WTH, IK trusted them, they should have had a contract signed between the two. Pathetic by the Chaudhrys.

Politics is a very selfish business. These Chaudhrys were betrayed by PMLN in 1997 Pervez Elahi was promised CMship but after getting 2/3 majority Nawaz Sharif made his own brother Shahbaz Sharif the CM of Punjab. After the take over of Musharraf Chaudhrys were able to settle the score.

PTI should focus on creating a forward block in N league which will abstain from voting during the CM selection.

Yeah, you would think they would learn. I'm hoping we form the government without them and then let everyone know there dirty politics.

Excellent points! This is what it's like having a professional for the job. Ishq Dar was an idoit!

Guys, I am not an expert on Pakistan Politics so I am wondering why Imran has not been officially declared as Prime Minister after his party won the most seats?

Why not dr. Abdul Qadir as the president?

After all because of him, we're a nuclear state.

It would be also a great acknowledging for his work.

You need 137 seats in parliament to get elected firstly.

PTI won 116. They need help of independents and other parties to get elected.

Oh cool thanks, so similar to the elections in the UK when one party does not have a majority, Imran needs the help of other parties/independents to form a government. Let's hope this happens soon and it is not a dragged out process.

A really impressive guy, its a shame that the economy is in such a terrible condition. Just imagine where he could take us if he was on the front foot and not dealing with Noora theft and incompetence.

How about make him in charge of Load Shedding problem. He did say let me help you and in 1 yr i will solve the electricity problem. He should be honoured regardless great man, but not given respect he deserves.

These CM Punjab elections are giving me sleepless nights. better get over with them quickly. Although, I think the tenure of this Punjab govt will be fraught with controversy with ample room for successful no-confidence motions.

I believe PMLN is currently ahead in terms of wooing the independents - healthy money is being offered. Really respect the 4 ex-PTI independents that joined the party today in the face of big money. Also, with snakes like PMLQ on our side, things couldn't get any easier.

The only silver lining being PPP rejecting a coalition with PMLN. Although that's not a surety that their 6 votes will not be bought off in an election as tight as this.

What is the minimum time, after which no confidence motion can be placed?

There could be a no confidence motion every month with these numbers.

How exactly is he setting up power plants in one year? Easy to make such claims.

Just watched Newsbeat on samaa..if you get a chance just check the latest edition. faisal javed was on as the PTI representative and some women called Uzma something was screaming and ranting against the army while a retd general was there too. in one of her outbursts she claimed it was the army's job to do polio vaccinations, election protection.law and order and a host of other things. The general was laughing through it and put her in her place. Faisal just looked completely relaxed and actually was laughing at the PMLN woman..

they are in big trouble. I even saw another programme where an expert claimed that the PMLN will self destruct in three months, especially with the cases pending against them and their leaders losing their seats..

they are ranting and raving whenever they can but they are now really on the precipice. If they cannot make a government in the punjab they are done for..

Well summed up. But this is all the more reason for PTI to be overactive in Punjab. A desperate PMLN will go to any length to keep hold of Punjab. They are offering crores for each independent candidate, which is in addition to an amount covering their election expenses. They will also engage in vote-buying as the elections draw near. They understand that if Punjab slips out of their hands, their party is done for and will see a fate similar to the one suffered by ANP in KP.

It really has become a tense situation. One of the main issues behind the scene is PML-Q seems like has backstabbed PTI in the back. It's ok, both the Elahi brothers have been summoned by the NAB. Let's see what happens there.

IK should have one of the independents records one of these offerings and show it to the public. They can easily also use this offering against them, make a forward block by telling other PMLN MPAs that why are you guys not being offered money? Sometimes to deal with such snakes one has to get his hands dirty. I'm hoping it doesn't get down to this, but seems like PMLN are really opening the money vault for this. They know they can make this amount of money back easily if they get the PPA.

Has PPP officially rejected coalition with them in the Punjab Assembly?

Stay calm :) PMLN is literally begging PTI to allow them form govt in Punjab as they allegedly allowed PTI for form govt in KPK in 2013. 4 independents have already joined and have belief in JKT; he will deliver :)

Heard it on the 9 o clock news. Maybe I confused it with their federal coalition statement because I can't find a news source for it.

They were previously in the PTI, only stood as independents after being denied tickets. Their sympathies were on our side. It will be much more difficult to get the others to ally with us.

The following video basically sums up, I'm pretty sure how a lot of us Pakistanis feel right now :)

Need an overhaul of transmission lines.

That won't end load shedding, there's a huge difference in demand and supply.

Also, this too is not possible in an year. When you're overhauling those lines, you're pretty much stopping all transmission for that period.

