if they go in with a mid set of winning . 7 times of 10 Pakistan will beat Eng in Asia if the attitude is Positive.

Experience is required Pak lost due to their naivety veterans like Sarfraz are warming bench and we are playing rookies clearly the lobby at PcB ruining our heritage and proud record.

Why not give Mohammad Wasim a go? He can bowl many overs and can also reverse the ball later on. I know he can struggle with his control, but he can't do worse than the bowlers did in first test.

He shouldnt even be in the squad, hes got zero control and his 1st class record is poor as well and just highlights what a poor squad mo wasim selected.

Currently, the fast-bowling resources are atrocious and therefore going with a seaming track is a recipe for disaster. I'd back Abrar, Nauman/Nawaz to create some pressure over Naseem, Ali, Abbas - such is the situation.

Pakistan needs to think about preparing a turning wicket to give themselves any chance of winning. A batting or seaming wicket will not work at all.

What?! He is averaging 24,85 with the ball in first class. He has only played 7 matches allright, so you could say he is inexperienced, but since he is in the squad and have some international experience from other formats he should get a chance.

They should play the same side. Stick with the debutants. They need time to come good

We cant afford yet another T20, tape ball bowler being hammered round the back in test matches. The guy showed during T20 world cup he had no bowling intelligence or game plans, come test matches the guys going to have to bowl a lot of overs and 7 first class matches aint enough prep for test cricket. We saw what happened to naseem early on when he 1st played with zero 1st class experience a few years ago.

Early wickets is the only way to slow down England's run rate

No so. England have been 40-3 this year and then Bairstow and Stokes have gone berserk anyway.

Eng only won 2 Tests in 24 attempts in Pakistan in 61 years, I don't think Saqlain and Co. Knew this, thus far handing 3 debuts in such an important game was criminal on one hand there was veteran of 667 wickets and what we had a collection of 34 wickets between 4 bowlers shameful.

Abbas HassanAli Faheem Ashraf should be brought back to restore normality otherwise its men vs boys stuff

Alarming at BBC Pakistan attack had few collective wickets 34 not fielded since mid-1950s shambolic, I'd say sack the entire management and selectors as they have some vendetta against players

I know people don’t like him here due to short sightedness, but Hasnain needs to come in for now while Haris is injured. If not him, I’m even willing to give Wasim a chance. England are playing LOI in tests so we need a LOI style bowler.

We gotta go all in and go with proper pacers. No dibbly dobblers. They won’t make the situation better. Would you play Abbas in ODIs? No? Well then don’t play him in tests Vs England because England are playing ODIs in tests right now.

Kick out Zahid. Bring in Abrar. Bring in Hasnain or Wasim. Replace Azhar with Shan as per the injury. Besides, Shan can’t do worse and is high on confidence after a decent t20 WC. England bowling isn’t that threatening apart from Robinson and Anderson.

And then win the series. Simple.

Will Babar have the balls to do this? Probably not. He’s a “steady” captain. Ship sinking? No problem, let’s just stand on deck and hope it stops sinking :afridi

Curious to see how this Test will unfold given the resounding statement England made in the first Test. Only way Pakistan can compete is when they play on sporting pitch which assists bowlers.

Now there are calls to bring Hassan back. Its a circus. The guy was incredibly poor in white ball cricket that it overshadowed his exploits in tests. And emotionally people called for his head and there you go, now they want him back.

All this while, the management was clueless and had no idea how to manage resources. They thought we have Shaheen at our disposal forever and we'll grind him everywhere. That's the start and end of their vision.

Faheem ashraf is another connection selection maybe he knows some general or police commissioner.

He was atrocious for Sussex

On what basis is he selected in the squad

Faheem for Haris Rauf for the 2nd Test?

I dont mind pakistan losing as long as we compete well. Our test team is not well set ,no bowling combination and a lot of new players in top and middle order. What i dont want to see is playing to avoid a loss , we need to go in with positive intent and hopefully better captaincy.

this will be another dead wicket, we will go with same mentality of drag the opposition and in terms opposition will drag pak and score 600 in first day :)

Why not give Mohammad Wasim a go? He can bowl many overs and can also reverse the ball later on. I know he can struggle with his control, but he can't do worse than the bowlers did in first test.

Wasim and Rauf shouldnt have been in the squad in the first place.

The only saving grace is England will look to bat first again. Their bowlers were in the field for 3.5 days so I would assume Stokes will again look to bat first. If Pakistan bat first and it turns out to be a flat wicket, then they would need to give a target of 600. On a flat wicket, Pakistan must bowl first.

