Politics - Pakistani 2018 General Election and post-election discussion

Which will be the top party after the upcoming general elections?

 • Total voters

Its great to see that IK is even thinking about her for such high office, but alas and sadly at this stage its impractical.

Yea mafia in Punjab are too strong and our politics too dirty for her to stand a chance as CM Punjab

Correct me if I am wrong,Shehbaz has 1 MNA and 1 MPA seat. If he let go PP seat, we have a re-election.

If PTI and PMLn MNAs let go 5 PP seats, we have re-election on 10 seats and traditionally by-election is 75:25 in favour of King Party (PTI here). A net gain of 2.5 seats.

Now how many MNA elects have won PP ?

Also if Parvez Elahi want to play it this way, he will leave his 2 NA seats and PTI should destroy him in by-elections by giving ticket to current runner up. izzat raas ni i chaudhary ko. If PTI rookies can win from Murree, Lyari, Azizabad, Dir etc, Gujrat is no different, and if current runner up from PMLn is given PTI ticket against Chaudhary. Crush him.

As Mian pointed out those Lahore constituencies are safest for N. May be we can win one ruler MPA seat and not much else.

BUT yes it means that they could lose 2 votes by election time. I'm not sure about the rule that decides the deadline for leaving more than one constituency won.

And you are right about Pervez Elahi's 2 NA seats. Q league could lose 2 NA seats. I don't think Pervez is going to join hands with N league as N league can't offer CM-ship for him either.

Probably, he will demand CM post but will have to ultimately settle for less.

So PTI ended up with 31 out of 39 NA seats in KP.

6 out of 12 NA FATA seats.

14 out of 21 Karachi seats.

3 out of 3 Islamabad seat.

A total of 54 NA seats from 75 KP+Fata+Karachi+Islamabad seats

These seats saved us otherwise we were doomed in Punjab.
punjab was disappointing.. goosht n kmaaal dikhaaaya

No I don't think so.

My uncle, who is a close friend of Dar, said that Dar and his guys told him that Dar won it, when the votes were counted first time.
Khawaja couldn't believe it and he wanted a recount.

That happened and Dar won once again.

Then Khawaja and his team went to the polling agent and said to him that he should go home (typical dhamkiyaan shamkiyaan).

And then we all know what happened...
what happened in recounting??

If you see Dr Yasmeen in Bani Gala tomorrow then its confirm she is in the CMship race.

I dont think they will because they know that they will be finished forever if they do.

I am hoping against hope that they don't but the way they are behaving on media is as if they have won the majority seats in Punjab assembly. They sound acutely over ambitious to me..

I dont think they will because they know that they will be finished forever if they do.

They were already finished. That's the irony of the whole thing.

Especially his son Hussain Elahi won thanks to PTI support. They have contributed 0.0001% to PTI's struggle and now want to have the biggest portion of the cake. Not even 2 days haven gone by since the voting let alone result announcements and they are already showing their true color. I am disgusted to the core.

I was skeptical about it when I first heard about the seat adjustment and now we are finding it out first hand.

I hope there is a way where we can just get rid of these low-life and put them to their place.

If you see Dr Yasmeen in Bani Gala tomorrow then its confirm she is in the CMship race.

For sure she's in the contention but I think she's too soft and meek to lead Punjab assembly which is a Herculean task..

PTI's leadership should have listened to their PTI Gujrat workers who worked for PTI for years and warned about alliance with the crooks. They had better insight about the ground realties.

They are doing their best with an incredibly poor hand but they also know that if they align with Showbiz, they will totally disappear. Just be patient.

Ok so wait help me out somebody.

Federal is with pti for sure right?
Punjab is so-so and there maybe reelection only in punjab not federal? Also pti in kpk 2/3 majority, is that true? Someone reply plz.

What can PTI do when PPP got all the power in Sindh? Hopefully Ik's govt can do something for Karachi at the least to pay back their trust. PTI has to otherwise KHI will go back to MQM/PPP etc.

I am expecting direct funds from Islamabad for Karachi and next year after LB elections we will have a new Mayor in Karachi hopefully from PTI.

Wouldn't the funds channel through the provincial government? Possibility of a heck of a lot of corruption from the goons of PPP.

