After succumbing to an eight-wicket loss in the first of five one-day internationals against Australia, Pakistan will be keen to make a swift comeback in Sharjah on Sunday, 24 March.

Overview

Pakistan v Australia
2nd ODI
Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium
Sunday, 24 March, 3:00pm local time, 11:00am GMT

Pakistan looked comfortable for most of their innings after opting to bat in the opening ODI, but a flurry of wickets in the last 15 overs saw them post a below par 280/5. The run-rate too remained below 6 through the 50 overs.

Haris Sohail's century was the bright spot for the hosts in an otherwise timid batting display. They will want the rest of the line-up to make a strong claim for their spots, especially with the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019 just a couple of months away. Shan Masood and Umar Akmal, both of whom notched up 40-plus scores but could not kick on, will want to convert their starts in the second ODI.

The bowling unit, spearheaded by the experienced Mohammad Amir, was also rendered ineffective by Australia's counterpunch. Mohammad Abbas, in particular, will want to grab the opportunity with both hands. Pakistan might consider bringing in Junaid Khan for the second game.

Australia, on the other side, are brimming with confidence. After coming back from 2-0 down to win the ODI series 3-2 against India, they have made an instant statement against Pakistan as well. The team took time to find their right combination after Steve Smith and David Warner were suspended, but now seem to have turned into a well-oiled machine.

Players like Shaun Marsh and Peter Handscomb have stepped up significantly over recent weeks and have been fairly consistent in the middle order. The bowling line-up looks settled as well, with the likes of Nathan Coulter-Nile and Adam Zampa bringing their A game.

It will be interesting to see what combination Australia go for in the second ODI, considering the likes of Ashton Turner and Pat Cummins were on the bench for the series opener.

Key players

Haris Sohail (Pakistan): While Pakistan only reached 280/5 in the first ODI, Sohail played a splendid innings. He made a 114-ball 101 – his maiden century in ODI cricket – to take them to a respectable total. He will have extra motivation to keep up his good form, so as to make his case for the World Cup squad.

Aaron Finch (Australia): The Australian skipper, who struggled with bad form at the turn of the year, has found his mojo. After a decent finish against India came a match-winning century at the top of the order. Australia will be glad their skipper is back to his best in their last series before the Wolrd Cup.

Conditions

The strip in Sharjah offered almost nothing for the bowlers in the first ODI, and it is likely to remain just as flat on Sunday. The forecast is for cloudy conditions throughout the day, but with no threat of rain.

Squads

Pakistan: Imam-ul-Haq, Shan Masood, Haris Sohail, Shoaib Malik (c), Umar Akmal, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Faheem Ashraf, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Amir, Yasir Shah, Mohammad Abbas, Junaid Khan, Usman Shinwari, Abid Ali, Saad Ali, Mohammad Hasnain

Australia: Usman Khawaja, Aaron Finch (c), Peter Handscomb, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Shaun Marsh, Alex Carey (wk), Nathan Coulter-Nile, Jhye Richardson, Nathan Lyon, Adam Zampa, Ashton Turner, Pat Cummins, Kane Richardson, Jason Behrendorff

I hope that Pakistan win today, for otherwise the series might well be decided before the last match. Time for Imam-ul-Haq to step up!

Sharaj pitch offered good bounce and easy pace last match. If it remains the same then pak have no chance because Aussies like bounce and our bowlers find it hard to adjust their lengths on bouncier surfaces.

I dont see him scoring many runs and even if he does it will be at SR of 80 at best and such innings' have no impact at all on good batting surfaces

Should’ve played Amir all 5 games so that he has no excuse when he is dropped.

won't be suprised if this is an action replay of last match. aus should have replaced richardson with berendhorff. also won't be suprised if hasnain turns out to be nothing special

Inzi Idiot is adament to keep Yasir for the World Cup and Micky goes along with this. None OF Amir, Yasir, Abbas, Malik, Rizwan shouldn't be part of the team.
2-0 for Australia. Even 1 win will be plenty for this team.

Wanted PCB to give abid Ali a chance or even saad Ali , the result of the series is not important but everyone should be given a chance to see what they can do but I think for this Series one of abid or saad would only get one game of their lucky knowing how PCB works on all

It may be same like first match where we did all tuktuking or typical batting collapse.

Starc,Cummins ,Hazelwood,Richardson,Stanlake, and Coulter Nile is a better set of options than what Pakistan have.

And we are told Australian cricket is finished............

How much does it take to work out on your fitness and lose some weight?

Haris Sohail gets injured so much yet he's fat and doesn't lose weight.

Its actually other way around when a crook is our selector who loves to give opportunities to his friends.

3 lefties at the top of the order is just more signs of how clueless our think tank is. In these conditions you need to try and have a right hand and left hand combination.

Shinwari,Junaid, and Ruman aren't even close to these guys level. Hassnain and Shaheen are young. Hasan Ali and Amir are inconsistent.

The Australian attack is better.

This Australia is too good for our team should have sent Division 2 grade players to compete with.

They are our three best batsmen in the team so are batting in the top three.

This is easy for the Australian bowlers. They don't need to make any adjustments as they are bowling to 3 lefties.

Don’t understand the reason of batting first after what happened in the last game.

Pitch didnt change at all in the last game, Pak bowers didnt get any swing under lights. Its easier to chase than set up a total in current era and that is what most of the teams are doing.

You're asking too many common sense questions from our dud think tank.

This is just trailer.... movie will start in June for AUS. Right now Warner is 53* of 31......

Masood gets into the act by striking it beautifully back past the bowler

I would like to see Haris playing at number 4 in the WC with Akmal at 5 and Hafeez at 6.

No need for Malik.

Steve Smith still to come.

Just remember though,Australian cricket is finished..........

:)

Shan so classy. Would’ve easily bettered or atleast matched Imam’s performances if he had been given a chance first as he deserved. So much better to watch.

might have been good that imam got out early, now haris has enough time to build partnership with shan
