[PICTURES/VIDEOS] Babar Azam's performance watch as captain for Peshawar Zalmi

Peshawar Zalmi's pacer Naveen-ul-Haq recently shed light on playing under the captaincy of Babar Azam in PSL 9. He shared this information during an interview in a podcast:

"From what I have seen, [he is] very chilled, very relaxed. At this stage, you cannot say things to your bowlers or fielders at every instance, you have to step up whenever it is required. All this can be seen [in Babar’s captaincy], we are all enjoying much under his captaincy."

“Communication with Babar is very easy, we are both very calm personalities, and there have been no problems between us so far. I believe that when you are calm on the field, it benefits your team."

“There comes a time when you are having difficulty on the field or you lose, that time you need a leader who remains calm and keeps the team intact."

“If your captain starts to get aggressive and hyper, then it becomes difficult for the entire team. In our first [PSL] match in Multan, I observed that Babar bhai was very calm, everything has been good."

Babar Azam was dismissed in the powerplay, run out by Alex Hales, who sent him to the pavilion without letting him play a single ball against Islamabad United. Now, Lahore Qalandars' Rassie van der Dussen has a chance to earn the Hanif Mohammad Cap in the next match.

Another 50 for BA.. Just showing his class in this PSL, this time it was against MS.

Babar owns PSL. He kept Karachi relevant all those years and carried them to the title but they didn’t give him the respect that he deserves.

Before that it was Misbah’s Islamabad that that failed to recognize his talent and let him go.

However, now he has found his home in Peshawar. He is loved and respected and you can see how happy he is and how much he loves playing for them. This is going to be a long association.

Babar deserves all the praise for his recent form. Hope he carries it to the international as well moving forward. Having a sensational PSL so far.

Mohammad Hafeez speaking about Babar Azam during a TV show:

“We have seen many good T20 players, but there is an unrealistic consistency in Babar Azam. I have never seen such consistency in my career. People should focus on his positive aspects rather than the negatives. I believe that Babar is evolving his cricket. His strike rate in T20 is improving significantly. He is incorporating new shots, but his extraordinary consistency is very special.”

Babar is the best opener in Pakistan right now.

Bit of a headache for Shaheen and the management to decide how to order their top 4 of Rizwan, Saim, Babar and Fakhar.

Babar should be opening with Saim for Pakistan. It is Rizwan that needs to be dropped down the order.

Babar should be opening with Saim for Pakistan. It is Rizwan that needs to be dropped down the order.

It’s definitely tempting.

Babar has great chemistry with both players. But he’s the common denominator so really he should be the opener.

In this PSL 9, Babar has not just improved his strike rate, he has also improved his shot selections

In this PSL 9, we have been praising Babar for his improvement in strike rate, and today, against Karachi Kings, he is playing with a strike rate of only 94.

Fact is he is a nothing player, good only for low level T20 cricket.

Babar scored his 5th half-century of this PSL, made 51 off 46 deliveries and was looking good but unfortunately he got run out on a close call.

By far the best player and captain of the tournament. He is going to walk the player of the tournament award again.

Babar Azam with another player of the match performance as Peshawar Zalmi's captain.

Really impressed with Babar the captain and how he's handling youngsters. Saim, Haris, Haseebullah, all got to play in the top order. Aamer Jamal given confidence to bowl the last over. Have a feeling that Babar's actually serious for this WC.

You seem quite conflicted on Babar.

At times you say he is the best player for Pakistan ever.

Other times you consider Sharma, Rahul, Jaiswal and Gill all better than him.

You should make up your mind whether Babar is a match winner or not.

