PTI to formally nominate Imran Khan as prime minister today

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) will formally nominate party chairman Imran Khan for the post of prime minister today (Monday).

PTI’s parliamentary committee will meet at a private hotel in Islamabad in this regard.

All newly-elected MNAs and senators belonging to the party have been asked to attend the meeting.

In a message on Twitter today, party leader Naeemul Haque said Imran will meet all NA members of the party today, followed by PTI's members from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab assemblies on the following two days.

He added that the party chief will "outline his plans for legislative and political programs of his government".

Haque claimed further that Imran plans to bring the best talent to government services and programmes.

A day earlier, PTI spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry said the party is in the clear to form the government in the centre.

"PTI’s seat tally in the National Assembly currently stands at 125 after the inclusion of independents,” he said.

Allies and reserved seats will take the PTI tally to 174 seats in NA, he added.

Further after the support of Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M), the party will have 177 seats, Chaudhry said.

The PTI spokesperson further claimed that the party has a majority in Punjab as well. “We now have 186 seats in the Punjab Assembly,” he said.

PTI had emerged in the lead with 116 NA seats during the July 25 polls.

A day after the elections, Imran had in a speech laid out his domestic and foreign policy.

The cricketer-turned-politician has also reportedly sent out invitations for his oath-taking ceremony as the 22nd prime minister of Pakistan.

However, the political parties aligned against PTI have announced that they are fielding their own candidate for prime minister in Parliament.

The parties, including the PML-N, PPP, MMA, and ANP, have decided to field their own consensus candidates for the prime minister, speaker and deputy speaker slots in the National Assembly.

Fazl vacates residence in Ministers’ Enclave after one-and-a-half decades

ISLAMABAD: Maulana Fazlur Rehman has vacated his official residence in the Ministers’ Enclave after staying there for more than one-and-a-half decades.

Sources in the Pakistan Public Works Department (Pak-PWD), which maintains Bungalow No. 29 where the Maulana stayed, told Dawn that the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl chief left the house on July 31.

They said that before leaving the official residence, Maulana Fazl paid all dues of the Pak-PWD.

Maulana Fazl was chairman of the Kashmir Committee, who enjoys the status of a federal minister.

It has been learnt that the Maulana has shifted to a farm house of his party’s Senator Talha Mehmood in Chak Shahzad.

Meanwhile, the Capital Development Authority has started renovation of the National Assembly speaker’s residence in the Ministers’ Enclave where PTI chairman Imran Khan will stay after taking the oath as prime minister.

Mr Khan has refused to stay in the palatial Prime Minister House as he wanted to turn it into a university. Therefore, the NA speaker’s residence, the biggest house in the enclave, is being renovated for him.

Now what the bloody hell is this

How a phone app and a database helped PTI clinch election victory
5
ISLAMABAD: A phone app and a database of more than 50 million voters were key weapons in the successful campaign of Imran Khan in last month’s general election.

How Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) used the database and the associated app represents a sea change in the antiquated way in which Pakistan’s biggest parties conduct elections, from pre-poll targeting of voters to on-the-day mobilisation of supporters.

PTI was secretive about the technology plan ahead of the July 25 poll, fearing rivals could copy it, but several party workers showed Reuters how the app transformed their campaign and gave them an edge.

The phone app proved especially useful in getting supporters to the polls when the government’s own telephone information service giving out polling station locations suffered major problems on election day, leaving other parties scrambling.

It partly explains why PTI managed to win tight-margin races across the country.

‘CMS’ was a response to Imran’s complaints after 2013 poll loss that the party failed to translate mass popularity into votes

“It had a great impact,” said Amir Mughal, tasked with using the app and database, known as the Constituency Management System (CMS), to elect Asad Umar, a lawmaker who won his seat in Islamabad and is likely to be finance minister in the PTI-led government.

The small CMS unit led by Mr Mughal, Asad Umar’s personal secretary, was typical of how PTI set up teams in constituencies across Pakistan to mine the database, identifying voters by household, zeroing-in on “confirmed” PTI voters, tagging them on the app, and ensuring they turned out on election day.

“Work that would take days…is being completed in one to two hours,” Mr Mughal said minutes after the polls shut.

PTI surpassed expectations to scoop about 115 seats out of 270 where polls were held, while Pakistan Muslim League-N, headed by ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif, trailed in second with 64 seats.

Developed by a small tech team, the CMS was a key response to Mr Khan’s bitter complaints after the 2013 poll loss that his party failed to translate mass popularity into votes because it did not know the “art of winning elections”.

PML-N ran a more erratic campaign, hurt by divisions within the party and the loss of key leaders who were either disqualified or in case of Nawaz Sharif and his daughter, jailed.