Secondly, what do you make of the APC last night? Will PMLN go down Fazlu's suicide path? I found it interesting that a person who had no seat in NA was asking others to not take their oath.

Even if they go through provincial government still if Islamabad announces we sent this much amount then provincial government will have to release it they can't keep some in pockets because that will expose their loot.

APC is just a drama for face saving Bazinjo, Achakzai, Siraj, Asfandyar, Fazlu all lost their seats and now they want to use Shobaz shoulder to stay relevant but shobaz is smart wo apne paon per kulhaari nae maarne wala PPP and MQM played well by staying out of it. There is no chance of re elections at all this excercise need big funds and time and well after the speech IK delivered even if we go to re election we will come up with even more seats lol

one quick question any idea what was the result on MPA seats unders NA60? I think election was postponed only on NA not PP so PP seats will give us the idea of our position there

Rawalpindi district was almost a clean sweep for PTI - the party won 12 of the 14 seats here. Only Murtaza Satti lost to an independent in Murree while Naveed Sultan faced an expected loss to Ch. Nisar in Pindi rural (Tarnol/Chakri). Both of the PP seats under NA-60 were won by PTI, including Fayyaz Chohan's.

Do pti needs the help of any major party like ppp in order to come into federal power? Also if they lose punjab, can they still bring changes into the country because punjab is huge and if others are in power there dont think pti being in federal would do much?

In federal PTI isn't reliant on PPP to come to power. They might ally with MQM-P to consolidate their majority given the PMLQ antics since last night.

And yes, if PTI loses Punjab, it will essentially be powerless in introducing reforms in areas where provincial govts holds sway (power, education, health, policing, bureaucracy). So, a loss in Punjab will severely damage PTI's agenda of reforms.

A senator is nothing compared to ruling the province which is 50 percent of Pakistan. And some spend millions to buy that seat.

I guess Changa Manga politics is back now as far as N league is concerned.

Forming Punjab government and then sustaining it with such a vibrant opposition is going to be very difficult.

I guess the same guy who won against SMQ. :)) What an irony !

SMQ's two foes (we know disagreements between SMQ and JKT) sitting together. One made SMQ's desire to be CM problematic by winning as an independent and the other roping him in the party.

Mian when will the lawmakers take their oath and vote for the new PM?

Sitting of the new NA is bound to be convened within 21 days of the day of polls. According to reports First session of the new National Assembly (NA) could be convened on August 11 and the new prime minister (PM) could be elected on August 15. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is bound to notify new members of the national and provincial assemblies within 14 days of their election. The members elected as independents would be asked to take a decision about joining a political party within three days of their notification.

August 11 has historic significance for Pakistan since the founding father Muhammad Ali Jinnah delivered his historic address in the first constituent assembly on the same day in 1947.

Hats off to Bilawal, he has made the mature and right decision to not get involved in this all parties summit, and go straight to the NA and respect the mandate of the people.

Obviously, it would have been good if our central Punjab electables won their seats too, but I think I would personally take this result over PTI getting 4 seats in Karachi but the central Punjab electables winning.

In the long run, these winning candidates from Karachi are a far better investment and will be much more valuable in the National Assembly. These electables from Punjab aren't in this for the long term, these guys will go wherever they see their own personal benefit.

Imran starts preparations for formation of govt at Centre

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan on Friday started preparations for formation of his party’s government at the Centre after the PTI won a majority of seats in the National Assembly.

The PTI is also working to form its government in Punjab and for this purpose it has started contacting leaders of different parties and independent candidates.

PTI leader Jehangir Tarin made telephonic contacts with the head of a faction of Muttahidda Qaumi Movement (MQM), Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui.

The MQM faction and the PPP did not participate in the Multi-Party Conference (MPC) convened by the Muttahidda Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) leader and JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rahman in Islamabad on Friday.

When contacted, PTI spokesman Fawad Chaudhry claimed that PTI had clinched 137 seats of the National Assembly out of 270 and, therefore, it would easily form its government at the Centre.

He also claimed that the number of PTI’s successful candidates in Punjab was 130, while the number of PML-N seats according to unofficial results of the polls, is said to be 127.

