England's report card in their last eight ODIs reads: One win over eight matches. The latest of their losses came in an ODI against South Africa in Bloemfontein, where they slipped from 146 for no loss in 19.3 overs to 271 all out in pursuit of 299.

The worrying part for England is, since winning the 2019 World Cup, it has become a bit of a recurring theme to collapse from a position of strength. The crux of England's problem has been due to hectic schedules, they aren't able to play their best XI over a period of time. To encapsulate the point, for the ongoing ODI series against South Africa, the mainstay of the batting order, Joe Root, was rested. And his presence was sorely missed as England lost wickets at regular intervals after Jason Roy and Dawid Malan had given a rousing start.

In Root's absence, the onus was on Ben Duckett and Harry Brook to shoulder the responsibility, but both of them contributed just three runs in total. The duo would be looking to put on a better show in the second game at the same ground. The think tank also have to keep an eye on Moeen Ali's barren run in the 50-over format. The all-rounder has compiled just 718 runs in 61 ODIs and at an average of 18.89 since the start of 2018. To make matters worse, he doesn't have a single fifty to his name in that period in ODIs and averages almost 50 with the ball.

Will Jacks, who is a part of England's Test squad for the New Zealand series, and Liam Livingstone (currently injured) could come into the equation to replace Moeen in the near-future. But for now, England look set to continue with Moeen, with the all-rounder providing an extra bowling option. Amidst a few worry lines, the one silver lining for England was Roy finding some of his mojo back with a superlative hundred. On the bowling side of things, Jofra Archer went for 81 runs on his return to England side. With Mark Wood rested for the series, England need Archer to step up and spearhead the attack.

Meanwhile, the home side have enough positives to take from the opening game. Rassie van der Dussen continued to shine brightly in the 50-over arena and composed his fourth ODI ton. The experienced middle order bat, David Miller, also was among the runs, cracking a fifty. Anrich Nortje, the side's fastest bowler, was expensive in his first spell but turned out to be the ebullient energizer with the old ball and finished with a four-for. Sisanda Magala also was among the wickets, taking a three-for.

South African skipper Temba Bavuma would hope for more of the same from his players in the second match as they eye a series win. South Africa are also on flimsy footing in the World Cup Super League, and they have to win all their remaining four ODIs (two against England and two against the Netherlands) to ensure direct qualification to the World Cup. Otherwise, they have to depend on other results.

When: January 29, 2023; 10.00 AM local

Where: Mangaung Oval, Bloemfontein

What to expect: The track for the first game was flat and good for batting. Although, there was a bit of spongy bounce. If the same track is used for the second match, we could see a little more of that spongy bounce. It is also a day game and that could mean a touch more seam movement for the bowlers upfront.

Team news:

South Africa:

The hosts look set to play the same XI that posted a come-from-behind win in the opening game.

Possible XI: Quinton de Kock (wk), Temba Bavuma (c), Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Wayne Parnell, Sisanda Magala, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Tabraiz Shamsi

England:

Ben Duckett and Harry Brook could get another game, especially with Phil Salt suffering from an illness. The veteran pace bowler Chris Woakes or Reece Topley could make it to the XI.

Possible XI: Jason Roy, Dawid Malan, Ben Duckett, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler (c & wk), Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, David Willey, Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer, Olly Stone/Reece Topley/Chris Woakes

What they said:

"Disappointing, we played excellent cricket for a majority of that game. To be in a position like we were after that opening stand, it's disappointing not to finish it off," Jos Buttler said after the opening ODI.

Squads:

England Squad: Jason Roy, Dawid Malan, Ben Duckett, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler(w/c), Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, David Willey, Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer, Olly Stone, Reece Topley, Philip Salt, Chris Woakes

South Africa Squad: Quinton de Kock(w), Temba Bavuma(c), Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Wayne Parnell, Sisanda Magala, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Tabraiz Shamsi, Lungi Ngidi, Janneman Malan, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Reeza Hendricks

Proteas seamer Sisanda Magala opted to praise the performance of the team rather than taking in too much of individual acclaim following the impressive 27-run win over England in game one of their three-match Betway One-Day International (ODI) series in Bloemfontein on Friday.

The 32-year-old, representing South Africa for the fourth time, claimed a notable three for 46 that helped him claim the Player of the Match prize at the Mangaung Oval.

Magala’s performance came after the tourists had raced to 146 for none inside 20 overs as they hunted down 299 set by the hosts. It inspired a memorable Proteas fightback and, aided by four wickets from Anrich Nortje, the English were eventually restricted to 271 all out in 44.2 overs.

“I was a little bit nervous to be honest considering how England play, their style and their brand,” Magala said afterwards. “So I was a little bit nervous but I was also excited to let that first ball go.

“I think we did well overall not to allow them to get too many big partnerships other than that first one. I think continuously getting wickets at important times really helped us and gave us the belief that we could defend that score. The currency was wickets and we kept getting a lot of them.”

