South Africa [496/3d & 247/6d] beat Bangladesh [320 & 90] by 333 runs in the first Test

Too much time waste on DRS - 3rd umpire goes for the standard routine. Instead, they could have easily checked the ball tracking first & it could have saved 3 minutes!!!!
 
[MENTION=79064]MMHS[/MENTION] true but i think it takes time until ball tracking is ready.
 
I scoring shot in 35 minutes - they are balancing yesterday's display.
 
What a shot!!! Bent knee drives are rare these days for the size of mallet they use.
 
50 for Mominul and Hathurusinghe dropped him from the team in favour of Soumya and Shabbir. He only got back in due to injury to Mosaddek.
 
Rabada getting chatty with the Bangladeshi batsmen. Frustration beginning to show.
 
Why is Tamim batting at no.5.

Anyway, this is a good outing for the BD youngsters to get some experience in these conditions if nothing else

I was away in the last 2 days. Could not watch the match. Only watched the first session this morning.

Wicket looks placid. Very placid. Although rabada was getting it to reverse. Bangladesh pace bowlers as always useless on flat tracks.

I'm a bit surprised SA didn't prepare a green heaven to get us all out for under 180 and then win by an innings.
 
Imrul scored 7 runs on a flat track despite being a specialist batsman.

It doesn't bode well for a side if Imrul Kayes is an opener.

Hello, I was wondering why you had run away thought it might have been because of SA's dominance :yk The first 2 days would have frightened you more then the IT movie good job you were away :))

Another one bites the dust, he really needed to stay at the wicket. Will be tough for BD from here, but I have faith that Shakib will bat really well with the lower order to get your team out of this hole
 
Great comeback from Mahmudullah. Another 100 runs would be brilliant for Bangladesh.

Because of ignorance - not knowing cricket rules. When SAF was 480 or so he went for a bit of nap in dressing room - FaF declared at 496, which means he could bat only after the amount of time he was out. It happens to be 3 down by then.

292/5 was pretty good, but 320 all out from that position was a poor effort.
 
Bangladesh batters played well. They didn't surrender meekly and scored briskly also.

Nothing to be ashamed of their efforts
 
I believe Grineedge had a debut at Bangalore of 94 & 104. Markram probably has just enough time ....

6 batsmen got a start , became well set but couldn't play a long innings.The last 4 wickets always meekly surrender for 10 to 15 runs.That has been the scenario for the last few years for Bangladesh.
 
Man, Maharaj is a classy bowler. I think he will end up with at least 200 wickets, sad he started so late,
 
BANGLADESH put up a defiant performance on day three of the first Sunfoil Test match at Senwes Park on Saturday to keep the Standard Bank Proteas first innings lead in check and then prevent them from increasing it too rapidly.

When bad light brought play to a slightly early finish the Proteas still held a strong position, having turned their first innings lead of 176 into an overall advantage of 230 runs with 8 wickets still in hand.

But Bangladesh nevertheless deserved full credit for a gutsy performance which saw them win their first session of the game in the morning when they scored 91 runs for the loss of just Tamim Iqbal’s wicket – a first for debutant Andile Phehlukwayo in the five-day format.

Their spirited showing was built around the batting of Mominul Haque (77 off 150 balls, 12 fours) and Mahmudullah (66 off 124 balls, 11 fours and a six) who were largely responsible for the four successive half-century partnerships the visitors put together. Sadly neither batsman was able to go on to the century that Bangladesh needed.

It looked for a long time as though the Proteas might have a small first innings lead until they struck with the second new ball as the last five wickets fell for just 28 runs.

On a playing surface that demanded a lot of patience from the Proteas attack it was Keshav Maharaj who led the wicket-takers (3/92 in 27.1 overs) and there were two wickets each for the new ball spearhead of Morne Morkel and Kagiso Rabada.

There is still more than enough time left in the match for the Proteas to set Bangladesh a target somewhere in the region of 400 and Faf du Plessis’ main concern will be to give his bowlers enough overs to finish the job. He will want them to have substantial use of a second new ball which suggests he will want at least four sessions of play.
 
The Standard Bank Proteas will ‘assess’ the state of the conditions before making a call on a possible target to set Bangladesh in the first Sunfoil Test match at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom. Bad light brought an early end to the third day, with the Proteas holding a 230-run lead with eight second innings wickets in hand.

The loss of time, the uncertainty around the conditions and Bangladesh’s fighting first innings score of 320 – which is their highest score in South Africa – are all factors Faf du Plessis and the management will be considering as they plot the way to victory.

“It (pitch) hasn’t deteriorated as much as most people expected it to,” left-arm spinner, Keshav Maharaj said at stumps on Saturday. “ We will have to see how things pan out tomorrow, see if there is overnight rain and how it will affect the pitch tomorrow.

