Wapda open title defence in revamped Quaid Trophy

KARACHI: Holders Wapda will launch of their title defence in a revamped Quaid-i-Azam Trophy National Cricket Championship from Tuesday when Lahore Blues host them at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

Wapda clinched their maiden first-class trophy after the day-night final against Habib Bank petered out in a draw at Karachi’s National Stadium last December. The highlight of that game was skipper Salman Butt’s century in each innings.

The latest edition of country’s premier first-class competition comes with a lot of alterations. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)’s domestic committee has put teams in quandary over the schedule that will be a trial of stamina for the 16 competing sides as they head toward seven four-day fixtures in the space of only 41 days compared to the past two season when teams had 15-18 rest days in contrast to 13 now.

Further, just 86 days have allocated for the entire championship during which 69 matches will be played at 15 venues. Another big change is that a break of 20 days will enforced before the Super Eight stage and the five-day final since the PCB were forced to delay holding of the National T20 Cup, which was moved from the original dates of Aug 25-Sept 10 to accommodate the three-match T20 series between Pakistan and World XI that was played in Lahore earlier this month.

Originally, the first-class event was planned for an Oct 8 start but the World XI visit and revised dates for the National T20, which is now set to be played in the middle of November.

With no policy as yet decided by the PCB hierarchy to prevent top players going to fill up their pockets from cash earned from the lucrative T20 leagues — such as the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) and the first-ever Global T20 in South Africa — the Quaid Trophy will again see the star status missing.

The dates of both BPL (Nov 2-Dec 10) and Global T20 (starting from Nov 3 with the final on Dec 16) will almost run concurrently with the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy and the National T20 Cup.

The PCB, in a major decision, chose to adopt a draft selection policy for the eight regional outfits for the upcoming tournament with each region being allocated eight players through this controversial process.

Another key element missing time is that there will be no day-night matches scheduled, according to the fixture list provided to the media.

Complete scorecards links now available in OP. Some interesting stuff.

Good to see Umair Masood hitting a fifty for Rawalpindi. Also, it looks like Shaheen Shah Afridi is playing for KRL. Returns of 1/45 for him today. Saif Badar also in KRL's playing XI.

Captain Shezzy batting at 3 for HBL. They have four openers batting in the top 4 - Imam, Fakhar, Shezzy and Farhat.

Saud Shakeel in PTV's lineup. Batting on 11* against Lahore Whites.

Shadab batting at 7 for SNGPL, only made 9. However, got a wicket in the two overs he bowled. Sahibzada Farhan on 33* for Peshawar, hope he makes a big score. He also bowled five overs so might be a handy part-timer; I didn't know he bowls.

Irfan Jr. and Zia-ul-Haq playing for SSGC. Yamin batting at eight.

Ghulam Mudassar playing for NBP. 13-4-25-0 for him today.

Sohail Khan ran right through the Karachi Whites top-order, got the first five wickets to reduce them to 38/5.

Good to see Raza Hassan is playing as well, first innings of a game and has 3-87 bowling 28 overs.

Umar Akmal also playing, made 47 and got out.

Sadaf Hussain, 3-48

Junaid Khan so far 3 overs 1-22.

Shezzy made 73.

I remember reading a few months back the PCB planned on using a duke ball for this seasons FC games, is this still the case?

Seems like Umar Siddiq has given up gloves.
A shame as he is the 2nd best wicket keeper batsman in Pakistan after Sarfraz.

MMHS umair masood did well today,,,,,and of course raza hssan is back with good figures...

Masood is a classical batsman, might not fit in LOs, but great prospect for Test. Raza Hasan is the best SLAO spinner in PAK & he can bat a bit as well.

SSGC is a team to beat in this tournament with that batting line up.

Good to see that Sahibzada Farhan can ball too. Does anyone know what he bowls? Like off spin? Leg spin?

You have provided an excellent summary. A couple of other batting performances from players worth keeping an eye on:

Openers: Zain Abbas (44) and Imam Ul Haq (41) have made decent starts to their season.

Middle order: Asif Zakir (89) continues to score runs at domestic level. Asif Ali (the one who plays for IU in PSL), scored his first FC century yesterday, having not played FC cricket since 2014.

