Of course the overall batting was pathetic and I'm not letting any of them off the hook... but this thread is about Shan's captaincy and I firmly believe that a good thinking captain would have taken us over the line
 
It's common practice now in poor teams that the captain is merely there to toss the coin or is a pet favourite of team.

Apart from going out for the toss or speaking English, Shan offers nothing to the team.

Maybe he can start doing fist pumps, wave at crowd and do team huddles after every wicket falls.

This seems to be the requirement for mediocre captains in different sports

His batting looks ok until he loses concentration and plays above his station.
 
to be fair we were a bowler short, PSL products like Naseem won't last in longer formats. you need bowlers with discipline in tests.

He's just a mediocre player. Always has been and always will. It's only because his dad's well connected in PCB that he's even in the team

Statistically yes and ultimately that's what matters. But when i watch him bat, he doesn't seem to lack talent or shots. I think he plays as if he is amazingly talented,and he isn't. That's what I mean by playing above his station.

Yeah like most of our openers he looks good for about an hour, gets a nice 20 and then throws it away. There is just no mental toughness in Shan as well as others

He should have either bowled alot earlier or not bowl at all.Why would you give someone who hasnt bowled a single over in the second Innings have 20 runs to defend this is pathetic captaincy.
 
He has to go and I don't mean as a captain I mean as a player he averages under 30 after playing almost 40 test matches that has to be some sort of record for a top order batsmen!

He shouldn't even be included in the team let alone captain Misbah was hounded as a captain but at least he maintained his average in the mid 40s.

Shan Masood is the worst batsmen ever to have played 40 test matches for Pakistan

First and foremost he's a rubbish player plain and simple. A 29 avg opening/top order test batter as a captain is a joke. Plain and simple. Performance wise he's a liability so what's the point?

Now as a captain he's been rubbish. He showed good captaincy antics vs Australia probably to impress selectors but straight after the aussie series he was rubbish.

Can't control his bowlers, doesn't know how to properly place field sets, wastes drs reviews left and right, doesn't contribute as a batsmen etc etc.
 
Each and every player above him is either a bowler or wicket keeper

He is statistically Pakistan's worst ever batsmen to have played more than 70 innings!

There is absolutely no defending him anymore I remember his backers saying he was a great captain and his batting comes second.

First and foremost you should contribute to your team in your specialist field ie as a batsman or bowler then your captaincy comes second.

And he doesn't perform either as a captain or batsmen.

He has go to go!

His backers were clueless even back then. And I was the first one who pointed it out and was called a moron by some.

I still have comments where I outright claimed that having a degree from the UK in business doesn't qualify you to be a good captain. These 2 qualifications aren't interlinked.

Followed by the fact that he averaged 28 at the time. He only boosted his avg to 29 due to that 150 on a road pitch. However on that very pitch root struck 262 and Brooks scored a triple century. That 150 was very standard as it was 700 to 800 run track.

People constantly bringing up Breadley lol. This is 2024 not the 1970's anymore. Mikey wouldn't even make it into the playing 11 of a Canadian franchise league.
 
Of all the test batsmen who have scored 2000+ test runs at top 4 positions, Shan's average is the 5 lowest.
Interestingly Zack Crawley is also in the list.

The bottom line is he is a from the noble elite in PK and just happens to have a family member in the PCB.

At least on his good days Crawley gets England up and going and they stay ahead of the rate, he is being questioned in the media rn in the UK but he suits Bazball and the management are keen on him.

What does Shan Masood do just stay there and play his famous 60 ball 25's then nicks off😂

I get that he’s been mediocre in international cricket. But he has 36 centuries in domestic cricket, 12k runs at an average of 40, and 6k runs in List A at an average of 53. Those are phenomenal numbers…hard numbers to ignore anywhere in the world.

Should he be in the team based on his international performances? No.
Did he get opportunities because of his uncle? Maybe, but with stats like those, he didn’t need to.

His father Mansoor Khan became a member of the PCB in 2014!

He straight away got the golden ticket, as soon as your father is on the board of your nations cricket team. I mean you know what happens next😂

You can throw all the domestic stats in the world at me! Now show me his international stats😂

If you can see the previous posts and have a mind capable of reason you will clearly be able to see that he is one of the worst top order batsmen not only in Pakistan's history but international cricket history.

Let's just take a dive into his amazing, immense FC Career - He averages 39😂

The majority of the Indian batsmen average in the 40's and 50's.

But a man who averages 39 in FC Cricket and has played the majority of that in Pakistan which you need no explaining is amongst the worst FC competitions in the world, is the captain of the country.

Shan Masood’s international numbers are poor, and he shouldn’t be in the team. Whether his uncle had an influence, I can't say for sure, but his domestic numbers are outstanding, and I doubt all those bowlers were his cousins and uncles.

I don’t think you understand how to interpret stats. Based on those stats, he’s one of the strongest contenders. An FC opener averaging 40 with 15 centuries and 12k runs is gold anywhere in the world. You’re probably comparing his stats to those of middle-order batters.

Regarding the domestic standard, it’s decent, and it’s all we have to base our selections on. We can’t base Pakistani selections on anything else (or so and so’s opinion). If a player can’t dominate the domestic system, they have no hope at the international level. Most of those who have done well in domestic whether you talk about Agha Salman, Kamran Ghulam, Saim Ayub, Saud Shakeel, sajid Khan or Mohammad Abbas have shown the same mettle in international cricket. Shan Masood’s is one of those who couldn’t/didnt and that’s Ok not everyone will but most will.

