[PICTURES/VIDEOS] KL Rahul - Performance Watch

After being moved around the batting order and finding success yet again, KL Rahul said that working as a floater in India’s limited-overs line-up has helped him learn a lot about his game.

Rahul has struggled to find a settled spot in the line-up. At last year’s World Cup, Rahul began at No.4, before being bumped up to open the innings with Rohit Sharma, after Shikhar Dhawan was struck down with injury.

Rahul forged a successful partnership with Rohit, something he maintained during the home series against Sri Lanka late last year. Dhawan returned for the Sri Lanka series that followed, but with Rohit being rested, Rahul continued to hold down one of the openers’ slots.

That, however, changed in the Australia series, with both Rohit and Dhawan back in the side, as they reprised their time-tested partnership at the top of the order. Rahul was given a run at No.3 in the series-opener in Mumbai, but with India slipping to a massive defeat, Virat Kohli returned at that spot in Rajkot.

Rahul was pushed below even Shreyas Iyer for the second ODI, but it did not faze him, as he came out confidently and stroked his way to a free-flowing 80 off 52 balls that shored up India’s total and set up their series-levelling 36-run win.

It was yet another case of Rahul showing his adaptability – he also kept wicket in Rishabh Pant’s absence – and he said he is up for the challenge, despite his preference for playing at the top of the order.

"I'm kind of enjoying it [batting at different positions]. I'm finding new ways to counter bowlers, new ways to handle situations. I don't look at it as pressure, something that is an opportunity, and I will try to do the best I can.”
KL Rahul

"Look I have always opened the batting. That is the position, order I am most comfortable with, and I know how to build my innings,” Rahul said at the post-match press conference on Friday, 17 January. “But I get to learn so much about my skills, about my batting... batting as an art when I get the chance to bat at 3 or 4 or 5.

"I'm kind of enjoying it [batting at different positions]. I'm finding new ways to counter bowlers, new ways to handle situations. I don't look at it as pressure, something that is an opportunity, and I will try to do the best I can.”

Rahul said that having conversations with Kohli and watching videos of players such as Steve Smith, Kane Williamson and AB de Villiers, who have all had immense success batting in the middle order, helped him finetune his game for the challenge.

"I just spoke a lot more to middle-order batsmen. I watched a lot of videos, I spoke a lot to Virat, watched a lot of videos of AB or Steve Smith, for that matter, on how they build their innings. Kane Williamson, who I have tried to go back and watch some of his videos to see how they build their innings, and how they play in certain situations.

“Only thing I have tried is how to be better in certain situations. And reading of the game has got a lot better, now that I have played in different positions."

Rahul earned much praise for his work behind the stumps, which was overshadowed by his excellence with the bat. But for a part-time ‘keeper, Rahul was excellent on Friday, barely fluffing a chance, and even pulled off a razor sharp stumping à la MS Dhoni to dismiss Aaron Finch.

But the toughest part, he said, was keeping to Jasprit Bumrah. "Jasprit, I always felt when I used to bat against him in the IPL, I felt like the best place to be against Jasprit is behind the stumps,” he said. “But now that I have to keep wickets, it is still hard.

“The way he bowls, swinging the ball both here and at the Wankhede, there is a bit of a wobble. For somebody who isn't a regular keeper, that can be pretty hard, we have seen even for regular keepers, he is a nightmare to keep. But I am enjoying it. Try to read the situation and try to do the best for the team."

Worried that instead of cementing his place as the greatest of his era, he might end up being the AB de Villiers of his age.

KL is an extremely talented all formats player, it's sad though that he hasn't been able to do justice to it.

In ODI cricket, India should continue to open with Rohit and Dhawan. Dhawan hasn't done much wrong to be vacated from the top spot particularly in ODIs and he hasn't failed in a single ICC tournament yet.

It's time for India to keep Agarwal and Shaw as their backup options for openers and let Rahul fill the middle slot. There are a lot of gaps to be filled in the middle order and we don't have legends waiting for their turn in that position.

So, the best India can do now is to share that middle order slot between KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant. Maybe Shubhman Gill also at no.4 if these three fail to fill that gap.

