There's a lot of hype in the media right now and plenty of discussion about the Ashes everywhere where cricket is discussed. Tons of people are watching and viewers from many cricketing nations are also interested in it.

However, Pakistan vs India has always been a unique rivalry. The hype surrounding the June 4th and 18th matches was just surreal.

Anyway, it's obvious that Pakistan-India matches will have larger audiences due to the sizes of the populations.

But which rivalry is better?

Pakistan vs India

The rivalry is 100x more passionate

I doubt either Australian or England fans would break their TV sets if their teams were to lose.

Only stupid people from india and Pakistani break their tv sets. Most of the time its the tvs that don't even work anyway. Media reports it like every other person is breaking their tvs when its only the few idiots.
Breaking tvs doesn't show passion anyway it shows only stupidity. But I agree India vs Pakistan is more passionate.

Both are great but I'd go for Pak/Ind as it stands in Tests because it has been a long time since the two have played in the ultimate format and always love the intensity, cricket is generally competetive to home and away. Eng/Aus series tend to be entertaining in England but too one sided in AUS.

Ashes is a great tradition and is very important for the survival of test cricket.

Pakistan V India is on another level, one of the biggest sporting rivalries in the world. I would place it alongside Man Utd v LFC or EL-Classico.

Pak India test series have too many draws. I prefer Ashes mostly because you don't have too many dull draws.

Considering history, quality of cricket etc, the Ashes are better. But personally, India vs Pakistan is much more exciting.

13/14 Ashes was great, but 15 wasn't very exciting.

Quality of cricket? I don't see why you give that point to the Ashes, Indo-Pak encounters of old, rarely lacked quality.

Pakistan and India tests have historically played on super flat wickets (in both countries), so it's boring just like 04, 05, 06 and 07 series overall.

Pakistan vs India rivalry doesn't even exist anymore.

Yep. Harsh truth especially any Bilateral Cricket and definitely not Test Cricket. People in India now look forward to Aussie Series and don't really want sporting ties resumed with Pakistan by and large. The rivalry is kept alive by the one per year matches in ICC Events and but for the recent CT Win it would have been all done and dusted. Such a shame.

I don't know, I was never excited about India vs Pakistan test cricket. The reason might be because we played a lot of drawn games

PAK vs IND doesn't cut it in Test cricket.

Boring wickets.

Ashes is a lot of fun to watch because each session brings something unique.

I would find it surprising if Indian or Pakistani supporters found the ashes more interesting than Ind V Pak or Aussie and Pommie supporters finding Ind V Pak matches more interesting than ashes.

It would be normal to find matches your own team is playing in to be more interesting than matches without them.

True.

Would be good to hear neutrals' opinions on this...

Among them, on rivalry is purely based on Sports, while other is based on some other issues other than sports.

Other rivalry hardly exists now, while ASHES is still on fire.

So, Ashes > Pak-Indo rivalry

Ashes.... but Ind vs Pak won't happen anytime soon and even if it happens you still aren't guaranteed that it will take place every year that pretty much makes Ashes best amongst the two rivalries

India vs Pak, entire country talks about it. That aren't true about Ashes, I doubt if many ordinary English people care or know about it at all. Same goes with Aussie

It has to be Ashes ..... since Pakistan vs India is not going to happen in near future !!!!

If the production and pitch quality is the same, Indo-Pak for sure.

If the production and pitch quality is the same, Indo-Pak for sure.

This.

If Production, pitch quality and all controllable factors kept same, Indo-Pak encounters are bigger in tests by a country mile.

The Ashes was boring and one sided for decades until few years ago when England started to show up.

It's more than the pitches.

Fans don't turn up for Test cricket in these countries.

I don't watch cricket to watch other people watch cricket. Fans are a non-factor as far as entertainment is concerned. This is not the WWE.

The Pakistan vs England series way back in 2012 was highly entertaining and hardly anyone showed up to watch it live.

Which people in India doesnt want sporting ties with Pakistan? May be some dumb bhakts and they dont represent the whole india.

Pakistan vs India. Every session is played at full throttle. Ashes is good only when England have a competitive bunch. Those Ashes between 1993-2003 were some of the dullest series.

India Pakistan rivalry is quite epic in ICC tournaments. Not sure if its as worthwhile elsewhere anyways.

Even in last 12 years there have been mostly 1 sided Ashes series with Australia whitewashing England 5-0 twice and many series ending up as 3-1.

If it werent for the production quality and a few good spells of fast bowling , it wouldnt have been an enjoyable experiencs.