However, if they manage to make a spinning cobra, then Pakistan has a decent chance of winning given they bat first.

Really looking forward to this. PKN will be stung by the home loss and likely to come back hard.

I am expecting a strong response from Pakistan in Multan. They have now lost back to back home Tests against Australia and England and they won’t want to be beaten again.

I would expect to see a Pakistan win or a Draw in this match, either of which would keep the series alive going into the 3rd and final Test.

England delivered an unbelievable performance, one of the greatest performances ever in the long, very long, history of Test cricket, to clinch the first Test. The more we applaud it, the less it still feels. It was their aggression in batting and the attacking mindset alone which was able to deduce a result in such a high-scoring match on that lifeless pitch. Congratulations to them! Full credit to Stokes, their captain, and coach McCullum.

However, I would like to see how this whole "Bazball" thing fares in case, for example, Pakistan win the toss on a similar kind of pitch and set up a huge first innings score, like 500 or 600. Really looking forward to such a situation.

Literally every top side has a better top 6.

Masood is rubbish. Shakeel & Rizwan are average. Babar is not an elite Test batsman & Shafique is still new & relatively untested.

I think Pakistan should with Mir Hamza, Mohammad Ali and Mohammad Abbas as three pacers. We should also Slot in Abrar and Noman Ali as the two spinners. Batters pick themselves in the 11.

Draw ?

Win is the only option.
No draws. We are still stuck in 1960’s.

Englands best spinner is Jack Leach. .
Outside of Root and Stokes, no England player has real confidence in playing spin.

Seam and flat pitches will play to England's favour, what you need is a full on tuner and then attack England by focusing on spin

Three spin options, five genuine bowling options, keep the attack on England

Pakistan hopes to get more life from the pitch when it takes on England in the second Test in Multan starting on Friday.

England took full advantage of winning the toss — and its batting depth — to win the first Test by 74 runs on Monday on a dead Rawalpindi wicket that offered nothing to the bowlers. Multan, however, despite not hosting a Test match for 16 years, could provide more spin if recent domestic matches are anything to go by.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam, who scored a century in Pakistan’s first innings in Rawalpindi, said he wanted something more lively. “We wanted a spin pitch (in Rawalpindi),” he told reporters.

“I gave my input... but unfortunately it was not what we planned.”

Rawalpindi yielded 1,768 runs in four innings — the third most in Test history — with seven individual centuries and five 50s. But Multan helped spinners in the last first-class match played there, with former Test spinner Yasir Shah taking five wickets in each innings.

Zahid Mahmood likely to face the axe

Still, leg-spinner Zahid Mahmood — who conceded a whopping 319 runs for his six wickets in the first Test — may get the axe from the Pakistan selectors. Mohammad Nawaz and the uncapped Abrar Ahmed are vying for his spot. Fast bowler Hasan Ali will likely fill in for the injured Haris Rauf, himself a replacement for world-class pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, who is out of the series.

England will also make an injury change, with wicketkeeper-batter Ben Foakes likely coming in for Liam Livingstone, who is heading home for treatment on his knee.

Regardless of the Multan surface, England skipper Ben Stokes has promised no end to “Bazball,” the brand of aggressive cricket coined from the nickname of head coach Brendon McCullum. “We’re going to play to win every game,” he said after Monday’s win — the seventh in eight Tests since the McCullum-Stokes partnership took over in May.

“It’s not always going to work, but if you’re brave enough and willing enough to go out and play in that way, if you lose a game, it’s still going to be entertaining.”

The weather could also be a factor.

Provincial authorities have issued a fog alert for the next few days, which could eat into playing time.

AP

In-form England face a selection dilemma of sorts as they attempt to squeeze all their major weapons into their side for the second Test against Pakistan in Multan.

England put a massive dent in Pakistan's hopes of reaching next year's ICC World Test Championship final when they registered a thrilling 74-run victory over the Asian side during the first Test in Rawalpindi and Ben Stokes' team will be looking to replicate that performance when the second Test commences on Friday.

Speedster Mark Wood and first-choice keeper Ben Foakes missed that epic triumph due to injury and illness respectively, but the duo appear fit again and in line to earn a recall to the XI as England juggle their wealth of riches available.

All-rounder Liam Livingstone will miss the clash due to the knee injury he picked up on the second day of the first Test, while there may be an unlucky player make way should Foakes take the gloves from stand-in keeper Ollie Pope.