Trust me; PMLN is in a panic. I forsee PTI forming govt in Punjab soon in shallah :) JKT is having several meetings a day and good results will follow soon in shallah.

Just heard on Dunya News that Khawaja Asif has won the recount as well in Sailkot NA-73

Faisal Sabzwari did a presser last night. They won't be joining the federal govt.

Find this to be good. PTI doesn't need to associate itself with MQM. We have the numbers either way. Looking at MQMs history with walkouts and the drama they bring, no thank you.

We should be looking to wipe them out completely in Karachi.

Some good news.

The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has consolidated its position to form government in the country’s largest province Punjab, as at least nine MPAs from southern districts pledged support to the party on Saturday.

The party managed to win 123 seats in the Punjab Assembly, according to the results announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), trailing behind the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) with six seats. However, with the support of the nine independents, its tally of seats in the largest provincial assembly would go up to 132, leaving it in need of 17 more MPAs to form the government.

Faisal Sabzwari did a presser last night. They won't be joining the federal govt.

I think there is some internal conflict. JKT gave Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui a call, and they tentatively agreed to get into a coalition government. Now Faisal Subzwari says they won't join. A little while ago, there was news from an insider source that MQM are considering joining the government, but will wait to see if PML-N and PPP take oath or not.

I think they are playing safe, and maybe are waiting to see if they can get any benefit out of the situation. Otherwise, they will most likely come around and join the government.

Number game changes for PTI

https://www.thenews.com.pk/amp/347647-number-game-changes-for-pti?5b5d139f211b2=&__twitter_impression=true

According to him we still need 172 seats( along with reserve seats)

This looks difficult

This makes absolutely no sense, if seats are postponed, cancelled, or if there seats are dropped (due to someone winning on multiple seats), then there aren't 342 members in the house. Anything being voted for in the NA simply needs a 50% majority (except formation of new provinces).

The election of a PM is not any different, and PTI will only need a 50% majority.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this article isn't right.

Also, the reserve seats calculation is wrong too. Many independents have already joined PTI, and more will be joining soon. Independents will be counted as PTI MNAs, and thus, will be counted in the calculation for reserved seats, increasing PTIs numbers.

According my my calculations, assuming all independents join PTI, they will reach 164 seats alone (30 women, and 5 minorities).
If you subtract the extra seats from Imran Khan and Tahir Sadiq, it will go down to 159. Then, you add AML (1), PML-Q (3), BAP (4), BNP (2), and JWP (1), and we are up to 170. Because there were people who won on multiple seats, and some seats were postponed, we won't need 172, we will probably need 167, so we are there without MQM or GDA.

Let's just wait and see. Pretty sure PakWarrior said that we don't need 137, we need less.
I believe PTI needs simple majority, that is 137 seats no matter what.

PTI so far hasn't been able to get the numbers.

PTI right now 110 (116-110)
+Independents 13
+APML 1
+GDA 2
BAP 4
PML Q 3

So this gets PTI to 133. They still need 4 more seats. Now if PTI doesn't get PML-Q, they will be in deeper trouble. Even now they will either need MQM-P or MMA to form the government.

In fact, I got this calculation wrong too, I forgot to add the reserve seats for the other parties.

PTI - 164
AML - 1
PML-Q - 5
BAP - 5
BNP - 4
JWP - 1
Total - 180

Subtract Imran Khan, Tahir Sadiq, Parvez Elahi's extra seats:
Total - 174

We are well over 172 without MQM or GDA (both of which will most likely join too), we could even drop both JWP and AML and still be ahead.

I don't think it's 137 that's needed if that's the case, I think we will need 172 since all reserved MNAs will be added on.

In such a case:
PTI - 164
AML - 1
PML-Q - 5
BAP - 5
BNP - 4
JWP - 1
Total - 180 - 6 = 174

We are safe.

It's looking like PTI may have to compromise and give into Parvez Elahi's demands, and give him CM'ship.

The only other way is if JKT brings back enough independents to Banigala before Parvez Blackmailer strikes a deal with PML-N.

I assumed all independents will join PTI, and then calculated the reserved seats.

General seats - 129

Women:
KPK - 7
Punjab - 19
Sindh - 4
Balochistan - 1

Minorities - 5

Total - 165 (not 164 lol :yk)

= I think you have to start with 109 + 13 = 122. So PTI will have the same issue.

= I think you have to start with 109 + 13 = 122. So PTI will have the same issue.

From what I know, calculation of reserved seats includes all seats won BEFORE they are left. So, Imran Khan's 4, Parvez Elahi's 1, and Tahir Sadiq's 1 will all be included in the calculations.