“The bad light interfering and taking out an hour from the day’s play has taken some time out of the game,” he said. “ We will have to assess tomorrow morning and take it from there. The batsmen give us the best feedback on the conditions, if it is getting worse or getting better to bat on.”

Maharaj once again showed impressive control and tact against an aggressive approach from Bangladesh’s batsmen, finishing with 3/92 in friendly batting conditions. He will hope for more of the same in their second innings, which promises to be a good contest as both teams eye victory.

“ We know that the Bangladesh side is quite an attacking side,” Maharaj said. “ At times, yes we were surprised by some of the shots they played but we do know that they like to take the game away from the opposition.

“Although they had a high run-rate at the time we did feel there were opportunities that came up,” he said. “We had structured conversations in terms of bringing the run-rate down which would then hopefully bring some wickets here and there.”

Play will start at 10h00 on Sunday with Hashim Amla (17) and Temba Bavuma (3) resuming the innings on 54/2. The lost time will be made up during the sessions throughout the day.

According to Imrul, coach already told him he doesnt have to score runs. If anyone will get dropped it will be Mominul.
 
The last 5 wickets fell for 30 runs

We were in with a chance to score 420 ish and ensure a draw
 
Just reading commentary, they are being really critical of Mushfiqars captaincy. Can remember [MENTION=79064]MMHS[/MENTION] criticising Azhars captaincy consistently but haven't seen him say anything bad about Mushfiqars captaincy.

If Bangladesh's tail didn't collapse towards the end yesterday, a draw would have been the most likely result. SA will win this game now as still best part of 2 days left so more than enough time to bowl Bangladesh out when they eventually do declare.

Mushfiqur's captaincy always annoyed me and I always criticized his captaincy even when he was captaining the ODI side. Bangladesh began to do well in LOI consistently only when Masrafee replaced him as captain.I am sure that Bangladesh will do even better in tests if Tamim or Shakib or Mahmudullah is made test captain.
 
I don't think highly of myself but i can boast that I am a better captain than Mushfiqur Rahim.

And I never played a game of professional cricket.
 
THE Standard Bank Proteas overcame the duel handicaps of losing their bowling spearhead, Morne Morkel, with a side strain and a substantial amount of time to bad weather to push strongly for victory over Bangladesh on the fourth day of the first Sunfoil Test match at Senwes Park on Sunday.

Being well aware of the inclement weather in the vicinity Faf du Plessis and Temba Bavuma led a determined to drive to lift the scoring rate in the South African second innings after the early loss of Hashim Amla’s wicket.

The pair were largely responsible for an impressive 149 runs being scored in the morning session without further loss at a rate of more than 5 to the over. Their final stand was worth 142 runs in just 29 overs with Du Plessis making 81 (101 balls, 6 fours and a six) and Bavuma 71 (107 balls, 7 fours).

There were a few lusty blows from Keshav Maharaj before Du Plessis applied the declaration, setting Bangladesh a target of 424 runs.

Morkel then gave the Proteas an irresistible surge towards victory as he took two wickets in his opening over and would have had a third had he not overstepped the crease when he castled the visiting captain, Mushfiqur Raheem. The latter went on to survive until the tea break which turned out to be the end of the day’s play as well but he lost a key partner in the final over when Maharaj had Imrul Kayes caught by Quinton de Kock behind the stumps.

It left Bangladesh with more than a mountain to climb at 49/3 and, even allowing for the probable loss of Morkel for the rest of the game, they still have enough other trump cards to play. This applies particularly to Maharaj who has posed enormous problems now that the pitch is finally starting to display some wear and tear.
 
Steyn, Philander, Morris and now Morkel. Our most experienced pacer in the next game will be Rabada. We're in trouble.

I think, I had said every thing on Mushi's Captaincy - you have to find that thread where he was placed below Azhar :(

Here, I actually don't blame him much for the decision at toss or 2nd innings bowling strategy. It might end as a master stroke ............. if there is couple of sessions' rain tmro. :)

Political choice - also, it keeps things in balance between Tamim & Shakib. As a player, he makes the team on merit, which is one major reason at first.

Sakhib and Tahim make the team on merit as well.
 
BD have done well by scoring 300+ thereby avoiding follow on and scoring psychological points.

The Standard Bank Proteas bowlers are geared up to put in a collective effort to claim seven wickets for victory on the final day of the first Sunfoil Test match against Bangladesh at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom. The injury blow to pace spearhead, Morne Morkel, has been an unfortunate setback, along with the inclement weather which has been forecast to affect the fifth day’s proceedings.

Debutant, Andile Phehlukwayo, will have an important role to play in the second innings, after a partial contribution of six overs with a maiden Test wicket of dangerman, Tamim Iqbal, in the first innings. Proteas batsman, Temba Bavuma, is confident Phehlukwayo and the rest of the attack will have enough fire-power and mettle to push on for a series-leading performance.

