Rare team batting record for Sri Lanka in Chattogram

Sri Lanka put on 531 on board in Chattogram in the second Test against Bangladesh without a single centurion in the innings

Sri Lanka's batters put together a rare team record against Bangladesh in the second Test in Chattogram. This series is a part of the ICC World Test Championship.

In the first innings, Sri Lanka scored 531, yet none of their batters made a century. This made it the highest-ever total in a Test innings without a hundred.

Six of Sri Lanka's top seven batters made half-centuries with none going on to convert them to triple figures. The highest score in the innings was Kusal Mendis' 93 while Kamindu Mendis was second-best at 92 not out. He remained stranded eight short of a third Test century in a row as the visitors were bowled out.

Sri Lanka's innings broke the previous highest score set by India against New Zealand (524/9 declared) in Kanpur in 1976. On that occasion too, six Indian batters had scored half-centuries in the innings.

Sri Lanka's formidable total in the first innings helps them become strong favourites to complete a series victory after their dominant win in the first Test.

BAN vs SL, 2nd Test Day 2: Sri Lanka dominate Bangladesh but Mendis misses rare feat

Bangladesh reached 55-1 at stumps, trailing Sri Lanka by 476 runs.

Opener Zakir Hasan was unbeaten on 28 alongside nightwatchman Taijul Islam after Lahiru Kumara bowled Mahmudul Hasan Joy for 21.

Sri Lanka dominated the day.

Mendis was 92 not out when last man Asitha Fernando was run out for a duck, eight runs short of what would have made him only the fourth Sri Lankan to score three centuries in consecutive innings.

The right-hander, who scored 102 and 164 in the first Test, struck Taijul for two sixes in an over to come close to the feat.

However, Fernando fell short of his crease in a desperate attempt to change the strike.

Apart from Mendis, who was playing only his third Test, five other Sri Lanka batsmen passed the half-century mark: Dhananjaya de Silva (70), Dinesh Chandimal (59), Kusal Mendis (93), Dimuth Karunaratne (86) and Nishan Madhushka (57).

Shakib Al Hasan finished with 3-110 as Sri Lanka made Bangladesh toil for nearly two days after electing to bat first. Sri Lanka began the second day on 314-4.

De Silva, who scored 102 and 108 in the first Test, also raised the prospect of scoring three centuries on the trot before he was dismissed in the post-lunch session.

Chandimal was the only batsman to be dismissed in the first session, edging Shakib behind the stumps after making 59 runs.

Khaled Ahmed then trapped de Silva leg before in the first over after the lunch break.

The right-arm medium-pacer could have taken another wicket in his next over if Prabath Jayasuriya was not comically dropped by three slip fielders on six.

Mendis was declared caught behind on 35 off Mehidy Hasan Miraz but the decision was reversed after review.

Shakib hit Jayasuriya plumb in front to end his 65-run seventh wicket stand with Mendis, who was dropped by Hasan Mahmud on 60 at deep square leg.

Sri Lanka, who has never lost a Test series to Bangladesh, won the first Test in Sylhet by 328 runs.

BAN vs SL, 2nd Test Day 3: After gaining a huge lead in the first innings, Sri Lanka reached 102-6 at stumps to extend its overall advantage to 455 runs

Sri Lanka bolstered its chance to sweep the two-match series against Bangladesh despite suffering a batting collapse on Day 3 of the final test on Monday.

After gaining a huge lead in the first innings, Sri Lanka reached 102-6 at stumps to extend its overall advantage to 455 runs.

The touring team bowled out Bangladesh earlier for a paltry total of 178 but chose not to enforce the follow-on. Fast bowler Asitha Fernando claimed 4-34 as Bangladesh was dismissed for fewer than 200 for the third time in a row.

His fellow opener Vishwa Fernando picked up 2-38, including the wicket of Zakir Hasan, who top-scored with 54 after Bangladesh had resumed on 55-1.

It was a big blow for the home side when skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, on 1, clipped a ball straight to short mid-wicket off left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya (2-65).

Vishwa then dismissed nightwatchman Taijul Islam for 22.

Sri Lanka’s bowlers kept up a tight length and received another reward when Asitha claimed two wickets in an over. Playing his first test for a year, the dangerous Shakib Al Hasan was trapped lbw for 15 by a sharp inswinger.

Liton Das hit Asitha for a boundary off his second ball but the bowler exacted his revenge with a short of a length delivery that took the outside edge.

Shahadat Hossain was then caught by Kamindu Mendis off fast bowler Lahiru Kumara (2-19) for 8.

Mehidy Hasan was trapped lbw by Jayasuriya for 7 before Asitha wrapped up the Bangladesh innings by removing Mominul Haque (33) and Syed Khaled Ahmed for 1.

There was another clatter of wickets when Sri Lanka batted again, with Bangladesh fast bowlers Hasan Mahmud (4-51) and Khaled Ahmed (2-29) doing the damage.

Bangladesh has done well on day 4 so far. They are 31/0 chasing a mammoth total of 511. Still needing 480 more to win.
No long before the wickets start falling and Bangladesh loses this game.

Bangladesh still needs 330 more to win this game and there is plenty of time left as well but losing 4 wickets is something that is putting them away from this game. 180/4.