The gall is of that guy to demand CM'ship on a handful of seats

Anything can happen in Pakistani politics :danish

You know what... If PTI does not get CM'ship of Punjab the first thing they should do is create South Punjab province and nominate their CM from there (I'm sure they have majority PP seats in south)... This would be one way to counter Noon-PPP alliance

Don't believe Samaa news. This morning they said PMLQ refused to form an alliance with PMLN but I didn't see that news anywhere else. PPP might or might not support them but I won't believe what Samaa says. Also, I am not sure who Zardari hates more PMLN or PTI.

And we were questioning if we can trust MQM, lol, these guys turned out to be far worse and less trustworthy.

The issue is that you need to pass the bill through the Punjab Assembly with a two-third majority to form a new province.

Imran still striving to get required numbers to form govt

ISLAMABAD: Though the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has emerged as the single largest party in the National Assembly after the July 25 elections and its leaders have been claiming that they will not need support of any other party, the final preliminary results issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Saturday show that the party is still short of numbers to form its government on its own.

On the other hand, two other major parties — the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) — are expected to meet in a couple of days to devise a joint strategy in a bid to give a tough time to the PTI in parliament.

According to TV reports, senior PPP leader Syed Khursheed Shah will meet PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif in Islamabad on Sunday (today).

The electronic media throughout the day on Saturday kept on mentioning names of possible candidates for key government offices and possible members of the federal cabinet. But sources in the PTI told Dawn that no names were discussed in meetings held in Banigala as the party was still busy in making calculations.

When contacted, the PTI’s Shafqat Mehmood claimed that no formal meeting had taken place in Banigala and that they (PTI leaders) had a general discussion on the challenges the party could face after formation of the government, but no names of federal ministers or chief ministers were discussed.

Mr Mehmood also denied reports that his party had nominated him for the office of the NA speaker.

According to the complete preliminary results announced by the ECP, the PTI has obtained 115 general seats — 12 short of a simple majority — while the PML-N and PPP have won 64 and 43 seats, respectively.

The PTI leaders who have won more than one seat will have to vacate additional seats as the law allows an individual to retain only one seat. PTI chairman Imran Khan has won five seats and he will have to vacate four seats.

Ghulam Sarwar Khan of Taxila has also won two NA seats by defeating former interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and he will also have to vacate one seat.

Former chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pervez Khattak has won both National Assembly and provincial assembly seats. If the PTI decides to nominate him again for the office of the chief minister, he will also have to vacate the NA seat which means that the party’s seats will be reduced to 109.

It was after these calculations that the PTI leadership has now decided to reach out to other smaller groups and independents since the party has already declared that it will not join hands with the PPP and the PML-N.

Sources said that former secretary general of the PTI Jahangir Tareen had established contacts with independents and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) which has won six seats. There are 13 independents who have won the NA seats.

The sources said Mr Khan had himself contacted Mumtaz Bhutto of the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) to formally invite the alliance to join the coalition government.

The PML-Quaid (PML-Q) has won four seats, but it also includes two seats won by former Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, which means that the PTI will only be able to get the support of three PML-Q members. Besides this, the PTI is also expected to get the support of the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) which has bagged four seats.

If the PTI obtains support of the GDA, MQM-P, PML-Q and the Awami Muslim League, the number of its seats will become 122 — still 15 short of the required numbers, which is more than the independents who have won the elections.

Other parties which will have representation in the NA are the Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M) with three members, and Jamhoori Watan Party, Awami National Party and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaniyat with one seat each.

Though the PPP and the PML-N have also rejected the elections results, sources in the two parties told Dawn that they would not support the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA)’s call for boycotting the oath-taking session of the National Assembly.

“We have decided to play the role of an aggressive opposition in parliament,” said a senior PML-N leader who had participated in the MMA-convened multiparty conference in Islamabad on Friday.

A senior leader of the PPP said so far they had not finalised any strategy for the elections of key parliamentary offices.

PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Saturday formed a committee to engage with political parties to discuss the way forward in the post-poll scenario.

According to an official announcement, members of the committee are Yousuf Raza Gillani, Syed Khursheed Shah, Sherry Rehman, Farhatullah Babar, Qamar Zaman Kaira, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and Syed Naveed Qamar.

The sources said contact had been established between the PPP and the PML-N and the leaders of the two sides were expected to hold a meeting in a few days.

Whole thing is very confusing.

We'll see what happens. I don't think we need to worry too much about federal government though, no one has any doubts over PTI forming it one way or another. PTI are confident, analysts aren't even considering any other possibilty, and PPP have already said they will sit in opposition and have absolutely no intention of trying to form government with PML-N.