Stokes said it was a strong position for his side to be in to have so many options at selection and that he would sit down with coach Brendon McCullum and choose what they felt would be the best XI to win the match.

"We'll have to consider all our different options," Stokes said.

"I think there are a few different options we are going to lay out in front of each other, and try and understand what is the best option to try and win this Test match. Because we have got a few other factors that we have to contend with.

"That's the great thing about where we're at at the moment. We found ourselves in that situation (illness prior to the first Test) and we still managed to pick a team that was strong enough to win a game.

"As I said, we are going to have a conversation at some point about what we feel is the best route to go."

Another option for England could be to hand a debut to uncapped spinner Rehan Ahmed, after the teenager was added to the squad just prior to the first Test.

If selected Ahmed would overtake Brian Close and become the youngest male to debut in a Test match for England and selectors have faith that the 18-year-old is more than capable of performing well if chosen.

"We know he’s not the finished article and has raw potential,” England coach Brendon McCullum said of Ahmed last month.

"But Ben (Stokes), myself and the rest of the coaches like how he approaches his game.

"The experience of being part of the squad in Pakistan will be hugely beneficial for him, and he will add to the makeup of our squad."

And while England are out of contention of reaching next year's World Test Championship final, they can severely hamper Pakistan's chances by registering a second straight win with a series clinching victory.

Pakistan are currently in fifth place on the World Test Championship standings with a 46.67 win-percentage and would likely need to win their remaining four Test matches this period to sneak into next year's decider.

Pakistan need to bowl better. Bowling was quite poor in 1st Test.

I would love to see Rehan get a run. The moribund Silverwood regime would never take a risk but BMac-Stokes might.

England should be able to seal the series. This team has no hope.

England recall Mark Wood with Ollie Pope to keep wicket again in second Test against Pakistan
Mark Wood missed the first Test, in which England claimed a thrilling win, with a hip injury but comes in for Liam Livingstone, who has been ruled out for the rest of the series; watch the second Test live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Cricket from 4.30am

England have made one change for the second Test against Pakistan, with Mark Wood replacing the injured Liam Livingstone.

That means Ollie Pope will keep wicket again in Multan, with Ben Foakes sitting out, and Will Jacks retaining his place in the side.

Wood missed the first Test, which England won by 74 runs in Rawalpindi, with a hip injury he suffered during the T20 World Cup.

But the fast bowler will return to the side as a replacement for Livingstone, 29, who suffered a knee injury during the first Test and will miss the rest of the tour.

Wood will join the pace attack alongside Ben Stokes, James Anderson and Ollie Robinson, while Jacks will provide back-up to front-line spinner Jack Leach.

The 32-year-old was an integral part of England's T20 World Cup victory in Australia, but last featured in a Test side against the West Indies in March 2022 after missing the bulk of the summer through injury.

Jacks was handed his Test debut just minutes before the first Test after Foakes failed to recover in time from an illness that had rocked England's camp on the eve of the match.

Ben Stokes:

In this Test, if it does pan out the way that it could potentially, with the late start and early finish, we could end up having only 300-350 overs in the Test match,” he said.

“We might have to get even a bit more adventurous with what we do. We’ll see.”

England XI for Multan

Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope (wk), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Will Jacks, Mark Wood, Ollie Robinson, Jack Leach, Jimmy Anderson

Pakistan performance will be much better, as usual Pakistan always come back from behind. Atleast this time they do not feel obliged to slect Zahid due ro seniority after his poor performance in the first match, and Ali would be better after his experience in the debut match. Hopefully, they will not have another pacer breakdown mid match, and personally I would replace Agha with Faheem as he will offer tighter bowling and probably similar amount of runs. If the pitch would spin then Nawaz should take up his place, even Kamran Ghulam would bowl better than Agha or Saud did as support bowlers.

Pace bowler Mark Wood will return to the England team for the second Test against Pakistan, starting on Friday.

Wood, 32, replaces injured all-rounder Liam Livingstone in the only change from the side that won the first Test, meaning no place for Ben Foakes.

Regular wicketkeeper Foakes missed the first Test through illness and his stand-in Ollie Pope keeps the gloves.

England will seal their first series win against Pakistan outside of the UK for 22 years with victory in Multan.

Wood has not played a Test since March because of an elbow injury that kept him out of the home summer.

His inclusion gives the England attack an extra dimension. Wood is, perhaps, the quickest bowler in the world. That could really help on a pitch which could be just as flat as the unforgiving first-Test pitch in Rawalpindi.

