[PICTURES/VIDEOS] Sri Lanka tour of Bangladesh (2024)

The partnership is now worth 109 runs off 104 balls. Sri Lanka is Bazballing atm. SL 167/5

If mendis and silva can hang on till the days ends, I think they can reach 330+

Brilliant partnership between Silva and mendis. Probably match-saving one. SL is 217/5 at tea break.

11th Test hundred for Dhananjaya and maiden Test hundred for Kamindu Mendis but both batters failed to turn it into a massive one.

SL - 270/8 (60.5 overs).

I think BD are slightly ahead. Sylhet as a venue tends to be good for batting.

Sri lanka lost the plot. after mendis and silva fell, the whole team came crashing down. Would have scored 350+ easily if one of them stayed out there.

SL - 280-all out (68 overs).

The score doesn't seem enough at this venue. Let's see how BD bat.

21/5 from 259/5 - expected from these 2 highly motivated teams . Russell say little passage of play left which all opening batters hate - btw 20 overs remain , wonder what he smokes !

Fantastic centuries from the lower-middle order of Sri Lanka, Dhananjaya de Silva 102(131) and Kamindu Mendis 102(127). After a long time, I saw centuries from both batters in the lower middle order.

Bangladesh has produced a lot of talent who can clock 140 + in the last decade but they just haven't been able to step up for various reasons.

Nahid has potential but too raw.

actually nice to see a surface with grass in BD .... 22/2 in 7

They need good , flat pitches with bounce to develop better cricketers.

It's probably tough though considering that their pitches are , in all likelihood, similar to pitches in eastern India - Ranchi, Kolkata etc. where the bounce is low .

SL 1st innings: 280-all out.
BD 1st innings: 32/3 (10 overs).

Stumps for Day 1.

I think honors are even after Day 1. Pitch seems spicy.

What a roller-coaster day of cricket.

1st Test Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka,Day 1- Stumps

Bangladesh trail by 248 runs with 7 wickets remaining

A day that started well by Bangladesh but in the end, it's the visitors who will have a good sleep. Bangladesh opted to bowl first and were right on the money, taking five wickets in no time. Khaled Ahmed was the man of the hour and it looked like they were rattle the visitors quickly here but then came the stubborn partnership which turned things around and got Sri Lanka back on track. Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis joined hands to add more than 200. Mendis was dropped in the slips on the first ball and went onto make a hundred while the skipper under a lot pressure played a brilliant innings as well.

Hindustan Times

Kamindu Mendis pleased with maiden Test ton in testing conditions

Kamindu Mendis made a maiden Test century in Sylhet to lift Sri Lanka from a tricky position on day one of the first Test against Bangladesh.

Kamindu Mendis walked in to bat with the team struggling at 57/5 on a spicy wicket in Sylhet after being put in to bat.

Alongside skipper Dhananjaya de Silva, Mendis strung together a double-century partnership to take Sri Lanka to a good position on day one.

Mendis departed after his maiden Test hundred and de Silva followed suit soon after as Sri Lanka lost their last five wickets for 21 runs.

Speaking on his first Test ton that came under pressure, Mendis said, "At that time, the goal for us was just to get settled at the crease, and once we did that, to set about playing a long innings.

"And after that our partnership got settled and we were able to carry on.

"Being five down for 50-odd is something that can happen in Test cricket sometimes. Their fast bowlers bowled really well, in good areas. The wicket also supported the seamers, as well as the overcast conditions."

Mendis, who was dropped off the first ball he faced, capitalised on the opportunity to counter the Bangladesh bowlers with some aggressive cricket. His 102 came at a strike-rate of 80.31 as the quick-fire partnership pulled Sri Lanka back into the game.

"I thought that the boundary on one side was short," Mendis explained.

"I thought if I can hit the short ball, it will be good for us. Their fast bowlers bowled well, but they also bowled some bad balls. Dhananjaya and I stayed positive."