In a post-match interview Babar Azam spoke about his match-winning inning against Karachi Kings:

"Today it wasn't an easy pitch it was quite difficult because I wasn't expecting that much turn on this wicket neither does it usually. I think the match started late at night so the behavior of the pitch changed. Initially when I checked the wicket it seemed a bit hard more like a typical Karachi pitch. However, when I started my innings the fast bowlers were getting swing and spinners were finding grip and turn. So yeah it was a difficult wicket and to bat on such a track you need to stick with basic cricketing shots. Usually you aim to score at a rate of 9 or maybe 10 runs per over but I was trying to play at 6 runs per over planning to catch up later. In my mind the target was around 160."

"I was under a lot of pressure and I felt that I could also have to bowl so I completed my warm-up and went to the ground. However our bowler Saim Ayub bowled exceptionally well adhering to the demands of the pitch especially created pressure on Karachi's batsmen during the middle overs."

"As a captain when you have a complete and experienced bowling lineup you remain confident. I also had complete confidence that the bowlers would execute the plan well and they did it really well. Our fielding also played a vital role."

Pakistan has an awful batting legacy. All of our great batsmen are substandard if you compare them to their Indian counterparts.

Babar is nothing special if you compare him to established Indian batting greats or the upcoming Indian batsmen, but he is amazing when you compare him to Pakistani batsmen.

It took 30-40 years for Pakistan to produce a batsman like him and it will take maybe another two decades to produce another batsman like him because Pakistan is the least talented and skilled cricket nation in the world with the least number of quality players.

It gets very embarrassing when you start comparing Pakistani batsmen with Indian batsmen. For example, Jaiswal is 10x better than Saeed Anwar but Pakistan has failed to produce a better opener 20 years into his retirement.

Babar cult fans have invited unwarranted criticism because they started comparing him to Kohli, a miles better batsman than anyone Pakistan has ever produced.

Kohli belongs in the pantheons of batting legends alongside Tendulkar, Lara, Ponting, Sir Viv. Babar is clearly not in the league and when you start forcing him into comparisons with Kohli, his deficiencies will be highlighted.

I have come to appreciate Babar for who he is and what he represents. It is a miracle for a deeply mediocre cricket nation like Pakistan to produce someone of his batting class and all the people who criticize him 24/7 will realize his value once he retires because it is extremely unlikely that Pakistan will produce another batsman of his class any time soon.

I think he will get at least 2 matches to play in this PSL so it's very likely that he will surpass Fakhar Zaman.

Babar Azam completes 1000 T20 runs in 2024

He has passed this milestone for the 5th time in his career.

a slow but commanding inning of babar azam came to an end, he scored 46 runs off 42 deliveries in all important qualifier of PSL 9.

During Qualifier 1 at Karachi's National Bank Stadium, Babar Azam, leading Peshawar Zalmi, surpassed the 500-run milestone in PSL season nine. This achievement marked his third instance of achieving such a feat in a single edition of the PSL.

Previously, he amassed 554 runs in the 2021 edition and 522 runs in 2023. It's noteworthy that only Mohammad Rizwan had achieved 500 or more runs in three editions of the PSL. Rizwan accomplished this feat in 2021 with 500 runs, followed by 546 runs in 2022 and 550 runs in 2023.

Furthermore, Babar Azam's overall performance in the 2024 season saw him crossing the 1000-run mark during the same match against Multan Sultans in the Qualifiers. Achieving this milestone after 21 matches, Babar maintained an impressive strike-rate of over 135.

I thought Babar had improved his strike rate but he reverted back to his classic slow innings during the all important qualifier.

Babar Azam at post-match presentation after losing the qualifier against Multan Sultans

"Good start but lost wickets in middle overs. Thought 160-170 was par but couldn't finish well. They bowled well, so I tried to build innings but got out early. If I had stayed maybe it would've been different scenario."

A good few words for those who believe they have a better understanding of cricket than Michael Clarke, the captain who led his team to a World Cup victory.

-------------------

Michael Clarke speaking during the commentary in Peshawar Zalmi vs Multan Sultans' qualifier game:

“Another thing for Babar as well: you can see that he has faced 42 balls. However, I feel like on every occasion when he was ready to accelerate, they lost a wicket. So, he had to pull back. He had to be the one to stay there, be patient, and wait for his time. He did get an absolute jaffa of a delivery from Chris Jordan as well.”