Weeks before the elections, Mr Khan sent out a video via WhatsApp urging PTI candidates to embrace CMS.

“I have seen and experienced how it works and I’m using it in all five constituencies I am contesting,” Mr Khan said in the video message. “The faster you apply this system, the easier your life will become,” he added.

Villains
Created by former US-based real estate businessman Tariq Din and Shahzad Gul, a tech consultant, the early version of the system was not immediately embraced by PTI.

But Mr Umar and wealthy politician Jahangir Tareen Khan, a close aide to Mr Khan, were among the first to see its potential. After the software helped deliver strong results in the 2015 local elections, the party was won over, according to senior PTI officials who work on the CMS software.

For the national election PTI focused on 150 constituencies it felt it had the best chance of winning. Party workers said they used scanning software to digitise publicly-available electoral voter lists to create the database.

By typing in a voter’s identity card number into the app, PTI workers could see details such as family home address, who else lived in the same household, and where they needed to vote.

It became so crucial to the PTI campaign that when on election day the programme went down for an hour, it triggered some panic in the partys ranks.

A senior CMS official showed Reuters WhatsApp messages that flooded in when the system ground to a halt under the weight of database searches, which totalled 20 million on election day.

“What the hell is going on?,” inquired one of Mr Khan’s closest allies. This politician then called the CMS team and made his feelings clear, saying: “If the system doesn’t work, we will lose the elections and you guys will be the villains.”

When CMS came back up, Mr Khan’s ally messaged again: “Thank God.”

CMS architects say the system power was only partly utilised as there was not enough time to train workers across the country and some politicians resisted using it.

Advantages
In the run up to election day, PTI workers were also able to print out parchis, or slips, that voters needed to enter the polling station. PML-N workers had to help voters fill the paper slips with a pen.

In a large nation where illiteracy hovers above 40 per cent, that meant PML-N workers had to write out millions of slips for the 12.9m voters who backed PML-N, stopping those workers from canvassing or doing other vital work.

“It’s a paradigm shift,” said another senior CMS operator. “We changed the party, turning social media popularity into reality.”

Maybe shouldn't have publicised it until the next election atleast, now PPP and PMLN will be looking into producing their own version. Had all the PTI politicans been onside we could easily get a majority. My guess it's the so called 'electables' who didn't buy into it The old ways are dying, adapt or die.

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s parliamentary committee officially nominated party chairman Imran Khan for the office of prime minister.

The confirmation came after a meeting of the party’s lawmakers in Islamabad. Reportedly, the party’s vice-chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi has been finalised for speaker position of National Assembly speaker, succeeding Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senior leader Ayaz Sadiq.

The resolution to nominate Imran for Pakistan’s next prime minister was tabled by Qureshi and was unanimously approved by the meeting.

PTI’s Imran Ismail is also reportedly in the running for the slot of governor Sindh after Mohammad Zubair resigned earlier after being nominated in 2017.

It was learnt earlier that PTI’s parliamentary committee, scheduled to meet today, will formally endorse PTI chief Imran Khan’s nomination for the post of prime minister. All newly-elected MNAs and senators were asked to attend the meeting.

A party spokesperson said that the meeting had been called for holding a ‘general discussion’ among parliamentarians. PTI’s spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry said that the party would formally announce Imran’s nomination for the post of PM.

Members of the meeting, he said, would also discuss the post-election domestic political scenario.

Bushra Bibi’s daughter joins PTI

ISLAMABAD: The daughter of Bushra Bibi – the wife of prime minister nominee Imran Khan – has joined the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Geo News reported on Monday.

Mehru Hayat, Bushra Bibi’s daughter from her past marriage, joined the Imran Khan-led PTI along with her friend, Farah Khan.

Bushra Bibi said on the occasion that working to resolve women’s issues remains her foremost priority.

The PTI earlier today formally nominated Imran Khan as the party's candidate for prime minister, after emerging victorious in the general elections held countrywide on July 25.

Imran married Bushra Bibi, his spiritual adviser, in a private ceremony in February this year. His marriage to the mother-of-five is his third, and her second. She was previously married to a senior customs official named Khawar Fareed Maneka.

My prediction is that the PMLn will be done and dusted within 6 to 8 months. It will ultimately lead to the reformation of the original PML that will run against IK and the PPP in 2023.

Where is this magic 6 months number coming from? Lol As long IK’s relation doesn’t deteriorate too much with the millitary establishment we will be fine. Opposition cannot bring vote of no confidence against IK if military isn’t on their back.

I can’t see how relation will get bad within 6 months.

The problem is that Imran and PTI might not have to commit a blunder. The situation of the economy is dire and that's putting it mildly.

I know but do you really think China will just see their $50-60b investment/loan for CPEC disappearing with our fall? They will sit down with us again and will find a way out. They recently pumped $2b.

