With the ICC ODI World Cup on the horizon for international cricket teams, the focus shifts to T20 World Cup next year for most of them. Before that, there is also the matter of the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction which will decide squads for the 17th edition of the tournament.

IPL mini-auction, scheduled to take place on 19 December in Dubai, will see franchises iron out their teams for IPL 2024. There is no clarity on when the IPL will take place next year.

Ahead of the mini-auction, the IPL trade window is open which allows franchises to swap players with others or buy players outrightly in all-cash deals.

IPL 2024 Retention Day: From Hardik Pandya To Shardul Thakur, Top Transfers And Rumours

The Indian Premier League 2024 Retention Day has arrived, with all 10 franchises set to release the list of players they wish to retain ahead of the auction. Gujarat Titans' skipper Hardik Pandya is making the biggest headlines ahead of the official announcement, with reports suggesting he is likely to leave the franchise and seal a return to Mumbai Indians. The potential switch has left the entire cricketing fraternity gobsmacked, considering Rohit Sharma is presently the captain of the Mumbai franchise and has shown no indication of leaving anytime soon.

Some top players have already been released by their franchises. The likes of Sarfaraz Khan and Manish Pandey were released by Delhi Capitals, while Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad have traded Shahbaz Ahmed and Mayank Dagar.

Some other moves that have already been sealed include, Romario Shepherd from Mumbai Indians from Lucknow Super Giants, Devdutt Padikkal to Lucknow Super Giants from Rajasthan Royals, Avesh Khan to Rajasthan Royals from Lucknow Super Giants.

Top player retention/release/trade rumours:

Shardul Thakur:
The all-rounder was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 10.75cr but the franchise is reportedly keen to offload the India star ahead of the auction, feeing up much-needed space in their purse.

Prithvi Shaw: There was plenty of noise around the opening batter's future after the tumultuous season he had with Delhi Capitals last season. But, it seems like Shaw will be retained by the franchise.

Hardik Pandya:The Gujarat Titans captains seems to be on the move, and it's only a matter of time before the switch to Mumbai Indians is completed. However, whether Hardik will take up the role at MI as a skipper or a member of Rohit Sharma's army, will be interesting to see.

After making just five appearances across two seasons through injury, Jofra Archer has been released by Mumbai Indians.

Ravi Ashwin said on his YouTube channel about Chennai Super Kings' succession plan for skipper MS Dhoni:

"The holes that CSK will try to fill are ones of captaincy, which I believe Ruturaj Gaikwad is going to take over, as Ambati Rayudu said in his latest interview. Ben Stokes, too, was taken by CSK on the same philosophy of playing an able right hand. Needless to say, he is a quality leader, and CSK is a team that values experience. I think they'll go back to Shardul and get their combination back.

Another thing that they would be thinking about is who is the replacement keeper for MS Dhoni and even about retentions next year. Actually, there were so many rumours in the air that CSK was going to trade this player to see him as a future successor to MS Dhoni. I don't want to call out names, as I am also playing in a franchise. But a team like CSK is filled with thinkers."

That's 300 million USD for 5 years. Just the title sponsorship. kRAzY.

The fact that IPL has not raised the team purse so far is because they want to use it as a level for a longer season. IPL governing body would like the players themselves to make noises about it. Imagine a team purse goes from the current 12.5 million USD to....30 million with a total of 300 million in play for 10 teams.

The money is IPL is insane. No other cricketing country can match it.

Will Work With Government to Make Sure IPL 2024 is Held in India: Arun Dhumal

Indian Premier League chairman Arun Singh Dhumal on Wednesday made it clear that the 2024 edition of the league will kick-start from March end in India and fixtures will be announced after the general elections dates are confirmed.

"We will work with the Indian government, and agencies to make sure that the league takes place in India. We are waiting for the schedule of the general election to be announced and then we will plan accordingly…like which state will host what game at the time of election will be planned that way,” Arun Dhumal told IANS

Asked if any tentative date for the IPL could be shared, he said, “It (IPL) will most likely start from March end… and general elections are in April, so we will work it out with the help of the government.”

