Premier League 2019/20 | Discussion Thread

No mate was watching the game live, what a heart breaking loss; I wouldn't have accepted a draw with so little time left to play out and to concede a late winner was such a horrible feeling, I have been mostly watching highlights this season but tuned into this bell to bell, credit to Liverpool for staying their till the end and pushing on despite Villa being ahead. Would have done our confidence a world of good, anyway would still be happy to avoid the bottom 3 this season and take it from there, I think from here on Liverpool will remain unbeaten, we couldn't do it no one else will :yk3

Villa park is a difficult place for visting teams, still one of the best grounds in the world. Villa played very well, plenty of energy and discipline but got tired in the second half. I think Villa defo deserved a point at least but keep playing like this and you will easily finish outside of the bottom 3.

Liverpool have a long way to go up against City who we face next Sunday. If we win then I will feel we got this.

Another late show by Liverpool gaining another vital three points. Mane to the rescue after Robbo equalised with 3 mins to spare. Don't know why Firmino's perfect goal was ruled out for offside when at best he was level with their defender. Man City also got a late goal winning them three points...Arsenal as usual concede a goal throwing away two points where as Man Utd have made it their job to provide us with plenty of laughs this season:)):)):)) Today was Bournemouth's turn to humiliate them:sarf2

Crystal Palace 0-2 Leicester

All over and Leicester are up to third in the Premier League after another impressive performance.

That looked a horrible injury for Everton's Andre Gomes.

Hope he's ok, but the signs looked bad.

Everton midfielder Andre Gomes suffered a serious ankle injury which left Tottenham's Son Heung-min in tears and overshadowed the home side scoring a 97th-minute equaliser to earn a vital point.

Gomes, 26, was tackled from behind by Son and appeared to be injured by an awkward fall which prompted an anguished reaction from players and fans close to the incident.

Son was sent off by referee Martin Atkinson as Portugal international Gomes received extensive treatment in a lengthy delay and was eventually taken off on a stretcher.

Former Everton winger Pat Nevin, who was the analyst for BBC Radio 5 Live at Goodison Park on Sunday, described the incident as "horrible".

"Players looked devastated and there was utter confusion - players with their heads in their hands," the former Scotland international said.

"Son was distraught before he was sent off, and Serge Aurier couldn't watch and was praying.

"Gomes was led straight to the corner to the ambulance to take him to hospital."

The atmosphere around Goodison Park darkened as the football became secondary to Gomes' plight, until the mood was lifted by substitute Cenk Tosun heading in from close range.

Earlier, Spurs midfielder Dele Alli's clinical finish had livened up a dull game where the video assistant referee again proved a controversial talking point when Everton were denied what looked like a penalty.

Spurs, without a league win on the road since January, seemed set to take all three points when Alli punished a loose pass from Everton's Alex Iwobi to fire in.

Moments later, Alli looked to have handled in the Everton box but, after a three-minute delay peppered with boos from supporters, a penalty was not given by VAR.

Everton eventually equalised deep into the 12 minutes of stoppage time following Gomes' injury, with the draw moving Marco Silva's side three points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs were set to move eighth with a rare away win, but instead are 11th in the middle of a pack of 13 teams separated by just six points.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino sent his "best wishes" to Gomes, adding "the most important thing is he recovers quickly".

Son initially looked set to be given a yellow card for the challenge before referee Atkinson changed his mind and reduced Spurs to 10 men for the rest of the match.

Pochettino said it was "not important" whether Son should have been sent off or not, although added he did think his player was given a red card because of the "consequence" of the challenge.

"It was a normal action with the bad luck that Andre was injured," he told BBC Sport.

More VAR confusion leaves everyone baffled
For the first hour of the match, there was very little to talk about as both teams illustrated why they are struggling in the bottom half despite each holding much loftier ambitions.

So it was once again left to the farcical nature of VAR to give fans leaving Goodison Park something to complain about.

Shortly after Alli put Tottenham ahead, the Spurs midfielder looked to have handled in his own box when jumping to challenge Yerry Mina at an Everton corner.

Initially it looked innocuous - and certainly accidental - but replays suggested a penalty would be given as, judging by the letter of the law, his arm was raised above his head.

Loud boos were heard from the Goodison crowd as VAR watched 26 replays in a wait lasting almost three minutes.

Eventually it was decided that the original 'no penalty' decision should stand, leaving the players, managers, supporters at the ground and television viewers alike confused.