Wicket-keeper: Good day for keepers by the looks of it. As well as Masood, Mohammad Hasan (the centrally contracted keeper) impressed yet again with a gritty 67. As you have already mentioned, Karachi Whites were 38/5 when he came in and it was largely down to his efforts they got to 208. I am sure this will please Syed1.

From a batting front, tomorrow should be good with Badar, Shakeel, Farhan, Yamin, and Ahsan Ali all in action.

Will look at the bowling performances properly tomorrow, but looks like Waqas Ahmed is enjoying himself (fast bowler for Lahore Whites), having taken 2-14 from six overs.

so far so good for shahin shah.junaid khan.fahim ashraf,and shadab,in abtting imam.saud shakil.fakhar ,rizwan, and sahibzada ..

amir yamin with 27 not out .he should be batting above saifullah bangsah,,,batting too low,,,,umar amin is going well today....

Good to see Hammad moving from Pindi. Pindi pitch always favor bowlers and has low scoring matches. Atleast the ones I follow.

he has a remote chance to make the team as a batsman who can be a part time option for our test team in awway tours,he had good FC season last year...

karachi pitches are good for batting.i think maximum isal matches should be held there and haidr ABAD>>

yes but that was inflated by some not outs

He needs to really kick on right now, because I still feel ability wise he is way ahead of Ashraf and Yamin, in batting at least

Fakhar zaman :hundred
Thats my boy.... hundred with a strike rate of more than hundred.

Hammad for me is in top bracket when it comes to finishers in Pakistan.
But unfortunately he is not a good bowler. Bowls in 115-120 kph range which is just not good. His bowling stats are inflated by taking wickets in Pindi stadium.

Can anyone please tell why Misbah and Younis are not playing in Quaid-E-Azam trophy?

Have they retired from domestic tournaments too?

yes no doubt his bowling is probably the worst out of the lot, I reckon that back injury was too much for him, though I wonder how he would go with some coaching from Azhar or Waqar which would let him at least do a job.

His batting will be the main draw though, if he finally manages to have high scoring season I think Mickey and co would be excited by him batting at 6 in tests and being to bowl a few overs if neededd

Abdullah719 Please amend the title as it currently reads "Sep 26-29, 2016" rather than "Sep 26-29, 2017"

I think they have retired from FC cricket as well. Will only play leagues I would assume? Younis doesn't play those either.

I hope Sahibzada Farhan bowls offspin

The players I most keen to watch this season are

1. Hussain Talat
2. Shaheen Shah Afridi
3. Sahibzada Farhan
4. Hammad Azam

I think all can potentially fill defences in our teams

MMHS would like ur views about shahin shah....

Unbelievable debut indeed. Having said that, it's against a regional team & I have lots of reservation on that wicket - for a bowler of his height, if the wicket is something like I can imagine, it might be just a matter of putting the ball at spot from 3 metres height against these semi decent domestic batsmen.

Still, it tells that there is great potential to work on. Hopefully, he does that (focus on building career) in FC cricket rather than T20s.

By way of follow up, some excellent performances from most of the players I mentioned yesterday. It’s particularly pleasing to see so many openers performing, for obvious reasons.

Batsmen:

1. Sahibzada Farhan- 50 (53): Good innings given his side could only post 203 with only one other batsmen scoring 50. However, one thing that Farhan needs to work on is his conversation rate. In 13 FC innings he has scored 6 50s which is mightily impressive. But he has yet to score a FC century and too often gets out after reaching the personal milestone. This could be due to fitness/concentration issues but this is something I will be keeping an eye on. Also, he has shown he can bat at an excellent s/r in all formats, but it will be good to see if he can also grind out an innings when required.

2. Ahsan Ali- 41 (45): good start but again didn’t build on this start. Ahsan has two FC double-centuries so he can certainly bat for long periods but too often throws away a good platform. He’s a beautiful stroke-maker and good at strike rotation but he needs to work on this aspect of his game. Will be interesting to see where his fitness is as he had put on weight last time I saw him but according to the “talent spotter” interview he was planning on working on this. His FC S/R is 80, which is very high especially as he is an opener so he shouldn’t be afraid to take a little more time to build his innings.

