What's new

South Africa (137/5) defeat India (133/9) to win the Group 2 clash by 5 wickets

Smiles on Indian faces. They are taking it to the last over so NRR won't be impacted and...

Game over, congratulations to SA. Indian bowling and defending total is just not possible on this planet :D

Good game overall. They made a match out of it. Congrats to SA and Ind for the semi final.

Pakistan would've choked this if they were in SA's position in the last over.

Indian side played pathetically and even though SA tried to choke, India didn't allow that.

Mark my words this Indian team is not winning this world cup.

Feel sad for alone1213.. hope he's not alone, hopefully somebody there to comfort him..

Ashwin,kl ,dk,bhuvi,- big match player combo that Ind can challenge anyone

3 dropped catches, 3 missed run-outs and giving 18th over to Ashwin who flighted the first two balls inexplicably. Despite this, India made a match out of this. Bowlers will take comfort. Arshdeep is a great find for India. Positives for India in this. Lots

No worry we can win our next match and qualify for semi .even one match rain out than still we will reach semifinal.

For the life of me i just don't understand why spinners are always a must in every side. India were doing well until Ashwin comes on to give the sixes away. I knew the RSA would smash him to all parts when he had the ball in his hand. Match ka mujrim Ravichandran Jadeja no doubt about it at all even though Kohli of all people dropped an easy catch. India would have had a much better chance of winning the match had they played five pacers.

Every team plays a spinner because of the over rates. You can't complete the game on time otherwise.

Today I felt the pain of being Indian fan having crap bowling unit, I was watching the match intensely when the ball was new but the moment staffers starts attacking I know for sure that Indian bowlers doesn't have enough pace to stop Saffers from winning it and exactly it happened as I thought so it will end , Indian fans must understand our pain of having crap batting unit as well.

With better fielding and bowling changes India could have made it much closer. But Miller was allowed to find his rhythm. India should have dismissed him before he got set.

They mainly targeted Ashwin and Pandya. India needed guys like Siraj, Bumrah on this pitch. They woudl have wreaked havoc.

The dropped catch by Kohli and the missed run-out by Rohit cost India the game, and the poor fielding wasted a brilliant innings by Suryakumar.

Well played, South Africa. They've got a seriously threatening pace attack.

All said and done no one can complain if RSA and India go through to the semi's as seems likely. They are the best two teams in the group.

India Performance Watch

Honestly,

Keeping our interest in the game in the hopes of qualifying aside, India were badly exposed today.

They are facing the same problems we are with their batting line up

Top players not performing (Rohit, Sky, Rahul) along with the likes of Hooda and DK

And Arshdeep aside, their bowling line up lacks pace / bounce.

India isn’t even the team to beat in this World Cup/Group.

For Group 2, it’s most definitely South Africa.

Had Pakistan had a bit of luck and finishing sense in the first 2 games, India wouldn’t even be in contention for qualifying.

This is not a hate post, but realistically their cracks were covered by that Kohli knock against us and a weak Netherlands team.

Aiden Markram and David Miller walked South Africa through a tricky run chase in Perth after Arshdeep Singh's early strikes put India back into the game.

A sizzling start with the ball for Proteas

India got off to a rocky start after opting to bat first with the South Africa quicks enjoying the pace and bounce in Perth. While Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul pummelled a six apiece early on, Ngidi sent back Rohit with a short ball that hurried up the Indian skipper and found the top edge off the pull.

Rahul fell soon after, edging Ngidi to the slip cordon in the same over to depart for nine. Virat Kohli got into groove with a fine drive followed by a flick, both racing away for boundaries, but he fell on the pull too, top edging Lungi Ngidi to Rabada in the deep.

The middle-order collapses too

Kohli, though, completed 1000 runs in the T20 World Cup, becoming the first after Mahela Jayawardene and the first Indian to the milestone. But the milestone was overshadowed by stop India's struggles against the searing pace of the South African quicks.

Deepak Hooda, who had come in for Axar Patel, fell to Anrich Nortje and India found themselves in a similar situation to that against Pakistan - at 42/4 in the 8th over. Hardik Pandya followed in the next over as they lost half the side with just 49 runs on the board.

Suryakumar does it again

Suryakumar Yadav led the recovery, establishing his authority over the bowlers in typical fashion. Even as the likes of Dinesh Karthik and Ravichandran Ashwin took time to settle down, Yadav continued at a frenetic pace, leading India's recovery and getting their total up to respectable levels.

He completed his ninth half-century of the year in this format to help India to 133/9 in 20 overs, falling only in the penultimate over of the innings after making a terrific 68 off just 40 balls.

Arshdeep gives India a rousing start

It was evident that this Perth wicket wasn't going to be easy for the batters and Arshdeep gave it back when he sent back Quinton de Kock and Rilee Rossouw, fresh off back-to-back T20I tons, in his first over.

There was no recovery early on for South Africa as Bavuma's struggles continued. At 24/3, South Africa needed a strong recovery and Aiden Markram provided that with a composed innings helped by a steady David Miller at the other end.

The recovery and a thrilling end

At the 10-over mark, South Africa had only gotten to 40, but importantly hadn't lost further wickets. Markram and Miller stepped up after the break to take 16 runs off Hardik Pandya's over and then piled on runs against Ashwin too to bring the required run rate down.

Markram completed a fine half-century, playing some exquisite shots along the way and helped by a dropped catch from Kohli and a missed run-out chance by Rohit. but he fell shortly afterwards, mistiming a pull off Pandya.