“We will definitely form our government in Punjab as we are in contact with 21 independent candidates,” the PTI leader said

When asked who will be the next chief ministers of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, he said that the matter would be decided by PTI chairman Imran Khan.

Talking about provincial setup of Balochistan, he said that the PTI was in a position to form a coalition government in Balochistan as well.

Meanwhile, Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Pakistan retired Vice Admiral Hasham Bin Siddique called on PTI chief Imran Khan at Mr Khan’s Banigala residence and congratulated him on behalf of the Saudi government for success in the general elections.

MQM-P may forge coalition with PTI in Centre

KARACHI: With only six seats in the National Assembly, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan is inching closer to forge a coalition with the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf which lacks a simple majority in the lower house of parliament, it emerged on Friday.

The MQM-P, which only a day before had rejected the election results, also chose not to side with the parties complaining of massive rigging in the general elections. The party’s announcement that it was not attending the multi-party conference convened by JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman in Islamabad is being seen as an attempt to appease the establishment and keep its door open for negotiations with the PTI.

Once estranged parties, the MQM and PTI had developed a working relationship in September last year when PTI’s senior leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi made an attempt to replace then leader of the opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah. The two parties also supported each other’s candidates in the July 25 elections in various constituencies in the interior of Sindh.

Although the PTI has emerged as the single-largest party in the National Assembly with 115 seats, it still requires 22 more votes to get a simple majority. Even if all 13 independents join the PTI, the party still needs nine more MNAs.

Against this backdrop, PTI chief Imran Khan’s point man Jahangir Tareen telephoned MQM-P convener Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui on Friday to pave the way for future negotiations on forming a coalition at the Centre.

MQM-P spokesperson Aminul Haque told Dawn that Mr Tareen congratulated Dr Siddiqui on his party’s success in the election.

He said both sides accepted each other’s mandate and agreed on having a meeting soon. Mr Haque said nothing had been decided about formation of a future government.

But sources said the MQM-P was ready to support the PTI at the Centre but wanted Imran Khan to visit its Bahadurabad headquarters to seek its support. Besides, it wanted a package for Karachi and Hyderabad and funds and powers for the local bodies in the two cities.

In the past, the MQM-P had extended unconditional support to former prime ministers Yousuf Raza Gilani, Raja Pervez Ashraf, Nawaz Sharif and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

Also on Friday, cracks reappeared in the MQM-P when senior leader Dr Farooq Sattar, who lost Wednesday’s election to PTI candidates from two NA seats, attended the multi-party conference in Islamabad against the decision of the party’s coordination committee.

MQM-P leader Faisal Subzwari took to social media to say that Dr Sattar had attended the MPC because he was not immediately contacted. “Everyone knows about our reservations on election results. We are fighting our case and keep fighting. However, right now we have decided not to attend the all-party conference,” he tweeted.

The MQM-P had sent Dr Sattar and senior leader Kanwar Naveed Jameel to Islamabad to attend the MPC.

The sources said that Kanwar Naveed did not attend the MPC on the instructions of the party, but Dr Sattar went to the venue.

Until last month, Dr Sattar headed the PIB group, while Kanwar Naveed was part of the Bahadurabad group of the MQM-P.

The sources said that all candidates of Dr Sattar’s group had lost the election and the four MQM-P candidates who won seats in Karachi were actually the nominees of the Bahadurabad group.

Shahbaz plea for vote recount in Karachi constituency rejected

KARACHI: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz President Shahbaz Sharif‘s request for recounting of votes in NA-249 was rejected by the returning officer (RO) of the constituency on Friday.

In a first-ever contest seeing a top leader of the PML-N in Karachi’s electoral arena, Mr Shahbaz, according to unofficial results, has lost to the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s Faisal Vawda with a narrow margin of 718 votes.

PML-N leader Rana Mashood had filed the request on behalf of Mr Sharif with the returning officer of NA-249 from where PTI candidate Wadya has been unofficially declared elected with 35,344 votes. Mr Sharif emerged as the runner-up as he bagged 34,626 votes and Mufti Abid Mubarak of the Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan secured the third position by obtaining 23,981 votes.

In his application requesting for recounting of the votes, Mr Mashood said that Mr Vawda had won the seat with a the winning margin of only over 600 votes while over 3,000 votes were rejected during the counting.