Chinese are loan sharks. Sitting down with them again on loan terms would mean a significant disadvantage for Pakistan. Look what they did to Sri Lanka in terms of Hambanota Port.

The Chinese financed and constructed the doomed project (it was within a few hundred miles of Sri Lanka's premier Colombo Port). Sri Lanka couldn't pay them back as the port made heavy losses, so China provided more loans to pay off the previous oness. With Sri Lanka on the verge of defaulting a second time, the Chinese struck a one-sided deal with them in which they took ownership of the port for 99 years along with 100 hectares of land surrounding it.

In late 2014, they started docking submarines and warships there - effectively putting their policing on in one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world just off of Malacca, meanwhile being a stone's throw away from India.

Although the chances of Chinese doing the same with Pakistan are lower, but they cannot be ruled out as we are already on step two (more loans to pay of existing loans). Also, with the oil-rich Hormuz shipping lanes very close to Gwadar, China would love to increase their stake beyond commercial activities.

PTI urges chief justice to take notice of poll results delay

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has urged Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar to take notice of a possible delay in the announcement of the official results of more than 20 constituencies, fearing that the move can create a constitutional crisis.

Talking to Dawn, PTI information secretary Fawad Chaudhry said the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and various courts had ordered withholding of 20 results of the July 25 elections due to various reasons whereas he had come to know that six more petitions challenging the victories of the candidates had been filed in courts on Monday.

Mr Chaudhry said withholding of the results of such a large number of constituencies of the National Assembly and the provincial assemblies on “legal and administrative grounds” was “inappropriate”.

The PTI information secretary was of the opinion that the ECP and courts had already ordered recount in some 48 constituencies. The situation could cause a delay “in the formation of the government”, he said.

Mr Chaudhry said the Supreme Court had mentioned the reasons for which recounting of votes could take place.

“We request the CJP to take notice of this inappropriate delay,” he added.

The PTI leader, who has won both the National Assembly and the Punjab Assembly seats from Jhelum, said under the Constitution, sessions of the assemblies were required to be called 21 days after the general elections.

Article 91(2) of the Constitution states: “The National Assembly shall meet on the twenty-first day following the day on which a general election to the Assembly is held, unless sooner summoned by the President.”

He said under Article 91(2) of the Constitution, the first sessions of the National and provincial assemblies must be summoned by August 15. He said there could be a serious constitutional crisis if a sizeable number of legislators were not able to take the oath and participate in the elections of the speakers, deputy speakers, prime minister and the provincial chief ministers.

Responding to a question, he said according to unofficial results, PTI candidates had won in more than 10 constituencies whose results had been withheld. He admitted that his party’s candidates had also challenged the victories of their rivals in many constituencies where the results were expected to be withheld. He was of the opinion that the cases should be expedited so that the members could participate in the elections of the key parliamentary offices.

Although the PTI has emerged as the single largest party in the National Assembly, it has been struggling to achieve the required number of members in the house to form its government at the Centre. Similarly, in Punjab, the PML-N has become the single largest party, but there is a small difference of just seven seats between the two parties which are presently busy in wooing the independents in an effort to form the government in the province.

Sources told Dawn that there were eight National Assembly constituencies among 20 constituencies whose results were expected to be withheld. These constituencies include Lahore’s NA-131 constituency from where according to unofficial results PTI chairman Imran Khan has defeated former railways minister Khawaja Saad Rafique.

Similarly, the ECP has also withheld the result of one NA and two Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly constituencies of Nowshera from where former KP chief minister Pervez Khattak has won. The ECP has stopped announcement of the results for violation of the election code by Mr Khattak when he had used inappropriate language against his rivals during the campaign. Mr Khattak has already tendered an apology through a video message over his act.

There are eight Punjab Assembly constituencies whose results were expected to be withheld by the ECP due to cases pending before courts.

ECP to notify successful candidates from general seats today

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will notify newly-elected members of the national and provincial assemblies later today.

Successful candidates had earlier submitted the Return of Election Expenses to the electoral body through Form C.

ECP has received details of expense incurred on election campaign from 269 candidates of the National Assembly, 295 Punjab Assembly candidates, 129 from Sindh Assembly, 97 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and 49 from Balochistan.

After ECP determines the strength of all political parties in the national and provincial assemblies today, it will then issue notifications to successful candidates from reserved seats.

However, notifications of candidates in constituencies that have been challenged in courts will be withheld.

Assembly sessions will be called after the electoral body will have notified all successful candidates.

Candidates, after taking oath in the National Assembly, will elect the speaker of the House along with the prime minister.