As per the information received, with ten teams vying for the coveted trophy, expect a total of 74 matches to be played, potentially spread across two phases due to India’s general elections scheduled during the same period.

Earlier, some reports claimed that there are chances that IPL 2024 will take place outside India due to the Lok Sabha elections.

IPL 2024 Set For March 22 Start, Entire Season To Be Held In India: Chairman Arun Dhumal

The much-anticipated Indian Premier League is set to begin on March 22 and will be held entirely in the country despite the coinciding general elections, league chairman Arun Dhumal told PTI on Tuesday. The elections are expected to be held in April and May and that is the main reason why the schedule for the IPL's 17th edition has not been unveiled yet. Speaking to PTI, Dhumal said to begin with, only the schedule of the first 15 days will be announced and the roster for the remaining games will be decided after the announcement of the general election dates.

The dates of the Lok Sabha polls are expected to be announced early next month.

"We are looking at a March 22 start for the tournament. We are working closely with the government agencies and we will first release the initial schedule. The entire tournament will be held in India," said Dhumal.

Only in 2009, the IPL, in its entirety, was held overseas (South Africa) while the 2014 edition was partially held in the UAE due to the general elections.

However, in 2019, the tournament was held in India despite the elections.

As is the norm, the IPL opener will be played between the last year's finalists, the winners Chennai Super Kings in this case and runners-up Gujarat Titans.

The players' auction for the 2024 season was held in December last year and Australian pacer Mitchell Starc became the most expensive player in the history of the league after being bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 24.75 crore.

IPL 2024: Fixtures for first two weeks unveiled as countdown to T20 World Cup begins

World’s premier cricketers will feature in the Indian Premier League, which is expected to run from 22 March till the end of May, right on the cusp of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and USA.

Defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will face off against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on 22 March at the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai. The final of the tournament is expected to be played in the final days of May, aligning with the commencement of the T20 World Cup on 1 June.

An initial schedule for the 22 March - 7 April period has been released, which sees four double-headers being played. Two of these will take place during the opening weekend.

During the two weeks, 21 matches will be played across 10 cities. The schedule for the remaining matches of the tournament will be released in due course.

Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Titans, and RCB will play five of their 14 matches in this period. While Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will play only three matches; all the other franchises have been slotted to play four games each.

While India’s premier players will feature in the tournament, it is also an important tournament for cricketers from around the world in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup.

After his side’s win in the opening T20I against New Zealand in Wellington, Australia head coach Andrew McDonald had called the competition the best in terms of domestic format, and believed that it could aid in the determination of his side’s composition.

“We've got a lot of our players in IPL as well, so we get another look at what certain players are doing in that competition which is probably the biggest connection to international cricket,” McDonald said. “I think it's the best competition in the world, in terms of domestic format.”

“We're not going to get to a final 11 as we sit here, but we'll work through to a 15 and give ourselves as many options in that 15 to negate what the West Indies surfaces will challenge us with.”

The Sunrisers Hyderabad has officially announced Pat Cummins as their new skipper ahead of the IPL 2024 season.

Cummins, who led Australia to the World Test Championship and ODI World Cup 2023, will be taking over from Aiden Markram at SRH.

The Aussie pacer was sold for 20.5 crore rupees during the IPL 2024 auction, making him the second costliest player in the history of the competition.

The announcement comes a day after IndiaToday.in had revealed that Cummins was all set to replace Markram as the captain of the side in the upcoming season.

Speaking ahead of his SRH debut, Cummins had said that India is like a second home for him.

"India is like a second home. We spend so much time here. IPL you've got your home teams. So you actually feel like you've got plenty of fans Or, you know, at least cricket fans that have, you know, supported you or, you know, lots of people come up to me and say, Oh, I'm from Kolkata or I go for KKR. So it's nice feeling like not everyone's against you," Cummins said on Star Sports.

When will Pat Cummins make his SRH captaincy debut?
Cummins will be back in familiar surroundings as he will be facing his former side Kolkata Knight Riders in his first game as captain at the iconic Eden Gardens.

The match will be part of the first double header of the 2023 season on March 23.