The match was the first for South Africa’s new Proteas coaching regime of Rob Walter, the new white-ball head, and Shukri Conrad, the new Test coach who is taking charge of the series as the former wraps up his commitments in New Zealand.

Magala said that victory was all that counted for the team as they look to make a positive start in what is a new era for South Africa.

He said: “The most important thing is winning and that's what we managed to do. It's a bit pointless if the team is losing. We have to try and get the team over the line as often as possible. As Rob said in our meeting, it's important for us to win those key moments and I think we did that tonight, which is really good.”

Rassie van der Dussen, the hero with the bat for the Proteas after his fourth career century (111 off 117 balls, 6 fours, 1 six), felt the result was huge injection of confidence for their dressing room ahead of match two on Sunday.

“Whenever you beat England it gives you great confidence, they obviously are the world champions, and considering the way they have been playing in the last few years,” Van der Dussen said. “To beat them is always a feather in the cap for our team.”

The result was also priceless for the home side in the broader context of World Cup qualification. They entered the series precariously placed in 11th spot on the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League table with only five games remaining. And now with four to play, victory lifted them up to 10th, although they still have plenty to do to give themselves the best possible chance of avoiding a qualification tournament in their quest to play in India later this year.

“We're not really thinking about that qualification,” Van der Dussen added. “Whatever happens, so if we need to go to qualify then we'll do that if not and we end up winning two or three more games from the remaining four or five then that will be okay.”

South Africa have won the toss and have opted to field

Shamsi and Rabada miss out - Maharaj and Ngidi come in.

England confirm their two changes, Archer and Willey miss out - Woakes and Topley come in.

==

Temba Bavuma - We'll bowl first, the pitch looks to be on the sticky side and we; ll look to exploit that. It's good for confidence to win at home, we have had a good chat and we want to keep challenging ourselves. The pressure is always there, the guys are fully aware of that, but we don't want to think too much about that. Couple of changes - Shamsi and KG miss out (also Marco Jansen replaces Sisanda Magala)

Jos Buttler - Looks like a good surface, so happy to make the first use of that. We would like to play in a certain way, we're committed to that, looking forward to the game against a tough opposition. We have two changes - Jofra Archer and David Willey miss out, Chris Woakes and Reece Topley are back.

South Africa (Playing XI): Quinton de Kock(w), Temba Bavuma(c), Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Wayne Parnell, Keshav Maharaj, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi

England (Playing XI): Jason Roy, Dawid Malan, Ben Duckett, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler(w/c), Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Sam Curran, Adil Rashid, Olly Stone, Reece Topley

Good recovery but Duckett out now -

Over 17 - England 83-3 (Buttler 1, Brook 35)

Big partnership this - if England want to get somewhere.

Superb from England.

Put pressure on South Africa throughout the innings.

Good battle this, no anchorage from either side it seems. Full bloodied and brutal.

South Africa are now possibly one win away from sealing direct entry to World Cup. They have 79 points and West Indies have 88 points.

South Africa are scheduled to play Netherlands in March (part of Super League). So, they should make it.

England losing all these bilaterals only to turn it on in world cup and win it like a baazigar style.

Athers: South Africa have lots of ability
Sky Sports Cricket's Michael Atherton...

"It shows you how ridiculous a situation it is that South Africa are scrambling to qualify for the World Cup. A side of that ability should be qualifying in the top eight.

"It is a measure of how poorly they have played in the last few years and you felt Bavuma had a point to prove. He picked Rashid and it was a good series win for him as captain against a good England team."

Buttler: Great chase from South Africa
England captain Jos Buttler...

"South Africa bowled really well. To come back from early wickets and post the score we did was pleasing but it was a great chase. Bavuma led from the front and the middle order had great momentum. We couldn't pick up wickets early enough."

Bavuma: Series win is special
South Africa captain and Player of the Match, Temba Bavuma (109 off 102 balls)...

"A series win is very special. Your disciplines are always tested against England and chasing 340-odd gives us a lot of confidence. It was good I reminded myself how to count to a hundred!

"It could have taken something miraculous for us to lose that game but I think the guys were fairly calm."

England cannot defend 340+

Remember, England didn't beat NZ in the WC 2019 final, couldn't beat NZ's score, but won on a technicality - pure fluke.

It shows.

South Africa sealed a one-day international series victory over England as captain Temba Bavuma's century led a brilliant run chase in his side's five-wicket win.

England looked to have set a strong total as captain Jos Buttler (94 not out) and Harry Brook (80) led the tourists to 342-7 after Bavuma had put them in to bat in Bloemfontein.

However, the Proteas skipper led from the front with 109 from 102 balls, as South Africa kept up with the required rate throughout, before David Miller (58 not out) and Marco Jansen (32 not out) saw them home with five balls to spare after an unbroken stand of 65.

The victory gives South Africa an unassailable 2-0 lead ahead of Wednesday's series finale, and provides a further boost to their hopes of securing automatic qualification for the World Cup later this year in India.

