How is it possible to live with so much shame and ignominy? No political family in Pakistan’s history has amassed so much wealth while in power. No family in Pakistan’s history has had to put up with so much humiliation. Anyone else only slightly less thick-skinned would have fled Pakistan’s political shores long ago. We have to hand it to the Sharifs that they are made of some special material. Shame seems not to affect them the way it would lesser mortals.
In the end when all the JIT reading is done what leaves you aghast, and not a little shaken, is the squalid nature of the things that the Sharifs as a family have been involved in all these years---lies upon lies, systematic deceit, money-laundering on a vast scale, and offshore companies to hide the trails leading to all the properties in London.
As remarkable as the scale of the fraud were the masks of piety and self-righteousness donned throughout. Even as political power was traded and manipulated for setting up factories and accumulating wealth by any means not a prayer, no religious observance, was missed. The last ten days of Ramzan were invariably spent in the Holy Land. Equally remarkable is the fact that the Sharifs remained popular political figures.
Luck was on their side and the army and security agencies---what in Pakistan we call the establishment---picked on them as a counterweight to the PPP. The Sharifs had no political background whatsoever but the agencies, in a bid to downgrade the power and appeal of the PPP, propped them up and turned them into redoubtable political figures.
The elder Sharif, the patriarch of the clan whose name figures so prominently in the Qatari letters, was a canny individual with a knack for coming close to and currying favour with the military elite that dominated Pakistan in the Zia era. From out of nowhere Nawaz Sharif was picked as finance minister by then Punjab governor, Lt Gen Jillani. Following the 1985 non-party elections Nawaz Sharif was Gen Zia’s choice as Punjab chief minister.
There was no stopping the Sharifs thereafter. They were the owners of one company, Ittefaq Foundry. Exploiting their new-found political cleft they set up one factory after another, to the point where they were masters of an industrial empire. Even so, to all appearances, they thought this was not enough. In the early 1990s, by which time Nawaz Sharif with help from the same holy establishment had become prime minister, began the quest to transfer abroad the money accumulating in Pakistan. That is when the Mayfair flats became Sharif property.
These were familiar stories and people in the know knew what was going on. The existence of the Mayfair flats was first revealed in the London press---in an article in the Observer, if memory serves me right. Raymond Baker in his book ‘Capitalism’s Achilles’ Heel’ provided details of Nawaz Sharif’s corruption. But nothing seemed to touch Nawaz Sharif who seemed proof against all charges. Cases were filed against him in Musharraf’s time but before anything could come of them his Saudi benefactors had come to his rescue and taken him off to Jeddah.
When Musharraf’s rule entered its twilight period, the fatal hour before downfall sets in, Nawaz Sharif was able to return to Pakistan, again with Saudi help because Prince Abdallah’s pitch was that if Benazir Bhutto could make a comeback why not their protégé.
Thus was set the stage for Nawaz Sharif’s third stint as prime minister. Pakistanis are a gullible lot and easily fooled. By the beginning of 2016 there was no shortage of pundits who were saying that Nawaz Sharif was certain to win the 2018 elections, these wiseacres probably never having heard of Harold Wilson’s caveat that a week is a long time in politics.
So it was that just when everything seemed the most propitious for Nawaz Sharif, including the fact that his bête noire Gen Raheel Sharif was soon to be on his way out, struck the thunderbolt that we know as the Panama Papers. In them was revealed the fact what we all knew but had no means of proving that Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Safdar owned a string of Panama-based offshore companies.
Had it been up to Pakistan’s other political parties the issue would have been buried and soon forgotten. But there is no one more indefatigable on the Pakistani political scene than Imran Khan and he picked it up and wouldn’t let it die. He started a political campaign and addressed public rallies blasting Nawaz Sharif’s corruption. The Jamaat-i-Islami’s Sirajul Haq also took a stand while Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Pakistan’s leading political maverick, stood with Imran Khan. Other politicians were neither here nor there. And there was the media especially the talk shows which every evening for an entire year spoke of nothing but the Panama Papers.
Only the death-blow remained and that was dealt by the JIT whose findings are so exhaustive and meticulous---and backed by solid, documentary evidence---that nothing is left to the imagination. No praise is enough for the JIT or indeed for the Supreme Court without whose clear-cut direction and protection none of this would have been possible. It is not just one man but the entire family which stands nailed to the mast accused of serial falsehoods and deceitful conduct.
But the Sharifs are a tough lot and their brazenness is nothing short of amazing. Doing their best to rubbish the JIT report---in which they are not succeeding---they are trying to hold on. But the ground has shifted from under their feet and their luck has run out. The JIT report is too damning and provides ground for Nawaz Sharif’s disqualification not just once but many times over. It is only a matter of time. Nor will this be all. There is also the danger of criminal cases and a NAB reference being filed against Nawaz Sharif.
This has been a long time in coming but finally we have it before us, proving once again, if proof was needed, that the mills of God grind slowly but grind exceeding small. Pakistan has been a luckless country on many counts. Imagine these leaders we’ve had for such a long time. Look at their conduct and their small minds and the total absence of anything that could be defined as morality. But their time is up, that’s the writing on the wall.
This was the work of 60 years which the JIT has completed in 60 days. Few people thought this possible. Now circles loyal to the ruling party are saying that this work would not have been possible without help from the agencies. Far from being a matter of concern this goes to show the foresight of the judges who while constituting the JIT held that representatives from the ISI and Military Intelligence should be part of it. So whatever the agencies did was under orders from the Supreme Court.
This is not just any other case. It will have profound consequences for the country’s future. A corrupt political order which has been around for the longest in Pakistani’s history, longer than any martial law, is finally on its way out. Whatever else happens this will be no mean achievement. Great as the sins of the Pakistani people may be they deserved better than such dodgers and financial artists, a euphemism for con men, as their rulers.

