Shaheen Shah Afridi named vice-captain for Australia Test series

Perth, 13 December 2023:

Fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi has been appointed vice-captain of the Pakistan Test Team for the series against Australia.

Earlier, Shaheen was also appointed captain of the Pakistan Men's T20 Cricket Team.

Shaheen has played 27 Tests, 53 ODIs and 52 T20Is for Pakistan.

These appointments seem so ad-hoc!

Almost an after-thought

I don't think Shaheen is a good option for vice captain in Tests.

Saud Shakeel was a better choice as he is someone we can groom for the future.

Is shaheen still taking instructions from Babar?
Where is shan masood?

Respect often follows performance and if Shaheen doesn’t deliver it’ll be hard for him to earn respect of his team.
Vice captainship is a ceremonial title for most part anyway.

Pakistan needed to rest Shaheen for months but instead they are appointing him captaincy and vice captain. You can clearly see that he needs a break from the game. He was the greatest pace prospect since Amir but he is being ruined as we speak. Are the PCB brain dead? Can they not see the obvious? I don't even blame Shaheen's current failure fully on him, it's also the management who is desperate to play him at all costs and let him play in all the bozo leagues around the world. He's not the same player right now that he was when appointing him captain would have made sense. He's extremely regressed right now and has lost any skills that he had. PCB has been on a mission to destroy him ever since he got slightly better from his injury last year before the t20 world cup

SSA needs to get hit knee fitness back. Look at Bumrah he was gone for almost a year but came back when he was ready. SSA is young. He should take proper time off, work in strengthening his knees so he can get back to his pace of 140+ on a regular basis. 6 months to a year of proper rehab now can save him a lifetime of regret.

Shaheen should only be captain in t20.vice captain should be Saud Shakeel in tests.

Shaheen had a decent amount of rest for this Australian tour ie 3-4 weeks, he even sat out of the practice game before the first test.

Absolutely pathetic fitness and strength. He is a one trick pony ie full straight bowling looking for the inswinger which international players have no issues dealing with now.

I just dont get why people are mentioning Saud Shakeel’s name for vice captaincy. Leader needs to have a personality and ability to get the boys together. Saud Shakeel is a million miles away from that.

Shaheen Shah Afridi & Wasim Akram explain the art of swing bowling ball!

That much needed rest would only come if he becomes physically incapable to deliver a ball. After this series the prep starts for a t20 WC of which he is the captain.

Poor man management from PCB, you can also say Shaheen himself shouldn't have been playing in so many hit and giggle leagues

In my opinion, he should be completely rested from test and ODI cricket until the T20 WC.

Shan Masood's thoughts on Shaheen's recent performance in the ongoing Australian tour :

"It happens and happens to the best of player[Shaheen]. I think he bowled really well at a lot of spaces at Perth. Yes he was a bit expensive to start off things but he was always looking for the wickets and we didn't want him to change that way. I thought the way he bowled in Perth especially in the second innings and a lot of the first innings he had not gotten some luck his way. But you just give him that time and space and he just needs a one click to change things around for us. If he bowls well I hope we would be on the right track"

We aren't too far from the "resting" stage. What worries me is that he seems to panic quickly if the basics don't come off, for example his greatest asset is the angle but if he gets hit for a couple of 4s, he will immediately go around the wicket and bowl mostly rubbish.

Why not just rest him altogether and let him play just Franchise cricket.
He is under the influence of Shahid Afridi, who I believe is ruining his career. I'm sure Afridi is suggesting him to quit test cricket, as he did himself

I am not sure about ruining his career but obviously franchise cricket pays much more. The real issue is that after the injury he has lost his zip and the guy likes to lead from the front, but you can't do that when your legs have gone

First, he was removed as t20I captain of Pakistan after just 1 series and now again, Shaheen has been removed as the vice-captain of test team, replaced by Saud Shakeel.

But I think this is a good decision in the long term. Saud is the guy who can be groomed for future captaincy.