Mendis is just playing his second Test match and has grabbed the opportunity with both hands to make a place in the Test starting XI.

"I know it's very difficult to get an opportunity [in the Test side] because our Test team is very settled. In the last couple of years I worked tirelessly to get to this point."

ICC

Pitch report: "The grass, it's burnt off really. Some areas a dry and bare, some have a covering of green," says Russell Arnold. "That would mean when the ball hits the different areas it has to act differently. More of a concern are the cracks, hitting the edges of them again there can be variable bounce, it can crumble. The spinners will come into it. It's gonna get harder and harder to bat. Yesterday Sri Lanka did all the hard work, today it's going to be Bangladesh's turn. Take a leaf from how Dhananjaya and Kamindu played, you gotta attack the ball."
Then the other guy says going to be good for batting for next 2 days :)
69/4 nightwatchman batting nicely .

BD - 69/4 (18 overs).

Need to bat positively. They can't afford to go into a shell.

Nightwatchman Taijul got out for 47. He did his job.

BD - 147/7 (43 overs).

Trailing by 133 runs.

3 sixes in 1 over. Tail-enders are having fun.

BD - 179/8 (47 overs).

Trailing by 101 runs.

This 9th wicket partnership is worth 39 runs from 33 balls. Valuable runs.

BD - 186/8 (49 overs).

Trailing by 94 runs.

SL 1st innings: 280-all out.
BD 1st innings: 188-all out.

SL are leading by 92 runs.

Innings break.

92 run lead & 46 overs remain for the day . Should be fun if SL get bowled out for 150-160 .

At tea break, thing looks quite okay for Sri Lanka. Must play sensibly here to set up a huge target or else it could get bad for the.

End of yet another day dominated by the bowlers.

Bangladesh v Sri Lanka, 1st Test Day-2, Stumps

Sri Lanka lead by 211 runs

Bangladesh whoever came out fighting with the ball. Rana bowled with fire and bagged early wickets for the hosts. Dimuth though showed good fight and he was well supported by Mathews and Dhananjaya de Silva who is off to a start. Lanka will hope they can somehow cross the 300 run mark and that will take some chasing. Bangladesh on the other hand, will hope they can take a few more wickets quickly and keep Lanka in tact.

TOI

Bangladesh should just give up on Test cricket.

Just 2 Test series wins in their history against major sides.

You need to at least win at home.

Just focus on white ball cricket.

SL are effectively at 211/5.

BD need to wrap things up quickly and ensure the target is not beyond 250.

SL are ahead (as of now).

Lead is 250 now. Looks like it's going to be a pretty difficult chase for BD. If SL adds another 100 runs it's over for them .

What a game this has been so far for Dhananjaye. batting at 75 atm and the lead has crossed 300 mark now. Bangladesh will find it difficult to win it from here.

Kamindu Mendis looks like a decent find for SL. Both Pak and Ind hv whitewashed BD in test series in their backyard recently. BD need to play exceptionally well from here on to avoid another series whitewash at home to an asian team (SL this time)

DHananjaye and Mendis are the match winners so far. Sri Lanka would have been in trouble if these 2 also failed like others. Yet another 100-run partnership between these 2 batters. The lead extended to 319 runs and still 4 wickets and a lot of time are left in the game.

sick of seeing these 2 .... 349/6 . DDS should get his 100 & declare & get 2 extra days to relax .

any good night life in Sylhet ? Wonder what the SL guys will do in spare time .... 356/5 & 55 overs left for the day

The kind of pitch report Arnold does it appeared as if scoring 250 is impossible ... partnership for 7th now 140 !

Mehidy Hasan Miraz to Dhananjaya, no run, was there an edge? The replay shows that there was certainly an edge. Oh my word! Why did Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz didn't appeal? The keeper should surely know if there's a deflection. Was a back of a length ball around off, Dhananjaya made a bit of room as he tried to run it down to third man but edged it straight to Litton Das. That's a big blunder