Commenting on the decision of the RO, Mushahidullah Khan, a senior leader of the PML-N, said had the election process been fair and transparent, the returning officer would have accepted Mr Shahbaz’s request for recounting of votes, instead of ‘summarily’ rejecting his application.

It appeared that in many constituencies PML-N candidates were in winning position but they had been ‘defeated through rigging’ and now their applications for vote recount were being rejected “under pressure”, Mr Khan alleged. He said that the PML-N would file an appeal with the election commission against the decision of the RO whose behaviour “has proved that the party is not being provided a level playing field”.

Punjab picture

As the process of filing of appeals for vote recount by losing candidates in Elections-2018 began on Friday, a number of applications for recount were filed in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The returning officers of two National Assembly constituencies in Lahore allowed applications of PML-N leader Khwaja Saad Rafiq and Abdul Aleem Khan of the PTI for holding recount in their respective constituencies — NA-131 and NA-129.

PTI chairman Imran Khan has won NA-131 against Mr Rafiq while the PML-N’s Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has defeated Aleem Khan in NA-129. Both runner-up candidates Mr Rafiq and Mr Khan have alleged discrepancies in the vote count process.

Meanwhile, the RO for PP-162 issued a notice to returned candidate Yasin Sohail of the PML-N on another identical application of Aleem Khan, who has lost from the provincial assembly constituency.

In Faisalabad, former minister Abid Sher Ali (NA-108), former MPA Malik Nawaz (PP-110), former MNA Dr Nisar Jutt of the PTI (NA-106) and Masood Nazir, an independent candidate (NA-105), filed applications for vote recount.

In Multan, the returning officer for NA-158 rejected former prime minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani’s application for recounting/re-examination of ballot papers.

The ROs for NA-154 and NA-157, however, accepted similar applications submitted by Abdul Qadir Gilani and Ali Musa Gilani, sons of the former premier. The recount will be held in the presence of all the candidates on Saturday.

In Sahiwal, Mian Farrukh Manika of the PTI retained his winning position in PP-191, Pakpattan, after a recount.

Muhammad Tufail Jutt of the PML-N, a runner-up in NA-149 Chichawatni filed an application for a recount and the RO decided to take up the application on Monday.

Mian Tufail Jutt has been defeated by Rai Murtaza Iqbal of the PTI. Mr Iqbal obtained 137,236 votes against 111,552 of Mr Jutt.

In Okara, the RO rejected the application filed by the PTI’s Chaudhry Muhammad Abdullah Tahir for recount in PP-188.

From PP-190, the PTI’s runner-up Rai Hammad Aslam Kharal submitted an application for a recount and the RO issued notices for Saturday to all the 13 candidates, including the winner.

In Gujrat, PTI candidate for NA-71 (Sara-i-Alamgir-Kotla) Muhammad Ilyas Chaudhry filed an application for a recount after the seat was won by Abid Raza Kotla of the PML-N.

The returning officer fixed Saturday to listen to both the parties after which a decision would be made.

In Jhang, the RO fixed Saturday for recount of NA-114 votes on the application of Faisal Saleh Hayat.

The recount applications of the PTI’s Muhammad Nawaz Bharwana (PP-127) and independent candidate Madhu Lal Hussain (PP-129) were also accepted.

In Gujranwala, PTI candidate for PP-54 Rizwan Aslam Butt submitted his application for recounting of votes and the returning officer summoned the contesting parties on Saturday.

In Toba Tek Singh, PTI candidate from in NA-112 Chaudhry Muhammad Ashfaq submitted a similar application.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

In Mansehra, the retuning officer of NA-13 ordered recounting of votes on the application of the losing aspirant of the PML-N, Sardar Shahjehan Yousuf.

In Haripur, PML-N candidate for NA-17 Babar Nawaz submitted an application for recounting and the decision on his application will be made by the RO on Monday.

In Abbotabad, PTI candidate from NA-15 Ali Asghar has submitted application for recounting. In Mardan PTI candidate Muhammad Atif Khan has submitted an application for recounting on NA-21 which has been won by Awami National Party candidate Amir Haider Khan Hoti.