3. Imam Ul Haq- 55 (123): following on from his 41 in the first innings he scored a half century in the second innings. Great to see consistency from him, but he needs to work on S/R which is preventing him from pushing on.

4. Fakhar Zaman (111): Mickey has already mentioned the possibility of him playing tests if he tightens up his defence so I am sure he will take great confidence from this innings. That said FATA’s bowling is a little weak and I want to see how he performs against stronger bowling attacks.

5. Saud Shakeel- 62 (129): PTV were bowled out for 161 so a great innings from Shakeel. He’s a very special talent so it’s great to see him start the season well. He even picked up a wicket!

6. Saif Badar didn’t do much but the scorecard suggests the pitch is a batsman’s graveyard so I am not worried.

Bowlers:

Shaheen Shah Afridi- 8-39: excellent figures but a low scoring match so I won’t draw too much from this performance other than to say it confirms what we already knew (ie. that he has ability).

Waqas Ahmed- 5- 54: good to see him actually start the season in the playing XI, as he wasn’t given enough chances in previous seasons. He's 28 now so needs to make the most of this opportunity if he wants to progress to national team as time is not on his side.

Abdullah719 Has legspinner Irfan gone from being on the cusp of making his international debut to not even making the playing XI for FATA? Or has he moved teams?

I don't see him in FATA's squad here. http://www.pakpassion.net/ppforum/showthread.php?264393

Might have moved to a department. There's two Irfans in action here http://www.pcb.com.pk/quaideazam-trophy-201718/match/30485.html so he might be one of them. Irfan :irfan is playing for WAPDA and Irfan Jr. is playing for SSGC.

Yes, he has most likely moved.

Cricinfo's website is a complete mess. Their scorecards are linking :irfan to both PTV and to WAPDA. They are also saying a left arm spinner called Irfan is playing for both Lahore and SSGC (when in fact it is Irfan Jr. playing for SSGC).

As clear as mud- I despair!

:irfan is definitely at WAPDA.

The left-arm spinner used to previously play for SSGC IIRC. However, he usually bats in the middle order and the Irfan (Jr.) playing for SSGC is batting at 11 so that's not the left-arm spinner. I hope. :danish

He must have moved to Lahore Whites or PTV. Same goes for the leggie.

Now we just need to figure out which is which. :najam

I'll try and find out tomorrow iA.

FGS no more Irfans.

Haha- my thoughts exactly. Some detective work is needed.

Also, do you know who Talat is playing for? I can't seem to locate any info.

Umaid Asif has performed really well.... remember he was/is a poster here... but hasn't posted a lot

Good to see Salman Fayyaz playing, former pak under19s left arm spinning all-rounder

imam.this guy has some serious potential. MMHS...though the bowling looks so weak but he gets it with his concentration which is required.

If he is to make it, has to play a Test by next UAE series; otherwise in 2/3 years time he'll have enough time in domestics for batting flaws & brainfarts creep in his game. I won't debut any PAK batsman, once he has officially celebrated his 23rd birthday - has to be earlier, or never.

Prospect is great, and the guy is educated - one quality that actually helps in cricket, more than any other sports.

Hmm tried searching for the name but no luck... Is Mohammed Asif playing for anyone, or is he finally done?

2 great debuts (Raza Hasan is a 2nd coming) and couple of really good show by young players in 1st round. Still, I think wickets are too bowling friendly & lot more improvement is desired. Ideally a full FC day should produce scores like 343/10 ...

I actually have lost confidence on Arthur picking/nurturing spinners - it has to be Ul-Haq & Sarfraz, may be Mushi to force Raza Hasan against Aussies next October. May be even in ODI series of NZ - any given day, I'll pick a genuine spinner who can bat, than darter, who is great in T20. This guy actually will trouble even Indian batsmen on turners, because he gets turn & has lots of variations - needs to bowl long, long hours/day to bring discipline in his bowling. Still has enough time to break Kaneria's numbers in Test for a PAK spinner - he was that good.

Good to see Butt failing.
Hardly.

He scored 38 (104 balls) and 26 (55 balls) in a match on a very tricky wicket on which none of the four innings reached 300.

But he stayed in for long periods, which set up the middle order to score the runs.

He's too old to be selected, but these two innings were each worth 100 on a less difficult wicket.

You’re talking like Shehzad now.