His place in the top order has become unteneable. Either he moves down the order and proves himself or give someone else a chance.
 
Where are all of those people who were praising his captaincy after the Australian series?

The fact is that Shan Masood is an awful cricketer. He is an awful batsman and awful captain. His captaincy was special kind of bad during this match. Shahzad didnt bowl a single over as SA were getting close to the target. He even brought on Jamal but not Shahzad. Because of Shan’s horrendous captaincy, we lost a rare opportunity to win a test match in a SENA country.

Babar was a horrendous captain but at least he was justifying his place in the team. Shan doesn’t even merit a place in the team. He should be sacked before the second test match.
 
I hope this joke of a batsman and captain is booted out, clearly he is wasting a place in team an average of mid 20s for a player in top 3 is utter disgrace, would rather play a bits and pieces player instead of him as he will cover all bases. Someone like Jahandad Khan
 
He is in the playing 11 because he is a captain otherwise he doesnt even deserve to be in a club level side

Has any Pakistani captain had such a lack of bowling resources at their disposal? If Shan can pull a miracle here it will be an all time great performance. If we lose can we really blame him?
 
Shan has no clue so far in the 2nd test against Proteas.. He is looking nervous as the bowlers are getting treatment.
 
Shan Masood's International stats are not much to write home about. His captaincy also seems to be confusing, and I don't understand why he didn't bowl Shahzad in the 1st test against South Africa.

I don't know what his father does!

But Shan Masood's record in county cricket is outstanding and the county bowlers were not paid by his daddy to feed him deliveries in his favourite areas so the lad can bat.

It is unfortunate that he hasn't translated his county form and know-how to International cricket and it is a loss for Pakistan but I can see why selectors persisted with him and gave him chances.

I have seen him bat for Yorkshire and he knows how to bat...
 
A lot was expected of him but he has turned out to be another defensive, listless and unimaginative captain.
Bowling changes are poor, game sense is even worse. Keeps giving away easy singles even when batsmen are new at the crease.

If he fails to produce a positive result here then it should be his last test, not just as a captain but as a player as well.

Shan Masood is looking clueless on Day 1 of the 2nd Test against South Africa because Cape Town's pitch is offering nothing for the pacers

I agree with this, The bowlers are total rubbish.

However he himself hasn't kept up his form. Shan gets hate due to his batting + nepotism tag and understandably so. He isn't a very good fielding captain either.

But sympathy wise he's gotten the worst deck of pacers + spinners.
 
"Ultimately captains are only as good as their bowlers" -- not me saying this, but Richie Benaud, who probably forgot more about cricket than most of us on here have ever known.
The "great" captains all had access to super bowling attacks

Brearley had Botham and Willis at their peak
Lloyd (a limited and tactically average captain) had Holding, Roberts, Graner et al
Waugh had McGrath and Warne.

Shan is probably pretty average, but with this attack, on a flat wicket, a combination of Brearley and Waugh would struggle
.
 
This maybe a flat wicket but he wanted to bowl first here without the extra spinner.
Solely responsible for losing the previous test due to his terrible captaincy against the tail.
Dude is too soft spoken and lacks fight.
 
His captaincy and position in the team should be untenable after this series.

Irrelevant but Noman Ali the spinner averages 20 with bat & 27 with bowl.

I would have kept him in under gillespie tenure as an interim. I think he can be receptive to new thinking and approach - obviously his performance isn't the best.

Under new system with Aqib the useless it is pointless.
 
He has no backup left now, but I still think PCB should support him and let him continue as captain. There has already been enough chaos in PCB due to instability.

Much will depend on whether he scores. We know he wasn't selected on merit so it matters not whether he wins or losses.

He needs to calm down and stop focusing on strike rate in Test cricket. He needs to play with caution and adopt a more tailored approach. I don’t know about his meritbut I can see that he has brought discipline to our Test side.

Let's not pretend he is the team on merit. Many better players have had fewer tests. He doesn't have the talent to dominate good attacks

Who else do we have at the moment to lead the side long term? Captaincy isn’t always about individual performance. It’s about how well he lead and inspire his team on the field.

I don't know but I can't see Saud doing any worse. After seeing Shaans team selection and tactics today, how much worse can Saud be and he is also much better player

No way man. He should be kept away from captaincy. You can’t ruin someone’s career by making them captain. Let him develop as a player only.
 
Seen him captaining. I still find him not as bad as Rohit sharma. Atleast he tries some funky things instead of having a defensive field set for tailenders

His legacy as a player will be a player who played way too many matches at under 30 average.

As a captain his legacy will be getting whitewashed by Bangladesh at home.
 
A good captain needs a good bowling attack and a decent batting line up. Shan has neither & to add to that he himself is a below international standard cricketer. There's literally nothing going in his favor and then he has to shoulder the burden of captaincy.

So whatever planning that is done, everything crumbles when your toothless fast bowler starts the day by bowling a leg stump half volley.

Not really it’s starts to speed up later in Cape Town and show cracks. Batting gets harder and harder. (Apparently not for South Africa though )