New govt to decide about Nawaz-Maryam ECL issue: caretakers

ISLAMABAD: The caretaker federal cabinet on Friday left it to the new government to decide about putting names of jailed leaders of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz on the Exit Control List (ECL).

The cabinet meeting, chaired by caretaker Prime Minister Nasirul Mulk, also deferred some other important matters to the new government to be formed soon.

A participant of the meeting told Dawn it did not come under the mandate of the interim government to put names of Mr and Ms Maryam on the ECL.

Another issue left for the new government was the appointment of the new chief executive officer of Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

A proposal was presented before the cabinet regarding removal of the incumbent president of the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) and the meeting also left the matter for the new government.

A separate proposal was placed before the cabinet regarding allowances of staff of the Election Commission of Pakistan, but the issue was also deferred by the cabinet.

Following the expiry of the five-year term of the PML-N government, the caretaker government was formed on June 5 to hold 2018 elections on July 25. The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has taken a lead in the polls and it is likely to form the government at the Centre.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB), which is pursuing corruption cases against Mr Sharif, had requested the previous PML-N government and the present interim government to place the names of Mr Sharif, Ms Maryam and retired Capt Muhammad Safdar on the ECL, but both governments turned down the requests. The first request was made on Feb 11 and the second last month.

The Accountability Court, Islamabad, has sent Mr Sharif, Ms Maryam and Safdar to Adiala jail on corruption charges.

The cabinet also took some other decisions and approved assigning of additional charge of posts of Member Technical in Pakistan Telecommunications Authority to Yawar Yaseen, Director General of (Enforcement) PTA, and the charge of Member Compliance & Enforcement to Chaudhry Ali Asghar, Director General (Law), for three months.

The cabinet approved appointment of Muhammad Zareef Baloch, District & Sessions Judge, as the Judge of Special Court (court of narcotics substances), Quetta.

The terms and conditions of appointment of the chairman, 8th Wage Board, were also approved by the cabinet.

The cabinet also approved transfer of a case of FOA SBC/Karachi from Anti-Terrorism Court, Karachi-II, to Anti-Terrorism Court, Islamabad.

The meeting authorised finance division to issue a Letter of Guarantee for local loan for two nuclear power projects in Karachi called K-2/K-3. Amendments to by-laws of 106 and 124 of the Chartered Accountants Bylaws, 1983, were also approved by the cabinet.

Election vote count: PTI poised to form government with 115 seats so far

With more than two days elapsing since the counting of poll results began, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has retained its considerable edge over its contenders, bagging 115 of the total 270 seats on which elections were held, according to the preliminary results announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The PML-N is a distant second, leading on 64 seats, while the PPP has won 43. The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) ─ an alliance of multiple religious parties ─ has managed to secure just 13 seats.

Independent candidates have also won 13 spots in the National Assembly, while the MQM-P has six seats to its name. The PML-Q, meanwhile, has won four seats, and the Balochistan National Party (BNP) and Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) have grabbed two seats each.

Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) has three seats, while Sheikh Rashid's Awami Muslim League (AML) and Awami National Party (ANP) each have one seat.

The national voter turnout for the polls was 51.85 per cent, an additional director of the ECP announced in a press conference.

He added that the turnout in Balochistan stood at 44.79pc, at 45.52pc in KP, 55.9pc in Punjab and 48.11pc in Sindh.

Punjab Assembly
Despite performing poorly nationwide, the PML-N has emerged as the largest political party in Punjab with 127 seats, followed by the PTI (123 seats). Independent candidates have won 29 seats in the province, while PML-Q has won seven.

The PPPP has only won six seats in Punjab while PML-F, Jamshed Dasti's Awami Raj Party and Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) have won a seat each, according to the ECP.

Sindh Assembly
The PPPP appears set to form government in Sindh for the third consecutive term. The party has won 74 seats in the Sindh Assembly while the PTI has edged past MQM-P to emerge as the second-largest political party with 23 seats to its names — mostly from Karachi.

MQM-P is in the third position with 16 seats while GDA — a newly formed alliance of parties in the province — has won 11. Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) and MMA have won one seat each.

Balochistan Assembly
BAP has won 14 seats in Balochistan Assembly, becoming the largest party in the province, while the MMA is in the second place with nine seats.

