Englishman Laurie Evans fired the Perth Scorchers out of serious trouble and to a competitive total of 6-171 in the KFC BBL final against the Sydney Sixers.

Decimated by COVID-19 infections and injuries, the Sixers were given almost no chance of upstaging the star-studded Scorchers at Marvel Stadium.

But Sixers captain Moises Henriques, who carried a calf injury into the contest, elected to bowl first and was immediately rewarded by his bowlers.

The Scorchers collapsed to 4-25 after Test star Nathan Lyon dismissed Australia's Twenty20 World Cup hero Mitch Marsh and the dangerous Colin Munro in quick succession.

But Scorchers captain Ashton Turner (54 from 35 balls) and Evans hit back in style, putting on a 104-run partnership to keep the Western Australia franchise back in the running to clinch a fourth title.

Evans' batting was a class above, hitting two magnificent cover drives for six, to finish with an unbeaten 76 from 41 balls.

Despite multiple players being unavailable, the Sixers' request to bring in Australian superstar Steve Smith was knocked back by Cricket Australia.

It was determined that there was adequate batting cover available for the Sixers in the local replacement pool.

Henriques and veteran spinner Stephen O'Keefe are both battling through calf issues.

Assistant coach Jay Lenton, who last played a BBL game back in February 2020 before his hasty call-up for the Sixers' dramatic final, is again acting as wicketkeeper due to Josh Phillipe testing positive for COVID-19.

Nick Bertus, who is playing in just his second BBL game, will open the batting with Hayden Kerr, the Sixers' hero against the Adelaide Strikers two nights ago.

It is the fifth time the Scorchers and Sixers have faced each other in the title decider, and both franchises have been crowned champions three times.