Pakistan voted on Wednesday, July 25, 2018, for the country’s second consecutive democratic transfer of power. Voters from 85,307 constituencies of the national and provincial assemblies cast ballots in favour of the 11,855 contesting candidates.

With 116 seats, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) emerged as the winner in the National Assembly. The party also bagged the most votes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa — where it ruled for the past five years.

In Punjab, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz emerged as the single-largest party in the provincial assembly with 129 seats, while the PTI has a tally of 123. The Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid-e-Azam has eight MPAs after the joining of an independent member, while the PPP has six. There are 28 independents in all.

Protocol may not be needed but he def needs security. Not only does he have a guy and his daughter in Adiala that want him dead, not only does the Sindh mafia want him dead along with the maulvis but he also has to contend with enemies outside. May Allah keep him safe.

She was ranting on and on about lotays till Vawda hilariously mentioned ''but you also joined PMLN from a forward bloc in PPP'' and she completely lost it to the point where Abassi had to step in and tell her mind your language.

She has been yelling on a host of TV channels non-stop for the past week, it was hilarious how triggered she was after Faisal Vawda's little jibe :))) It's a nightmare when she's on any show as she keeps interrupting and yelling, the whole thing usually becomes a joke.

I know right :)) In another show Fawad Ch. acted as if she's not even speaking and she got enraged when he said ''Noon league don't have anyone else left to send on TV so they send her'' :))

hahaha i saw the clips she lost her mind and vawda was smiling. i remember she was in PPP and even took oath on Holy Quran for not leaving the party only to leave later and join PMLN later. Check her Aidyala video from 2 days ago and look at the arrogance when jail staff didn't let her meet Mian sahab.

ECP withholds notification of Imran's success in two constituencies

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) withheld on Tuesday the notification of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairperson Imran Khan's success in two constituencies.

The notifications of Imran's success in NA-53 (Islamabad) and NA-131 (Lahore) have been withheld, the ECP confirmed.

Imran, who is expected to become the next prime minister, had made history by emerging victorious on five National Assembly seats in the General Election 2018.

From NA-53 (Islamabad), Imran had defeated former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. The PTI chief had received 92,891 votes while the PML-N leader managed to get 44,314 votes.

However, the notification of Imran's success has been withheld as a case pertaining to violation to ECP's code of conduct is being heard against him.

On July 25, ECP had taken notice of Imran Khan casting his vote in front of media personnel, which was in direct violation of the electoral body's code of conduct.

The toughest competition to Imran came from Lahore constituency NA-131 where he was up against PML-N leader Khawaja Saad Rafique.

The notification for NA-131 (Lahore) success was withheld as Lahore High Court has reserved its verdict on former railways minister's plea for recounting of votes in the constituency.

In other three constituencies— NA-35 (Bannu), NA-243 (Karachi) and NA-95 (Mianwali)— notifications of Imran's success have been issued but shall be subject to the final decision of the Election Commission in the pending case of violation of the code of conduct.

From NA-35 (Bannu), MMA candidate Akram Durrani came second with 22,514 votes, while Imran had won with 24,317 votes.

From NA-243 (Karachi), Imran had defeated his opponent from MQM-P Ali Raza Abidi with a heavy margin, where the former got 91,358 votes, while the latter only managed to receive 24,082 votes.

From his home constituency in Mianwali, NA-95, Imran had defeated PML-N candidate Obaidullah Shadikhel. The PTI candidate won with 162,499 votes, while his opponent bagged merely 49,505 votes.

Earlier in the day, ECP had issued notifications to newly-elected members of the national and provincial assemblies, according to a statement by the electoral body.

After a summary of issuing notifications to successful candidates was approved by the chief election commissioner, the documents were uploaded on the electoral body's website.

However, notifications of candidates belonging to constituencies whose results have been challenged in courts were withheld. The withheld notifications, 30 in total, will be issued after the verdicts of the cases are announced.

Read somewhere on Twitter that Zardari has been trying to reach out to IK and has sent a message through his intermediaries that the PPP will fully support the PTI in the National Assembly against the PML-N and is prepared to bring back all the laundered money back to Pakistan in exchange for dropping the NAB and JIT cases against AZ and Faryal Talpur.

Hope IK lives up to his pre-electoral promises off "Main in logon ko choroon ga Nahin"

Wouldn’t be bad if we can get the laundered money back but then we need to punish these people too to curb the corruption.

Said Above I do believe what you wrote is true.

Wouldn't be that bad a deal if IK can make Zardari & Co. sign plea bargain for their crimes.

Communication actually happened (not sure about the money part) and there is a reason PPP is now going on backfoot and not coming forward to be part of opposition dherna tomorrow.

The money should be brought back but Zardari and co. need to pay for there actions. Maybe a reduced sentence? Also, needs to be banned from politics for life.
