A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) airhostess has allegedly been charged with shoplifting in Toronto.

According to media reports, Maria Akhund landed in Toronto from Lahore via PIA flight PK797. Akhund was caught stealing in CCTV footage of the department store.

The department store management handed over the footage to police who interrogated the airhostess and the flight captain.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, PIA spokesperson Danyal Gilani said, “Investigations are underway, and strict action will be taken against the airhostess if found guilty.” Akhund is set to return to Pakistan today, the spokesperson added.

In August last year, the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) claimed to have arrested a senior PIA airhostess from Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport in connection with an attempt to smuggle gold to the United States (US).

A case was registered against Nuzhat Bukhari, a senior airhostess of the national flag carrier, after two kilogrammes of gold were recovered from her luggage during a routine search at the airport, sources told The Express Tribune. The suspect reportedly confessed that she was trying to smuggle gold from Lahore to New York via PIA flight PK-721. The woman was later handed over to Customs officials for further investigation.

More grim news for an airline that is clearly struggling.

I remember reading about how they were doing it in Manchester a few years ago. Very strange behaviour.

Police in Manchester have met officials of an international airline over claims that cabin crew have been caught shoplifting in the city.

Police requested the meeting with Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) over concerns raised by retailers.

The PIA staff are accused of stealing goods from key retailers and hotels in the city centre.

The airline said it was taking the claims seriously and anyone found to have acted illegally would be sacked.

An email from Supt Stuart Ellison to PIA, which was subsequently leaked to the Pakistani press, said: "Some stores are regularly detaining cabin crew for shoplifting offences. Goods of a relatively low value have been stolen.

"Hotels where the airline crews have stayed have also reported items such as towels, kettles, gowns and glasses being taken."

'Reputation at stake'

The officer also disclosed that when the alleged thieves were caught they had told store staff they were not British nationals and were due to return to Pakistan the next day.

If a person is charged with an illegal act, he or she will be dismissed from the service
Nobody has been arrested so far as police have not made any formal investigations.

In the email Supt Ellison said the airline's "reputation was at stake because if a hotel filed a complaint, police would have to take action and detain the suspect/s and without a backup or standby crew available the aircraft might be delayed".

The majority of the thefts have been in the Market Street and Cross Street areas.

PIA public relations general manager, Sultan Hassan told BBC Asian Network: "We are taking the allegation seriously.

"Our local office in Manchester had a detailed meeting with the police a few weeks ago and our new manager there will also meet with them in a few weeks."

He added: "The cabin crew is properly briefed, we have proper procedures to deal with this.

"If a person is charged with an illegal act, he or she will be dismissed from the service."

Mr Hassan said nobody had been arrested and detectives had not passed on the names of any individuals "or indeed any proof that this has actually happened".

A GMP statement said: "We are working alongside the company and have gained their support to ensure such incidents do not take place again."

Soon they'll be seeking asylum in UK or Canada. Anything to get away from Nawaz Sharif's corruption and Imran Khan's "tabdeeli ah nehin rehi, tabdeeli ageyi hai" nonsense. This must be the tabdeeli he has been raving about.

:)). PIA should let its employees sell merchandise on planes so they could make extra money. It's obvious they don't get paid enough. What's next, PIA folks run away to work at McDonalds in western countries.

This is just sad. They are stealing, a big offence, but someone needs to find out why they do it? They should be lucky they have a job in today's world, but are they not paid enough? Could that be the reason they are stealing?

I am In sha Allah travelling win PIA to Pakistan next month:/

Did you know PIA pilots no longer stay in the same hotels as their cabin crew, a while back some staff were caught sub letting their hotel rooms to members of public while they opted to stay with relatives instead.

How much is the pay. I think the pay might be very low since things are happenning..

I dont think Kleptomania is linked to lack of money. Many famous rich actresses has been caught shop lifting. Winnona ryder is one example

They should thank their stars that a PIA plane didnt land on top of their shop. That would have taken some "shop lifting".

PIA air hostess arrested in Paris for shoplifting

A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) air hostess was arrested on Monday night in Paris for shoplifting at a shopping centre, PIA sources told DawnNews.

The air hostess, Afshan Khalid, was spotted by CCTV cameras as she stole items, prompting the shopping centre's security personnel to apprehend her and hand her over to the police, said a source in the national airline.

Khalid was detained by French authorities for five hours and released after PIA's station manager in Paris posted her bail, PIA sources said.

PIA management has taken notice of the incident and have ordered a full investigation into the matter, Yaqoob PIA's general manager flight services, told DawnNews.

Yaqoob added that the air hostess will be barred from flying on any international flight for a duration of six months.

"Once the investigation is complete, strict action will be taken against Afshan Khalid," he added.

Google and you'll see that many rich, including famous household names, have been known to shoplift.

Why do well-off people shoplift?

Chef Antony Worrall Thompson
has apologised for shoplifting from a supermarket. But what makes people steal things when they have enough money to pay?

PIA air hostess arrested for smuggling expensive mobile phones

A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) air hostess and two passengers were arrested, as Customs officials at Lahore's Allama Iqbal International Airport thwarted an attempt to smuggle more than 65 high-value mobile phones.

The incident unfolded in two separate operations on flights arriving from Dubai.

In the first operation, Customs officials intercepted Nadia Batool, a PIA air hostess, as she attempted to smuggle 30 mobile phones. According to Customs sources, Batool had concealed the phones in various parts of her body. The estimated value of the recovered mobile phones is over Rs10 million.

In a separate operation, a couple, Arshad and Fariha, who had arrived on another flight from Dubai, were found with 37 mobile phones attached to their bodies. Customs officials seized the phones, and the couple was immediately taken into custody.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the smuggling attempt, and all three individuals have been arrested pending further legal action.