Babar needs just 45 runs to achieve the '𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐒𝐋' milestone.

Can he get there tonight?

Fakhar Zaman - 588 (PSL 7)
Babar Azam - 554 (PSL 6)
Mohammad Rizwan - 550 (PSL 8)
Babar Azam - 544* (PSL 9)

The same Lahore who didn't pick him in his early days due to Akmals, Farhats and Butts and Babar had to start his career from Islamabad Region? I still remember Babar playing for Islamabad leopords in 13/14.

Time will prove that Babar is in the same league too inshaAllah. He has a long career to go. :)

I will be very happy and proud if he does and every Pakistani cricket supporter should be, but even if he doesn’t, he is still much much better than 99% of the batsmen that have represented Pakistan in international cricket.

The bottom-line is that Babar’s impressive captaincy in this PSL has made a lot of people upset.

The fact that the “intellectual” and “sophisticated” Masood proved to be the worst captain of the tournament has only added salt to wounds.

No wonder people like @topspin are so annoyed.

Babar Azam has scored 544 runs in PSL 2024. No other batter has even scored 400.

1710606004865.png

Babar Azam once again struggled with a poor strike rate against Islamabad United in PSL 9 eliminator 2. I don't understand when his issue with strike rate will improve.

Exposed once again. You can score all the useless runs, but what matters as an opener is how you play the PP/SR.

Thought Saeed Anwar in the mid nineties up to the point where he retired temporarily due to his daughter's death, was even better than Sachin / Sanath..

Babar is Pakistan's most consistent batsman, however, I don't see him deserving a place in Pakistan's XI for the T20 WC.

He can't play spin, so he will not fit in to the middle order. There are better openers than Babar, so he won't be the ideal opener either. Nor should he be batting at 3, because one of Fakhar or Rizwan deserves that spot.

Guys its a Babar Azam thread so plz switch to other relevant threads for any off topic discourse.

By far the best captain of the tournament. The way he handled his weak resources was great to watch. Opening the bowling with Saim proved to be a master-stroke.

I support and endorse the decision of Babar getting back the captaincy in all formats if Shaheen doesn't get back to his best with the ball. I think Babar did an incredible job as captain in this tournament and his batting was terrific as always.

He batted better than he usually does but he still lets the game drift too much when he is captain.

He did have very weak bowling resources but still should have tried to kill the game a bit more today.

Beautiful reality check for his fans

Nothing unlucky about that when he's not even capable of functioning as a captain. This should be the very last time for him to be in charge of a PSL franchise.

The funniest thing is a peculiar individual has recently entered the pro-Babar camp after spending most of his years on here bashing him but now wants him to be reinstated as Pakistan captain.

Babar captained and batted very well this tournament however in the end he let the game drift with his defensiveness which cost PZ the game and the final.

Another extremely dominant batting display from Babar this tournament.

Leading run scorer of the tournament as well as having the most 4’s of any player. I haven’t seen the recalculated numbers after today’s match but Babar had the highest SR of any player in the PP overs.

In this PSL, Babar Azam has achieved the highest strike rate of 152.94 during the Powerplay, which is the highest among all batters. What’s even more remarkable is that his average during this phase is 260, demonstrating both his speed and consistency. Interestingly, his average in the Powerplay is due to a run out, not a dismissal by any bowler.

He averaged 57 at a SR of 142 with 5 50’s and 1 100. PZ needs to pick up some bowling talent next year and then they can easily make a run for the championship.

Only to choke like always when it mattered the most. Pathetic innings yesterday. Saim and Haris showed him how to bat. His tuk tuk cost Zalmi big time.

What aging are we talking about here - do you even understand what the term aging means?

I wrote this after Zalmi’s defeat last night. I stand by what I said and I won’t change my mind on how impressive Babar’s captaincy was in this tournament.