What a knock once again from Rahul. Like i mentioned long long ago, he is a once in a generation level talent. He's unbelievably good!

Iron wrists he has. That flick six down the leg side he hit tonight, you don't do that to a bowler on humanitarian grounds.

He seems to have found that IPL rythm in international cricket as well.

Babar on duck at home ground vs bangladesh bowling Vs
Rahul 56(27) in Nz away tour vs somewhat good attack

Lets just say this thread isnt as useless as some pak posters have mentioned before, things are surely spicing up for this thread.

While i will say this again babar has so far proven himself for his country ,but KL is getting his chances now and who knows what future holds but this thread totally makes sense from here onwards.

if he vats number 5 yes. replacement for rahane in in 3/4 years time.

I am not very confident of Rahul in Tests anymore. I really thought he was the deal when he scored a 100 in Australia on debut series and then followed it up in one of the toughest series we played in India. But in trying to become this LOI player, he has lost some of that technique and assurance.

In 3/4 years time, Rahul will be in his early 30s. Not sure he would be the answer if and when Rahane leaves. Hopefully, one of the young guns form this U19 WC steps by then.

With Mayank and Shaw/Gill coming up, our top 4 spots are sorted for now. I am not confident about Rohit in the opening position when you have Shaw waiting in the benches.

BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly has lauded KL Rahul's work in the limited-overs format and wished the Karnataka batsman will continue the current form even in the longest format of the game. The Indian team management had decided to hand Rahul the dual role of a 'keeper-batsman' in limited overs by dropping Pant from the playing XI in the ongoing T20I series against New Zealand. In the recent times, Rahul has shown satisfactory work with the glove and has been outstanding with the bat as well.

Commenting on Rahul's inclusion after dropping Rishabh Pant, Ganguly said: "Virat Kohli takes that decision. The team management and captain decide the role of KL Rahul."

"He (Rahul) has played well in ODIs and T20Is. He started well in Test cricket but has gone down slightly. But in limited overs cricket he has played really well and hope he continues all the good work but like I said, all these decisions are of the team management's," Ganguly told ABP News.

When asked about the race for the wicket-keeper's spot for this year's T20 World Cup, Ganguly said: "The selectors, Virat and Ravi (Shastri) will decide that. Whatever they think, it'll happen that way."

Earlier, Rahul said that he was enjoying the new role.

"I'm quite honestly loving it. At the international stage, it might seem very new and it might seem like I've never kept. (But) I've kept for my IPL franchise for the last 3-4 years, and I've kept for my first-class team as and when there is an opening. I've still stayed in touch with wicket keeping," Rahul said after the first T20I against New Zealand.

He is finally coming to own and regaining his confidence. This could be terrible news for other teams.

If Kohli and Rohit were not bad enough, imagine having a third clone.

Another half century for Rahul.

Greatest batsman of this era

Hope him and pandya drink less coffee on shows and perform more which is where their performances matter. Being IPL stars and bringing nothing impactful to the team is a shame with all the exposure and chances these two got.I suspect his wicket keeping improved his concentration skills. Whatever it is all a win-win for him and the team.

Was always good in T20s

Real challenge is being consistent in ODIs and gaining back Test spot

He has developed unbelievable gears and is on his way to becoming a T20 legend and probably an.excellent ODI batsman as well.

However I honestly believe these whippy twirls and ramps that he has added to his game have come at the cost of his Test opening technique.

You don't have to be sanskari to do better in sports. What Pandya and Rahul done is nothing compared what NBA and NFL players do. You can perform well on field and still enjoy your time outside it.

Don’t forget shreyas and shaw . Both are mumbai and both are legends in the making .

Couldn't agree more.

KL Rahul is India's version of AB de Villiers in the middle order.

I think number 5 is right position for KL Rahul now. He doesn’t have to deal with moving ball and has all the shots in the book to take bowlers to cleaners.

May be it is your view. Never saw Tendulkar or Dravid or even Ganguly uttering expletives on such repetitive basis or showing off. Millions of young kids wanting to excel in cricket look upto international stars. That is the one of the reasons many like those three - never crossed limits in off field.

What a guy!

What a talent!