You forgot me too. I joined this forum to spread anti-Nawaz/PML-N propaganda
Mushy jailed them.I want to see this Mafiose family behind bars.
Govt to file objections to the SC over the JIT report. It seems like nothing substantial will come out of the findings and ultimately, they will be declared null and void. I do not see Nawaz Sharif being disqualified.
Mushy jailed them.
You can fiend NS's jailed picture on net.
But then he returned.
So you can count him out.
Bhai I watched this full show. Nobody can beat Nawaz. 90% of Noon respondents said they will still vote for Sher and he has done nothing wrong. Iss mulk ka Allah hi hafiz hai.

You are right there is huge blind following for NS but to me it looks like a planted show because in same constituency of NS husband of Meher i mean Kashif Abbasi did a show last year and most people were bashing Nawaz for Panama Leaks.
It was not 90%, it was more like:
19 PMLN
12 PTI
Still a great result in Nawaz's own constituency.
No no I was talking about just Noon supporters. Only a handful of Noon supporters were agreeing that he is guilty and should go.

This is being played again and again all over the media. I wonder why he said that when he himself has been appointed by NS directly... maybe he was referring to someone else but is being interpreted incorrectly.
Mamnoon Hussain is probably chilling somewhere completely unaware of this chaos going on![]()

ISLAMABAD:
A three-judge of the Supreme Court is all set to examine tomorrow (Monday) the Joint Investigation Team (JIT)’s damning report on the murky offshore business dealings of the Sharif family, but the ruling family has yet to come up with a clear legal strategy.
Only a day before the Supreme Court hearing, the Sharif family contacted members of their previous legal team that appeared before a five-judge larger bench in the Panamagate case. However, none of its members is available to plead the case.
Sources told The Express Tribune that Makhdoom Ali Khan, who had represented Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif during the Panamagate hearings, is engaged in London and Washington and will not be available for the next few weeks.
“Similarly, Shahid Hamid, the counsel for Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Maryam Nawaz and her husband Safdar, is also on general adjournment till August 10 as he is also abroad.
“The family has contacted Salman Akram Raja, but it is yet to be confirmed that he would appear on behalf of Hussain Nawaz and Hassan Nawaz on Monday,” a source said.
However, Raja is also scheduled to fly abroad next week. The family has also contacted senior lawyer Khalid Anwar but surprisingly he has not consented to representing any of its member.
Sources claim the family has started contacting its previous legal team on the advice of Khawaja Haris, who is supervising the legal strategy in connection with the JIT report and he is continuously in touch with Premier Sharif and his family for the last two months.
Haris has advised separate counsel for each respondent and even offered to withdraw his services if the previous team showed willingness to appear before the court. However, the family wants to retain him as Sharif’s counsel.
Senior PML-N lawyers wonder why the ruling family is contacting other counsels at the eleventh hours, instead of relying on Haris. “I have already advised the family that no one knows the case better than Khawaja Haris and they should rely on him,” said a member of the previous legal team.
Another PML-N’s legal wizard said the Sharif family should have known from day one that they would need a counsel for every respondent as Haris could not represent every one of them technically.
“This is rather their apathy that the case is listed for Monday (tomorrow) but no objections have been filed yet. Does this mean the prime minister and his family have accepted the report?” he wondered.
The lawyer called it ‘a huge faux pas’ that objections on the JIT report were not filed on Saturday, adding that it was not only a legal but more importantly a political failure as they needed to show the people and the world about their point of view and grievances against the report.
However, this is not the first time the Sharif family’s legal strategy has been criticised by the party’s lawyers.
Firstly, the family was represented by Salman Aslam Butt and Sheikh Akram. Later, both were replaced by Makhdoom Ali Khan, Salman Akram Raja and Shahid Hamid. Khawaja Haris was the only counsel, who has assisted the family before the JIT.
However, it is expected that the final strategy will be devised in today’s (Sunday) meeting in which they will decide whether they should seek time from the court or file objections to the JIT report, which have already been drafted by Haris
In a related development, the Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) office has submitted transcripts of the speeches of three PML-N leaders – Khawaj Saad Rafique, Talal Chaudhry and Asif Karmani – who allegedly targeted the JIT.
The AGP office has also submitted details of the value of advertisements, which have been given to TV channels since April. It is learnt that Geo TV has got Rs23,028,320 worth advertisements during the said time.
Since July 10, when the JIT report was submitted in the Supreme Court, the premier has avoided attending any public event and is focusing on internal huddles and party meet-ups to map out the future strategy.