SRH will be hoping that Cummins can get them back into the mix for the playoffs this year after finishing at the bottom of the table last season.

Chennai Super Kings have been dealt a blow ahead of their title defence as Devon Conway is set to be ruled out of action at least until May.

Conway, who was the player of the match in the final last year against Gujarat Titans, will be sidelined at least for eight weeks after it was confirmed that he would be undergoing a surgery this week on his left thumb.

The 32-year-old injured the thumb during the recently held T20I series against Australia and as a result, wasn't available to play the opening Test as well. After medical consultation, the decision was made to operate. With the recovery estimated to be at least eight weeks, Conway in all likelihood will not be available for more than half the tournament which is set to kick off on March 22 and conclude likely by the end of May.

The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to begin on March 22, with defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) facing Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Chennai.

Ahead of the tournament, Ambati Rayudu, who has played both for Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, expressed his views on the upcoming extravaganza.
Talking to News24, Rayudu who was in the CSK team when the MS Dhoni-led outfit defeated Gujarat Titans in the final last year, spoke about Rohit Sharma, who has been replaced by Hardik Pandya as Mumbai Indians captain.

Rayudu reckoned that it will be tough for Pandya to lead Mumbai Indians because the set-up of Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians is quite different. Rayudu added that Pandya should have played for Mumbai Indians for a year and then lead the outfit as Rohit is still the Indian captain.

Rayudu expressed his desire to see Rohit in the CSK outfit.

Rayudu said, "Rohit Sharma can play IPL for the next 5-6 years. if he wants to captain, the whole world is open for him. He can easily captain wherever he wants".

England batter Harry Brook has made the "difficult decision" to withdraw from this year's Indian Premier League following the death of his grandmother.

The Yorkshireman, 25, was set to play for Delhi Capitals after being bought for £380,000 in December.

Brook missed England's recent 4-1 Test series defeat in India after his grandmother first became ill.

It seems like the craze for the IPL is decreasing gradually because many foreign players are withdrawing from it on very basic excuses.

It seems like the craze for the IPL is decreasing gradually because many foreign players are withdrawing from it on very basic excuses.
It usually gets the craze once it starts as its still catered to Indian audiences.

The dullest IPLs are the ones after WC 2011 coming to mind, there is a lot more interest due to players but again its local to Indian audiences esp the ones that don’t watch test cricketz

My fav IPL are definitely first two due to me being in college and having all the time for it. Now I just follow for new Desi players.

I always support CSK but want them to lose, they are setting a weird trend of oldies.

Why are English players pulling out of IPL 2024? Harry Brook joins the list of absentees

The news emerged that England batter Harry Brook, who had missed the Test series against India due to personal reasons, would not be able to play in the IPL either. He had been bought by Delhi Capitals for Rs 4 crore in the latest auction, and the franchise will now be looking for a replacement.

English players who have pulled out of IPL 2024

Mark Wood (Lucknow Super Giants)

The Lucknow Super Giants received a setback ahead of the IPL 2024 season as their star pacer, Mark Wood, will miss the tournament. The England fast-bowler was withdrawn from the upcoming IPL season by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to manage his workload leading up to the T20 World Cup in June and the home summer series.

Wood, who was purchased for Rs. 7.5 crore by the Lucknow franchise during the IPL 2022 auction, will be absent from the tournament due to concerns over his fitness. Despite showing promise with 11 wickets in four games for Lucknow Super Giants in the previous season, Wood's performance was hindered by an elbow injury, causing him to miss several matches.

The 34-year-old cricketer also faced a dip in form during the recent Test series against India, where he managed to secure only four wickets in five innings.

In light of Wood's absence, Lucknow Super Giants have named Shamar Joseph as his replacement for the upcoming IPL season. Joseph, a talented fast bowler from the West Indies, joins the franchise for a sum of Rs. 3 crore.

Gus Atkinson (Kolkata Knight Riders)

In a move aimed at managing the workload of promising seamer Gus Atkinson, the English Cricket Board (ECB) has decided to withdraw him as well from the IPL 2024 tournament. Despite Atkinson's last international outing in December during the West Indies tour, the ECB opted to prioritize his physical well-being.

