A bouncer from New South Wales quick Sean Abbott saw Victorian batsman Will Pucovski retire hurt in their Sheffield Shield clash at Junction Oval in Melbourne on Sunday.

Pucovski immediately went down requiring attention, leaving Abbott visibly distressed and no doubt bringing back memories from Phil Hughes' death.

The 20-year-old Victorian misjudged a short ball and was caught on the top of his helmet, crouching down before appearing to collapse as the fielding side came to his aid.

Abbott was the bowler that delivered the blow to Hughes that day in 2014 and was overcome with emotion in the aftermath of Sunday's incident.

Pucovski had to be helped from the ground after being treated for several minutes on the pitch.

The match was paused further as Abbott took a moment to compose himself before he was able to continue.

The Bushrangers were 2/64 in their second innings as they looked to build a winning lead after taking an 18-run advantage into second dig on day two.

Abbott had already claimed the wicket of Glenn Maxwell for 33.

Victoria captain Aaron Finch came to the crease following the incident with Pucovski later being subbed with concussion and replaced by Dan Christian.

The talented young batsman has already dealt with several head injuries in his fledgling career.

Back in November he was hit in the helmet while playing a Futures league match for Victoria, seeing him retire hurt with concussion.

Prior to that, he wore one on the lid in a JLT Cup match for the Bushrangers in October, that followed several other head knocks, most notably one on his Sheffield Shield debut.

Pucovski had six months out from any sporting activity after being knocked out while playing football in high school.

Fingers crossed this latest incident isn't too serious and the young star isn't kept out of action for too long.

Crazy, hope they are all alright.

How hard will it be for Sean Abbott, must be going through depression

Sounds like Pucovski will be okay. I feel for Sean Abbott, I can only imagine what he must have been feeling/thinking after the bouncer hit him considering what happened with Phil Hughes.

Ahh man not Sean Abbott. The must be mortified, he must be really questioning his career. Maybe he could work on his bouncers and reasses it.

Bloody hell that must be a terrifying thought for Abbott. Poor guy is just trying to do his job. Good to know that Pucovski will most likely be okay.

Sad to hear this.

Hopefully Sean is able to continue to bowling and just put this incident behind him. Neither this nor the Phil Hughes should ruin a promising and bright career ahead of him.

English commentator Simon Hughes is copping heavy criticism after his inappropriate remark for Sean Abbott during the BT Sports coverage of Friday’s T20 International between Australia and Pakistan.

Abbott was selected to represent Australia for the first time since 2014 after a stellar couple of seasons in the BBL — he was the second-highest wicket taker during BBL08.

However, Hughes decided to introduce Abbott to England viewers by referencing the Phillip Hughes tragedy, which rocked Australian cricket nearly five years ago.

“A rare opportunity for Sean Abbott to play, the man who is most famous probably for having the terrible misfortune of bowling the ball that killed Phillip Hughes in the middle,” Hughes said during the live coverage.

Abbott claimed career-best figures in his international return, removing the dangerous Imam-ul-Haq and middle-order batsman Imad Wasim.

The 27-year-old has taken 91 T20 wickets, at a healthy average of 22.90.

Anything to get Simon Hughes kicked off air. The guy loves the sound of his own voice and BTs coverage is pretty dire with him cutting in on the host broadcast all the time.

Sean Abbott expressed his understanding of the selectors' decision to exclude him from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 squad during an interaction with a sports media outlet:

"I didn't really take selection out of the selectors' hands."

"I didn't perform and bowl as well as I would have liked in my last five games for Australia over in the UK and back home here against Pakistan."

"My goal at all times when I play is to obviously contribute and do what I need to do for the team, but on top of that, it's [to] take the decision to drop you out of the selectors' hands, and I haven't done that. So that's fair. The guys who have been picked are in form and I think we've got a great squad to go over and compete for the Champions Trophy."

"It would have been nice to debut out here the other day [against India] on what was a bowler-friendly wicket," Abbott said while smiling. "Sri Lanka typically is more spin-friendly than anything, but I feel like conditions might suit me perhaps more than others. But, again, we've got such depth with our bowling at the moment."

"It gets mentioned a lot, but every time Scotty comes in and bowls, no matter the conditions, he does well. And then Starcy is obviously bowling high 140s, and then reverse swing will play a role, or being able to tie up an end so the spinners can attack, whatever that looks like. Being one of only three quicks going over, I suppose I feel a little bit closer. But I certainly feel like conditions might suit the way I go about my bowling."