Not in a 40-50 years docyou get tonsee a talent of this level and we sre happy to have witnessed two during this time -. Tendulkar and Rahul.

Memories of Sharjah coming in mind today seeing Rahul.

I never saw Hardik or Rahul cursing out on field. Regarding Kohli, he is a typical Delhite and you can see such behavior among most players coming from Delhi. Again, each player has their own personality and not every one can be like Tendulkar or Dravid.

Anyone who have doubts about KL Rahul should have seen the video analysis by NZ commies. Ball pitched at the exact same spot 3 times. He smashed in 3 different directions each time. Paid handsome complements as a 360 degree player.

Jhadav is smacking as well, so Rahul’s knock doesn’t seem spl.

He made some blunders in the last over or else he could have got his century.

The reverse sweep for 6....who the hell is this guy :))

Honestly I didn't expect Rahul to succeed today.

Playing at number 5....what the hell man.

This guy is bali ka bakra to be used by the team as they please.

It's not like his position is secure that team is asking him to play at a spot as a favour (eg - Tendulkar at number 4 in ODIs).

Still he did well...which only reinforces a belief I have about him. I talked about it after the 3rd ODI vs Aus.

Rahul has a certain rhythm to his game.

When it's off, he will play scratchy and fail. Regardless of his position, pitch, bowling, etc.

When it's on, he will succeed.

With confidence and assurance of spot, KL should get better and better.

Still needs to open imho but considering the team context (dunno if Shaw or Mayank can bat at number 5), have to accept this will be Rahul's spot.

Dunno what the future holds.

Someone has to bat in the middle order.

Good to see people finally seeing the light and acknowledging what I had been shouting from rooftop for so long. Todays innings was just the trailer, he is capable of much much more grander things. His best is yet to come. One of the most dynamic stroke makers in the world and definitely most aesthetically pleasing.

He got somewhat outfoxed in the last few balls, otherwise there was a century for the taking. He seems still recovering from the rough patch and a bit cautious in his approach. I wanna see a fully confident Rahul going all Anton Chigurh on bowlers which hasn't quite happened since his comeback despite his awesome current form.

The problem was he was directly competing with Rohit Sharma (another guy who went through a similar phase as Rahul in the beginning of his career! Inconsistent, dropped, not sure of his role, batting in middle-order, then promoted to No.1...) But Rohit Sharma in ODIs is a monster and it is not easy to replace him! Also Rohit is Shastri's & Kohli's favorite (in addition to the fact that even Rahul's fans would agree that Rohit is much bigger than Rahul at this point!)

He could have competed with Dhawan though, but even that was tough with Dhawan being a left-hander too (works in favor of Shastri who always talks about left/right hand combination!) So he could come as opener only if Dhawan goes seriously out of form or injured (which is happening right now, but the management is not risking him as opener again and utilizing him in middle order and as wicket-keeper which is right at this point to build his confidence! But good that he is opening in T20s...)

His initial spot (Test Opener), his modification in batting approach (due to demands of T20 and Modern batting) gave whole lot of confusion to both himself and team management! So nothing was clear about what was his role in the team (more than that it became difficult to hold his place in the side due to the inconsistency!). I still believe that he is an all format (all 3 formats) opener for India (an upgrade over Gambhir), that is when we will start to see his best and that he will develop a right temperament & technique to manage all those 3... If he keeps wicket for ODI & T20s no issues - if that gives confidence to both him & management (should move to slips in Tests, because even slips are important in tests. Pant should continue in Tests & utilize IPL & domestics to improve as a player!)

Incredible innings tonight.Unbelievable strokemaking, ominous signs for other teams.Especially for the coming 2 t20 world cups.He is poised to massacre several teams.

He should've been at his peak by now. Because of team management's ****** handling, they've wasted two years of his career.

K.L. Rahul enters record books in wicketkeeping gloves

3 - The number of players from a Test-playing nation who managed to register a 50-plus score while keeping wickets for the first time in a Twenty20 International match. K. L. Rahul’s 56 in India’s first T20I against New Zealand at Auckland is the now the highest by a batsman from a major cricketing side who was keeping wickets for the first time.