The main worry at this stage is Punjab government.

Parties start efforts for govt formation in Balochistan

QUETTA: Political parties in Balochistan have started efforts for the formation of a coalition government in the province.

Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) president Jam Kamal Khan Alyani, former chief minister Mir Abdul Quddus Bizenjo and president of his own faction of Balochistan National Party (BNP-M) Akhtar Mengal arrived in Quetta on Saturday.

Jam Kamal has announced forming a committee comprising senior BAP leaders for initiating talks with other parties. He said his party had formally invited all parties having representation in the Balochistan Assembly to join hands for formation of a coalition government.

Akhtar Mengal has called his party’s cabinet council meeting on Sunday. BNP-M’s central committee will meet on Monday, which will take a decision about its candidate for the office of chief executive of the province.

Sources said the BNP-M, which has seven seats in the Balochistan Assembly, was making efforts to nominate Akhtar Mengal for post of chief minister.

While no party in the province could win a simple majority, the BAP has 18 MPAs-elect after three independents joined it in a house of 51 members.

Sardar Masood Khan Luni, Mehta Khan and Mir Mohammad Arif Mohammad Hasni, who were elected from Zhob, Loralai and Chagai, joined the BAP.

Masood Khan Luni defeated candidates of BAP, Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) and Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP).

Mehta Khan defeated seven-time legislator Sheikh Jaffar Khan Mandokhel and strong candidates of the MMA, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf and PkMAP.

Sources in the BAP have claimed that three MPAs-elect of the Awami National Party (ANP) and two belonging to the Hazara Democratic Party (HDP) will support it in the formation of the next government.

“MPAs-elect of ANP and HDP have assured us of their support,” a senior leader of BAP told Dawn, adding that they would formally announce their decision soon.

The number of PTI MPAs-elect is now five after the election of Sardar Babar Musakhail from Musakhail-Sherani.

The MMA has eight MPAs-elect.

The Balochistan National Party-Awami (BNP-A) has won two seats, while the PML-N and PkMAP have managed to win only one seat each.

Murad Shah retains trust of voters & party, set to become CM again

HYDERABAD: Syed Murad Ali Shah — who has been named the chief minister of Sindh by the Pakistan Peoples Party for a second tenure — has comfortably won his Sehwan seat in Jamshoro district. He beat the local ‘Jamshoro Alliance’ nationalist candidate and convener of the Sindh United Party (SUP) Syed Jalal Mehmood Shah with a big margin.

Jalal Shah remained unlucky in the contest as he lost for a fourth time from his home district.

According to unofficial results, Syed Murad Ali Shah secured 50,467 votes against Jalal Shah’s 21,913 votes in the PS-80 constituency this time.

The Jamshoro Alliance was formed by Jalal Shah and disgruntled PPP leader Dr Sikandar Shoro from Kotri. It had fielded consensus candidates on one National Assembly and three Sindh Assembly seats in the district.

Former CM Syed Murad Ali Shah had started off his election campaign on an unpleasant note. Private TV channels had aired footage showing him grabbing the mobile phone of a local reporter at his [CM’s] residence when he was about to board his vehicle. The reporter was recording his conversation with an angry voter. Shah had to clarify his position before the media regarding the incident.

Jalal Shah had also contested against Sikandar Rahupoto on NA-233, besides Syed Murad Shah on PS-80.

Malik Asad Sikandar faced Dr Sikandar Shoro, the suspended deputy general secretary of PPP’s Sindh chapter, on PS-82 while Malik’s friend Gyanchand Esrani faced Malik Changez on PS-81. All candidates fielded by the alliance lost to their PPP rivals.

While Dr Sikandar Shoro lost by a narrow margin, the three PPP candidates, including Murad Shah, trounced their opponents with big margins. Jalal Shah got 81,000 votes against Rahupoto’s over 100,000 votes.

Shah also had to face litigation as Jalal Shah challenged his nomination. The election tribunal dismissed Jalal Shah’s application making him file a constitutional petition in the Sindh High Court, Hyderabad circuit bench, which was dismissed on July 18.

Syed Jalal Shah is the grandson of G.M. Syed — the icon of Sindh’s nationalist struggle and exponent of Sindhudesh. However, he failed to make it to the elected house for a fourth time in a row. He had first won this provincial seat from then Dadu district in 1997 when he defeated Murad Shah’s father Syed Abdullah Shah to mark his parliamentary debut. Jalal’s brother Syed Zain Shah, who is the general secretary of SUP, has also lost to PPP’s Ghulam Qadir Chandio on PS-39 in Shaheed Benazirabad (formerly Nawabshah) district in the July 25 elections.

