What's new

South Africa [335 & 343/9d] beat England [205 & 133] by 340 runs to level the series 1-1

Root playing a glorious KPesque innings here as a counterattack. Cutting and driving everything to the boundary. Not sure how long it can last.

Olivier not as quick as I thought he'd be after reading some of the reports. He's getting the ball to swing but hasn't found the right line yet.

Not out given , Poms lucky.

Why lucky? It was an inside edge and almost missing the stumps. Would have been given not out, with a review or not. Delivery was not good enough to get a wicket. No luck.

Lucky not to lose wicket at this stage , very important session in the test match.

You could see it coming with the way Stokes sets himself up. Hardly any stride forward. Just dragged him out and beat him in line.

SA on top. England's best chance is to get on par and have a strong 2nd innings.

This quality spin bowling is just proving how utterly crap Liam Dawson is.

100 lead will be too good in this pitch, SA then just need to score 200 runs and give target of 300.

Needs another Moeen rescue job otherwise this match is looking like an SA win.

Rabada will be avenged Chief Destroyer :mv

Players these days mostly thrive when momentum is with them...

And generally they crumble when a couple of wickets falls which results in a collapse.

Woah SA ripping through Eng. Especially impressed by Maharaj. Have SA finally unearthed a quality spin bowler through their domestic set up? Looks really promising.

Root should bat at three and continue doing so. The rest bar Cook I don't think are good enough. Stick him at five and move Root and Bairstow up. SA done really well here, tbh i wasn't expecting it.

You want England to pick Matthew Carter who is now struggling to get in Notts (a division 2 county) 2nd xi...?

Yes, because he's only 21 and could do with spending some time with Saqlain. Him and Crane should be developed for the long term

Dawson, Wood and Ballance are awful.

SA should win from here.

England are declining since we won that Oval Test.

England collapsing in a heap. All well and good talking about "aggressive" and "positive" cricket but in Tests you need to be willing to graft and England have continually failed to do that in the longest format for a year now.

Take nothing away from SAF though. Philander, Morkel and Maharaj have bowled well.

I hope people now understand that it isnt necessary that your best player should be the captain..
A good player can give his best as a player too but a good captain can lift a team even they are not good while a poor captain no matter how good a player he is can bring downfall even of a good team.

136 lead with just 1 wicket left, Eng have to bat last... SA will have to play horrible cricket to loss now

Picking someone young from county cricket would be brave. Picking someone young who's been dropped from his county 2nd xi would be plain stupid.

While this England team is decent it seems a bit strange. Woakes will come in for Wood when he returns which will sort out the 3rd pacer problems. Dawson seems to be outbowled by Moeen despite Moeen not being a full time spinner, and providing little with the bat.

Starting to think England would be better off Moeen Ali at 7, Stokes at 8 and then with 9-11 bowlers. Would make their batting bat low down, and possibly allow Moeen and Stokes to focus more on their bowling (England especially reliant on Moeen for spin). Doesn't necessarily seem fair as both Moen and Stokes have potential to do well higher up the order. Moeen has definitely become the allrounder in tests England find more value in these days, but Stokes is too big a talent to simply pass up. You get increasingly the feeling that England carry around a bowler or two extra who don't really make their team stronger nor fit in the best possible combination.

140 lead with 10 wickets left.

Realistically we would need to bowl out SA for under 150 to have even a slither of a chance of winning.

Weather is set fair, so looks like a drubbing now. Great bowling and fielding from SA, dire batting from England.

Rubbish from England. A real chance to bury South Africa who were without Rabada. Too many weaknesses in the top order and then there is Dawson. If they fail to beat South Africa in this series I think ranking them about 5th in tests would be about right. I'd have Aussies, South Africa, Pakistan and India ahead of them.

Steady on, they're ahead in the series 1-0 and this is a 4-Test series.

I read lot on SAF's racial quota, but their white players are hardly justifying their spot either. This Test, so far only white contribution is Kok & may be Morris. This Khun guy is bang average, Morne doesn't deserve a spot over Phillandar & Rabada, Amla is still their top batsman while I hope none ever will come back with a comparison between Mahraj & Harmar. I am not sure if D'oliver is colored or not, but rest other non white players are justifying their spot.

It will be embarrassing for England to lose to SA at home without Steyn and ABD.

Lots of new SA players .

Bavuma and Duminy would have been gone without quota..

This could be quite an embarrassing loss. England looking like they picked the wrong team for these conditions and country miles behind in the match.

Poor batting performance from England. Credit to South Africa's bowlers , they have put them in a good position to win the game. Can't see Poms chasing 300 plus on this wicket.

ENG almost lost this Test, when they allowed SAF to race to 179/2 at tea on day 1, in only 52 overs at Trentbridge (means, before 2nd ball SAF was close to 300). May be there is a slight chance yet, if Poms can knock SAF by lunch tomorrow, but I actually expect SAF to set a target close to 450. This Test might not go to Day 5.

SA's test to lose from here on.
Nothing less than an extraordinary performance will do from England if they are looking to avoid 1-1.

I'd be worried if I were you James. South Africa are likely to win this game and they get Rabada next game which makes them stronger. Trent Bridge is an English strong hold so it will be a mental setback to lose there. England also don't have a recent great record at the Oval.

If South Africa can get a 350 lead, game won't reach day 5 I agree.

I wouldn't worry. Coming from experience collapses are not a misnomer (in fact frequent being a Pak fan :yk). It's true they'll replace a dire Oliver with a much better bowler in Rabada, but England won't let up either. Hopefully Dawson gets dropped and they'll strengthen either batting ir bowling as Dawson provides neither.

I think the series will finish 2-2, rain shouldn't be a problem.

Still think we rig pitches?

This one was ideal for Philander and England picked two spinners when they needed another batter.

The way the experts on this forum buried Keshav Maharaj, you would think he was bowling 5 pies every over. Great performance and fine way to answer your unjust critics.

De Kock gone too now.

Always a risk of an early exit when you bat higher up the order, bowlers are fresher and ball is newer.