Highest T20I scores by a player keeping wickets for the first time

India keeps on producing quality batsmen. He is impressive and deserves the success. :14:

People shouldn't compare him to Babar. Rahul is more impactful and destructive.

Watched the highlights. He hit a reverse sweep for six. Incredible

He is Brian Lara's favorite modern day cricketer. Lara just said he wish he had Rahul's class.

Huge statement from a legend of the game.

Rahul is without question the most gifted batsman since Tendulkar.

He is one of the 5 greatest batting talents that ever existed, arguably

Another overrated cricketer, what is his average in South Africa? A laughable 7. Averages a pathetic 25 in test cricket away excluding Windies.

Does he have a test career written in him or will always be LO bully?

I think his Test career may be finished. Already there are 3 excellent players - Agarwal, Shaw and Gill lining up for opener slot. Not to mention Rohit who probably will stick out 1-2 yrs more

Indian test middle order (Rahane-Pujara) will be changed out slowly in next 2-3 yrs but again guys like Iyer and next gen batsmen will likely be in queue for it and rated ahead of

Rahul may have a redemption shot at a late career 15-20 test run like Rohit is now having to end up with a respectable 40 avg, but suffice to say he is no longer in the running for an India great test career.

61* of 42 balls for Rahul - looking set for a hundred

absolutely not. Rahul will slide into number 5 in tests. Dude will replace ajinkye. Too good of a player.

puji needs to be replaced by gill.

then we have Shaw, jaiswal as well.

When do you think Pujara should be replaced. Straight away?

Rahul 132* in 69 balls - innings of the tournament so far.

Sensible Indian Fan, where are you my brother :))

Time for us die hard Rahul believers to rejoice.

This guy is DEVASTATING at his best

No he should prove at Ranji then only he will come back to test cricket.

Dare I say it, better than Rohit at depositing bowlers beyond the boundary once he gets in.

No he should prove at Ranji then only he will come back to test cricket.

LMAO, He's proved everything at Ranji he ever needed to. Everyone who knows the game knows it but you are free to edgelord lmao.

Look at his test numbers for last 2 years it clearly shows you are not watching test cricket.

He is our version of ABD. When he gets going, the shots he plays and how quick he scores, its phenomenal. Can also keep wickets for an anology.

The power in his orthodox shots is something I have not seen in a batsman since Sachin.

Kings XI Punjab captain KL Rahul on Thursday became the fastest Indian batsman to reach 2000 IPL runs. Rahul achieved the feat in IPL 2020 match No.6 against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Dubai.

Rahul, in the process, overtook Sachin Tendulkar, who till today held the record for being the fastest to 2000 IPL runs. Tendulkar, who played all six seasons of IPL for Mumbai Indians, had reached the milestone in 63 innings. Rahul did it in 60 innings.

Gautam Gambhir is the 3rd on the list, who had scored 2000 runs in 68 innings followed by Suresh Raina (69) and Virender Sehwag (70).

Rahul also became the 32nd player to 2000 IPL runs. He is 20th Indian batsman to reach this landmark.

Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and opted to field in their Indian Premier League match against Kings XI Punjab in Dubai on Thursday.

For KXIP, Jimmy Neesham and Murugan Ashwin came in place of Chris Jordan and Krishnappa Gowtham, while RCB fielded the same XI that played in their tournament opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

He finished on a score of 132, which is the highest in the IPL by an Indian and also the highest by a captain in the IPL.

Orange and purple caps both belong to Punjab right now.

Well done boys.

Make Punjab great again. :kapil

He's got too much talent, it glorious to watch. But I wait for when he does that in Test cricket, and also gets past the 50 average in ODis.

Sorry bud..been too tied up with work these days.

That knock was pretty cool to watch.

I kid you not...that day, I was thinking it was a good knock but it could have been better (considering his standards) and saw KL telling Maxi that he wasn't hitting the ball well.

Haha.

Dunno what happened to him after that game.

All his runs after that game have been useless.

The thing that made KL special in IPL was his impact.

He may not be in his perfect zone this IPL but it's clear he is holding back.

He could have easily smashed 25-30 more runs for the same number of balls today.

Not sure whether he is worried about the middle order or getting self conscious about performing (and in the process getting selfish).