Atkinson, a 26-year-old talent, made his international cricket debut just last year. Knight Riders had acquired Atkinson for Rs. 1 crore at the auction last year, reflecting his potential as a valuable asset.

Replacing Atkinson at Kolkata Knight Riders is Sri Lankan pacer Dushmantha Chameera, who remained unsold during the auction. Chameera joins the franchise at a reserve price of Rs. 50 lakh, bringing a new dynamic to the team's bowling lineup.

Jason Roy (Kolkata Knight Riders)

Jason Roy, the explosive top-order batter, has withdrawn from the upcoming IPL season citing personal reasons. Roy's decision comes after an impactful stint with the Kolkata Knight Riders last season, where he played eight matches and boasted an impressive strike rate of 151.60, setting a strong foundation for the team.

Notably, Roy has been a journeyman in the IPL, representing four different franchises in as many seasons, including Gujarat Lions, Delhi Capitals, and Sunrisers Hyderabad. This marks the third instance where he has opted out of the tournament due to personal reasons, having done so previously in 2020 and 2022.

Replacing Roy in the Knight Riders squad is Phil Salt, another dynamic English top-order batter known for his aggressive style of play. Salt's recent exploits include scoring back-to-back centuries in a T20I series in the Caribbean last December. Despite going unsold at the auction, Salt now joins KKR for a reserve price of Rs. 1.5 crore, aiming to make a significant impact in the upcoming season.

Harry Brook (Delhi Capitals)

In a heartfelt announcement on his official social media profiles, England cricketer Harry Brook revealed his decision to withdraw from the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The 25-year-old, who had previously cited personal reasons for pulling out of England's recent Test tour in India, disclosed that the passing of his grandmother influenced his choice to opt out of the IPL.

"I can confirm that I have made the very difficult decision not to play in the upcoming IPL," he wrote in a post across his official social media profiles.

"I was so excited to be picked by Delhi Capitals and was so looking forward to joining up with everyone. Whilst I don't think I should need to share my personal reasons behind this decision, I know there will be many asking why. So, I do want to share this.

“I lost my grandmother last month -- she was a rock to me and I spent a huge amount of my childhood in her home; my attitude to life and love for cricket was shaped by her and my late grandfather. I made the decision to leave the India Test tour the night before we flew from Abu Dhabi to India because I was told for the first time that my grandmother was ill and didn't have long left.

"Now that she has passed my family & I are grieving and I need to be around them. Over the last few years I have learned to prioritise my mental wellbeing and that of my family's, honestly nothing is more important to me than family.”

It seems like the craze for the IPL is decreasing gradually because many foreign players are withdrawing from it on very basic excuses.
These English players are not big players; all were bought for below 2 crores in the last round of auction just for backup, so teams won't miss them. After performing bazball against Pakistan, in the 2023 edition, SRH invested a huge amount in Harry Brook, and he failed miserably in the IPL, and they kicked him out.

The big players who skipped the Pakistan tour and preferred the IPL are: :dw

Kane Williamson (GT)
Daryl Mitchell (CSK)
Rachin Ravindra (CSK)
Mitchell Santner (CSK)
Conway (still recovering from a thumb surgery, he is with CSK squad)
Glenn Phillips (SRH)
Trent Boult (RR)
Lockie Ferguson (RCB)
are the other New Zealand players involved in the IPL.

Which of these big-name players are you most looking forward to seeing back in the IPL 2024?

[Reports] Suryakumar Yadav set to miss initial phase of IPL 2024

While recent reports indicated that the cricketer will likely be missing the initial stages of Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2024 campaign, the senior T20 batsman might well have confirmed the theory through his latest Instagram activity.

On March 19, i.e., a couple of days prior to the launch of the much-awaited IPL 2024 season, Suryakumar Yadav shared a cryptic story featuring nothing but a ‘broken heart’ emoji, leaving much to ponder for his fans and followers on Instagram.

Today RCB holding their yearly event RCB Unbox 2024. Several programs are planned for the Unboxing event. Men's team practice session and the felicitation of the women team etc.