Akhtar Mengal's BNP has won five seats in the province while the PTI has won four.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
PTI has dominated electoral proceedings in KP, bagging a whopping 67 seats, followed by the MMA which has only managed to win 10. The ANP's seat tally stands at six while the PML-N has won five. The PPPP has won four seats in the KP Assembly.

Imran Khan should try to take to them on board.

I think they should be invited to form government in Balochistan, or even join PTI if they want. It would give them a far bigger platform to further their cause.

Right now:

MMA - 9
PTI - 4
BAP - 15
BNP - 7
HDP - 2
ANP - 3
BNP-A - 1
PML-N - 1
PKMAP - 1
IND - 5

I have heard 3 independents have joined PTI, taking PTI to 7. If these HDP guys join PTI, it will take PTI to 9. The other 2 independents, I would expect to join BAP, taking them to 17.

PTI, HDP, and BAP can form government alone, and keep the extremist MMA out!

US questions fairness of Pakistan elections

WASHINGTON: The United States on Friday questioned the fairness of Wednesday’s elections in Pakistan adding that it shared the concerns expressed by the European Union and the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.

In a statement released to the media, the US State Department underlined what it said were flaws in the pre-voting electoral process and the constraints placed on freedom of expression and association.

“The United States shares concerns about flaws in the pre-voting electoral process, as expressed by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan,” said the department’s spokesperson Heather Nauert.

“These included constraints placed on freedoms of expression and association during the campaign period that were at odds with Pakistani authorities’ stated goal of a fully fair and transparent election.”

Ms Nauert said the United States concurs with the conclusions of the European Union Election Observation Mission, whose report notes that while there were positive changes to the legal framework for elections in Pakistan, these were “overshadowed by restrictions on freedom of expression and unequal campaign opportunities”.

The United States also “has deep reservations over the participation of terrorist-affiliated individuals in the elections,” said the US official while commending Pakistani voters for “fully rejecting these candidates” at the ballot box on Wednesday.

“Along with our international partners, the United States will continue to encourage a broadening of opportunities for political participation for all Pakistanis, and for the further strengthening of legitimate, democratic institutions,” said Ms Nauert.

“As Pakistan’s elected leaders form a new government, the United States will look for opportunities to work with them to advance our goals of security, stability, and prosperity in South Asia,” she added.

In the opening paragraph, the State Department also commended “the courage of the Pakistani people, including many women,” who turned out to vote and showed resolve to determine their country’s future.

“We condemn the horrific acts of terrorist violence that marred this process, including the latest attack outside a polling station in Quetta on election day. We offer our deepest condolences to the victims and their families, and wish a speedy recovery to those injured,” said the US official.

Ms Heather said that the development of strong democratic and civilian institutions of governance and a vibrant civil society was critical to Pakistan’s long-term stability and prosperity.

UN chief praises Pakistanis’ ‘commitment to democracy’

UNITED NATIONS: Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary General, has congratulated the people of Pakistan upon the conclusion of elections, saying that he “looks forward to the formation of a new government”.

“By exercising their constitutional right to vote, the people of Pakistan have reaffirmed their commitment to a democratic Pakistan,” he said in a statement read out by his spokesman Stephane Djuarric on Friday.

“The Secretary General commends the Election Commission of Pakistan for organising the elections, taking initiatives to train women and for making efforts to enhance the inclusion of women, persons with disability and other marginalised groups, as well as first-time voters, in the electoral process,” the UN chief said.

“The Secretary General looks forward to the formation of a new government and wishes it success in providing the people of Pakistan a stable, democratic, and prosperous future,” the statement said.

Details of expenses incurred on houses of judges sought

ISLAMABAD: Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui of the Islamabad High Court (IHC), who created quite a stir recently by accusing intelligence agencies of interfering in affairs of the judiciary, requested the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) on Friday to summon the record about expenses incurred on maintenance of official residences of all the superior court judges.

For the first time in the country’s judicial history, the SJC will on Monday commence open hearing of a reference against Justice Siddiqui for allegedly spending more money on the refurbishment of his official residence than he should have. A complaint in this regard was filed by a retired employee of the Capital Development Authority (CDA).

Headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, the SJC will start recording evidence against the judge. However, Justice Siddiqui has requested the council through two letters to order production of certain documents and information that he could use in his defence. He said it was not possible for him to get hold of the information sought on his own.

The information the IHC judge has sought includes the total expenditure incurred during the last seven years on the maintenance of each official accommodation of the judges of the Supreme Court, Federal Shariat Court and all the high courts.

The applicant has said the council should also summon records relating to the expenses incurred on the houses owned by the superior court judges but declared as official accommodation.

The list and particulars of those superior court judges should also be provided who despite having official accommodations kept on receiving, or are still receiving, house rent allowance at a rate of Rs65,000 per month.

Justice Siddiqui has also asked for the details of furniture and other articles provided in the official accommodations at state expense, besides the record regarding change of furniture and other household articles.

The applicant has also sought details of the alterations, modifications or additions made on the orders of the superior court judges in the official accommodations occupied by them.

The applicant said that necessary directive to the Auditor General Pakistan Revenues, provincial accountant generals, Pakistan Works Department, CDA and the provincial communication and works department should be issued for the provision of the required material for the perusal of SJC. An advance copy of the required data should be provided to him.

Justice Siddiqui has also asked for a notification regarding retirement of Shahid Singha for whom the former was accused of directing good care at a private hospital because the CDA hospital lacked facilities needed for the treatment of the ailment the latter was suffering from.

The IHC judge has also asked for details of the inquiries and criminal proceedings initiated against Ali Anwar Gopang — a senior CDA official, who originated the reference the judge is facing — and the status of inquiry into illegal appointments made by him, including his son Kashif Anwar Gopang.

The list of relatives of Mr Gopang has also been asked for by the applicant in addition to the judicial proceedings as well as contempt of court proceedings against him.

The applicant has also asked for the details of inquiries and criminal proceedings made against Ghulam Sarwar Sindhu — a senior official of the CDA — and judicial proceedings pending against him and observations made against his conduct by the IHC in cases regarding diplomatic shuttle service contract, plots carved out from parks, playgrounds, green areas and providing direct access to the petrol pumps and CNG stations from the Islamabad Highway instead of service road.

Justice Siddiqui has also asked for the service record and the manner in which Sarwar Sindhu got the post of CDA’s director general (planning). He has also asked for a comparative statement of construction at House No 2, Street No 60, F-7/4, Islamabad, where the judge currently lives, before and after the allotment to the applicant.

He has also asked for the date on which the house was vacated by Tariq Aziz, the-then principal secretary to former president retired Gen Pervez Musharraf, and the condition of the house at the time of allotment to the applicant.

He has also sought details of the expenditure incurred by the CDA/PWD on the directive of the earlier occupant, and alterations, modifications and additions made on the orders of Mr Aziz.

MMA stages rallies in KP against alleged rigging in elections

PESHAWAR: Workers of religio-political parties took to the streets in Peshawar and other parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Friday to protest against alleged rigging in the general elections held on July 25.

Rallies were organised on the appeal of Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the president of Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA), an alliance of five religio-political parties.

Rallies were taken out in Dera Ismail Khan, Orakzai, Buner, Lakki Marwat, Mardan, Malakand, Battagram, Karak and Lower Dir.

Like other political parties, MMA was also humbled in the elections and its top leaders, including Fazlur Rehman and Sirajul Haq, the Jamaat-i-Islami chief, suffered defeat at the hands of PTI candidates.

The protesters blocked the Karakoram Highway, the land route between Pakistan and China, for traffic for more than five hours to protest against alleged rigging and manipulation of the election results.

Hundreds of activists of various religious parties took out a protest rally from a mosque in the Peshawar city that turned into a big public meeting at Bajauri Gate. The protesters were carrying placards and banners and chanted slogans against the Election Commission of Pakistan, caretaker setup and the other state institutions.

“The role of judiciary and the army has disturbed every Pakistani,” read a banner. Another read: “Save dignity of vote. We will not let the agent of Jews to be imposed on the nation,” referring to Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chairman Imran Khan.

Addressing the protesters, the speakers alleged that billions of rupees were wasted on the rigged elections. They said that judiciary should clear its position in that regard. They termed the polls a big fraud in the history of Pakistan as results were manipulated.