A number of public gatherings, including those being organised in connection with Pakistan’s 70th Independence Day have been postponed following Sharif’s decision to keep a low-profile as far as public events are concerned, The Express Tribune has learnt.
Instead, Sharif is devoting most of his time to consultative sessions with his political and legal aides to deal with the challenges posed by the JIT report amidst resonating calls for him to step down.
Sources told The Express Tribune that some senior leaders of the PML-N have advised Sharif to avoid public gatherings for the next few days and wait till the apex court resumes hearing of Panamagate case and then formulate a strategy depending upon how the proceedings of the case unfold.
Sources said top PML-N leaders, including Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Leader of the House in Senate Raja Zafarul Haq, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Defence Production Minister Rana Tanvir Ahmad Khan are not in favour of developing hostility with the judiciary.
They believe that any aggressive public statement from Sharif about the judiciary could end up creating more problems for the ruling party.
On the other hand, another powerful group of aides, including Khawaja Asif, Saad Rafique, Ishaq Dar and Ahsan Iqbal, are of the view that Sharif should mobilise public in the face of ongoing crisis.
The group, sources said, insist that the Sharif family’s legal team submit ‘strong’ objections against the JIT report in the apex court.
However, the PM’s legal wizards are concerned that if the top court shoots down the objections raised by the respondents, the Sharif family would hardly be left with any workable option in its defence.
LAHORE: No ‘bird’ will fly from the PML-N camp this time around even if its leader is sent packing in the Panama Papers case, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was assured by his comrades in a recent meeting in Islamabad.
But some in the opposition PTI are certain that once the premier resigns or gets disqualified, it is a matter of time that the PML-N will be in “complete disarray”.
“The prime minister has been told by his close aides that gone are the days when his party’s members chan*ged their loyalties in testing times like the Musharraf era. This time around we have spoken to a number of party legislators ‘suspected of changing their loyalties’ but they are of the view that in their constituencies the vote is that of Nawaz Sharif and no one will take the risk of leaving the party because of this fact,” a senior PML-N leader told Dawn here on Saturday.
Some of the premier’s comrades who are not in favour of his resignation have also boasted of likening the post-Nawaz situation to that of Turkey where last July people thronged the roads to thwart a military coup. “All those who are close to the premier are upbeat that if he is sent home the reaction of the people will not be less than that of Turkey’s,” the leader said.
Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf vice chairman Shah Mah*mood Qureshi, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid president Chaudhry Shujaat Husain, Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rashid and PML-N’s disgruntled veteran leader Sardar Zulfi*qar Khosa have predicted ‘large-scale defections’ from the ruling party the moment the bells of Mr Sharif’s departure ring. Some of them even put the number of legislators intending to leave the PML-N at around 100.
“A good number of the PML-N legislators in contact with the PTI are awaiting the moment to say goodbye to it (PML-N) as they are opposed to their party’s policy to go into a confrontation with the judiciary in the Panama Papers case. Unlike the PML-N hawks, they want Mr Sharif to shun his stubbornness and resign to let someone else replace him in parliament,” Mr Qureshi said.
He said cracks were visible in the PML-N camp and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan’s reported episode was enough to prove the point. Mr Sharif better listen to the saner voices in his party and resign forthwith because he had lost both the moral and legal authority to stick to his office after the joint investigation team’s revelations in its report about his and his children’s offshore holdings, he said.
When asked about the PML-N’s confidence that there won’t be large-scale defections this time, he said: “Let the premier go home.”
Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said the party had “checked” with its members and “I can guarantee that not a single MNA or MPA from Punjab will defect to the PTI or form a forward bloc”.
“This time around things have changed completely. If the premier is sent packing, let me tell you, the PML-N will return to power with an overwhelming majority. “Besides, there will be a very strong reaction of the masses if the prime minister is disqualified... perhaps no one has figured it out yet.”
The minister said the legislators knew the ground realities. “Politicians are smart enough to know the ground realities of their constituencies. The political career of those who left the Sharifs in the past ended. This in not 1999 — public support is with the Sharifs and our party’s men know this.”

I googled it Daniyal Aziz, it doesn't say ''seems'' means a joke. It used the word joke to elaborate the meaning of ''seems''.
What an idiot, can't even read English.