The equation had eased by this stage with the partnership putting South Africa on course for a win. But there was more drama in store with Ashwin sending back Tristan Stubbs in the 18th over after David Miller hit a couple of sixes off him.

With Shami delivering a terrific penultimate over, South Africa needed six runs off the last over and Miller, now past his fifty, off strike. However, with Miller back on strike, Bhuvneshwar got his bouncer off radar and conceded a four off Miller's gloves and South Africa completed a tense win to top the table in Group 2.

Indian bowling is significantly better than Pakistan's. If pakistan had only posted 133 they would have given up the game and sa would have finished it in 14 overs. Their bowlers only have pace- they lack heart.

Due to injuries they had to bring back Shami who was completely sidelined from T20s. Arshdeep is very new. BHuvi is just a new ball bowler. Promising IPL bowler like Moshin who is better than Arshdeep also had to undergo surgery. Siraj last minute inclusion. Umran was not tested enough. Same way Jadeja's absence ruined the balance in the batting.

Threatening pace attack at Perth. Not sure everywhere. Guys like KG, Ngidi have height. More than the pace their heigh makes the biggest difference. Even good length balls kick off. No wonder AMbrose was effortlessly taking wickets at perth

Miller knows Indian bowlers inside out. IPL, Several series have been played recently. When on song there is no finisher in the world can match Miller. Neither Maxwell nor Stoinis.

Agreed. This attack was getting smashed to pieces when they toured India. If they bowl first at SCG or Adelaide, we will see their true worth.

Miller was brilliant.

As long as he was there South Africa always looked calm and in control.

Superb innings.

And our overpaid and overrated IPL stars don't know him despite playing with and against him for so many IPL seasons?

Pandya is not fit to tie Miller's shoelaces when it comes to playing innings like these. :inti
Yeah.

Pandya is nothing in front of Miller, the batsman. He is so overrated that it isn't even funny anymore.

Less said about his bowling, better it is.

It's a miracle that we are even winning any matches with this ragtag combination. Most overrated team in this competition by far.

It's amazing how we select a specialist off spinner who is immensely experienced . The least you expect is control of length under a pressure situation.

And yet he delivered 2 full balls when the straight boundaries are shorter . As per Cricviz, the most negative impact player today.

But come next World T20, he will be selected again. It's like the Dhoni nightmare all over again.

Ngidi went for close to 60 runs in 4 overs. Nortje was brutally taken apart by Isan Kishan. They held all the cards on this super bouncy track. Not that India can't play them here. But i thought India was a bit reckless today trying to go after every ball like they were going to set a target of 200. All the top order had to do was giving company to SKY.

:facepalm to those who are undermining David Miller.

In T20Is, he is level superior to most batters in the world let alone Pandya. He is a superior T20 player than Babar, Rohit and Rizwan as well.

After Kohli, Buttler and Warner, David Miller is the 4th best batsman active in the world in T20s. The guy is the best finisher in the world and is a better six hitter than anyone. Look at his stats for reference and he has been playing clutch knocks too over last two years regularly.

Two T20I hundreds for a middle order batsman, average of 35 at strike rate of 145.

Even more amazing that we went into a game with two right handed off spinners.

Plays the toughest role in the easiest way possible. Not that he doesn't have weaknesses. He does. But bowler has to be spot on. He has to be aware what his areas are.

India's first problem was gifting wickets to Ngidi and waleed. I understand if you lose your wicket to Nortje or Rabada. This was shambolic. It was as if they wanted to target them.

Catches win matches, and India’s failure to take their chances in the field saw a win slip through their grasp against South Africa in Perth.

South Africa were hobbling along in their chase of just 134 to win against India, limping to just 40/3 at the midway point of the innings after wickets tumbled early.

So, breaking the partnership between Aiden Markram and David Miller was key to India’s chances, and eventually they did, with Suryakumar Yadav taking a catch in the deep to remove Markram for 52.

But by then much of the damage had been done, with the key partnership having added 60 runs in the previous 5.4 overs, putting South Africa in the driving seat in a game that still went down to the final over.

And things could have been so different.

Yadav missed a chance to run Markram out early in his innings, and Rohit Sharma failed to hit all three stumps with an even better run-out opportunity later in the partnership with Miller nowhere near making his ground.

But the most eye-catching and arguably most disappointing missed opportunity came when Markram, on 35 at the time, skied Ravi Ashwin to Virat Kohli.

No outfield catches at international level are easy. But this was a very presentable chance, one Kohli would expect to take. Yet out it popped, hitting the turf via a spot of juggling to give Markram a match-defining reprieve.

Ashwin’s expression said it all. And while it’s hard to put a match result down to just fielding slip-ups, it is undeniable that South Africa’s chase would have been far harder had they lost one of their two set batters during those crucial middle overs.

“If you take those catches, it's a different thing,” India’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar told reporters in his media conference after the match.

“The catches we dropped, or the misses, I think that's where, not the moment specifically, but we knew if we could have got those it changes things, things could have been different.

“But I don’t think there wasn't any particular moment where we can say that things shifted towards their side.”

For Markram, he was grateful for a slice of luck that helped his side move top of Group 2 and into pole position to qualify for the semi-finals.

“Sometimes you get the rub of the green, sometimes you don't,” the South African said. “At the end of the day you have to be grateful when you do get a bit of luck in the game.

“We’re certainly not thinking with a foot in the door at the moment, we've still got a massive game against Pakistan.

“And we've got Netherlands as well. We’ve seen the teams that have joined the Super 12 stage can beat any team on their day. So there's still a lot of cricket to be played for us. And it's pretty much about trying to get better game by game. We give ourselves the best chance to qualify if we do.”