The speakers urged the Supreme Court of Pakistan to take suo motu notice of what they said massive rigging in the elections. They alleged that foreign agenda was being imposed on the nation.

In Battagram, workers of Rah-i-Haq Party and MMA blocked Karakoram Highway to register their protest against the alleged fraud in the elections. The candidates who lost polls in the PK-29 constituency and their supporters led the rally, raising slogans.

Rah-i-Haq Party candidate for PK-29 Atta Mohammad, candidate for NA-12 Saeed Ahmed, MMA candidate for NA-12 Qari Mohammad Yusuf and independent candidate Maulana Rasheed Ahmed addressed the protesters.

Traffic remained disrupted for several hours on the busy highway.

The protest leaders said that Atta Mohammad was leading in PK-29 with 4,000 votes after counting of votes in 128 polling stations out of 149 stations, but suddenly results of other polling stations were stopped and were announced after two hours.

They said that they had recorded video footages as a proof of rigging and polling of bogus votes, adding while they were making videos officials tried to snatch their phones but they did not succeed.

They said that polling continued till 11pm at Trand Gidri polling station while at a polling station in Trand government high school it continued till 9.30pm. They said that they had already submitted an application to the RO for recounting of votes, but the authorities rejected their appeal.

In Lakki Marwat, the district chapter of JUI-F took out a rally in Naurang town to record their protest against alleged rigging in the elections.

A good number of activists participated in the rally. MNA-elect from NA-36 Maulana Mohammad Anwar, MNA-elect from NA-51 Mufti Abdul Shakoor and other leaders of JUI-F attended the rally.

They condemned the alleged rigging and said that mainstream leadership of the political parties was kept from the National Assembly under a conspiracy. They rejected the poll results and demanded re-election in a transparent and impartial manner.

In Buner, JUI-F workers staged a demonstration in front of the press club against the alleged rigging in the elections. The protesters said that they would not accept the poll results.

The speakers termed handing over of magisterial powers to the army on the polling day interference in the election process. They alleged that a western lobby was bent upon empowering Imran Khan, the PTI chief, to unleash liberalism and secularism in Pakistan.

In Timergara, MMA losing candidates Maulana Gul Naseeb Khan, Maulana Asadullah, Muzafar Said and others rejected the results of the election and demanded of the ECP to hold re-polling on all constituencies of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The demand was made during different protest rallies at Chakdara and Talash which were attended by scores of MMA supporters.

The MMA candidates said that election was rigged and its results were made controversial.

Former provincial minister, Muzafar Said claimed that the returning officer was refusing to hand over form 45 to him. He said that religious parties were being deprived of their right to represent people in the parliament under a conspiracy.

Will he need to resign from the NA before the PM is elected or after? Not a big deal, he can try his luck, but PTI will need to elect a dummy CM until then, which could really mess things up more if groupings are created.

Don't understand why he's pulling this crap. Don't think he would do a good job as CM Punjab.

On top of that PTI will lose an NA seat (even though I think we can easily win it back). Honestly think, with the current situation, Dr. Yasmin Rashid or Aleem Khan are the best canidates, on top of that we don't lose an NA seat in the process.

Punjab PTI ka :) JKT is on fire. The guy single handedly roping in Independent candidates from Punjab and other areas. What a man he is, a true gem.

I guess the same guy who won against SMQ. :)) What an irony !

SMQ's two foes (we know disagreements between SMQ and JKT) sitting together. One made SMQ's desire to be CM problematic by winning as an independent and the other roping him in the party.

yeah Same dude, who couldnt get ticket from PTI, went independent, beaten SMQ and now again joined PTI :))

SMQ and Aleem Khan are terrible choices for CM Punjab.

Can you imagine what sort of Punjab it would be under Aleem Khan? The guy who has reportedly used his influence etc to get away with alot of things might make Punjab the mirror image of himself.

Dr Yasmeen because of her age and being a female will not be able to tackle Punjab imo.

Honestly, I don't think we should underestimate Dr Yasmin. She is a really strong woman, and I think she totally has it in her to take on the challenge. Even look at the way she ran her campaign, she is willing to go above and beyond, outside her comfort zone, to deliver for the people. That is exactly the type of person we need.