“ Andile has fitted in well in the team, he doesn’t feel like it’s his debut,” Bavuma said after the day’s play on Sunday. “ Looking at the wicket and the way it has played he will definitely play a big role in the second innings. We saw what he could do in the first innings, he kept the batters quiet. Here with the variable bounce and the straighter lines that he bowls he will come to the party.

“It is a massive blow,” he said of Morkel’s injury. “ Morne is the leader of the attack and he was hot at that point in time. Luckily we have got guys in the reserve tank, I will be bringing my bowling spikes tomorrow as well. Andile, Keshav, KG and Duanne are all capable of putting up their hands and doing good for the team.”

Earlier, Faf du Plessis (81) and Bavuma’s (62) 142-run fourth-wicket partnership set the tone and intent of a push towards victory, but also highlighted the latter’s ability to adapt his style of play.

Bavuma was promoted to the number four position in the last Test match against England in Manchester, and seems to have comfortably settled into the position, where he currently averages 53.33. He attributes his innings tempo to the situation of the match, and has fitted in to accommodate the varying styles of his regular batting partners, Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis.

“ I try to play the situation of the game as well as I can,” he said of his batting. “ When I came in yesterday, we had lost two quick wickets, I felt my job was to try and get the team to the end of the day. I tried to almost compromise the runs and to try and get us into a strong position. Today, the team tactic was to get to lunch, my thinking was to get to lunch, I knew that at some point the runs would come.

“ Batting with Faf and Amla, I think I enjoy the tempos they bat with,” he explained. “ Amla at the top of the order and because of the situation of the game tried to anchor the innings to get us to a good position. When Faf came in he brought a lot of intensity and energy, and I tried to feed off that. I have enjoyed batting with Hash and Faf quite a bit.”

Morkel sustained a left side strain while bowling in the sixth over of his spell and was unable to continue bowling following treatment and assessment. He will be taken for scans on Monday morning to determine the full extent of the injury.

One step at a time buddy one step at a time, it's a big morale victory in itself that BD made it to day 5 and that too without Shakib. Maybe with him there'd have had more of a chance to save this game, but the positive is you have on less quitter in the team; I rather have a hack in the team with a heart then a player who takes his ball home to be honest with you

Did you expect anything better, honestly look at the response of Bangla fans or their star player? They just want tests at home to register wins against teams not that good against spin, when it comes to tough tours outside they have this lax attitude as if they deserve more!

Didn't even seem like they were trying. The shots played were appalling. Especially after they showed some grit in the first innings.
 
Even miraz would be better captain than this world class worst captain Mushfiq stupid.

Sack this worthless captain in the next match. And also sack bowling coach.
 
KAGISO RABADA took on the responsibility of leading the attack in the absence of Morne Morkel in spectacular style as the Standard Bank Proteas thrashed Bangladesh by 333 runs with time and overs to spare on the final day of the first Sunfoil Test match at Senwes Park on Monday.

Rabada needed just 19 balls to blow away what was left of the Bangladesh top order with three wickets, including that of captain Mushfiqur Rahim to the third ball he send down.

For good measure Rabada also produced a bullet throw from the deep for a run out before Keshav Maharaj wrapped up what was left of the innings to finish with 7 wickets in the match. This gave him 50 wickets in only 12 Test matches to put him on the list of South Africa’s top performers to this landmark.

The Bangladesh innings lasted only 83 minutes as 7 wickets fell for 41 runs.

Only three of their batsmen reached double figures in this innings in a total of 90 all out. Maharaj finished with 4/25 and Rabada with 3/33.

Dean Elgar was named Sunfoil Man of the Match.

True, I found it shocking how they were defending Shakib taking a holiday. There were many sessions in this Test where he could have made a difference in my opinion, alright am not going to say he's going to win a Test on his own because it's tough in SA for asian teams but a guy who has been so influential when it comes to their results I'd certainly want him in the side. Plus this wicket was actually not too bad, big missed opportunity. They've surrendered on a day 5 wicket to a spinner in SA ! let that sink in, it's almost as if they entered this series expecting defeat. And as you say with that lax attitude we can't really be too surprised by this.

I think, one player won't have made any difference when you lose 15/115 on a good wicket. There should have been better effort to pass time, considering the weather forecast.

A draw was possible, would you say the same wrt toss, playing in better batting conditions with no scoreboard pressure? If a major player missing such a big series is fine for you & sakib, then why do some of you pretend that you care about tests & are an ever improving side?

No one said it's fine for him to skip a Test series, but he might have a genuine cause. And, hardly anyone cares about Test cricket, those who does, don't need to pretend. We are indeed an improving side - you can compare other Asian team's first Test in SAF tours, particularly playing it after one practice match. Only foolish decision was to fi ld first on a belter & try to get a draw from back door.