"Having someone in your squad who can bowl at 150 km/h is a massive bonus for any team around the world, especially as Pakistan is a very hard place to come and win," said England captain Ben Stokes.

"Having someone of his calibre and what he brings will be massive for us. It will add to our ability to take 20 wickets."

With Wood included, England could have left out all-rounder Will Jacks, but have instead opted for the extra bowling option in favour of specialist keeper Foakes.

Foakes has been England's first-choice gloveman since Stokes took over as captain and was originally named in the XI for the first Test, only to be ruled out on the morning of the game.

Stokes has repeatedly called 29-year-old the best wicketkeeper in the world and the captain says his omission from this Test has no reflection on his future prospects, despite Pope and the injured Jonny Bairstow providing options behind the stumps.

"It's obviously very tough on Foakesy to miss out on this game," Stokes told BBC Sport.

"Pakistan is very hard place to come and win, especially in the longer format. Understanding that makes decisions like this, as hard they are, a little bit easier.

"One thing we did say to him was not to take it as any future marking on himself in this team. It's for this Test match at the moment.

"We had to take the decision on what we thought was the best way of creating 20 chances on this pitch."

Foakes' Surrey team-mate Pope scored a century batting at number three in the first Test, but had a mixed game with the gloves.

The 24-year-old dropped a catch in Pakistan's first innings and failed to move for an edge when England only needed one wicket to win.

However, Pope also took a smart stumping on the fourth morning and a spectacular acrobatic catch when England were pushing for victory on the final afternoon.

In what will only be Pope's third Test keeping wicket, Stokes said England will be mindful of his workload and Ben Duckett, another part-time keeper, has been put on stand-by to take the gloves if required.

England's win in Rawalpindi was one of their all-time great overseas triumphs and has set up the prospect of a first away win against Pakistan since 2000.

"The confidence we take out of last week into this week is going to be huge for us," added Stokes.

"It's very important for us to keep pushing forward and not be complacent.

"The big one is not to get conservative and be happy we're 1-0 up, because we'll certainly be trying to leave here 2-0."

How beautifully you have skipped the name of Imam

As per some reports, gunshots were heard within 1km range from the hotel where Eng team is staying.

More than the teams i would imagine the groundstaff and the PCB people would be under more stress with the spotlight on them.
I'd back Pak to come out firing and attacking Eng and not be docile like in the Ravalpindi test.
All in all it will make for exciting and compelling viewing.

How’s the pitch looking?

Another road?

Babar said it’s dry and he expects spinners to play a role

But who can take Babar’s pitch reading credentials as credible?

Shoaib Akhtar has said that he thinks it will just be (more or less) the same pitch again.

There is no better batsman than shaan in the team right now,and yet he isn't playing .
Rubbish on part of Babar who seems to be very insecure of any other captaincy material in team.
He did same to imad wasim in t20s and see where is T20 squad level..During Sarfaraz era pakistan played better cricket.
Pakistan shouldn't be in awe that we played T20 final, their quality both before and during T20 worldcup was pathetic..

Pakistan will escape here as due to fog we may not get enough overs every day. Otherwise with wood coming back and our bowling don't think we stand a chance no matter the pitch. Only slight hope is Abrar surprise but not sure they will even play him.

Naseem Shah also doubtful for the 2nd test.

==

Naseem doubtful due to shoulder discomfort as per sources

At one point in England's first innings though, he threw in a ball from the boundary awkwardly, as if protecting the shoulder. He continued bowling through the rest of the Test, however, holding his shoulder occasionally but looking largely untroubled.

The niggle has carried into Multan, however, and Naseem didn't bowl at all in training on Thursday.

Ordinarily i won't be waiting for Pakistan tests to begin. England has made it a spectacle that i can't wait to see what they are going to do in the next Test. Even though it is at the expense of Pakistan, these guys are making a strong case for Test matches.

Their batting is not terrible. They still made 597 runs. Problem is bowling.

Blessing in disguise for Pakistan. He is a dreadful Test bowler. Need to replace him with someone who doesn’t leak runs like ODIs.

Shan is a rubbish batsman who averages 29 after 25 Tests & averaged 2.5 in his last series. If there is no better batsman than him in the team then that means that Pakistan’s Test status should be revoked.

Who didn't leak runs like an ODI ? He is too new to this format and dreadful pitch is no way a benchmark to decide the future of any bowler.