Murad Shah had become the chief minister in July 2016 replacing PPP veteran Syed Qaim Ali Shah, who has now been elected from Khairpur’s provincial seat. Murad did not contest the 2013 general elections due to having dual nationality. His cousin, Abdul Nabi Shah, had then won the seat and now Murad Shah himself won it on July 25.

SUP’s Roshan Buriro had challenged Murad Shah’s candidature in Nov 2014 before the returning officer concerned and then the Sindh High Court. Later, he withdrew the petition on a directive of Jalal Shah, who again filed the petition. However, the court rejected it.

According to Syed Jalal Shah, he had filed the petition because Murad Shah had made a commitment at the time of withdrawal of the petition in 2014 that he would support him (Jalal Shah) on a National Assembly seat irrespective of PPP’s policy. Murad Shah, however, rejected the claim as “ridiculous”.

Murad Shah supported Malik Asad against Dr Shoro on PS-82 and Malik supported him on PS-80 in lieu of it. Besides, Malik supported Sikandar Rahupoto, a friend of Murad Shah, on Jamshoro’s National Assembly seat.

Dr Shoro decided to contest as an independent candidate after he was denied a PPP ticket on PS-82. Jalal Shah claims that his stronghold, Manjhand, was bifurcated through delimitation to benefit PPP.

The tribal chieftain, Malik Asad — who has remained undefeated in Jamshoro — had won this Kotri seat of the Sindh Assembly as an independent candidate in 1997 after quitting PPP due to his differences with Murad Shah’s father in 1996. He had then joined PML-N’s Sindh coalition government to become the minister for wildlife. Later, he returned to PPP.

Faryal submits Rs2m as surety amount for bail in Rs4.14bn money laundering case

KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party leader Faryal Talpur on Saturday surrendered before the special court (offences in banks) and deposited a Rs2 million surety for the interim pre-arrest bail in a case of Rs4.14 billion alleged money laundering. However, she as well as her brother Asif Ali Zardari did not appear before an FIA-led joint investigation team.

On Friday, Ms Talpur was granted interim bail before arrest by the court till Aug 11 as her six-day protective bail granted to her by the Sindh High Court’s Larkana circuit bench last week was due to expire on July 28. However, the surety amount of Rs2m, as ordered by the trial court, could not be deposited.

Flanked by her counsel Farooq H. Naek, the PPP leader, recently elected as MPA from PS-10 (Larkana-I), appeared in person to surrender before the trial court in compliance with the directive given by the SHC and also deposited a Rs2m surety bond.

Earlier this month Pakistan Stock Exchange’s former chairman Hussain Lawai and banker Taha Raza were detained and booked for allegedly facilitating the opening of 29 ‘fake’ accounts in Summit Bank, Sindh Bank and United Bank Limited, through which suspicious transactions were made to different companies, including M/s Zardari Group. Last week, the investigating officer filed an interim charge sheet in court showing 20 beneficiaries, including Pakistan Peoples Party co-chairman and former president Asif Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur, as absconders in the case.

Asif Zardari, Faryal Talpur fail to appear before JIT

Mr Zardari and his sister Ms Talpur on Saturday did not appear before an FIA-led JIT probing the alleged money laundering case.

However, Ms Talpur sought 15 days’ time saying she was busy before a court for an identical matter, her lawyer said.

FIA assistant director of State Bank Circle Mohammad Ali Abro, who is the investigation officer of the case, sent a letter to Ms Talpur on July 24 asking her to appear before the JIT at 11am on Saturday (July 28) at the FIA Sindh office to record her statement under Section 160 of the Criminal Procedure Code in the FIR (4/2018).

However, her lawyer Farooq H. Naek, through a junior lawyer, submitted a reply before the FIA stating that his client was “busy” on Saturday before the special court (offences in banks) Sindh in connection with her bail before arrest in the said FIR (4/2018) and interim charge sheet.

The lawyer contended that the FIA had recently filed an interim charge sheet wherein she (Ms Talpur) has been “unlawfully” shown as an absconder. It has been stated that in view of the above situation, Ms Talpur was unable to appear before the JIT.

“Please communicate another date for appearance after fortnight, if necessary,” said the lawyer.

FIA sources told Dawn that they had also sent a notice to Asif Zardari through a courier service at Bilawal House in Karachi for his appearance before the FIA-led JIT on Saturday but he did not receive it.

One FIA official who wished not to be named told Dawn that the Supreme Court of Pakistan was expected to take up this case on Aug 6 and the FIA may plead before the apex court to allow them to take custody of all accused and seize their property as not only Mr Zardari and his sister but other accused were also not “cooperating” with the FIA in the case’s investigation.