Australia vs India.
:39:

Except a few series that were hugely one sided, almost every ODI or test series has been high Octane consistently over the last 16+ years! Though some amount of discord & nastiness has crept in the last few years.

It would be bigger even if it was played as often. The fact its so rare adds an extra layer on top.

Here's some stats:

Since 1990:

Pak vs Ind = 14 Test Matches
Eng vs Aus = 73 Test Matches

The Ashes of course. Even when Pakistan and India have played Test matches, they have generally been pretty disappointing.

That is not a rivalry - that is one way traffic with India pounding Pakistan 9/10 times.

However, if we could build on the Champions Trophy Final thrashing and end the streak in 2019, it would change the complexion of Pakistan-India encounters in World Cups/ICC tournaments.

I’ve got a feeling the streak will be broken sooner or later. This is a generation of Pakistani cricketers who haven’t been mentally scarred by defeats to India and also they have the confidence from the CT phainty

2019 World Cup is Pakistan's best chance since 1999.

What I meant to say was that as a fan, the only time I am pumped for an India v Pakistan encounter is during ICC tournaments and the occasional Asia cup ties. When Pakistan were regularly playing India in bilateral series it really wasnt worth all the hype.

The way India have found a fierce opponent in Australia, I feel similarly Pakistan have found a fierce opponent in England

The Ashes has a big following in UK.England and Australia rivalry goes back to 1877.India Pakistan have not played many matches and I hoping they don't play any cricket with each other again (except ICC tournaments). The reason why everyone talks about cricket in India and Pakistan because they have no other sports. In UK football and rugby are very popular too.

How is this a comparison when India and Pakistan don't even play.

If we did have an Ashes like series set in place then obviously it'd be bigger. Comparing 1.2 billion ridiculously emotional people to 80 million.

Ashes in Tests, Pakistan v India in LOIs.

Agreed. There is no atmosphere in PK- Ind tests, they are played on terrible wickets in front of less people that watch a county game , whereas in the Ashes, each match is sold out and played on sporting wickets.

Atmosphere is created for India vs Pakistan matches because of non cricketing reasons. Big majority of those following such a match either fish in troubled water or they are there to make money by taking advantage of the frenzy of "fans". PCB , who keeps talking about having matches with India firmly fall in the later category.

Rahul Dravid still holds India Pakistan in high regard

"Last couple of years, we haven't had a chance to play Pakistan at any level, so it's really nice that it has panned out the way it has. Irrespective of the result, at least the guys would have got to feel what it is to play an India-Pakistan game"

Read his interview. He still thinks India Pakistan games are unique. If an All Time Great who is very much involved in cricketing affair in present time believes India-Pak games are of different intensity and atmosphere, why do some of the people especially Pakistani supporters keep insisting on saying India don't take matches with Pakistan as seriously as they used to a decade or two back.

Regardless of whether one team is no.1 and the other is no.10, I believe India-Pakistan games will always be of high intensity and an emotional thrill ride because of the nature, culture and history.

In my personal opinion, with the cessation of bilateral ties since 2007, the one-off contest become even more special now than they used to back in 2007. Hopefully the upcoming semi final will be brilliant.

The Ashes may be cricket’s oldest rivalry, but it’s no longer the biggest — or the most profitable.

The India vs Pakistan conflict is tense and fierce, fuelled by a complicated geopolitical history that includes the Partition of 1947 and three bloody wars. There’s lingering resentment between the two nations, which won’t change in the near future — but cricket unites them.

Whenever the two cricket-mad nations face off, it’s a must-watch. Emotions run high for fans and players, and the scenes can be surreal.

In terms of eyeballs and broadcast revenue, it comfortably surpasses the Ashes buzz. Approximately 988 million people watched the 2011 World Cup semi-final between India and Pakistan in Mohali, and that figure is estimated to have ballooned to over one billion when they met at Adelaide Oval four years later.

“Cricket is massive in Pakistan and India, that’s the only sport left. Hockey disappeared, squash disappeared,” said Pakistan legend Wasim Akram told Fox Cricket.

“When you guys talk about Ashes, England has 60 million people, Australia has 25 million people. Pakistan and India together? 1.6 billion people.”

Having such a passionate and wide-reaching fanbase has its downfalls. If you win, you’re hailed as a national hero, but you’re slaughtered in the media by millions if you lose.

The criticism is relentless and unforgiving.

“In our day there was no social media, so there was no pressure, unless you read a newspaper, and when I was young I hardly read a newspaper,” Akram continued.