He had the weakest bowling attack in the tournament and it was weakened further midway due to Naveen’s unavailability, but he managed to have them punch above their weight and got the best out of them.

He should be proud of the way he captained the team and we look forward to him returning next year with a better bowling attack and these brilliance with the bat.

It is an honour and privilege for Zalmi to have the greatest contemporary Pakistani cricketer and the biggest superstar of Pakistan cricket to play for and captain the franchise.

Javed Afridi has been rightfully criticized for not paying enough attention to the cricket side of things and using the Zalmi branding to expand his footprint but he gave the Zalmi fans a wonderful gift by acquiring Babar.

This is going to be a long association because Babar loves playing for Zalmi, he is at home here and he has received the respect, love and affection that he deserves.

When you think that you won the game already but there is still half of the game left, then you will loose in the end. I think Naveen's unavailability was one of the factors that cost Zalmi this game.

------------------------

Babar Azam speaking in an interview after losing the Eliminator 2 against Islamabad United:

“After 10 overs, we were in a good position. However, the way we bowled was very poor. After 10 overs, we were not up to the mark because we thought we had already won the match. I believe the credit goes to Imad Wasim and Haider Ali for the way they played.”

“Although the conditions remained the same, we could not execute our plans. When you don’t follow your plans, the results become evident. After the first 10 overs, we were ahead in the game, but from then on, our bowling performance was ordinary, leading to Islamabad’s victory in the end.”

Cricket is a team game. One player cannot and should not be expected to carry you through every single match in a tournament.

Harris had a horrible tournament and would not have been able to score runs yesterday if Babar had not carried the entire team this far.

Life can change but one thing is certain.

Babar wont win you any silverware.

Babar carried his team throughout the entire tournament. He was the highest run getter and averaged an incredible 57 @ 142 SR. He had the highest strike rate of ANY batsmen in the power play overs. He scored 5 50’s of which 3 were in a winning cause and 1 100 which was also in a winning cause. Despite having the worst bowling unit in the entire tournament, he carried them to the second most wins through his batting and intelligent captaincy decisions.

Imad Wasim on the other hand took a grand total of 7 wickets in 11 matches at an average of 32. Before he finally scored some runs in the last couple of matches, he had only managed to score 14 runs in 5 innings. He was carried by Shadab, Agha Salman, Munro, and Naseem. Even today, the star of the show was Haider Ali who scored a rapid 52.

Yet, despite all of this, some posters are trying to convince the world that Imad Wasim is Gary Sobers while Babar Azam is a horrible player. I’m just thankful that in Pakistan, the overwhelming majority of Pakistani cricket fans recognize how lucky we are to have Babar and rightfully have lifted him up to stardom.

Not to mention that Babar never even criticized Imad. It was Imad who went on TV and began criticizing Babar despite him still being an active player. Regardless, Babar still gave Imad credit after today’s innings. Hafeez even called Imad personally and told him to sign a central contract, yet Imad Wasim chose to make himself unavailable for the New Zealand series, retire from international cricket, and continue playing leagues. But now, all of a sudden he wants to take his retirement back?

If placement and silverware is the metric then I’m glad to see that someone who hates Rizwan as much as you do has come to the conclusion that Rizwan is the best captain in the history of PSL.

I wrote this in another thread in my response to @Dr_Bassim.

Babar’s SR of 159 in the PP overs in the league stage was the highest amongst all openers.

It was higher than the explosive, big shot openers like Roy, Hales, Munro, Fakhar and even his own teammate Saim who are frequently referenced as examples of the type of opener Pakistan needs in this format.

But I didn’t see a single post by @Dr_Bassim or by anyone else to acknowledge his phenomenal SR.

This is what a toxic agenda looks like. As far as Imad is concerned, he is a failed cricketer who didn’t have the courage to fight for his place in the team and started crying in the media.