Earlier, Son had felt he was fouled by Mina in the Everton box during the first half, leading to another long delay until the system eventually came to the same conclusion of 'no penalty'.

Everton manager Marco Silva said he was "100% sure what happened" in both incidents after needing only a quick look at the same replays seen by VAR.

"I don't know why they needed two or three minutes and then decided what they decided," the Portuguese boss said.

"It is tough for me but tough for the referee as well."

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino added he "did not know what is going on".

"It is supposed to be helping the referee but it is creating more confusion," added the Argentine.

Deficiencies of Everton and Spurs still clear
Although the game was ultimately overshadowed, the deficiencies in two teams expecting to be challenging for Champions League qualification - and leaving both managers under differing degrees of pressure - were not masked.

Everton manager Silva badly needed a victory with his side sitting one place above the relegation zone and having earned just three points from their previous six league matches.

That is despite the Toffees spending almost £120m this summer in a bid to close the gap on the Premier League's 'top six'.

Both sides played with a lethargy in a first half which saw neither team pressing quickly, leading to a dearth of attacking pressure and just one shot on target - when Everton forward Richarlison turned and shot weakly at Spurs keeper Paulo Gazzaniga - between them.

Everton improved with their numerical advantage and left Silva claiming his team could have won.

"We showed a fantastic spirit. Even after that tough moment we had to keep focus and get a result. We deserved more than just a draw," he said.

"The first half was tough, we had problems to press a little more and even though they didn't create anything we didn't create either.

"In the second half we made some steps forward and started to press a little more. In my opinion we controlled the game until they scored through our mistake.

"Of course we reacted and after that tough moment we showed a reaction and could have won 2-1."

Everton's late equaliser means Tottenham, who were without striker Harry Kane through illness, have won just twice in their past 10 matches in all competitions.

"We were playing well but it's difficult to assess the last 10 minutes," Pochettino said.

"Talking only about football, it was a very difficult game. We were good but the game changed after the incident."

Andre Gomes: Everton midfielder released from hospital after ankle surgery

Everton midfielder Andre Gomes has been released from hospital after surgery to repair a fracture dislocation to his right ankle.

Gomes, 26, suffered the injury during Sunday's 1-1 Premier League draw with Tottenham at Goodison Park.

The Portugal international will now continue his rehabilitation under the guidance of Everton's medical team.

A club statement on Monday said that surgery "went extremely well" and Gomes is "expected to make a full recovery".

The incident, which involved Tottenham forward Son Heung-min, initially looked innocuous, but the mood immediately changed among the players and crowd as the full extent of the injury became apparent.

Son, who was clearly distressed after seeing the severity of Gomes' injury, was sent off by referee Martin Atkinson for the challenge.

Turkey forward Cenk Tosun scored a 97th-minute equaliser to earn a point for Everton after Dele Alli's second-half opener.

Everton midfielder Andre Gomes could play again this season, says manager Marco Silva.

The 26-year-old Portugal international had surgery to repair a fracture dislocation suffered in Sunday's 1-1 Premier League draw with Tottenham.

Gomes was hurt after a challenge by Spurs forward Son Heung-min which sent him hurtling into Serge Aurier.

"Everything went really well and we hope we can see him playing again this season," Silva said.

"It's not easy for us to give an exact date of when he will return but in our mind, and the feedback from our medical staff, is that it is possible.

"We all saw that moment and it looked like a really serious injury. Obviously, it is not something we can be 100% sure on but there are lots of positives."

Son, who was sent off following the challenge, did not celebrate his first of two goals for Tottenham against Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League on Wednesday, instead clasping his hands and bowing his head.

The Football Association confirmed on Tuesday that Son's red card had been overturned.

When asked if Gomes had spoken to Son, Silva said: "Of course that was a tougher moment for Andre, for sure, than all the others on the pitch.

"The toughest moment was for Andre, but of course for the two players who were involved, first Son and after, Aurier, it was really tough as well.

"But now is a moment for us to understand the situation and most importantly, to give Andre all the support he needs at this moment.

"If you want to look at that moment, it was a strong tackle. I was the first one after the match to say for sure that Son didn't have bad intentions, but after it's for the referee to decide."

Why is it dirty money?