While there were positives to take from England's batting performance in particular, Buttler's side have now lost five straight ODIs and will be seeking an upturn in form as they prepare to defend their 2019 title.

This was an enjoyable game of cricket. The crowd seemed pumped up too.

A great century by Bavuma and then good support from the rest of the team before Killer Miller did what he does best.

Except that has never happened. Last time, they won the World Cup on the back of a stellar bilateral record and even then just scraped to a win despite playing at home.

This England side can be beaten and has been continously beaten in this World Cup cycle.

I think Stokes will take back his retirement and Root will slot back in too at some point. Bairstow will come back in too I suppose.

Some small tweaks and they can be a stronger batting side.

The bowling is quite weak - Woakes, Moeen Ali and Olly Stone are weak links in the current playing XI but a fit Jofra (potentially) will strengthen things here too.

I'm not sure Jofra will improve the bowling too much. I think they need Wood's pace more. Stone is a decent bowler and was actually the best bowler today and Toppley had an off day today. But yeah Woakes is done I think. They need another quick. But Jofra may not be the answer.

How will they integrate Root, Bairstow and Stokes in the lineup . Stokes , for all the talk, needs to manage his workload and I'm not sure he can play the World Cup before playing a few games in this format .
I can see Root replacing Duckett and Bairstow replacing Roy maybe. But this English side looks very unsettled and it's hard to call them favourires this time.

Temba Bavuma’s magnificent third career century inspired the Proteas to an incredible 343-run chase that lifted them to a series-winning victory over England in the second Betway One-Day International (ODI) played at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein on Sunday.

The South Africa captain struck an attacking, yet composed, 109 off 102 ball (14 fours, 1 six), battling cramp towards the end to set up his team up for what was a marathon chase – their third highest in their history.

There were contributions from everyone else in the line-up, including a pivotal unbeaten 58 off 37 balls (2 fours, 3 sixes) by David Miller, who came in an finished the job with five deliveries to spare.

Apart from taking an unassailable lead in the series, the result was more important in the broader context of World Cup qualification as it allowed the hosts to edge a step closer to automatically booking their ticket to the finals in India later this year. The 10 points gained for the win lifted them above Sri Lanka into ninth on the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League table with three matches to play.

However, they will likely see that as an added bonus and for the next 24 hours at least, savour what was a famous outing in the Free State.

South Africa are entering a new era after the appointment of separate format coaches in the form of Rob Walter and Shukri Conrad in the white and red ball arenas respectively. With the former still in New Zealand completing commitments in his previous job, the latter is taking charge for this series and he would have been highly impressed by what he witnessed on a blistering hot day in Bloemfontein, which two days earlier saw the home side win the first game by 27 runs.

Bavuma won the toss and opted to bowl first with the tourists piling on what appeared to be a match-winning 342 for seven. Their skipper Jos Buttler top scored with 94 not out from only 82 balls (8 fours, 3 sixes), while Harry Brook appeared nailed on for a century before falling to a loose stroke to Aiden Markram (1/26) for 80 (75 balls, 7 fours, 4 sixes)

Moeen Ali was also amongst the runs with 51 off 45 balls (6 fours, 1 six) as the Proteas conceded 34 extras. Anrich Nortje was the pick of the bowlers with two for 64.

South Africa needed something special from the outset and Bavuma answered the call with his clean hitting and impressive timing. He put on 77 for the first wicket alongside Quinton de Kock, who missed most of the day before that after he was struck on the finger whilst keeping wicket and was forced to leave the field.

The opener nonetheless returned to hit 31, before he was first to fall to Ollie Stone (2/48). Bavuma then added 97 with Rassie van der Dussen, before the captain slowed down towards the end when cramp set in. He was bowled by Sam Curran and his second wicket partner succumbed four runs later for 38 leaving the home side on 178 for three in the 29th over.

Aiden Markram (49) and Heinrich Klaasen (27) aided in the chase with a 55-run fourth wicket stand, and although both were dismissed, Miller and Marco Jansen (32 not out) held their nerve to complete a superb win.

The third and final match of the series is scheduled to take place in Kimberley on Wednesday.

That was some performance by South Africa.

I was unsure about Bavuma, but he's shown that he can cut it at this level as a player and as skipper.

I wonder. While at least four players (Bairstow, Root, Stokes, Wood) are better than the ones in this XI, Buttler isn’t a good skipper IMO.

Yes I think Stokes should come out of retirement. Even if he isn't captaining his aura lifts the team in big games and he can assist Buttler in captaincy.

When i watch T20's and then an ODI series, the format feels redundant, if it is the other way around, i am unable to appreciate T20's

This has been a great ODI series so far.

Why Root not playing ODI's recently

Anway he is not a part of T20's right then why too much rest for him considering this a world cup year

Even After this 100 I'm not convinced of him as a LOI player. But they have quotas they need to fill in side.