“We have about 65 news channels in Pakistan, and India has thousands. Every day there are programs saying, ‘We’re going to win, we’re going to win’. That also adds pressure.”

India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral series in over a decade, so their contests are typically reserved for ICC events, which is a crying shame.

However, that only magnifies the anticipation.

Most recently, Virat Kohli and Babar Azam butted heads at the MCG during last year’s T20 World Cup, with 90,293 fans filling the iconic venue, absurd numbers for a neutral match. For three-and-a-bit hours, politics took a back seat.

If India had qualified for the final, it could have been the most-watched sporting event of the year.

“It’s not a war. It’s a cricket match,” Akram said.

“Somebody has to win, somebody has to lose.

“The colour, the people, the excitement. When they sit together, Indians and Pakistanis at cricket matches, they just love each other. People-to-people contact is so important.”

The rivalry resumes this weekend in Kandy for the Asia Cup, and the two nations are expected to meet again during the Super Six stage. Stakeholders will be praying India and Pakistan both qualify for the Asia Cup final on September 17.

Pakistan was originally slated to host the entire tournament, but nine of the 13 matches have been moved to Sri Lanka because India refused to cross the border.

Over the past 24 months, Pakistan has welcomed the likes of Australia, England and New Zealand, but due to ongoing political tensions and safety concerns, India is still reluctant to take the plunge.

The BCCI has all the power. What they say goes.

“That’s politics. Politics should be apart from sports,” Akram said.

“It is a frustration for Pakistan, of course. I think things are fine as far as our security is concerned. Our security agencies are the best in the world because they’ve been through a lot.

“Imagine if Pakistan said they were not going to India for the World Cup.”

Pakistan has not played an ODI in India since January 2013, but that ten-year drought will end next month.

The World Cup gets underway on October 5, and Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, a mountainous sporting coliseum, will host the blockbuster India vs Pakistan match on October 14. There will be 132,000 vocal fans cheering Pakistan’s every mistake, a daunting prospect for any athlete.

“If there’s a pin-drop silence, that means you’re doing well,” Akram laughed.

However, there are lingering safety fears ahead of the marquee tournament — earlier this month, Hyderabad Police requested for the World Cup schedule to be adjusted because they could not organise security arrangements for back-to-back games, including Pakistan’s match against Sri Lanka at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on October 10.

“I hope Pakistani fans can get an easy visa to India,” Akram said.

“As a Pakistani, if I go to India, I need a visa for every city. If I get a visa for Delhi, I can’t go to Bombay. I can’t go to any other city. Same vice versa for Indians if they come to Pakistan.

“Pakistanis who travel to India, they’re going to get looked after beautifully, that’s part of their culture.

“Indians do welcome their cricket teams. I remember when we toured in 1999 when there was a threat to us on that tour. We had presidential security. Wherever we went, we got looked after. The food is amazing, the hospitality is one of the best in the world.”

Last week, Pakistan was proclaimed the No. 1 ODI team in the world, leapfrogging Australia on the ICC rankings after their series victory over Afghanistan. The Pakistanis have won 17 of their 20 most recent ODIs, including Wednesday’s thumping 238-run victory over Nepal in the Asia Cup opener.

Captain Babar Azam is No.1 on the ODI batting rankings, while Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman also sit in the top five. Pakistan also boasts a world-class pace trio of Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah.

However, pundits are almost exclusively predicting that either India, England or Australia will win this year’s World Cup.

“I like Pakistan to be underrated, underdogs,” declared Akram, who will feature as part of Fox Cricket’s coverage of the Asia Cup and World Cup.

“I don’t want them to go in as favourites. If you are a low-key team, you have a chance, and the Pakistan team has got the right preparation going.

“As far as preparation is concerned, physical preparation, mental preparation, getting used to the conditions, the pitches, the weather … their preparation is on the right track.

“They look happy, they look settled, they are winning, so everything is going well.

“They’re right up there as favourites, no doubt.”

any day any time Pakistan vs India.. It is a rivalry that goes beyond cricket, capturing the imagination of millions and creating moments of intense emotion and excitement in the world of sports.

Some may not like it but read what the President of BCCI said about this rivalry

"As your Excellency said that India-Pakistan is one of the biggest games that is played. I can tell you, sir. When India plays Pakistan, everything comes to a standstill"

"People don't work, the roads are empty. Everybody's in front of the television watching cricket. That's how big cricket is in India and Pakistan,"