This is just an event but look at how the crowd came to cheer their team ,unbelievable. RCB men's team is really letting down their loyal fan base and fooling them every year. :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

RCB have replaced the anglicised 'Bangalore' in their team name with the city's official name Bengaluru. The change was revealed during the franchise's UNBOX event at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Tuesday (March 19).

The team, called Royal Challengers Bangalore since the inception of the tournament in 2008, will now be called Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Insane amount of support, and this is not even a game! The IPL teams sure know how to promote and garner interest.

Just looking at the video, can't help but think international cricket is in more trouble than I actually thought it was.

Biggest interest this year is going to be controversial captaincy change for MI
I don't care as long as they don't sabotage ind team. All potential captians are there and I don't want us to become 90's pak with full of backstabbing captians

Changing the name from Bangalore to Bangaloru will not make any difference. They should win a trophy to stay relevant.

Justin Langer, speaking in an interview with local Indian media, revealed what he has said to the international players ahead of the IPL and WT20 World Cup:

“The message for players, like KL (KL Rahul) or Bishi (Ravi Bishnoi) will be that the more they concentrate on playing well for LSG, their chances (of WT20 call-up) will increase."

”It is a very good observation that we lack some experience in the pace department but there is enormous talent. The pacers all look fit, healthy and hungry”.

“We need to manage them well not just at the start but through the whole tournament. Among pacers Naveen (ul Haq) has played a lot of T20 cricket”.

“I was commentating and I saw him take seven wickets in 37 degrees, 80 per cent humidity and a broken toe. He [Shamar Joseph] is an incredible athlete. Smile, spirit, athleticism and skill, he has got all those ingredients that you need to succeed,”

“There is no face-off. I was disappointed when he left for KKR but he is a real hero in KKR. We have been good friends”.

“I have been sleeping well for the past two years after I left coaching Australia. Now I will have sleepless nights in fitting so much talent in just 11 slots.”

Rinku shared his low pick up shot for six against starc in his insta .It was cool.kolkata fast bowler shakib was bowling good against everyone at death. He bowled well against Russell and got rinku. In youtube Kolkata account, match video is posted.

Who is this fast bowler Shakib?

Legendary pacer Glenn McGrath said in a media interaction at a local Indian event:

"For Starc, he chose not to come to the IPL due to personal reasons. But he comes back and gets a record price. He will be looking forward to it. On his day, if he is moving the ball around, he will be as good as any other fast bowler."

"The money that they [Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc] have received is incredible. But they are both very experienced players and know the game well. They are going to go out and play well as they have done in the past. I don't think it (price tag) will impact them even one percent."

"It all depends on what he (Starc) wants. I retired when I was 33 and Jimmy Anderson is still moving the ball at 41. It's about how much game time he gets and how he and his body are enjoying it."

I think this time Tilak and Kishan will be found out with spin in away matches
Kishan has been found out in past only. Time for him to improve now. Just look at the lineup:-

Rohit
Kishan
SKY
Tilak
Brevis*
Hardik
Shepherd*
David*
Coetzee*
Chawla/ S Gopal
Bumrah
Akash M

Bowling relies on Bumrah and Coetzee while 5 international capped Indian players in top 7 strengthens batting heavily. Brevis might well have his breakthrough IPL year and David is a beast at 7.

Mumbai Indians announce Kwena Maphaka as replacement for Dilshan Madushanka

Mumbai Indians announce Kwena Maphaka as replacement for Dilshan Madushanka, who has been ruled out of IPL 2024 due to an injury. Maphaka has joined the squad and he has the distinction of being one of the youngest player both domestic and overseas to be a part of the IPL and carrying forward the MI legacy of finding new and exciting talent who are developed into high performance cricketers.

South Africa’s 17-year-old Kwena Maphaka shot into the limelight at the U19 World Cup earlier this year where he was awarded the Player of the Tournament for picking 21 wickets. The left armer’s 21 wickets are the most ever by a pace bowler in an edition of the U19 World Cup.

