What's new

South Africa [335 & 343/9d] beat England [205 & 133] by 340 runs to level the series 1-1

This is pathetic by England. Mark Wood had a chance there to get some runs to make up for his bowling but he gets a golden duck. Surely will be dropped if Ball/Woakes is fit

Rabada back for next test, if they can sort out a decent opening partner for elgar then S.A will fancy chances in rest of series,

Wood was expected to be out for the next one due to injury anyway. Ball and Woakes probably aren't ready so it'll be Roland Jones chance.

Knew it was going to be bad, but that was much worse than expected. Embarrassing.

Faf has really turned things around for us in the field. The boys looked organised out there. Really loving his leadership. Bringing in Olivier at the end there was a good touch. Give the new kid some confidence.

South Africa's first innings lasted 96.2 overs. England have just been bowled out twice in 96.1 overs. Enough said.

England just about avoided an Inns defeat in reality when you look at the scores from the match! shocking stuff from england.

Embarrassing. Shot out for peanuts on a perfect batting wicket.

The batters of a generation ago would have at least taken this to the fifth day. Even seven or eight years back England were forcing draws with dramatic rearguard actions. Most if these guys only know how to attack.

England picked the wrong side. They were a batter light, a spinner heavy and Ballance is still in the wrong place.

True. Not sure what role Dawson performs in this test team- needs to be dropped in favour of a specialist batsmen.

I told you after 1st day that Poms lost the match before Tea when they allowed SAF to race to 180/2 at 3.5 on day 1 Trentbridge. And, once Phillander hit a 50 at Nottingham, he'll be among 2/3 contenders of MoM, because it's almost ideal bowling wicket for him.

Never expected this game to go to day 5, but I expected better show from Poms, at least till 12th session, but that's modern batting for you - a little bit of tricky wicket or a bit of desperate situation, where you need to bat for sessions, most times it ends in embarrassment for teams batting on 4th innings. 110 & 130 by two of the best modern sides on day 4, when the wicket is still good for batting - I wonder what these greats would have done facing Warne, Murali, Ambi, WW, Mushi or Mac on day 5 Oval or MCG or Bridgetown day 5 wicket.

Test cricket's bowling stats are distorted by modern batting greats - some kids in future will tell that Imran Khan had a poor 4th innings - but had he debuted 35 years later, you would have smelt bad in the box of many modern greats, facing his indeepers on 5th morning, in a hopeless chase.

Cricket is cheap now, so is stardom - hence Ben Stokes is new Botham.

Peace//

Ballance has been sent for an x-ray on his hand after the blow he took to it.

What else is required to keep him out of Yorkshire quota?

I can recall few months back you not agreeing with me that Bell is the best possible solution at 3 in an Ashes year & he should be given full summer (7 Test) before discarding one for the last time. He is not the best, he is actually the only solution to bat at 3, once KP is gone & Root has to bat at 4 - and I know Bell's County scores this summer - class is permanent, form is just what we see on scorecard.

Bell averages 28 in county cricket this year. He averaged 29.52 in his last 2 years of test cricket, he's done. He had his chances and that's a heck of a long time to simply be out of form. We need to be looking to the future rather than picking batsmen who are finished.

Sack Bayliss and give the coaching job back to Farbrace.

Seven test losses in twelve months, mostly by thumping margins? Not good enough.

Keep Cook, get Hameed back, put in another batter, move Bairstow to six and everyone else down one, get Woakes in for Wood.

Woakes is crocked and likely to miss entire series. I like Hameed but he is in woeful form. Maybe bring in Buttler with the gloves and move Johnny B up.

Eng were all over the place this Test. After the first Test great comeback from SA. Sets up the series nicely now.

England are a batter light. Wood and Dawson are not good enough. Root needs to bat at 3. There's no way ballance is good enough to face the new ball.
