The tournament which kicked off in Karachi on the 17th of September is the 11th edition of Pakistan's domestic T20 competition. One would think that spectators and local cricket enthusiasts would be delighted to watch a good game of cricket on their home grounds. Unfortunately, that has not been the case.

Most games have been played in front of nearly empty stadiums primarily due to the mismanagement of the organizers. Regrettably, a lot of potential is being wasted because of the dire execution of this tournament. What makes it even worse is that the tournament has most of the stars of the current Pakistan cricket team playing (apart from Lahore Lions of course) along with music and tons of sponsors yet still the marketing of the tournament leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

The apparent lack of promotion is there for everyone to see however, what's even worse is the fact that PTV prefers to show CLT20 matches over these domestic games whenever there is a conflict of schedules. Not to mention the fact that Geo Super is not airing this tournament at all.

What's alarming is the fact that PTV had been running promos for the CLT20 matches days before the cup began yet PCB failed to do anything about this.

Moreover, people who had gone to the stadium to watch these games complained of poor arrangements for the viewers.

The state of affairs is just sad. If PCB wants to launch a rival to the IPL they really need to step up a notch or two. Learn how tournaments like BigBash, CPL or CLT20 are marketed.

It seems as though the PCB's own interest in this tournament is waning. A decade ago, PCB had solitary sponsor for its Regional T20 Tournament, ABN AMRO was the sole sponsor of all the teams at that time & yet there used to be full packed stadiums (mostly) in KHI & LHR. (They may have attracted larger crowds, if it was held in smaller cities). Now each team has its own sponsors besides the large Banking groups & Telecos funding the event, yet they've failed to attract people to grounds.

What lesson has the PCB learnt in all all these years?

The biggest reason for lack of attendence was -

A.) Tournament was moved to Karachi suddenly due to flooding.
B.) Lack of advertising
C.) PTV bought rights to both CLT20 and this tournament, but I only saw ads for CLT20, they should have let Geo Super take the rights, they would've done a far better job.

PCB will never learn... And i believe they organise these T20 tournaments just to select another new squad for an away series....This T20 tournament happened without any prior notice simply just like that...

Blessing in disguise.

Far too much nonsense 20-20. It will only make cricket a 1 sided baseball style game (maybe it's already too late).

The worst thing is the new generations seem to love this slog and hope over the other formats.

I think they need to invite people like Charu Sharma as a consultant and plan next year's competition in advance. He was instrumental in the success of Pro Kabaddi League which was exciting, well marketed and provided excellent entertainment.

Check this link out - http://www.business-standard.com/article/beyond-business/mass-contact-114091901227_1.html. In its first week, this league apparently got 3x times more ratings than FIFA world cup on Indian TV.

But hey, for this to happen, you need to recognize that experts in this area live across the border - fat chance I think!

Three years later and we have the same issue with the National T20 Cup.

It's come to the extent that players are giving interviews during matches and almost always they are imploring for fans to come and support the teams. But how will they come if they don't even know about the tournament!?

The marketing has been pretty much non-existent. The only saving grace is that it's being broadcast on TV though looking at the quality, I'm not sure if that's a positive thing.

It's actually sad because there has been some good cricket in the tournament and some very close matches and nail-biting finishes.

Looking at the videos that you post I find it hard following just one delivery because of the video quality. It's an instant turnoff which is pretty shameful. Not sure how others are able to sit through it.

I honestly feel that PTV Sports have too much content and that is why they can’t manage the promotional aspect of their content. Geo Super, I believe, does a far better job at promoting the events that they broadcast and therefore we see a better crowd turnout in their broadcasting events. The real main difference between PTV Sports and Geo Super is that PTV doesn’t have proper timings for their talk shows and Geo Super does. People who watch and follow Geo Super know when to turn on their TV for quality content. PTV viewers don’t get to do that. PTV Sports viewers might get some football on the prime time or they might get to see some talk shows which is honestly a lottery and it’s pathetic.

The PCB don't take it seriously so no surprise there

A good product sells by itself. The PCB can spell billions on advertising but will still not be able to fill the seats given the current state of domestic cricket.

No one in our public cares about domestic cricket/local tournaments.

But they are willing to pay 1000s of rupees for a PSL match, as was the case when Internationals happened in Pakistan.

Its just when a foreign team comes to Pak, it automatically becomes an 'event' to savor. And people go to watch and these same players playing here.

Most of our people have third world mentality, we always go on trends and follow when masses are going for it.

Our people will never pay ticket money or even free entry to watch our own people play in a cricket match. Make what you want on this.

Draft based tournaments are never going to build loyal fan base because there is no local association & the squad changes almost entirely every year. Even in PLs & SLs, after one season, core squad remains intact - that's actually another fun, because fans also wait for the draft to see whom their club is bringing, it's like transfer market in soccer.

Quality of this years tournament is really good, without foreign players this is probably as good as any country can put (before BPL invaded). What is needed is a fixed calendar, and fixed teams - 8 or 16 (2 divisions), preferably in double league so that losing fans also can expect a "revenge" in return match & least 4 venues - ideally every team should have home venue, but that's extremely expensive just from air travel & accommodation point.

Pathetic model. Plain and simple.

All matches are happening on one ground. Which in itself is pathetic.

PCB doesn't want to spend the money and properly organize the tournament and neither does it want to market it.

If the PCB could associate proper players with the proper regions (or a part of the team and the rest have a draft system), and play all over the country with good coverage. I honestly think this tournament could be semi-successful.

The tournament was announced 2 days before it was supposed to begin.I also agree with MMHS regarding lack of fan loyalty due to draft system.