They launder money bypassing the FFP and other regulations - some of the tricks are showing oversold tickets (and they pay sales tax for the fake ticket!!!!), sponsoring MCity by other concerns of Mansoor and overpaying for it (Imagine that plastic club has highest amount of shirt deal and stadium naming deal - a stadium that never fills more than 80%). Mansoor & his family is always seen inferior to Makhdoom (Dubai's royalty) and they are using MCity as their mascot, pouring money into it laundering from UAE, for which they don't pay tax.

Transfer ban and still above City :srini

Lampard & SG will become the best two English Managers and I can see Frank in charge of Chelsea for 25+ years; he'll win EPL with them as well. SG's chance is a bit lower because Klopp is just 53, might stay at Anfield for another 10-12 years, but one day SG will manage LFC as well.

Seems more like bending the rules and using tricks to transfer cash as you say but the actual money doesn't appear to have been made illegally in the true sense of "money laundering."

Man City 2 Chelsea 1 at half-time.

Both defences all over the place.

Liverpool doing it again with a late winner this time coming from Bobby Firmino. We were again a little bit lucky when the ruled out what would have been a CP equaliser, having seen it a few times he did push our lad to the ground. To see the points shared by Chelsea and Man City would have been ideal for Liverpool but it wasn't to be. Despite getting the opener it was perhaps a fair result not that I am upset or anything to see Chelsea drop points.

Jose will now know what needs to be done at Spurs for them to win anything this season, having already been eliminated from the League Cup their best hope is the FA Cup.

Arsenal as usual dropped points against at best an average side in Southampton. Seems as if Unai Emery will soon be joining Mauricio Pochettino unless he turns things around fast, very fast. I will give him until Christmas as best to save his job coz their fans have had enough of him now. Just imagine if Pochettino becomes the next Arsenal gaffer!!:yk2

Everton manager Marco Silva is fighting to save his job after Saturday's 2-0 home defeat by Norwich City.

The loss increased concerns behind the scenes at Goodison Park and it is understood major shareholder Farhad Moshiri held talks with fellow directors, including chairman Bill Kenwright and director of football Marcel Brands, after the game to discuss the growing crisis.

The 42-year-old Portuguese, who has been Everton manager since June 2018, also met with Moshiri and Brands.

Moshiri and Brands are both keen to maintain stability and support Silva, despite a furious reaction from Everton supporters towards the end of the loss, with many joining in chants of "you're getting sacked in the morning" from the travelling contingent.

It remains to be seen, however, whether their patience and support extends to Silva being in charge for next weekend's visit to second-placed Leicester City, which is then followed by a visit to Premier League leaders Liverpool in the Merseyside derby at Anfield.

Former Everton manager David Moyes and Mark Hughes have been mentioned inside the club as potential interim solutions - but Moshiri and Brands' preferred option has always been to give Silva time.

The toxic atmosphere inside Goodison Park on Saturday, with Everton fans turning on the manager, has now placed huge pressure on Silva, Moshiri and Brands.

Everton lie in 15th place despite heavy investment from Moshiri and have now lost to all three newly-promoted clubs, including home defeats by Sheffield United and Norwich City.

Everton face a tricky run over the next few weeks, with matches against Leicester in the league and Carabao Cup quarter-finals, plus league games against Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and Manchester City.

"It is not the moment to talk about individual positions," Silva, 42, said after the game. "We have to look what is best for us as a club and for myself and the players as well - but always the club has to be at the top.

"If you are really disappointed with the afternoon I can imagine they [fans] are as well and they have the reaction to the manager and the players.

"When you lose a match, the first person they look to is the manager. Football is like that.

"The message is I respect what is their feeling, for sure. It is not the first time they felt the way they felt this afternoon."

Asked if he would be speaking to Moshiri, the Portuguese added: "It is possible. Normally we do that. I cannot say to you 100% sure but [it is] normally something we do."

Silva replaced Sam Allardyce at Goodison Park in May 2018 and has won 25 and lost 22 of his 58 games in charge.

The former Hull City and Watford manager was brought in with the hope of his side playing more attractive football and was backed with almost £90m of new signings in the summer of 2018.

The Toffees finished eighth last season in Silva's first campaign but, after spending more than £100m on new players in the summer, they have won just four league games this season.

Good win for Aston Villa 2-0 over a lacklustre Newcastle.

Some how, managed three points again, but I guess our luck is at last life - Klopp might have to spend in January. Can’t recall when last time we kept a clean sheet, but somehow boys are scoring one more. They say, 1-0s are the symbol of title winners - hope, for us 2-1 works.