He spearheaded South Africa’s attack as they made the semi-finals in home conditions. The 17-year old has already represented South Africa A and South Africa Emerging teams. He will share the dressing room with two of the best bowlers in world cricket – Lasith Malinga, Bowling Coach and Jasprit Bumrah putting him on a path of learning, development and building on that knowledge.

Maphaka already is capable of generating serious pace and has a very mean bouncer that is known to hurry the batters up. He debuted for the South Africa U19 team at 15 & has already played in two U19 World Cups. He is capable of touching speeds of 140kph and his death bowling and yorkers were a standout too at the U19 World Cup earlier this year.

He still is in his final year of high school. A talented all-round sportsman, Maphaka has also had success in tennis and hockey. He hails from the same school as Kagiso Rabada, St. Stithians.

Mumbai Indians have over the years garnered a reputation of finding gems that go on to be international and IPL stars. Since 2008, Mumbai Indians have had young players signed for the team consistently.

Langer outlines importance of IPL performances for T20 World Cup selection

Australia great Justin Langer highlighted the role of the upcoming Indian Premier League season for players vying for T20 World Cup 2024 spots.

With the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 just around the corner, the Indian Premier League (IPL) will play a huge role for countries determining the final few spots for squads that will travel to the USA and West Indies.

Justin Langer, the coach of the Lucknow Super Giants, rallied his troops ahead of the start of the upcoming season at the virtual press conference, underscoring the importance of a good season in the IPL for a chance at T20 World Cup selection.

Returning to coaching after a hiatus of two years from his role as Head Coach of the Australian Men’s team, Langer set the tone for his squad.

"If we have team success, everyone will be rewarded,” Langer said.

“That'll be the message for all the players, including Bishi (Ravi Bishnoi) and KL (Rahul), and there's a few others who will be vying for T20 World Cup spots. That's all part of the game we play. The more they concentrate on playing well for Lucknow, the more their chances of being selected will increase."

The upcoming season of the IPL also marks the return of Rahul, a key figure in India’s plans for the T20 World Cup.

Despite being sidelined since the first match of the recently concluded Test series against England due to a quadriceps tendon injury, Rahul has now been deemed fit to lead the Lucknow Super Giants.

Langer provided an update on Rahul’s return to the team after a period of absence due to injury.

“Everyone's looking forward to seeing him,” Langer said.

“We know he has worked very hard to tick off all his return-to-play protocols. He's worked very hard. He's been practicing, he's been hitting lots of balls. He's hopefully ready to go. It's going to be nice to have the captain with us."

Langer kept his cards close to his chest when quizzed about Rahul’s position in the playing XI.

The 31-year-old has played the majority of his T20 career – both domestic and international – as an opener but has found success down the order in the other white-ball format, most recently at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 where scored 452 in 11 matches at an average of 75.33 while batting in the middle order.

"I haven't been coaching for two years since I left the Australian cricket team, and for two years I've been sleeping very well at night," Langer said, laughing.

"Now, it's hard to sleep at night because it's very hard to fit so much talent into 11 positions. It's a good problem to have. It's a sweet problem, but we'll work it out. It's nice to have so much talent in our squad.

"My view - and I've said this for probably 25 years - (is that) if the team does well, then everyone gets rewarded. And therefore, from KL's point of view, if he captains the Lucknow Super Giants to an IPL victory, it means he would've played well himself and he would've captained very well, and he would've wicket-kept very well.”

Injury update:

Matheesha Pathirana, the star bowler for Chennai Super Kings during the final overs, won’t be playing at the beginning of IPL 2024 because of a hamstring injury. This 21-year-old bowler from Sri Lanka got hurt during the second T20I against Bangladesh in Sylhet earlier this month, and he couldn’t complete his bowling spell because of it.

So, MS Dhoni wants to sign off from the IPL as a player, not as a captain. Maybe his mindset is that as a captain, he won the trophy in 2023.

Most successful IPL captains:

MS Dhoni - 133 wins.
Rohit Sharma - 87 wins.
Gautam Gambhir - 71 wins.
Virat Kohli - 66 wins.

MS Dhoni, the only one with more than 100 wins

CSK management humiliated Jadeja. First, they removed him from captaincy halfway through the season, and now picked new captain.