Sri Lanka sweep Bangladesh Test series with crushing win

Lahiru Kumara finished with 4-50 to help Sri Lanka thump Bangladesh by 192 runs in the second Test and sweep the two-match series 2-0 on Wednesday.

The fast bowler dismissed last man Khaled Ahmed to wrap up a one-sided contest before lunch on the fifth day in Chittagong.

Hosts Bangladesh, chasing a mammoth 511 in their second innings, added just 50 after resuming on 268-7.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz staged a lone fight to stay unbeaten on 81 after completing his sixth Test half-century.

With a Sri Lankan triumph all but inevitable when the day began, Mehidy played some positive strokes to bring up his fifty off 68 balls.

He lost overnight partner Taijul Islam for 14 when the batsman drove off-spinner Kamindu Mendis to Nishan Madushka at gully.

Kamindu finished with 3-32 to go with his unbeaten 92 with the bat in the first innings, earning him the man of the match award.

He was also named player of the series after scoring a hundred in both innings of the first Test.

"The bowlers did their basics on this wicket and the batters did their job as well," Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva said.

"The batters were a bit disappointed about not getting runs in the first Test, but we have experienced players. I was confident they would get runs," he added.

"There wasn't a lot of spin on offer. So I thought about reverse swing as a way to get wickets. The pacers were really on the spot."

Sri Lankan pacers accounted for 33 of the 40 Bangladesh wickets to fall, a rare feat on Bangladesh's generally spin-friendly pitches.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto said the home side's poor showing for the red-ball series would provoke some soul-searching.

"If you look at our batting, everyone got set but didn't get a big score. That's something to think about," he said.

"If you get set, you have to make a score. We have to play more first-class cricket."

Sri Lanka won the first Test in Sylhet by 328 runs.

They also triumphed in the three-match T20 series 2-1 but lost the one-day international series by the same margin.

Bangladesh will host Zimbabwe for five T20s in May in their next international engagement, ahead of the T20 World Cup starting in June.

Thought BD were on an upward curve after that 1-1 drawn series in New Zealand.

They have, instead, regressed to minnow level in this format.

Not sure what they are doing wrong .

bd is back to their default level. There will be one or two flukes here or once in a while and our resident chest beaters will be there to preach every one. As soon as that week of moderate performances go away they again go to hide.

This result is the true reflection of their cricket pedigree (especially in the longer format).

Happy to see them getting yet another pummeling, though 🤣

Captains reflect after Sri Lanka clean sweep Bangladesh in Test series

Sri Lanka delivered another formidable performance in the second match, securing a comprehensive 2-0 whitewash over Bangladesh in the Test series.

It didn’t take Sri Lanka long on the fifth day to wrap up the series, as they picked up the remaining three wickets in less than an hour. Despite Mehidy Hasan Miraz's valiant efforts with 81*, Bangladesh fell short by 192 runs, succumbing to yet another disappointing defeat on home soil.

The victory helped Sri Lanka from the bottom of the World Test Championship standings to fourth place with a 50 percent points percentage.

While renowned for their spinners, Sri Lanka's pacers were the stars of the series, accounting for 33 of the 40 wickets taken against Bangladesh.

Sri Lanka's captain, Dhananjaya de Silva, showered praise on his fast bowlers, acknowledging their pivotal role in securing the resounding series victory.

“As a captain, I think more than going with a spinner on a dead wicket, I like to play a more aggressive brand of cricket, and go with fast bowlers,” Dhananjaya told reporters after the win.

“That's why we went with three quicks. Our bowlers don't need to have grass on the track to get wickets, and they proved that.

"To have a series like this where the fast bowlers win for us is a big morale boost for the team. There are areas in which we have to improve, and we will touch those up. But we will fix these and as that tour [of England] gets close, we'll be 100% ready.

“We're very satisfied with the win. There are many areas for us to improve, and I've talked about those with the team and the coaches are working towards that. If we can learn day by day and raise our game by 1%, we can make winning a habit."

In contrast, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto urged his players to strive for improvement following a disappointing series.

Shanto emphasized the necessity of more match practice for the Test squad ahead of international assignments, advocating for A-team matches to help familiarise with playing conditions.

"If we can send our Test specialists in the Bangladesh A team to play in our next Test destination, we will be better prepared,” Shanto told the reporters.

"They will know about those wickets and conditions. Those who will play white-ball cricket, they have to do the job in the nets and make mental adjustments. Even if the A team series is at home, it will help.

"The way modern cricket is running, those who play the three formats have to make that adjustment. Those who play fewer formats could take better preparations. We have to find a way to adjust to the three formats going forward, and prepare accordingly.”

The Bangladesh batters have faced scrutiny following the whitewash, with the Tigers managing scores of less than 190 in three out of the four innings during the series.

Shanto was critical of his batters but remained hopeful for improvement in the upcoming series.

"We didn't bat well throughout the series. There's no option to give excuses. We can say lots of things but we didn't bat well as a team in the four innings. We aren't as poor a batting unit as we displayed in these two Tests. We are more capable. We have room for improvement both technically and mentally," he said.

Bangladesh's next assignment in the WTC25 is against Pakistan, scheduled for later this year in August, while Sri Lanka will embark on a tour to England for a three-match series around the same time.