It’s actually a great weekend for Liverpool after MCity’s draw & Chelsea’s surprise home loss, but I believe Leicester will beat Everton. Spurs again has conceded two from 3-0 up, but Mou is getting results there. MCity couldn’t hang on 10 minutes, despite being damn lucky with Fernandinho’s tactical shirt pulling - may be another half billion, will help Pep to fix his back line.

Liverpool are far hungrier this season. They are put to prove a point after the bottle-job last season, when they surrender a 10 point lead in the space of 3-4 months.

Pep and City don’t look too bothered about the Premier League this season. It seems that they are putting all their eggs in the Champions League basket.

City needs to conquer Europe to establish itself as a true powerhouse and winning another league at this point won’t do much for them.

If Pep doesn’t win the Champions League this season he will be under pressure for the first time in his managerial career.

These 2-1 wins are not good for the blood pressure.

40 points and it's not even December!

A big month coming up. If we can win all our PL fixtures, one foot nearer. :klopp

Good day for Liverpool winning another close one. I thought it would be a tough one today nonetheless all that matters is three points. With Man City drawing and Chelsea losing this is the best chance we'll ever have of finally winning the title. Allison was rightly sent off, Adrian needed to make some smart saves later on. Newcastle always give Man City a tough game taking crucial points of them like yesterday. My concern is losing Fabinho whose such a crucial holding player for us now for such a crucial period when we are in so many competitions. JK is gonna have to juggle his team very smarty now making full use of the squad. Shaqiri, Lallana, Kieta and Origi will have to stand up and be counted. As it is Leicester are the closest challengers to us for the title.

Watford have sacked manager Quique Sanchez Flores after Saturday's 2-1 loss to Southampton, saying "ultimately results have dictated our decision".

Chris Hughton is a possible successor and the Hornets said a replacement will be appointed "imminently".

Sanchez Flores, who was in charge for the 2015-16 season, was reappointed on 7 September, replacing Javi Gracia.

But he won just one of his 10 league games in charge with Watford bottom of the Premier League.

In an open letter to Watford fans published on the club website, the 54-year-old Spaniard said the club "will always be in my heart".

Watford have eight points after 14 games and are six points from safety - their worst return at this stage of a Premier League campaign.

"Quique is a man of great integrity and it was clear how much he wanted to have a positive impact, but ultimately results have dictated our decision," said chairman Scott Duxbury.

"The appointment of a new head coach is imminent, and with nearly two-thirds of the season remaining, we will provide all the support necessary to make the coming months successful."

During Sanchez Flores' latest spell in charge, they have only beaten Norwich in the league, while losing to Wolves, Chelsea, Burnley and Manchester City, where they were hammered 8-0. They were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Everton in the fourth round.

Since Gianfranco Zola's exit in December 2013, Watford have had nine managers, including Sanchez Flores twice.

Fellow Spaniard Gracia had been in charge for 21 months - making him the first Hornets boss to last more than one full season since Zola.

Sanchez Flores becomes the the third Premier League boss to be sacked in the past two weeks, following Unai Emery at Arsenal on Friday and Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham on 19 November.

Watford are in their fifth season back in the Premier League since promotion in May 2015.

Gracia had led the club to the FA Cup final last season where they lost 6-0 to Manchester City, as well as 11th place in the Premier League.

They also reached the FA Cup semi-final in 2016 during Sanchez Flores' first spell as manager.

Analysis - 'Watford can't get next appointment wrong'
BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty

Watford gambled by bringing back Sanchez Flores as manager in September - but have reacted with typical speed after realising the decision has failed.

For all the perceived managerial instability, Watford have a stable set-up behind the scenes overseen by the Pozzo family and chief executive Scott Duxbury. They realise that Premier League status is everything to a club that has worked so hard to achieve it.

This is why Gracia was sacked after losing three of his first four games this season and why Sanchez Flores has followed him after less than 90 days.

Watford are rarely caught without a plan when it comes to managerial succession. Sanchez Flores' appointment was announced 30 minutes after the departure of Gracia.

This will be arguably the most important decision the club's hierarchy will make.

Watford will appoint their third manager this season before the turn of the year and they know, with the Hornets bottom of the table with only eight points from 14 games, that if they get it wrong they may well be sealing their return to the Championship.
